Hopes, dreams, and pressures are plentiful in the barrio. Usnavi, a young storeowner, dreams of traveling back to the Dominican Republic, the place of his birth. Nina has dropped out of Stanford and dreads disappointing her parents who can barely keep their cab company afloat. Benny, who is employed by Nina’s parents, wants to start his own cab company someday and maybe win the girl of his dreams. Vanessa wishes she could escape the neighborhood’s stifling tedium and the catcalls from the barrio boys. When Usnavi discovers that one of his customers has won the lottery for $96,000 and the summer heat triggers a blackout, the barrio is thrown into chaos as tradition and family loyalty come into conflict with desires for escape and self-betterment. This whirlwind story is full of passion, joy, heartbreak, life, and driving Latin beats during a sizzling summer of possibilities. The word ‘home’ has many different meanings: your current address, where you were born, where you grew up, the nation you’re fighting for overseas, where your parents live, etc... RIANNA HIDALGO (Ensemble, Carla u/s) is grateful to be back at Village Theatre after studying journalism and theatre at the University of Miami. Village credits: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast; Festival of New Musicals reading of Hello! My Baby (Nelly); KIDSTAGE productions of West Side Story (Anita) and Chicago (Roxie). Mucho amor to those who support me no matter what shenanigans I am up to! In The Heights is filled with characters who, at the top of the show, believe that their ‘real’ home is somewhere other than Washington Heights in Manhattan. They go about their day, grinding, struggling, working incessantly just to pay their bills and keep food on the table. It’s the hottest day of the entire summer in New York City, and life isn’t easy. Each of these characters is convinced that their final destination and lifestyle will be drastically different than the daily battles that happen In The Heights. However, as the story unfolds and new relationships and discoveries are made, this concept of ‘home’ takes on a new meaning. People learn to cherish what’s in front of them, rather than seeing today as simply a struggle to get to a fantasy ‘tomorrow’ that may or may not come. Usnavi, our central character and narrator, spends the entire show dreaming of one day escaping the Heights to get back to the Dominican Republic. But by the end of the show, he realizes ‘home’ might not be a place at all, but rather a mindset. It’s cheesy, but home is where the heart is. These characters learn that. And we need to learn/know that as well. I consider Village Theatre an artistic home of mine. To be able to direct this show, at this theatre, so quickly after returning home to the Northwest after a brief time in New York... it’s more than a blessing. I feel it’s meant to be. I also believe that the musical you are about to watch is one of the best musicals that has ever been written. So turn on your ears and try to keep up with these lyrics... they’re gonna come FAST! But if you can keep up, I promise you this story will stay with you. It has stayed with me, and I’m better for it. I’m honored. I’m thankful. I’m home. Eric Ankrim, Director 8 VILLAGE THEATRE JUSTIN HUERTAS (Sonny, Usnavi u/s) is making his Village Theatre Mainstage debut. Justin originated the role of Achmed in The 5th Avenue’s world premiere production of Secondhand Lions. He also played cello for the Broadway National Tour of Spring Awakening. By Carly Vester T he lively, real-life neighborhood of Washington Heights lies just over 2,800 miles away from Seattle in Manhattan, New York. Bordered by Harlem to the south and the Hudson River to the west, Washington Heights has a distinctive gritty personality to its streets— a unique personality that was a pleasure for Scenic/Lighting Designer Tom Sturge, a former resident of the Heights, to bring to life on our stage. Since the early 1900s, the Heights have been a haven for minorities; populated by various groups of immigrants, largely including Dominicans and Jewish residents. Tom was truly able to transform our stage into Washington Heights by pulling from his own experiences in the neighborhood. He first moved to Washington Heights in 1987, living about 12 blocks away from where In The Heights takes place. He spent about ten years in this apartment and was struck by the melting pot of culture just in this area. “The neighborhood was predominately Irish and then over the years became more Jewish, and finally Dominican.” He explains. In 1997 he began teaching in Boston, but kept his apartment in New York and ended up returning back to the Heights in 2000— the same summer In The Heights and the infamous blackout during a sweltering 110-degree heat wave took place. Some of Tom’s most prominent memories of