A great year ahead
ere we are at the beginning of another busy year for the access
industry; so, no time to waste - let’s get started. All the signs
show that it will be a good year for manufacturers and users as
economies in Europe start to pick up and the North American market
continues to climb.
ConExpo, coming up at the beginning of March in Las Vegas, USA,
will help provide a clearer idea of where things are heading in the
country. There will be a good selection of access equipment companies
there, and plenty of new products between them. The ConExpo
showguide starts on page 20.
Turning to Europe, the UK will host this year’s International Powered
Access Awards (IAPA). Organised by Access International and IPAF, the
awards ceremony will take place in Windsor, near London. It is set to be
a fantastic event, thanks to a great response from the industry - we have
had more than 100 entries from across the world. That’s not including the
Photograph of the Year category which closes on 31 January; so get those
cameras clicking.
As you may already know the award judges have been announced, and,
again, represent the powered access industry around the world. Their vast
experience and impartiality will be great assets to this year’s event. See the
IAPA preview on page 37.
Moving on to another great European institution; APEX is just a
few months away. The three-yearly exhibition, to be held this year in
Amsterdam, instead of its former home Maastricht, is nearly sold out and
will be the biggest ever when it takes place in June. It goes without saying
that the industry will be out in force - expect a large amount of industry
news and product launches at the event and as we lead up to it. See the
News, starting on page 6, for a story about the exhibition.
Apart from those big industry events, this issue of AI includes its usual
feast of features and interviews. Among them, Per Torp, CEO of Time
International and Time Denmark, talks about new products and ventures
in the vehicle mounted segment. The company seeks to throw its might
into the highly competitive 3.5 tonne truck mount market, and beyond.
There is also an in-depth look at the vertical mast sector, starting on
page 15, which holds so much potential internationally and promises
a number of new products. Then there is an enlightening view of the
international mast climbing community, starting on page 31.
That just leaves me to wish you a very happy and successful year ahead.

WORLD NEWS
IN BRIEF
■ The UK’s Prefabricated
Access Suppliers &
Manufacturers Association
(PASMA) trained more than
63000 people to work at height
safely in 2013. This marked a new
record for the mobile access tower
association, as training figures rose
10% on 2012. At the start of 2014,
there were 320000 active PASMA
cards in circulation; a figure that
has continued to rise steeply over
the last five years, as more and
more organizations see the value of
PASMA training courses.
■ Riwal has opened a new
depot in the state of São Paulo,
Brazil. The depot in the Campinas
region comes as Riwal seeks to
broaden its market coverage,
while establishing a closer
proximity to its customers and
maximizing transport efficiency. It
accommodates a range of aerial
work platforms and telehandlers.
In addition it serves as a training
centre offering IPAF certified
courses to operators.
■ Skyjack will supply more
than 250 aerial work platforms
to Modern (Singapore) Access &
Equipment. Comprised mainly
of electric scissors, the order
represents a significant investment
designed to improve the size and
capability of its rental fleet. The
deal comes at an important time
as Skyjack seeks to grow in this
increasingly important market.

NEW ADVERTISING MANAGER AT AI
Mike Posener is the new Advertising Manager of Access International.
Mike took over the position from Wil Holloway, who has been promoted to
head of sales for KHL Americas. Wil continues to play a key role with Access
International thanks to his proximity to contacts in North America; he also
continues as sales manager for AI’s sister magazine, Access, Lift & Handlers,
based at KHL’s Chicago office.
Mike already has a wealth of experience in the access industry having spent
the last eight years as KHL’s sales
representative for German speaking
countries and central Europe across
all its titles.
“Mike’s industry knowledge and
expertise will be a huge asset to
Access International and we are
delighted to have him on board,” said
AI Editor Euan Youdale.

from interim president and CEO
Dominique Bamas this month
( January). Mr Bamas has resigned
in accordance with the Manitou
board of director’s planned
appointment of Mr Denis.
In 2003 Mr Denis joined the
Fraikin Group, a European leader
in truck rentals, for which he
was CEO until August 2013.
He helped grow the group’s
international standing, influenced
the design of industrial vehicles,
and developed services and
financing associated with its
60000-strong fleet.
Mr Denis will take over the
position at Manitou on 13
January for a four year term
expiring at the 2017 shareholders’
Minister of State for Disabled
People, Mike Penning MP
to IPAF CEO Tim Whiteman.
It followed a letter from Mr
Whiteman to the government
in November calling
for an urgent review
of the time taken by
the Health & Safety
Executive (HSE) to
respond to the accident,
which occurred at
Kimberly’s west London
depot in June this year.
“In this case HSE’s Health
and Safety Laboratory (HSL)
began their examination of the
MEWP on 17 July 2013 in the
presence of a representative of
its manufacturer. Their initial
findings were that it appeared
that the machine in question may
not have been calibrated correctly.
This may have allowed the basket
to be extended to a position
in which the MEWP became
unstable,” Mr Penning stated.
The HSE uses safety alerts
to inform industry and the
workforce whenever new safety
concerns emerge. “No safety alert
has been issued on this occasion.
the HSE has no evidence at
present which would suggest that
these machines are unsafe when
properly calibrated and used.”
meeting for financial statements.
Manitou board members
expressed their appreciation to
Mr Bamas for his efforts since
former CEO Jean Christophe
Giroux stepped down in March
last year. Marcel Braud, chairman
of the board, said, “During this
period he [Mr Bamas] stabilised
financing for the next five years,
reduced the debt and initiated
a combination of optimisation
programs and developments from
which the group should benefit in
the upcoming years.”
Mr Braud continued, “It is our
pleasure to welcome Mr Denis
whose appointment marks a
new chapter in the history of
Manitou.”
Italian manufacturer Socage
has sold 1000 units of its
DA320 articulated platform.
The DA320 is a double
articulated truck mount that
can be installed on 3.5 tonne
trucks, such as a Nissan
Cabstar or Iveco Daily.
It has a maximum working
height of 20 m, a maximum
working outreach of 9.5 m
and a basket capacity of 225
kg. The 1000-unit milestone
makes the DA320 one of the
most popular aerial working
platforms sold by Socage.
The company has also
reported sales of 98
platforms in the African
market in the last 12 months,
as it continues to work on
expanding its international
reach.

of US$700 million, is aiming to
reach emerging markets.
JLG and ProDelta end JV
JLG Industries and ProDelta –
owner of Riwal – are to close their
re-rental joint venture RiRent
Europe when current rental
contracts run out, with no new
customers being taken on.
The companies said in a
joint statement that market
circumstances and positions of the
two companies had changed from
when the venture was created.
The two have jointly owned
RiRent for 15 years under a 50/50
ownership split.
In a joint statement, Karel
Huijser, JLG Industries managing
director and vice president for
EAME, and Willem Ledeboer,
CEO of ProDelta, said; “After
a longstanding relationship of
more than 15 years of cooperation
in the RiRent business, today’s
market circumstances as well
as the market position and
operations of ProDelta and
JLG have changed significantly
requiring us to re-focus our
business efforts.
“JLG and ProDelta will
continue to offer their services
to their respective customer
bases independently and we shall
continue to collaborate as good
business partners.”
No further explanation of the
closure was given. In Riwal’s case
it is now operating throughout
Europe and therefore competing

