How long does it take a horseman to find
his missing head? Apparently more than
30 years as Headless Horseman returns to
Conner Prairie again this month. In
October, our hallowed grounds turn into
Conner Scairie for 11 nights of frightfully
delightful fun.
It’s time to elect a new mayor of Conner
Scairie since Lord Moldywart, the haunted
land’s former leader, has accidentally
turned himself into a cute, fuzzy bunny.
Guests will get up close and personal with
the four candidates, all trying to impress
and win votes.
Beautisha is a cosmetics-loving witch who
conjures up magical beauty tips. Dr. Acula
is host of “Monster Mayhem”, a new
game show featuring his wanna-be-standup comedian talents and expertise in all
things pertaining to the underworld. Ed,
the mad scientist, and assistant Esmerelda
also have a new show, “Ed’s Incredible
Chemicals,” and will be mixing up some
chemistry hijinks. Child-like monster
Holly Ween will be entertaining younger
guests with magic stories.
Once they have chosen their candidate and
voted, guests can partake in all the other
ghoulish activities including “The Legend
of Sleepy Hollow” marionette show,

-face with the Headless Horseman on
the haunted hayride..
Headless Horseman is a beloved fall
tradition for many families and for
volunteers, too. We still have many
opportunities for volunteers. Join your
fellow volunteers who have already
enlisted for a night or more of
hauntingly good fun. Sign up for your

the festivities begin and two free
passes to attend another night of
Headless Horseman, for each shift, just
for fun. Shifts are all posted in
Volgistics. If you’ve already signed up,
make sure you read the directions
section in the position description. It
contains instructions for arrival,
parking and other important
information.
Most of all, remember to dress for the
weather. All activities take place
outside and it gets cold on the prairie,
especially once the sun goes down.
Layer your clothing and bring a hat
and gloves. You can always take a
layer off but you can’t add one if you
don’t have it with you. Heads up and
have fun!

Volgistics Year End
On October 31, when our volunteer fiscal
year ends, we will complete our first full
year of record keeping in Volgistics.
Volunteers often ask why our year runs
November1 to October 31.
In the past, when the historic areas closed
for the winter, the rest of Conner Prairie
effectively closed also. It made sense to
calculate volunteer hours and have
volunteer recognition at that time.
While things are a little slower paced in
the winter months now, we are far from
closed and volunteers are still active.
Rather than change record keeping and
move our traditional volunteer
recognition, we left the odd dates in place
and our year ends with Headless
Horseman. We’ve been checking the
system periodically and it looks like
volunteers are doing a good job of
recording hours.
During the first week of November, we
will be pulling reports and tallying
everyone’s hours for the year.
This month is your last chance to record
shifts you may have forgotten or missed.
If you don’t have a computer or access to
Volgistics, contact Pam or Jody and we
can enter hours for you. Volunteers can
only go back 30 days when recording
hours. If you try to enter a date further
back, it won’t be accepted. You must
contact Pam or Jody to do that. Also
remember, if you’ve recorded 100 or
more hours this year, you will be
awarded a free Conner Prairie
membership, another incentive to make
sure your entries are correct.

Conner Prairie will celebrate its
volunteers during the annual recognition
breakfast at 10 a.m. Nov. 21. Invitations
will be mailed at the end of this month.
This is the day we set aside each year to
take a breather following a very busy
season of volunteering and
collectively thank all of you for all that
you do to help us accomplish so much.
So many things couldn’t happen and
frankly wouldn’t be as much fun without
your help.
Please plan to attend the reception and
enjoy the food and fellowship as we
celebrate another great year of
volunteerism. This year will also have
special meaning as it will be Ellen M.
Rosenthal’s last year to attend before she
retires as Conner Prairie’s president and
CEO.

Department Needs Special Events The Conner Prairie Store: The store is in
need of weekend volunteers for the remainder
of the 2015 season. Volunteers in the store
interact with guests of all ages, assist with
purchases, ring sales on the computerized
registers, price, and stock merchandise. Shifts
are all four hours long, either morning or
afternoon and can also be weekdays. For

Recording Headless Horseman Hours:
Special instructions and rules will apply for
recording Headless Horseman hours this
month. First of all, it is very important that
you get your hours in by the end of October.
Our year-end records will not be correct if you
don’t. We will not be using the laptop
touchscreen to sign people in and out each
night. Everyone will be responsible for
recording all hours at home. Volunteer
check-in still takes place each night at the
Apple Store gate and we will check you in on
paper forms, just to make sure everyone
scheduled for the night is here. No one should
enter the building and sign in at the main floor
computer station.
There is still time to sign up for Headless
Horseman if you haven’t already. Additional
positions have been added since the initial
posting in Volgistics. Take another look and
sign up to help with this hauntingly fun event!
SIGN UP IN OCTOBER: Follow the North Star, School and Public
Programs: By the time you receive this
newsletter, Follow the North Star school and
public programs will be posted in Volgistics.
This is Conner Prairie’s nationally acclaimed
program in which participants take on the
role of a fugitive slave traveling along the
Underground Railroad. The school program
takes place weekdays, during the day and the
public, more intense program is at night.
There are several volunteer positions for the
public program that are different and not
available for the school program. Training is
mandatory for all volunteers helping for the
first time this year and highly recommended
for others who have volunteered before. Due
to construction on the grounds, the route
will be different this season making
training mandatory for all Plants and
Path People. Please see the description
section in Volgistics for the dates and times
of training sessions.

Do you want to be a part of history? Conner Prairie President and CEO Ellen Rosenthal and fellow Conner Society members enjoyed a night of rock and roll at Symphony on the Prairie’s Classical Mystery Tour: Music of the Beatles! This VIP event was held in recogni on and apprecia on of the support this core donor group provides throughout the year. Conner Prairie volunteers Maddie Bromley, Jim Bromley and Barb McCall helped greet the VIP guests upon arrival. Conner Prairie wants to make a li le history this year. The cra area of Headless Horseman plans to set a world record and be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records by helping create 6,000 origami bats. That’s only 545 per night.
