May 2014
Dear all,
Welcome back! It’s a pleasure for us to start yet
another school year with you. We anticipate with
great pleasure all the learning and fun that we’ll be
sharing this year. As you may already know, the
Liceo Cultural Británico is now firmly established

Martínez, Adrogué, Hurlingham, Lanús, Moreno,
Palomar Quilmes, and San Martín. A very special
welcome to all the students, teachers and staff from
all and each of these branches.
We firmly believe that learning a language is so
much about making the most of opportunities to
use it in class as through a number of out of class
activities. The Liceo Cultural Británico fosters this
by implementing a variety of projects that cater for
different interests.
For starters, the LCB News, this magazine that
includes work submitted by students from all
branches. You are all invited to send your ideas,
drawings, crosswords, interviews, stories or
comments. As for further speaking opportunities,
you can also join our Free Conversation lessons,
which run from May to November. Another invaluable
tool which you are all invited to enjoy is “The Typical
Mistake”, our weekly radio show on FM Palermo
94.7, which is on the air every Monday from 3:00 to
4:00 pm. Of course, you are welcome to access the

program on line through the link in our educational
platform. And, last but definitely not least, the LCB
invites you all to take part in a number of field trips
and outings that you will not want to miss!
Since learning a language is not only hard work
but also fun, we have recently started a blog
on
entertainment:
www.lcbentertainment.
wordpress.com Do visit it: you’ll find it amusing
and you will improve your English by the way! And
if you want to learn even more we also offer you this
blog www.lcblearning.wordpress.com, where you
will find activities to learn even more from the texts
published. Last but not least, remember to access
our virtual classroom at www.liceobritanico.com;
there you will find plenty of opportunities to revise
what you have learnt in class or to catch up with your
lessons if you have missed.
Finally, we would like to thank our teacher-editors
for willingly co-ordinating this project. We encourage
you all to go on sharing with us your ideas, drawings,
crosswords, lyrics, interviews, and what not, so that
you can show your family and friends how much you
have learned so far.
We wish you all a rewarding academic year plenty of
joyful learning and personal growth.

A crazy Halloween story
Haunted house 2
In 20th century London, the famous detective Sherlock
Holmes and Watson, his assistant, were visited by a famous
artist in those times: Jack Jackson. He wanted Holmes and
Watson to take part in the investigation of the murder of a
scientist named Marco Polo. They all went to the scientist’s
house. When they got there, they met the rest of the team
and they all spent the night in the house together.
In the middle of the night they heard noises coming
from the kitchen, Holmes and Watson went there and…
saw the ghost of Jack Sparrow! They decided to call the
Ghostbusters and then the ghost died.
Once the ghost died, they went to Holmes’s house and had
a party there. It was there that Holmes understood what
had happened to the ghost they had investigated and the
house. He wrote in his journal: “At last we found out that the
house was haunted.”
Matias Martínez & Leonel Bazán
One night John and his friends were looking for candles
when they saw a really strange house. It looked old and
abandoned.
They were afraid, but the boys still wanted an adventure
so they walked in. Suddenly, the door closed behind them.
Now they were really scared but as they could do nothing
about the door they moved on.
They opened another door and saw a shadow. Both John
and his friend held their breath: they couldn’t believe what
they were seeing! They wished they had never visited the
house.
They started screaming and just then a specter’s voice was
heard. Immediately after that, three ghosts caught them
and pushed them out of the house.
Soon after this they found out that the house was haunted.
John asked his friend if he would like to go into the house
again...
(to be continued…)
We don’t know if John is dead or alive now.
Haunted House
A group of school children went to the Hollow House for
Halloween. They had heard about the legend of the White
Lady and wanted to investigate. When they left the house
some time after, they were terrified. They told us at school
that as soon as they walked into the house they had seen a
pile of toys on the floor. Sally, Peter’s sister, said that she
had taken a look around the house and had seen a woman in
the kitchen. As soon as she told the rest and they all went to
take a look, she had disappeared and nobody saw anything.
When they left the kitchen, they realized that they had lost
Nancy, one of the girls. They searched everywhere in the
house but she was not there.
All of a sudden, Nancy screamed and they all went to look
for her. When they found her, they saw the White Lady
struggling with Nancy: she was grabbing Nancy by the
neck!
They finally managed to release her and they all ran out of
the room, out of the house and away from it.
Soon after that they found out that the White Lady was
actually called Cindy Hollow and that she had discovered
that her husband cheated on her. She had killed her
daughter and then she had killed herself because of the
enormous guilt she felt.
This is why when this lady sees a young girl, she thinks it is
actually her young daughter seeking for refuge.