Palfinger takes double
Bobcat has launched its 18 m reach T40180 telescopic handler at
the Intermat Middle East exhibition in Abu Dhabi, UAE. According to
the company’s regional director for the Middle East & Africa, Gaby
Rhayem, telescopic handlers are a small but fast-growing segment in
the region.
“The market [for telescopic handlers) is growing at 10% per year.
The Middle East is focussed on excavators, loaders and skid steer
loaders, but there is good growth in telehandlers and the market is
now around 550 machines per year.
“We are moving the mentality of our customers in the middle east
to more ‘fancy’ machines like telehandlers, mini excavators and
tracked loaders,” he said.
■ Linamar’s industrial division, which is largely made up by Skyjack, reported
a sales increase of 25.1% to US$127.6 million in the third quarter of 2013,
compared the same period in 2012. Operating earnings stood at $6.7 million or
an impressive 837.5% over the third quarter in 2012, when the figure stood at
$0.8 million. For the three months operating earnings stood at $46.8 million, up
from $22.3 million in 2012.
■ Ashtead Group joined the FTSE 100 list of major UK stock exchange quoted
on Friday 20 December. The FTSE 100 is one of the key business lists in the UK
and Europe, comprising the top 100 capitalised business on the London Stock
Exchange. Ashtead has seen its share price increase steadily during 2013, from
around £4.30 at the start of the year to the current high of more than £7.70.

■ Lavendon Group has reported flat rental revenues for 2013 and said it was
confident that profit would reach expected levels, with growth in France and the
Middle East offsetting shrinking revenues in the UK, Germany and Belgium. In
Germany “teething issues” with the implementation of a new IT platform in the
third quarter led to a 13% fall in the final three months of 2013. It led to a 7%
reduction for the full year.

INTERVIEW
The first
24 m VTX 240
on Time’s test
ground.
Per Torp, CEO of TIME International and TIME
Denmark and export manager for parent
company TIME Manufacturing
Making new plans
As CEO of TIME International and TIME Denmark, Per Torp has been largely
responsible for bringing the van mount to the attention of the world since his
unplanned entry into the sector back in the mid-1980s. He talks to Euan Youdale.
uring the early 1980s Per Torp, who
is also Export manager for parent
company TIME Manufacturing
in Waco, Texas, USA, was involved in a
family business producing machinery for the
construction and developed a waste reducer
used in incinerators for crushing down bulky
waste.
After selling that business Mr Torp was
looking around for something new, although
vehicle mounted platforms could not have
been further from his mind.
“There was a company I was interested
in buying which included a Versalift
distributorship. I was not really interested
in that part of it, but the owner had passed
and his wife would not sell it to me unless I
took everything. I was experienced with truck
mounted cranes as my father was an HMF
dealer, so I thought it would be easy enough
to pick up.”
Mr Torp’s initial efforts to engineer
European ‘export options’ for the Versalift
D
machines coming out of Time’s headquarters
in Wheco, would lay the foundations for the
company’s success outside of North America
in the coming years.
“We had a better idea about what was
needed in Europe, so with small changes to
controls, etcetera, the Versalift became more
saleable in Europe.
“At that time machines were mainly sold
into Norway, Belgium and England. And we
became more like a sub-contractor for the
company producing different items for the
European market and supporting secondary
distributors.” At that time mounting was
carried out by the main distributor in each
country.
Spreading out
“In 1991, I was asked to work exclusively
for Versalift, and in 1992 I took it on full
time and started building up a strong net of
distributors across Europe. Also, at that time
we started to look at mounting in fewer places
The VO-455E80

and developing more items, like fly jibs.
Mr Torp is now responsible for Europe,
Africa, Middle and Far East and Oceania.
“The unique concept with Versalift has
been to mount on the van with the sub-frame
up under rather than on the top. Everyone
else came from the philosophy of putting a
subframe on top of the chassis. I came without
the old knowhow. I saw they had already had
done an up under in 1978 in Wheco and
redeveloped it for European vans.”
“We were not the first to put a lift on a
van; that was Ruthmann, but it was a reverse
articulated boom not a telescopic boom.
Combine that with a fly jib and the idea that
you could use a van mount with outriggers; it
was a huge selling point. We then developed
the walk in bucket; next was the walk through
system.”
Such innovations have led to the company’s
famed presence in Northern Europe, but there
has been a steady rise in sales in other parts of
the world, notably the Middle and Far East
as well as Australia and of course interest in
South America.
Versalift’s three new lines: the Heavy Duty,
Medium Duty and Light Duty ranges, which
have been developed over the last four years
and recently completed with new products
at Bauma, have been designed with the
international marketplace in mind and its
different requirements. The details of these
machines have already been covered in the
pages of AI, and cement Time’s reputation in
the van mount sector.
However, the company is also making
serious inroads into the truck mounted sector,
with a particular interest in the 3.5 tonne
truck category aimed at rental companies.

with the TIME
smartbox, shown
here as a complete
workstation.
“We have never been known for producing
these machines to rental companies. We
decided five years ago to focus on rental and
develop machines for the rental business.” It
started with the light duty line for 3.5 tonne
chassis, from 9 to 24 m. The company has
just produced a prototype of the biggest in
that line, the 24 m – more information about
that will follow soon. Next will be a 22 m
machine, followed by a final model in due
course.
New trucks
The series will be completed in the next
two years – specifically on 3.5 tonne chassis.
“That’s a huge market in rental business. “We
are already quite strong in the medium and
heavy areas on chassis from 5 tonne and up
but they are mainly going to end users; there
are few rental companies buying in that area.
“We believe we can take a good market
share in the 3.5 tonne area, except Italy, which
is a very difficult country because it’s where
you have most competitors, so it’s probably
not where our focus will be as we have a very
good distributor base elsewhere.
“My dream is that rental will be 40-50%
of the business,” Says Mr Torp. Currently,
including France and the UK, rental stands at
about 10% of company sales.
But we are very strong in UK, Ireland,
France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark,
Sweden, so we will take advantage of that
strong distributor network, because they
already sell equipment to rental sometimes
through a second line of machines from one of
our colleagues, like Ruthmann.” The company
has a strong relationship with Ruthmann - the
German truck mount manufacturer.
While the company will continue to
concentrate on innovations for van mounts,
Mr Per does not expect the van mount area
of the business to grow a great deal. “We will
be satisfied if we can keep it at the same level
for the next few years. We spend a lot of time
developing our vans but at the same time we
12 accessINTERNATIONAL
AI 01-02 2014 Interview per torp.indd 12
have a strong focus in the 3.5 tonne chassis
market and bigger chassis.”
The strength of the van mount market
chops and changes from country to country
and is also affected by other factors, such as
the loss of the 7.5 tonne Mercedes Vario,
which is not being produced anymore. The
solution is to use a 7.5 ton chassis with a
TIME Smartbox (van box). The benefit is
that with the payload left over, you have a
workshop in which you can stand inside and
upright.”
Although, it should be remembered the 7.5
is a relatively small part of the overall market.
“So now there are the 3.5 tonne or 5 tonne
vans. That’s okay, but if you go back to our
history in Europe, there have been years where
80-90% of what we sold were vans - that’s
down now to about 50-60% across Europe.
The vans business has not gone down; we
have the same or more sales, but we have been
growing in the chassis and pick-ups.”
“The 3.5 tonne truck segment is still a huge
market for developing new machines and a big
market for the future.
But Mr Torp does not think we will see
taller machines than today, “In fact I think we
will go down a bit. The 3.5 tonne gets heavier,
because every time you go from one emission
regulation to the next you add 30 to 60 kg,
and as a manufacturer we have to take that
weight out of our equipment. You can’t keep
taking 60 kg off without also having to reduce
the working height.”
But it’s not just truck mounts that will
tickle the interest of rental companies,
according to Mr Torp pick-ups will be the
next big thing.
to produce a lift for its Amarok pick-up. At
the same time he had been drawing up a
new idea for the quick shift system which
allows multiple attachments for different
applications.
“Overall the rental business is looking for
pick-ups with different sizes of lifts – I see
a lot of opportunities for the future and to
develop new products.”
So far, there are three models with booms
designed specifically for pick-ups: 9, 11 and
14 m telescopic booms, “I don’t believe that
on the telescopic side we will have taller
machines than 14 m, but there will be other
kinds of telescopic boom pick-ups in the
future.”
The interest in the pick-up will be global,
says Mr Torp. “It’s a matter of time for all
countries; I don’t see any country that won’t be
interested, because it’s a small compact 4 x 4,
as they are mostly sold - so you can use them
on rough terrain, for municipalities, rental
companies, or in the backyard, parks and
roads. Pick-ups could become as much as 20%
of our business.”
The company has just opened a new 7000
square metre facility new facility. “Until
a few years ago our main production and
engineering was done in Wheco, Texas at
our main factory, but we would extend the
engineering we already had here in Wheco
for the European market and build prototypes
that would then go into production in
Wheco.”
A few montnts ago the company also
launched the VO-455E80 double lift elevator.
Its assembly replaces a traditional pedestal
and provides a 25 ft (7.6 m) or 33 ft (10 m)
vertical lift. It consists of two arms and is
actuated by two double acting cylinders.
Each arm can be actuated individually,
allowing additional reach over the front or rear
of the vehicle; 25 ft (3.6 m) or 33 ft (4.8 m).
Despite all these areas of growth Mr Torp
remains focused on Versalift’s traditional van
mount market. “We never want to loose the
end user utilities customer for van munts;
that’s a core market.”