the neighborhood have made it into the scenic design for this show, including the Tom Sturge says he did more research for In The Heights than any other show he has worked on in his career. Pictured are three photos of the Washington Heights neighborhood from his research. little details. “One of the things you always noticed while walking around the Heights was the elevation. You got a lot of vistas with trees and buildings, since Washington Heights is the highest point of Manhattan.” He describes. “New York was—and still is—a pretty gritty place. In the Heights people would chew gum and just spit it out on the pavement, smashing it down with their shoe. “You’d walk the streets and see 40 years of gum imprinted on the sidewalk.” He laughs. “We even brought that detail to the floor of this set.” Between these little details, the In The Heights set remains pretty consistent with the Broadway set design. “I think it’s one of the best sets that has ever been on Broadway and we weren’t interested in trying to reinvent that.” Tom notes. “But we are hoping we achieved that authentic look, staying true to the neighborhood with the bodegas and stunning George Washington bridge as a centerpiece.” Though the Heights has integrated into the Upper Westside of New York in the past 14 years (that’s to say fancier shops throughout and yellow cabs zipping around), those who live there have retained the spirit of the Washington Heights community. “This show is about enjoying life as much as possible; enjoying the ‘now’ in life rather than waiting for ‘later.’ And that’s very much how the Washington Heights neighborhood lived life.” Tom says. “I hope people take away the sense of loving life and making the most of what they have right here and now.” CREATINGART One of Village Theatre’s most unique qualities is that every one of our shows is custom designed from the ground up. This Season we are celebrating our team of master craftsmen by taking a look behind the scenes at the dedication and work put into each and every show here at Village Theatre. Brad Bixler is the resident Technical Director at Village Theatre, overseeing the scene shop, paint shop, and prop shop. These shops help produce around 14 shows a year, with only five of them being Mainstage shows and the rest coming from the Issaquah and Everett KIDSTAGE programs, as well as Village Originals Developmental Productions. Brad explains there isn’t ever an ‘average day’ on the job. After all, each show has its challenges. “This is especially true as we get closer to tech weeks.” He notes. “70-80 hour weeks aren’t uncommon.” In general, the Tech Studios (located a block and a half down the street from the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre) open up at 7 AM and Brad will check in with all of the leads in the shops around then. Tech Studios is home to both our scenic construction and paint shops, and above this space are the prop shop and offices for technical staff. The shop does have a couple of calm weeks, despite 95% of the staff members building year-round. “November and December are probably the slowest time.” Brad says. “Generally after we open our holiday show in November we have a few weeks of downtime until we transfer it to Everett in January.” It goes without saying that the work done in our Technical Studios is one of a kind and Brad says he still gets impressed reactions when he explains his work as the Technical Director to people. “Most can’t believe we build everything right here in Issaquah let alone have such an incredible space to work in.” FIVE FAST FACTS 1 Official Title: Technical Director, Issaquah 2 Hobby Outside of Theatre: Golf 3 Year You Started: 2000 4Favorite Musical (To Watch): It’s a tie between Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Brigadoon 5 Drink of Choice: Vodka tonic encoreartsseattle.com 13 Mainstage Support Provided By The Radach Estate “Gene and his wife Adriana loved Village Theatre,” said Sue Barrett, who became close to the couple as a teenager and served as personal representative of the Radach estate. “They were subscribers for many years and he’d always call me the next day to say, ‘It was just fantastic!’ Then he would describe the sets, costumes and music, and marvel at how the actors worked the stage. He believed that Village Theatre was the best theatre in town. So I decided the best way to honor Gene’s legacy as a drama teacher and Village Theatre advocate was to make a substantial investment in training the next generation of actors and in development of new original works for the theatre. The KIDSTAGE mission of “Skills for Theatre, Skills for Life,” reflects so many of Gene’s values about creativity, teamwork and personal responsibility – and he would so appreciate the enthusiasm and talent on stage and behind the scenes of KIDSTAGE productions.