Spooky!
At last we found out that the house was haunted. We felt
really scared right there and then because we realized
something.
As soon as we were in front of the house, the door opened
by itself. We couldn’t believe it! And then, once we were
inside, it closed automatically behind us!
Inside the house there were spider webs, black walls, tables
and chairs and all the lights were off.
Then we started the search for the girl who was crying and,
when we found her, she was already dead. We decided to
hide but the killer found us and we
started to run in order to go out of
the house.
Unfortunately, all the doors were
closed, so we had to climb some very
tall windows and this way we could
escape.

Revenge
A long time ago in a cold and dark Tuesday night a
young lady called Lillian had gone to her boyfriend’s
house to visit him for their anniversary.
She entered the house and she thought she had
heard a girl’s voice in his boyfriend’s room. She
opened the door slightly and saw her friend Sammy
kissing her boyfriend!
Lillian ran away of the house while her tears were
falling down. She was so angry with both that she
didn’t notice a car passing while she was crossing
the street.
Everything happened so fast...The car hit the girl so
hard that it took her life away.
From that fact Lillian’s spirit appeared in front of
Sammy every Tuesday night and did terrible things,
for example:
She cut Sam’s arms while she was sleeping and
when she woke up, she looked at her cuts and she
cried.
Lillian has tormented her for seven years. Every
Tuesday she shouted to her:
-STOP BOTHERING ME AND GO AWAY!!!
Lillian laughed and she came back again and again.
One day Sam went crazy and she committed
suicide.
The Police found her body with a piece of paper
next to her which was written with her blood:
“NOW YOU WON’T TORMENT ME ANYMORE,
WE’RE TOGETHER.”
A long time ago in a cold night, one man called
Carlos went to a party with a friend which was
in a bar in Canada. It was almost 12 P.M when a
beautiful girl called Monica came into the bar and
sat down alone in the table. When carlos saw her
alone, he invited her to dance and after that they
drank a beer. Monica was very cold and carlos gave
her his jacket. When the girl was leaving, Carlos
offered to take her in his motorcycle. When they
arrived at her house, she thanked him.
Next day, Carlos went to Monica’s house to get his
jacket back. He knocked on the door and one mum
opened the door, he asked her if she was Monica’s
mum and she told him that she had died 5 years
ago, he couldn´t believe it and the mum told him
to go to the cemetery to see her tomb. To Carlos’
horror his jacket was over that tomb. Carlos was
very scared and he went to talk with his friend.
After that, Carlos didn´t speak with strangers
anymore.

This is a short story about a girl who started a job.
She was really stressed and she couldn’t sleep
well. One night, six months after she started her
job, a sound woke her up. But she couldn’t move
her arms , legs or any part of the body. A shadow
passed in front of her, she tried to scream , but she
couldn’t. She felt how something or someone sat
next to her and started whispering words on her
ear, she fell asleep again and woke up screaming
when the alarm clock went off . Luckily, that never
happened to her again.
This is called sleeping paralysis , it happens when
your daily routine is very stressful , or you can’t
sleep well . The things and sounds you hear aren’t
real they’re just hallucinations.

A real horror story
In Texas, The United States, there was an old and
scary house which was in the middle of the forest.
Two men were living in that house. They were
hunters but not animal hunters, they were into
human hunting. The names of the hunters were
Enzo and Sebas. Enzo was eighteen . He was strong
and clever. Enzo was taller than Sebas. Sebas was
twenty-one years old. He was brave and ugly. Sebas
was better than Enzo. They hunted in the forest, in
the mountains and in lakes.
One day, a family was camping near the forest. The
family was composed of one mother, one father
and one girl. The parents were in love with each
other and the girl was studying Math. They were on
holiday.
Suddenly, Enzo looked at the family camping
and started to run to Sebas. When the two men
were preparing their arms, the family was having
breakfast.
After that, when they arrived, they were waiting
to attack. They killed all of them. Finally, after
committing the crime, they cooked the pieces of
It was a cloudy night, Drake and Josh were watching
a football match of Manchester United when the
lights turned off. As there weren’t lights, they
decided to go for a walk. While Drake and Josh were
walking they talked about their tests, the football
match, TV programmes, artists and all you can
imagine.
To their horror, they didn´t see that a man was
pursuing them. They ran and ran but they couldn´t
escape, the man who was a thief caught them.
After that, the man took them to an old factory
and he tried to kill them. They started shouting but
nobody heard them but then someone saw what
was happening and the person called the police.
10 minutes later, the police went to the factory but
it was very late. The men were dead but the police
could catch the criminal near Drake’s and Josh’s
house who were already dead.