The company produced its first pick-up about
four years ago to test the market. Then last
year another big step was made with the
Versalift Quick Shift system, introduced at

VERTICAL MASTS
Making space
Like many sectors, vertical masts are waiting in the wings to move into
emerging markets. In mature markets there is a debate over the need
for taller, higher capacity machines. Euan Youdale reports.
o start things off, let’s talk about the
latest products on the vertical mast
scene; including those that have been
launched in the last 12 months and others that
will be introduced soon.
Early last year JLG launched the Toucan
12E and 12E plus specifically for the
European market. They top the series and
have a 11.83 m and 12.65 m working height,
respectively. Platform size is 1.07 m x 0.70 m
for both, while outreach is 5.10 m and 6.05
m, respectively. Features across the Toucan
series includes tight turning radius and easy
movement in narrow aisles and confined spaces,
along with easier servicing, with quick access to
major system components.
One of the biggest innovations has been
JLG’s move to offer direct brushless AC electric
drive. “Two major advantages of this are nearly
80% reduction in the number of hoses on the
machines, and about a third of the hydraulic
fluid, from about 45 litres to 15 litres,” says
Jeff Ford, JLG global product director, “This is
T
significant from an environmental standpoint
and a leak standpoint.”
Mr Ford added that JLG will launch more
vertical mast products, with information
coming available in the very near future.
ATN’s PIAF 880 R
Low maintenance
French manufacturer ATN’s latest model is
the PIAF 1100R, also launched last year. It
offers a combination of 11 m working height
and a 3.74 m horizontal outreach, says the
company. ATN’s Elisabet Torras Xalma adds,
“This machine is innovative thanks to its 100%
hydraulic system, reducing maintenance to
minimum requirements.”
The company is now developing more
mast booms, this time smaller than the PIAF
range. One of them will be launched at
APEX 2014 in June, with the company’s now
customary 100% hydraulic system and ease
of maintenance. ATN is also working on a
compact boom with 7.5 m working height,
80 cm width, weighing less than one tonne.
SPRINT REPLACES CADDY
Bravi Platforms has rebranded its Caddy vertical mast, renaming it Sprint, following a major update.
The Sprint will be shown for the first time at the Executive Hire Show in the UK during February, together
with current products Leonardo HD and the Spin-Go. It will also be shown at Modex, in Atlanta, USA, in
March.
The Caddy was launched about five years ago and has seen significant sales in the retail sector, said the
manufacturer.
“The intensive use our customers made of this
product over the last four years, particularly in
DIY and hardware stores, highlighted some areas
where it was possible to make improvements”, said
Marina Torres, Bravi sales manager.
With this in mind, Bravi has been working on the
Sprint and other company updates over the last 12
months, including a software upgrade introduced in
June 2013.
Other improvements to the Sprint include new
carbon canopies resistant to shock, scratches
and other damage. The canopy has also been
redesigned so that its contents are completely
enclosed, protecting it from the smallest of debris.
There have also been improvements to
ergonomics: drivability has improved with a shorter
chassis (10 cm shorter than the current version),
adding increased visibility for the operator in driving
position. The machine also offers bigger casters
(250 mm diameter, instead of the current 200 mm),
and the LED fleshing light is fully integrated in the
carbon canopy.
It will be available at the end of this year,
but no further details about either of these
machines are available yet.
Manitou is also keeping its latest project
under wraps, except to say that it will be for the
airline sector. Manitou’s François Desbrière
says, “We are realising a special model which
can be used for the maintenance of aircraft
engines under the bonnet of the engine.” More
details will be available later in the first quarter
of this year.
One of the main features of both its existing
two masts, the 80VJR and 100VJR, is the use
of lifting cylinders without chains. Desbrière
adds, “This limits the maintenance and the
moving parts.”

