TOMOKA HEIGHTS
Activities Organization Newsletter
MAY 2011
(CONTINUED)
Then, there was Paul & Ana Marie Quinn attempting,
with great success, our first Carnivore’s Delite. The
Luau followed the next week and provided us with some
great laughs and showed the versatility of some of our
dancing ladies and men. As I write this article, we have
not had our Easter Dinner, which I’m sure will be a success. I have already been offered help with this upcoming event. Volunteers! I love them!
The month of May will be another active month with a
Family Day dinner on Mother’ s Day, a Bus Trip to Winter
Park, Florida, two Afternoon Delites (one will be a Pizza
Party with Frank E and the other will be a “bring an Hors
d’ oeuvres social”). There will be a Memorial Day Dinner
Dance with Gary & Shirley Daniels providing the music.
A speaker has been arranged for Monday, May 9th, that
will deal with information concerning Reverse Mortgages. The Bunco, Bingo and Pot Luck events will continue throughout the summer.
Gerry Irvine, Fashion Show Welcome
CHAIRLADY’S REPORT
As this will be the last newsletter until September,
please note that we have many activities planned for
the summer months. A schedule for these will be
forthcoming. Please keep it handy for easy reference
throughout the summer. Reminder flyers will be delivered for some of the events. Also, check the Bulletin
Board in the Reading Room and the Activities Board in
the Clubhouse hall for any changes or additions.
We will not be holding our regular meetings in June,
July or August. However, your Board will still be at
work to keep you informed, via the “tube”, mail or
web -site, of any important issues that arise. If it is
deemed necessary, we will call a special meeting.
I want to thank all of you who will continue to make
Tomoka an enjoyable community in which to live during the summer months, by volunteering to provide us
with a variety of activities and contributing your time
and efforts to the upkeep and betterment of our community. It is wonderful that so many of our residents
work so hard and unselfishly to make Tomoka such a
lovely and active place to reside.
On that note, April has been a very busy month. It
began with the Picnic in the Park, followed the next
day with Breakfast at the Clubhouse. We have had
three Continuing Education Sessions dealing with
Health Care, Electrical Options, and Emergency &
Hurricane disasters. Colleen Kesting and her Relay
for Life Team did an excellent job for Cancer Awareness.
There is now $5,500 in the Scholarship Fund. We will be
awarding two $2,000 scholarships and one $1,000 scholarship to deserving Lake Placid High School students at
their Awards Ceremony to be held in May. We are also
sponsoring four young children to attend the Archbold
Summer Camp. The money for these awards comes
from the recent money raising events we had here in
Tomoka. It is reassuring to know that we, in our little
way, are giving our young people a chance for a better
life.
The Fashion Show is one of the money raising events for
scholarships. Sandy Mathews, the coordinator for this
event, spends many hours organizing, selecting and
choosing just the right outfits for the models in the
show. She takes great care to make the whole event a
beautiful day and has succeeded each year. Thank you
Sandy for a job well done.
You know, there is one lady in Tomoka who goes about
her job quietly and very efficiently. She makes sure we
get our monthly newsletter and calendar printed on time,
even though she may have to go out of her way to get
some of the information. She spends a lot of time arranging the articles, scores and miscellaneous information to find a place for it all. We are very fortunate to
have her here. The lady I am referring to is Patty
Mancuso, a lovely, talented lady. Thank you, Patty, for
keeping us informed of the “goings on” in our community.
In closing, for those of you who will be leaving us for the
summer months, please drive safely and have a good
safe summer. We will be looking forward to seeing you
when you return in the Fall.

This year’s Fashion Show and Luncheon was held at the clubhouse on
March 25th. The theme was Style—It’s all “Relative” and featured some
of our residents and their family members as the models. Once again, this
year’s event was chaired by Sandy Mathews.
Leola Robillard also did an outstanding job of soliciting local merchants for
door prizes for the event. She and other volunteers also helped to secure
many lovely prizes for the “Opportunity Table” which was very successful in
raising money for the Scholarship Fund.

Kathleen Beavers
Heading
Over the years, the clubhouse has been beautifully decorated on numerous occasions for events being
held there. The lady who has made this happen is Kathleen Beavers. She is one of those “behind the
scenes” volunteers who works hard to make sure our Activities’ events have specific decorations in
place for the social being presented. At this year’s Fashion Show, held on March 25th, Kathleen once
again worked her magic. The dining room tables were each decorated with a different theme, such as
Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, Fall, Thanksgiving, Spring, Easter, 4th of July, Casino, etc. There were
three tables that were especially noteworthy: the Golf Theme, a Safari Decor and the “main event”
of the decorating project was “A Wedding Table”. This table included a beautiful wedding cake and
floral arrangements, all of which were in place for a special occasion that was to be celebrated the following day...Doug & Kathleen’s 66th Wedding Anniversary (3/31/11) . Their family was here with them
to attend the anniversary party. Plus, daughters Janet, Barbara & Becky, along with granddaughter
Madison, accompanied Kathleen to the Fashion Show. Kathleen and daughter Janet were models in
the show.
So, we wanted to make sure that Kathleen knows how much we appreciate her efforts over the years.
She has provided many pleasurable visual experiences for us when we attend functions at the clubhouse.
Pictured at the left is one of the “Opportunity Tables” featured
at this year’s fashion show.
The Opportunity Tables are great instruments used to raise money
that goes directly to the Tomoka Scholarship Fund. We appreciate
the hard work of our volunteers who are involved in acquiring the
items for the tables. We also appreciate the attendees at the
Fashion Show who so generously participate in the event.