A long long time ago in a far far town there were
two friends. Their names were Sam and Carol. They
weren’t normal people. He was a wolf and she was
a “chupacabras” they were lucky because there
was a farm close to their house.
They went out only at the night because the
sun destroyed them. For the farmers that was
a nightmare because if they didn’t say hello or
goodbye to them , they would appear at night an
eat all their children and after their wives

Can you see me in the darkness?
A devilish kidnapping
When I was an innocent child, I don’t know why but
looking myself in the window scared me, it always
made me feel uncomfortable.
I think everybody has something that makes them
feel uncomfortable.
I returned from school and then I had lunch and
watched TV, I was alone, of course, because my
parents worked every day. I went to the bathroom
to wash my teeth when I saw a woman in the
mirror. Her skin was as white as a dead body. Her
hair was dark and she had no eyes! She started
to push the window. I broke the window first and
she disappeared and then the lights turned off
automatically. I couldn’t see anything! I heard
a sound from the kitchen. It was so dark that I
decided to stay in the bathroom but the woman
was behind me and she said “give me your eyes” I
was shocked! Suddenly, her hand tried to remove
my eyes. That was when I started to run. I went
to the kitchen and I saw something that changed
me, there was my dog flayer on the floor. I vomited
and I started to cry. I didn’t know what to do but
instantly the woman appeared and she tried to take
off the eyes of my poor dog, I said crying “DON´T”
but she looked at me and she said “you will not use
your eyes where you go.” I took something from the
floor and I threw it at her but it didn’t work so I ran
to my bedroom and I closed the door.
I feel her presence, I don’t know why but she can’t
enter my bedroom. At the moment she is stronger,
she is pushing the door now.
Do you believe in ghosts?
How do you know there is nobody watching you
when you go to bed?
She is finally is here.
She is waiting for me.
There is no escape.
She will tell me your name and she will find you.
It was a dark night, Nicole had come from the
house of her best friend Alisson. There was a party
there so she was tired. She took a short shower and
went to bed.
A very strange dream took her by surprise. On
this occasion, a demon was in a dark castle. She
climbed up just out of curiosity.
She knocked on the door and it opened itself.
Slowly, she entered the lobby. As she watched the
place, the door closed tightly behind her. She was
scared to death, however, that wasn’t true, was it?
She went upstairs to her old, dirty and dark room.
Nothing happened, so she went to another one.
She entered the next one and a shadow seemed
to move. She came back trembling. Was she still
dreaming? That’s what we wonder! It seemed that
she wasn’t.
The shadow jumped from the closet. The demon
was real.
— You are unconscious. This is not a dream — the
soul was clarifying all kinds of doubts to the girl.
— W-who are you? —She asked, with a clipped
voice.
— The devil of your nightmares, the beast that
haunts you.
The demon laughed at Nicole as she tried to
escape. It did not work. The demon kidnapped her
or so somebody said.
I never heard about that but the neighbours heard
Nicole’s screams coming from a castle.

It was Saturday night when I arrived home. My
parents were not there because they went to a
magic show. I was playing mortal kombat when
suddenly the moon turned red. Quickly, I found out
some information about the “red moon.” It appears
every 500 years, and the legend says that the moon
chooses one person called the “ chosen. “
I was sleeping when a mysterious force caught me
and the color of my eyes became purple. I started
to feel pain my skin became red and horns started
to come out it was horrible! I didn’t become a hero ,
oh no, nothing like that, ... I became a devil .
Unconsciously, I killed all my family and my friends
from the Liceo! The first of them was obviously

A holiday is actually a “holy” day. It is thus a day when we do not work because
we deem it special, sacred, holy. Knowing what the word really is, knowing the “secret
identity” of the word, helps us use it correctly. If we know that a holiday is in fact a holy day,
then we can understand why we go “on” holiday, and not “in” or “at” holiday, for the word
“day” takes the preposition “on”, as when we say “on Sunday” or “on 30th February”- an
imaginary day, by the way.
So the Easter holiday is somewhat doubly holy because it is a religious holiday. It
is an extra holy holiday. And yet, the name in English has a seemingly un-religious air to it.
You see, Eostre-the word where “Easter” comes from- was a goddess of the heathen (non
believing) Anglo-Saxons. She was the goddess of fertility for them and they had festivals
in her honour precisely in the month of April. So, while the Spanish give the holiday the
name “Pascua”, related to the “paso” of Christ from mortality to immortality with his
resurrection; the English stick to their own traditions before they were Christianised and
remain closer to their own culture than that of the Christians.
So, after all, Easter is a holiday that is etymologically as holy as, say, the first
of May. Unveiling the secularity of the word allows us to discover how rooted the AngloSaxons were to their own cultural practices. This feeling of sticking to what is yours might
as well be something to ponder on as regards our own cultural heritage, our own patterns
as Argentinians, and the value of what it is to belong to our beautiful nation.