Genie GR-20

maintenance
JLG’s Toucan 12E+ reaches out.
Terex AWP has also been busy. It recently
launched the Genie GR-26J in North America,
which had previously been released in the CE
market. The narrow chassis and jib allow the
machine to be positioned down tight aisle
ways and while accessing up and over shelving
and equipment. Marie Engstrom, associate
product manager at Terex AWP, explains.
“Having a compact base is key for vertical mast
products which are frequently used indoors
and in finished spaces. The comparatively low
machine weight is important when using the
GR-J products in areas that have floor loading
limitations.”
She added there is no immediate news of
new products, but, “We are currently working
on exciting vertical mast innovations that will
increase the productivity for users and provide
exceptional value.”
Compact reach
Compactness and reach was also on the
Snorkel’s mind when it enhanced its M1230E
mast with a 500 mm roll-out deck extension.
This optional extra extends the platform size to
1.46 m, providing additional reach without the
need to move the machine.
Enrique Garcia Delgado, regional sales
manager for Europe, says, “An all-steel chassis,
coupled with the ability to work outdoors on
the slab means it delivers an excellent rental
return on investment.”
The M1230E remains one of Snorkel’s
most popular products, says the company. The
robust reverse concentric mast design gives the
M1230E its lift capacity of 227kg.
As Mr Delgado adds, “It is important to
build machines for the right applications.
So, for example, the M1230E has an allsteel chassis and mast because it is designed
for construction applications, so it has to be
robust.”
On the other hand, the 6 m lightweight,
compact electric SPM20, is designed to be
light weight and compact for internal facilities
maintenance duties such as HVAC or light
fittings, adds Mr Delgado.
16 accessINTERNATIONAL
Access 01-02 2014 Vertical masts.indd 16
Snorkel has no plans at present to add to its
mast lift product range.
On the subject of compact requirements,
Mr Ford expands on JLG’s Toucan 12E.
“We maintained the 1.2 m width which
is obviously important for accessing tight
areas in warehouses, retail stores, industrial
maintenance, car assembly plants and very tight
racking. The ability to get into these tight space
and swing more than 300 degrees to reach up
and over – that’s what these lifts do
According to Ms Engstrom, one of
Genie’s biggest challenges is increasing
functionality while remaining compact and cost
effectiveness. “These products are frequently
used inside so the overall foot print and weight
must always be kept in mind. To increase the
range of access from the platform, this often
means a larger footprint, a heavier machine, or
both.” At Snorkel, Mr Delgado agrees. “As most
of these products are designed primarily
for interior use, low weight and compact
dimensions are crucial KPIs. So you have
to balance the working envelope against the
increasingly stringent weight restrictions on
floors in commercial buildings.”
Baring this in mind, have vertical masts
reached their limits in terms of height and
outreach? The answer from most of the
manufacturers is no; however there are some
obstacles blocking the way.
As Mr Desbrière at Manitou explains the 10
m segment is the biggest market, “and we have
the machine to fit this segment.”
But that could conceivably change in the
future, as, for example, racking heights increase.
Ms Engstrom, explains, “Customers continue
to request increased access at both higher
and lower heights. In the higher range, this
can be challenging because the machine may
need to be heavier or wider for stability. These
machines are often used inside, sometimes with
floor loading and size limitations. As such,
there are trade-offs to be considered when
evaluating vertical mast units reaching greater
heights.”
High destination
JLG has a similar philosophy when it comes
to taller machines. “There are lighter materials
that allow us to do more. It may allow us to go
higher and maintain that gross vehicle weight.
But at 1.2 m width, we are talking about
between 4300 and 4900 kg on these models,
so they get pretty heavy from a transport
standpoint,” comments Mr Ford. “They have
to be small enough to get them in to a 30/32
inch door or an elevator door. Technology now
probably gets us to about 20 feet, a little over
6 m.”
Spending time and money in research and
development for bigger machines has to be
met with enough customers to pay for it.
“You can see racking heights in warehouses
maybe going to four or five metres instead of
three or four metre shelves.” Mr Ford adds,
Manitou 100 VJR carrying
out warehouse duties.

“load capacity is a big issue in markets with
load sensing in particular - having sufficient
capacity is important to get the right amount
of operators and tools up to the worksite with
you. So, Platform size and capacity are gaining
importance in all mature markets.”
At the more compact end there are also
challenges. Ms Engstrom, comments, “As more
and more ladders are being removed due to
regulations or jobsite requirements, customers
are looking for safe access at lower heights. Customers are looking for compact machines
that can be easily transported and setup by one
person. These lifts are used for maintenance
and light duty construction and need to be
simple to use in a variety of applications.
Snorkel demonstrates its
versatility in a shopping
centre ceiling-height
repair application.
Expanding applications
As mentioned, masts are finding more
applications. Ms Torras Xalma says most
of ATN’s products are currently used in
maintenance in buildings, warehouses,
shopping centres and other stores. “But we
receive new applications and demands, for
example, using PIAF machines in cold stores
thanks to their fully hydraulic concept and
translation system, or in the case of PIAF, on
tracks, used for pruning trees.”
Ms Engstrom expands on that point.
“Customers and end users are becoming
more educated and are expanding the limits
of where machines can be used, in all kinds
of applications. For example, customers are
asking more detailed and specific questions
about floor loading as they have a better
understanding of the jobsite requirements.”
Snorkel is selling more into facilities
maintenance and retail applications in
developing markets. “For example,” says Mr
Steel erection application
for Manitou 100 VJR.
Delgado, “A new shopping centre in Cyprus
recently purchased a Snorkel SPM20 selfpropelled mast lift. We are finding much
more awareness of safer working at height in
non-construction sectors within these emerging
markets.”
Education is one of the key challenges in all
emerging markets. “Making users aware of the
advantages, including the safety advantages,”
says Mr Ford. “The safety advantages of using a
work platform will see expansion in emerging
markets, especially at the lower end.”
For example, “With the push around there
is a lower cost and there is less work from a
resource perspective.”
ATN is working to introduce its machines
in Asian countries, including China and
Singapore. “In China, for example, labour
costs are increasing quickly. So, Chinese
enterprises prefer to invest in machines which
are becoming more reliable and cheaper than
labour. On other hand, Singapore, is very well
developed, giving many opportunities. The lack
of machines in these countries, gives ATN a
possibility to introduce itself in this market.”
Overall Manitou says the market for masts
in Europe over the year as been relatively flat,
“But it is increasing outside of Europe.”
Breaking down the product types, a
spokesman for Haulotte explains, “For masts
with jibs, Europe is the growth market, in
North American market has already seen a
good increase. For fixed masts without jibs,
North America is the most important market
and Asia is registering a good growth.”
Ms Engstrom adds, “The self-propelled
market seems to be seeing more growth than
manually propelled. The Asia Pacific regions,
including China, have growing markets at this
time specifically in self propelled.”
Replacing ladders
Even in Europe, it depends on the country. Ms
Torras Xalma says, “In France mast booms are
not considered as a niche product, they are used

for industrial maintenance, shopping centres
and for light construction duties.
Other countries such as, UK, Scandinavian
countries or Germany, mast booms find their
place thanks to working at height legislation,
which has pushed to rental companies to invest,
seriously, in the sector.”
Ultimately, the main driver for growth in
the vertical mast sector continues to be the
removal of ladders from jobsites. Ms Engstrom
explains, “This is causing users who previously
were unfamiliar with aerial products to evaluate
how they are getting to height safely. This is
true in both developing countries as well as
those that already have complete offerings of
aerial work platforms. She adds, “Markets will continue to develop
at both higher and lower heights on products
with a small footprint. Simple, cost effective
vertical mast products will continue to develop
at low heights to replace ladders.” AI

MEC Aerial Work Platforms is introducing
a 60 ft (20.2 m) rough terrain scissor to
compete with European-produced models and
will make its debut at ConExpo.
The MEC 6092RT is the largest scissor
to be manufactured in North America and
joins the MEC ‘92’ Ultra-Deck rough terrain
scissor lift series. It is based on the existing
MEC 5492RT, which up until now has been
North America’s tallest production scissor lift.
“The 6092RT takes large platform scissor
lifts to heights that have been designated only
for boom lifts in the North American market,”
said Jim Tolle, MEC director of international
markets. “The justification behind the 6092RT

is to address the highly priced European
competitive models. We have recognised a
large gap in the large deck European scissor
lift product range versus the large deck North
American product range.
MANITOU NORTH AMERICA will show the MHT
10225 telescopic handler with a 49500 pound
maximum capacity. The MHT is designed
for applications requiring heavier lift capacity
such as mining, quarries, heavy bridge
construction or steel erection.
The MHT 10225 is powered by a 175 hp
Tier III Mercedes turbo diesel engine and
is equipped with a two speed hydrostatic
transmission for maneuverability and ease
of operation. The manufacturer says it has
excellent drawbar pull equating to good rough
terrain performance.

