Chapter Educators Al General & Jackie Bond H ello Chapter J, Can you believe summer is almost over? School is starting; trees will start changing, and the mornings will feel much cooler (hopefully, this has been a very warm summer). It is time to get ready for those cooler days and get our cold weather gear out. One of the best things to do is dress in layers. This gives you the advantage of being prepared for those cold mornings, than removing layers as the day warms up. This may sound a little early to start talking about cold weather riding but it will be here before you know it. I just returned from working in Maine, the morning temps were in the 40s, we are not far behind. So folks, just something to think about as the summer comes to an end. Ride Safe, Al and Jackie Ride Coordinator Ron Willingham Lending a helping hand H i Chapter J, I had to work a week of 12 hour days in August and my Wing was in the shop for routine service. It was around 7:15 on a Friday evening the 24th and I was on my way with my trailer to pick up my Wing after a long day when I spotted a man on I-97 between Annapolis and Crofton pushing his Harley in the median strip. I was in the right lane and could not get over as the traffic was terrible. So I decided to get my Wing and felt he would already be taken care of on my return south on I-97. I was wrong when I got to the same spot where I saw him he was talking to two other Harley riders on the south side and again I was in the wrong lane to assist. So I went down to Annapolis and turned around to come back. When I got to the median he was talking with a friend who had come with his pickup truck to haul his Harley to his residence but his loading ramps were cable locked with no key. He had a flat front tire. I asked if he needed a transport and he said please. His name was Timmy and lived only 10 minutes away in Glen Burnie. I said I would be glad to transport his Harley if he would ride my Wing and he said you have a deal. He was ecstatic and could not believe that someone would go out of their way to help in this manner. He was amazed at the smooth and quiet ride of my Wing with so many miles on it. He offered to pay and I said no just pay it forward and help someone else. He also said the other two Harley riders were also broke down and I said if they are still there I will offer my assistance. By this time it was dark but I knew where they were so I stopped and offered the same assistance. Again they could not believe that someone would do this. When I stopped they made a comment that my truck looked like the one that had just helped the other man and I said I did. This guy’s name was Ritchie and they were from New Jersey on their way to a wedding the next day in Annapolis and his Harley just died. He said several police had passed and never even stopped to assist. So I transported his Wing to Annapolis Harley Davidson shop ten minutes away and then gave him a ride to a hotel for the night. Again they asked to pay and I said just pay it forward. I finally got home at 10:00. This was an enlightening experience and I felt good about it. I was in the right place at the right time. See you later on some rides. Ride often & ride safe. Ron ! "# $% " $$ !