trailer mounted platforms, along with the
TD42 tracked platform. Self propelled booms
will include the SP50NE, SP50 Hybrid and
SP64D 4 x 4. The self-drive SD34DE will
also be there.
OMMELIFT will display its 2750 RXBDJ
tracked platform. Its rubber-tracked
undercarriage, coupled with Kubota diesel
engine, allows its lifts to traverse soft muddy
terrain, hilly lawns and delicate indoor
surfaces of all types with ease and without any
impact, says the company.
Battery power, rechargeable from either
mains or by the diesel engine generator,
offers clean and pollution-free use indoors
and greatly increases fuel efficiency of the
diesel engine by being a true Hybrid system.
Compact dimensions allow access through
tight passages, while variable spread outriggers
and deployment ability on slopes up to 22
degrees assure that a safe work configuration
always can be found.
PILOSIO will show its MP multidirectional
scaffolding system that utilises tube and
joint scaffolding products. A special washer
welded to the vertical uprights offers four
orthogonal fastenings for stringers and it has
an additional four slotted holes that allow
fastening using variable angles over almost
360 degrees.
In addition the hooking system with wedge
and washer is easy to lock and very quick
during assembly and disassembly. The MP can
be used as facade scaffolding for maintenance
and a wide range of other applications.
REACHMASTER is now representing two new
manufacturers as well as new models from the
current lineup.
One of them is PB LIFTTECHNIK with its ultra-

ICUEE trade show in Louisville, Kentucky in
October 2013.
SKYJACK will unveil a new rough terrain
scissor lift and updated Tier 4i telehandlers at
the show.
The new SJ6832 RTE electric roughterrain scissor lift allows users to “easily
switch between indoor and outdoor use while
its emission-free operation makes it wellsuited to projects, regions or countries where
machinery pollution restrictions are in place,”
a spokesman said.
To simplify operator and service training,
the SJ6832 RTE was built on the same chassis
as the existing diesel and dual fuel SJ6832 RT
units.
From the telehandler line, the
Ruthmann
T 175A
updated ZB2044 will feature a Tier 4i engine.
The maximum capacity 20000-pound (9072
kg) telehandler features a three-section boom
and a maximum lifting height of 44 feet
(13.67 m). The ZB2044 will be joined by the
VR1056 telehandler, which is also now Tier
4i compliant. The VR1056 has a maximum
payload of 10000 pounds (4540 kg) and a
maximum lift height of 56 feet (17.14 m).
Visitors on the SNORKEL/XTREME stand at
ConExpo can expect a range of equipment
from both manufacturers, including new
large-capacity telehandlers from Xtreme
and new and updated or revamped Snorkel
models.
SNORKEL will launch a new series of
telehandlers, just months after Xtreme
Manufacturing took majority ownership of
the AWP manufacturer.
Aimed to compete with popular telehandler
products currently manufactured by Genie,
JLG and Manitou and others, the Snorkel
line will feature units in the 5900 pound to
12000 pound capacity range. The first series
will be aimed at the North American market
with a production date goal of April 2014,
while a global series will be on the market
in September. Specifications and other
information are still being completed.
XTREME MANUFACTURING will debut its largestcapacity telehandler at the show. The 65000
pound capacity telehandler will weigh 95000
pounds and is designed for work on bridges
and pipe-handling, Don Ahern, Xtreme
owner told AI sister magazine American Lift &
Handlers.
On the other end of the spectrum, Xtreme
Teupen’s
LEO21GT
will also debut its most compact telehandler,
the XR5919, that features 5900 pounds of
capacity, 19 feet of lift height and 63 hp.
The unit is being produced to compete with
smaller telehandlers currently on the market.
When both debut at ConExpo, Xtreme will
complete its range, totalling 15 models. “The
forks on the new unit weigh 2000 pounds
each,” Mr Ahern said.
Mr Ahern that added a complete new series
of aerial work platforms featuring “neverbefore-seen technology” will also be on the
stand. Snorkel is also displaying machines from
its existing product categories, including the
A46JRT articulating rough terrain boom;
A38E all-electric articulating boom; Speed
Level rough terrain lift; and M1230E selfpropelled mast lift.
TEREX AWP will showcase a comprehensive
range of products and services.
Genie branded products will include the
Genie SX-180 telescopic boom, the Genie
GS-4069 bi-energy hybrid scissor lift, the
Genie GTH-1544 telehandler and more.
Now in production, the Genie SX-180
boom has a platform height of 180 feet and
can be driven at full height. The stowed length
shrinks it down to 47 ft and the retracted
width to 98 inches making it transportable
without special over-width permits. The lift
capacity is 750 lbs.
The boom is suited for applications in
the oil and gas industries, commercial
construction, industrial construction and
maintenance, wind farm applications, power
stations and utilities and large metropolitan
cities that require work at height.
The new Genie GS-4069 bi-energy hybrid
scissor lift will also be on display. As part of
the new Genie BE69 hybrid scissor lift series,
it features two selectable operating modes.
TEUPEN has new North American
nomenclature for its LEO series. Shown here
is the LEO21GT.
At Conexpo, German tracked lift specialist
Teupen will introduce a new nomenclature
for its LEO series to better suit the North
American market.
For example, the new 21m model,
introduced as LEO21GT in Europe, will be
named TL63A , which equates to: tracked
Lift - 63 ft platform height - articulated.
The new model features an outreach of
39 feet (12m) at 551lbs (250kg) basket
load in the entire working area, along with a
stabilising system which allows setting up the
lift on slopes of up to 30%. Along with the new TL63A, Teupen will
also introduce the 2014 version of existing
models of the LEO series, now also rebranded under the new naming system.
AI will have a full round-up of products
at the show in the March/April issue of the
magazine. There will also be North America
regional report in the same issue. Look out for
more new products destined to be at the show
as they are announced at www.khl.com.

Making changes
SECONDARY GUARDING
A groundbreaking announcement in the UK has seen the term ‘anti-entrapment’ changed to ‘secondary
guarding’.
At the end of last year, the UK’s Strategic Forum for Construction Plant Safety Group’s (SFPSG) sub-group for
Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) Safety, unanimously agreed to change the terminology associated with
devices designed to reduce the risk of overhead crushing from ‘anti-entrapment’ to ‘secondary guarding.’
The SFPSG MEWP group is made up of experts from the industry including IPAF, the CPA, UKCG,
manufacturers and users and agreed the change at their second meeting held on 18 November 2013.
The agreement was based on a proposal prepared by the International Powered Access Federation’s (IPAF)
technical officer Chris Wraith which stated that, “all MEWPS are safe by design and are fitted as standard with a
function enable device which provides primary guarding system.
“Additional equipment or device(s), which can be fitted to a MEWP in order to reduce the risk of overhead
crushing injury, offer secondary protection and should not replace good practice by management and the
operator.
“Anti-entrapment devices do not prevent entrapment – they offer a secondary guarding option to assist
management in reducing the risk of serious injury from overhead hazards. Therefore the term ‘anti-entrapment’
is incorrect and the term ‘secondary guarding’ should be adopted by the industry,” the statement concluded.
Speaking to AI, Mr Wraith says the decision was, “Very significant”, adding, “Many devices are activated
once entrapment has taken place and so cannot
really be called anti-entrapment devices – they can
bring complacency to operators who think they have
an anti-entrapment device fitted, so they don’t have
to take as much care. IPAF hopes that everyone will
start to use the term secondary guarding to avoid
confusion.”
As Mr Wraith explains, convincing the industry
that the change was needed was not an easy task.
“When we first discussed this, a lot of people felt
anti-entrapment was the recognised terminology,
which meant everyone understood what we were
talking about, so we should just continue with what is
already accepted in the industry.
“IPAF’s response was; the terminology we have
in the industry is wrong and if we carry on with
something that is wrong, it is going to get more
wrong. But a constructive argument was put forward
by IPAF, showing the benefits and so the decision
was carried.”
It should be noted; the issue surrounding
secondary guarding is felt most strongly in the UK,
where it has become somewhat of an issue, and
where most of products related to it have been
introduced.

to preliminary results from IPAF’s accident
database, (see graph below).
The main causes of these fatalities
were: overturn (16), fall from height (13),
entrapment (10), electrocution (7), impact
with MEWP (4) and falling object (2). In one
case, the cause of the fatality was not known.
Almost half of the number of reported
fatalities (26 or 49%) involved mobile booms.
Fourteen fatalities (26%) involved mobile
verticals and 11 (21%) involved static booms.
In two cases (4%), the type of machine
involved was not known.
Thirty (57%) of the fatalities occurred in
the USA, home of 54% of the world’s rental
fleet. Three fatalities each were reported in
Germany, Spain and the UK, two fatalities
each in Belgium, Canada, France and the
Netherlands, and one each in Armenia,
Australia, Ireland, Malaysia, Norway and in
the Middle East.
IPAF’s accident reporting project was
launched in January 2012 and has filled a
gap where there was previously no single
mechanism for reporting and analysing serious
accidents involving MEWPs/AWPs and

no definitive data on the number and main
causes of fatal accidents. In the first year of
the project, 32 fatalities worldwide involving
MEWPs/AWPs were reported.
IPAF technical officer Chris Wraith
stressed that the accident project is still in
an early stage and cautioned against direct
comparisons in its second year. “It will be at
least 2016-2017 before any realistic year-onyear comparison on the frequency of accidents
can be of value,” he said. “The comparative
figures presented are for information only
and do not in any way suggest an increase in
the number of MEWP-related fatalities from
2012 to 2013. They are more an indication
that the awareness and success of the project is
growing. Powered access is probably the safest
way of performing temporary work at height.
The industry is becoming more aware and
reporting accidents, rather than having more
accidents.”
“As awareness of this ground-breaking
project grows worldwide, so does the number
of countries, companies and individuals
who contribute to it,” said IPAF CEO Tim
Whiteman. “Over time, this project will
capture more comprehensive data and allow
us to draw more useful comparisons and
conclusions. I would encourage anyone who
is aware of a MEWP-related fatality in their
country to report it to the IPAF website. There
is a mechanism to make anonymous reports
should people wish to do so.”
IPAF rental company members in the UK
have voluntarily committed to report any
known MEWP accidents involving their

making a move on the

Alberto Martínez Alonso,
chief executive officer of
Alba, explains all to AI.
W
HAT IS YOUR LATEST MAST
CLIMBING EQUIPMENT?
We have made a big effort in
research and development of our technical
department, developing a complete range
of rack and pinion hoists based on our new
M550 mast: for personnel up to 2000 kg (or
20 people) with three speeds (20m/min, 40 m/
min and 60 m/min), and for materials up to
2000 kg (standard bases and special measures
for drywall plaques). It can be assembled with
one or twin identical cabins, or both combined
on one single mast, reaching heights beyond
250 m.
Based on this same mast, we have developed
the new PEC-150 work platform with
more capacity and greater size. We have also
developed diverse transport platforms of
varied lifting capacities, compatible with the
different masts from our product catalogue.
The commercialisation of these new products
started more than a year ago, and many of
them are already assembled and at work sites in
Europe, Africa and the Americas, with orders
from Asia.
Alba work

high-rise
application.
WHAT EQUIPMENT WILL YOU LAUNCH OVER
THE NEXT FEW MONTHS?
A new work platform, the PT-1200 is launched
in January 2014, with a lifting capacity of up to
1200 kg (or 10 passengers), double speed and
EC accreditation.
We will finish in the first trimester of 2014
with the extension and complete renovation of
our range of hoists for passengers and materials,
incorporating the newly developed single
electronic card that will manage every machine
of our range. Therefore, we will provide a
totally renewed range, including passenger
hoists: EPM-450, EPM-1000 and EDC-2000,
material hoists: MC-450, MC-1000, MC1800F and MC-2000, transport platforms:
PT-450, PT-1200, PT-1000F, PT-1700F and
PT-1800, and mast climbing work platforms
PEC-80, PEC-100, PEC-120 and PEC-150.
WHERE ARE YOU SELLING MOST OF YOUR
EQUIPMENT?
At the beginning of this crisis, Alba was the
leading manufacturer in Spain of mast climbing
machines and had an important standing in the
world market. Since the construction crisis in
Spain we have strengthened our international
affairs in most continents, including new
markets, meaning we have tripled our export
turnover.
Regarding products, there has been a trend
towards medium sized machines, around
1000 kg, and in many cases, also customised
machines for small work spaces or special
loadings, etc.
It has been essential to expand our technical
department, allowing us to develop research
and attend to the requirements of our
customers promptly.
WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES IN THE MAST
CLIMBING SECTOR?
Worldwide, the sector has been knocked
heavily by the crisis, with general decreases
in sales during these last years. We think that
the recovery of the market is going to be slow,
and the requirements are going to follow the
path of adapting to the specific demands of
our clients; going from standard equipment to
customised equipment for special projects. It is
also necessary to adapt existing equipment and
widen the range to meet the particular needs in
developing countries.
WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT
DEVELOPMENTS IN THE SECTOR
The most important developments have been
achieved as a consequence of higher standards
of security systems, as well as improvements in
design that lead to an increase in useful life and
also less cost of maintenance and assembly.
For example, Alba has released the single
electronic card for machine management.
This has raised the security levels of our
equipment, with back-up security components
in case of the failure of the main one, the
assembly of our parachute break, as well as
a re-design of the whole range of machines
- masts, cabins, etc. All of them compatible
with previous generations, resulting in hoists
and platforms that are lighter and easier
to assemble, as well as tough and with less
maintenance.
WHAT APPLICATIONS ARE GROWING?
As we have mentioned previously, needs are
growing for special applications, for work of
high technical complexity, in the industrial
sector and maintenance to civil engineering
constructions.
There are also increases of applications in
areas such as crane hoists, or elevators adapted
to wind turbines, solar energy plants, etc.
The worldwide market for mast climbing
equipment is still oversized and, so, the
potential for growth goes this way.

emand for mast climbing work
platforms is expected to grow in the
Indian infrastructure sector in the
coming years. A growing concern for safety, a
lack of skilled labour required for construction
in big metropolitan and smaller cities, and
easier erection compared to conventional
scaffolding techniques are believed to be the
major reasons for the growing demand among
Indian contractors.
Demand is also being helped by the
increased construction of high rise residential
and commercial buildings, aluminium and
glass claddings, external brick works, external
plastering and delicate material handling.
Construction of chimneys and cooling towers
at thermal power plants and ship maintenance
are the other major emerging applications of
mast climbing climbers in India. The Indian
government is supporting this by ordering
additional thermal power capacity.
According to industry estimates, the size of
the mast climbing sector in India is around 200
units a year at present. The future demand of
mast climbers will be determined by growing
the consciousness among contractors of their
existence and value.
AD Bhosale, assistant vice president,
D
material handling division at mast climber
manufacturer Universal Construction
Machinery & Equipment India, says, “To
enhance the awareness of mast climbers, we are
holding seminars and product demonstrations,
along with holding training programmes as
the concept of their usage is still in a formative
stage in India.”
Universal is one of India’s biggest
manufacturers of mast climbing platforms. It
produces the Xygo series of machines at its
Shivare plant near Pune in Western India.
The platform has a maximum load of
1000 kg, while platform size is 10 m x 15
SCAFFOLDING ALTERNATIVE
Klimer Platforms recently supplied the Cleveland
Marble Mosaic Company with a Klimer monorail
system to provide restoration and repair work on
the Columbus Safety Building project in Ohio, USA.
Due to the building’s insulation being improperly
installed when the building was originally built,
all the limestone exterior had
to be removed for repairs to be
made. Cleveland Marble Mosaic
Company used a Klimer monorail
system to remove the large
pieces of limestone. Another
trade completed the spray foam
insulation and an additional trade
caulked and cleaned the building.
The Klimer product was used
over conventional scaffolding
and swing stage scaffolding to
increase production and safety,
reduce ties, reduce project
duration. All three trades safely
operated the equipment during
three work shifts.

m. Universal’s clients are primarily rental
companies. It has supplied around 80 units to
contractors Sahara Projects, ETA Bangalore,
Rajdeep Builders and Jackson Housing for
residential and commercial housing projects.
A programme of awareness for mast climbers
in India is also being carried out by Everest
Engineering Equipment India. It is carrying
out operators training for erection, dismantling
and maintenance. The company has entered
into a recent exclusive distribution tie up with
GJJ of China for marketing its mast climbers
in India. Under the marketing alliance, Everest
will be marketing GJJ’s SCP230/9D and SCP
200/1D single mast and twin mast platforms. It
will be also marketing ZLP 500 and 7LP 800
suspended platforms.
PV Ramdev, managing director at Everest
Engineering says, “The platforms have gained
popularity with Indian contractors, as they
can be promptly erected at sites with space
restrictions, mainly in bigger cities. Though
the initial investments may be higher than the
conventional scaffolding techniques, contractors
can have increased construction uptime as
a majority of projects in India are getting
constructed by engineering procurement and
through the commissioning of ever tighter
work schedules.”
Everest has supplied around 60 mast
climbers to Indian construction majors like
Larsen and Toubro, JMC Projects and others.
Everest is hoping to sell 100 units by 2014
to 2015.

Global intentions
For Italian manufacturer Safi, niche operations and
emerging markets are its livelihood.
afi is using its relatively small size to
concentrate on niche markets, which
are attracting more business for mast
climbers.
“We can customise our machines for any
request. Our last machine was a special
machine for the shipyard industry in Italy,
it can lift materials and persons up to 13
tonnes,” says Nael Souqi, regional sales
manager at Safi.
Safi has turned its attention shipbuilding.
Three months ago it started work in Venice to
install cabins into a 60 m high cruise ship. The
cabins are pre-build elsewhere and transported
to the dockside, where Safi’s machine
transports them straight off the trailer and up
to the appropriated position in the ship’s hull.
Safi is also working on a tower crane hoist
in readiness for EN regulations that come in
to force in 2015. They state that tower crane
over 40 m high must have an operator hoist.
It will have a hoisting speed of 15 m/min, one
electric motor, a mechanical safety break, and
can be controlled from the ground or hoist.
Capacity will be about 300 to 400 kg.
Asia is a particularly interesting destination.
The company has designed a platform for
tunnels. “In Asia, and many countries in
Europe, you have very high prices for land,
so now governments are looking to more
S
underground projects for power cables, waste
water, metros, etc,” says Mr Souqi.
Specifications for the machine are still
under wraps, but the product will move
downwards as the ground is excavated, by
placing new mast sections underneath each
time it arrives at the bottom of the section it
is using.
“There are a lot of competitors, so we have
to find out clients in these types of projects
where no one can compete. We are small
and flexible, which means you can give us a
problem and we can provide a solution.”
The Middle East is very important to the
company, with 35-40% of its exports going to
the region. However, there are still challenges.
“The Middle East is a difficult market; you
have explain these ideas to the contractors to
change their mentality.”
Looking further east, he adds, “I think
the South East Asia is the most important
market nowadays; Singapore, Malaysia, which
is booming, and Indonesia - governments are
providing more for infrastructure.”
Mr Nael continues, “Oil and gas is also very
important, because we make explosion proof
machinery – for us there is a lot of business
around this type of elevators.”
In the home market of Europe rental is
becoming increasing important. “A rental fleet
gives a second option to contractors to save
some money.” Of business in Europe rental is
around 40%, while sales stands at 25% - sales
used to be around 35%.
Mr Souqi provides an example. Often
machines are used for one job, and then must
be stored at great expense and depreciate in
value as they sit around waiting to be used
again.
A machine that costs €100000 new will be
subject to those extra costs. But if the company
chooses to rent, it will get full service for the
entirety of the job and then the machine will
be taken of its hands – the total cost may be
around €60000; in effect a saving of €40000.
“It’s very simple but very important to avoid
having machines in warehouses.

SHIPBUILDING IN VENICE
Maber recently installed two MB C 2000/150-SR transport platforms with VFD for use in the construction of
a cruise ship for Italian shipbuilder in Venice.
The MB C 2000/150-SR transport platforms are being used for transporting people and small loads. The
platforms have a capacity of 1500 kg each and a dimension of 1.5 m x 3.2 m, and have been fitted with a
VFD (variable frequency device) for smooth start and stop, reducing power consumption. They offer a hoist
speed of up to 32 m/min for loads and 12 m/min for persons.
Maber also developed a mechanical system to automatically adjust the entry level on the dock, either up
and down or left and right, to accommodate changes in tide, wind and the weight of the vessel.
The ship, which measures 38 m wide and 50 m high with a total length of 300 m, can move up to 1.5 m
up or down and 1.2 m left or right due to tide and wind fluctuations.
Stros, a Czech Republic-based
manufacturer, has entered the North
American market by storm over the
last few years. According to Ondrej
Susa, Stros sales manager, business is
outstandingly good for the company right
now, especially in New York (pictured

INTERVIEW
‘Industrial’ rentals now
account for around 25%
of HERC’s total business,
up from 15% in 2006.
Making gains
With aerial work platforms steadily increasing their
prominence at Hertz Equipment Rental Co (HERC), the
company is also viewing international expansion.
Murray Pollok speaks to its president.
ois Boyd’s appointment as president of
Hertz Equipment Rental Co (HERC)
in April 2011 proved to be good timing,
with her tenure coinciding with the US rental
recovery and the return to growth of the
HERC business itself.
She was probably due a break, since her
previous task at Hertz had been to take
Advantage Rent A Car – acquired by Hertz out
of bankruptcy in 2009 – back into profitability,
something that she achieved before the switch
to HERC.
Since then her leadership at the rental
business has been a story of capitalising on the
North America upturn – HERC’s revenues
grew by 12% in 2011, 15% in 2012 and 14%
in the first nine months of last year – and
increased engagement in international markets.
Ms Boyd says the much talked about
increase in rental penetration in the US has
helped propel the North America growth, with
some contractors now favouring rental over
ownership. “It appears that it will continue to
trend that way – a lot of people got stung when
the downturn came.”
At the same time as that ‘secular shift’, other
markets have opened up; “There is an ongoing
upturn in oil and gas production in North
America. So that has continued to absorb more
equipment.”
While Ms Boyd remains cautious about
the US economy – describing it as “solid, but
not robust” – it is HERC’s North American
L
business that has been driving the improved
results, which is not surprising given that it still
represents more than 90% of the company’s
annual US$1.4 billion revenues.
With the growth have come significant
changes in the way HERC operates in North
America, with traditional construction markets
now representing 35% of revenues, down from
50% at the peak of the market in 2006 when
HERC’s revenues were nearer $1.7 billion.
Filling the gap has been the ‘industrial’
sector, which now accounts for 25% of the
total, up from 15% in 2006. “Construction
business has been HERC’s claim to fame, but
it’s very cyclical”, says Ms Boyd, “We need
diversification and stability in the business,
and we need to be the right size to take
construction business when it comes back.
Industrial sectors are more stable – they are
always doing plant turnarounds and shutdowns
[for maintenance].”
This has meant that HERC has had to
restructure its depot footprint, migrating to
new areas where its customers are, whether
through acquisitions or greenfield openings.
Hand-in-hand with this diversification
has been a new hub and spoke strategy, with
plans to develop around 20 to 25 major hubs,
centralising fleet servicing and repair activities.
“We expect to have eight to 10 superhubs by
the end of 2014,” she says.
Also filling the gap left by the construction
downturn has been niche or specialty rentals,
Lois Boyd, president of Hertz Equipment Rental
Corp (HERC).
including pumps, power and entertainment/
film rentals, the latter boosted by the 2012
acquisition of Cinelease. This kind of
equipment now represents around 15% of
the fleet, double what it was in 2006, and is
presenting further growth opportunities.
Platform growth
It is notable that aerial platforms continue to
occupy an important place in the fleet – aerials
have increased as a proportion of the fleet
from 22% in 2006 to 24% in 2012. This reflects
the ubiquity of scissors and booms in the
expanding industrial sector as well as in niche
markets like entertainment and film rentals.
That contrasts markedly with the fall in the
size of the earthmoving fleet, down from 30%
of the total in 2006 to 22% now, reflecting the
reduced exposure to pure construction.
Given the size of the company and its parent,
there are some who wonder why it has been
relatively modest in its international expansion.
These businesses still represent only 10% of
total revenues, and are dominated by the wellestablished operations in France and Spain.
Despite this domestic focus, HERC has
continued to invest in its Chinese operation –

where it currently has around five locations – as
well as Saudi Arabia, with local partner Dayim
Holdings, where it recently opened a second
location.
A HERC aerial platform

Chongqing International
Expo Center in China.
International ideas
However, it is Europe where the main
international business is, and where HERC
has been weathering a long downturn, which
has led the company to scale back its Spanish
operation and focus on power rentals. In France
it operates a more conventional general rentals
operation with more than 60 locations.
Ms Boyd says the European operation “is
coming out of a downturn. We have stabilised
that business and projects are in play to
optimise the business.
“There’s a positive explosion of energy going
on in Europe. Once we get our business to the
level we set in the plan, which I think is coming
soon, we’ll look at other opportunities…I think
you’ll be reading news from us, maybe even
during next year [2014] and 2015, on things
that are going on in Europe.”
Of course, for HERC, the choice in entering
international markets is whether to do it itself
– corporately – or through a franchise partner,
in some cases existing car franchise holders.
So, for example, new HERC operations
in Mongolia and Chile – both areas with
expanding mining and natural resource sectors
– are being undertaken through franchises.
Franchises, of course, make it possible to enter a
market without the capital investment required
of a corporate initiative.
Wouldn’t Australia be a natural candidate?
“Australia is very saturated”, she explains, “We
did look but the EBITDA multiples they
wanted [for acquisitions] were pretty high, so
that didn’t make financial sense. We looked at
greenfield as well, but the timing isn’t right, as
it’s into a bit of a downturn.”
India and South Africa remain on HERC’s
‘potential’ list, but China and Saudi Arabia are

the two markets where it has decided to go on
its own. “We see that the China market will
be expanding on an ongoing basis…we are
watching China carefully, and we’re looking at
multiple growth strategies. We are doing a lot
to diversify the customer base there.”
With international revenues still representing
only 10% of revenues, AI asks if a target of 25%
within five years would be realistic. “We want
[international] to be more,” says Ms Boyd in
response, “Franchises don’t really roll up to us,
that kind of figure [the 25%] would take a lot
of corporate activity. ”
Of course, the question for any HERC
president is whether Hertz Corp is committed
to owning it? Most recent speculation about a
HERC sell-off was sparked in late December
by a Financial Times story. Ms Boyd, speaking
before the latest bout of speculation, opts not to
add to the “constant chatter”.

Star performance
Australian access equipment rental company
Ace Tower recently completed work on the
soon-to-open Melbourne Star observation
wheel.
The work was carried out using the
company’s Barin AP 70/33 J2 aerial platform.
Mounted on a five-axle DAF truck chassis,
the AP70/33 J2 can reach a maximum height
of 70 m overhead and 33 m lateral outreach.
Melbourne’s giant observation wheel is
taking shape against the city’s skyline. The
120 m wheel, which has seven spokes,
representing the seven-pointed star of the
Australian flag, is due to open in early 2014.
OMMELIFT ON CALL
■ Towards the end of last
year foresters were tasked
with harvesting 20000 litres of
seed cones in just a fortnight,
from six acres of giant fir trees.
Almost 50 years old, the trees
only produce cones on the top
branches – and had grown to
between 35 m and 40 m high.
Tonny Bang of T/M Lift hired
in the Ommelift 3700 RBDJ
from Danish rental company
Setting up the Ommelift
Ringsted Liftudlejning to help
among the giant firs
them achieve their objectives.
“The last time we had trees
bearing seed cones in this area was five years ago,”

on loose shale
The crawler mounted platform has 37 m working
height. “Unfortunately the trees had grown so tall,
that the forest lifts we normally use for harvesting
could no longer reach the cones. Giant firs bear
cones only on the top whorls of the branches, so
being able to reach the top is essential. In this
situation, the 3700 RBDJ was our only option.”
UK-based Nationwide provided a production
team with two truck mounted platforms fitted
with lighting rigs to help capture a stunt filmed
during the night. It will be used in a new channel
launch by a major international satellite network
this year.
With the filming crew seeking perfect shots
of a motorbike as it completed ramp jumps over
a truck, Nationwide Platforms supplied a 37 m
Bronto Skylift truck mount, and a 35 m Oil and
Steel truck mount.
Both truck mounts’ baskets were fitted with
lighting rigs. The Bronto has a basket capacity of
700kg, while the Oil and Steel unit has a 400 kg
safe working load; ideal for securely attaching the
lighting.
In addition to a main light, a camera was also
fitted to the Bronto to help capture an overhead
shot as the motorbike became airborne. The
precision shooting of the stunt was made possible
by remote control ground operation which enabled
the Nationwide Platforms operator to position the
camera precisely.
■ Bridge inspectors in northern New South Wales,
Australia, needed to view the underside of a road
bridge spanning a river. They required an access
platform that was light enough to lower using a
mobile crane, yet also had the ability to drive across
– and operate on – uneven and boggy terrain. The

dimensions and 5050 kg weight meant it could
be safely lowered off the bridge using a 20 tonne
mobile crane.