How I trained my husband…Did I train him?
Since I was a girl TV movies and magazines have shown us an easy way to
make marriages work. They have inspired us (women) to get brave, fair,
wise, funny and why not romantic husbands.
But from our very first date to our daily domestic life you realize that “the
ideal man” is only in your mind, and that the bone and flesh specimen by
your side, isn’t the same as you had dreamt of.
I’ve been living with my husband since 1998 and previously we had had a
“girlfriend –boyfriend” relationship for ten years, so we’ve been together
for more than 25 years. I can’t say: “I didn’t know him”!
I’ve discovered good things and bad things, strangely enough, those good
things turned into a nightmare:
I used to love the fact that he respected and chose to spend time with the
whole family …but not all the time…and his mother included.
I used to enjoy it when he helped me with the housework but now he has
become an obsessive compulsive cleaner!
I really love his sufficient economic solvency…but he really is a workaholic.
Sooner or later the prince becomes a frog, and the beautiful princess is in
fact a witch…
To overcome our problems we’ve had fluent dialogues, although they
aren’t always helpful, and sometimes we can argue, but we try to listen to
each other and solve our problems.
My husband has conquered not only half of my wardrobe, my bed, my
house… but he has also won my heart.
We are convinced that we don’t need to train the other.
Although prince charming can lose his charm with the passing of time, he
is still a prince. And whatever happens he will always be by my side.

Students from the Flores CAE course on Saturdays read the story “Usher II” by Ray Bradbury.
It is a text on a futuristic society where, pretty much like George Orwell’s 1984, life has become too
rational and controlled. They were asked to write an Information Sheet with the most salient event
in the story- the party thrown by its main character- and a Review of it. Here are their productions.
INFORMATION SHEET
“Party Time at Usher’s”
If you are interested in having a good time or you
want to live a unique experience, you should take this
invitation into account. The aim of this amazing party
is to celebrate the anniversary of The Great Fire, an
event that gave us peace and clarified our rational
minds.
What to do at the party
There will be many things to do in this interesting
event:
-Sharing opinions about effective ways of
controlling what kind of books people should read.
-Listening to talks by members of the Moral
Climates Department.
-Getting your invitations to attend the premiere
of the documentary “Once upon a time- no
more”(robots in charge of the Logical Department
will be distributing invitations, look for them in the
purple room!)
Facilities
Usher offers you the opportunity to:
• Enjoy the day swimming in its beautifully creepy
lake.
• Take a ride in our private rockets and visit the
planet next to ours.
• Appreciate our twilight landscape from our
exclusively panoramic point of view.
Don’t miss this great opportunity to take part in this
intergalactic meeting. The date is at seven o’clock.
Remember:
Should you lack personal-robot transportation, a
rocket cab will be waiting for you at the door of the
Moral Climates Department!

REVIEW
Usher II
If you are fond of sci
ence fiction stories,
you definitely must rea
d “Usher II”. It’s full
of imaginative scenes
, the plot is awesome
and the ending is un
expected- that is, if
you haven’t read the wh
ole of Poe’s stories
like poor Mr Garret, RIP
.
This story takes pla
ce in Mars in 2005
AD. It starts when Mr
Stendhal names his
new house Usher, ba
sed on the story by
Edgar Allan Poe. He
builds this house in
order to kill the huma
n beings in favour of
burning books and for
bidding any kind of
imaginative producti
ons on Earth. To fulfill
this purpose, he org
anises a party in his
house, where terrible
things happen to the
naïve guests that att
end it.
What is interesting ab
out the plot is that
Ray Bradbury uses Po
e’s stories to show
the reader how impo
rtant literature and
imagination really are
. Ray Bradbury is
a well-known write
r of science fiction
books, and this story
is a great example
of this genre. Althoug
h this is fiction, he
is able to write a delici
ous, interesting and
realistic story. He ma
kes us feel as if we
were in the situation
that he projects with
the language.
We highly recommend
reading this story,
for readers will fin
d it incredible and
remarkable. Besides
it is loaded with fun!

Sonnets have been one of the many manners in which poets have transmitted their views and
feelings on life. Here is a selection for all of you LCB News readers to enjoy!!!!
Ivana Gambarrutta
– William Wordsworth
Earth has not anything to show more fair:
Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
A sight so touching in its majesty:
This City now doth, like a garment, wear
The beauty of the morning; silent, bare,
Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie
Open unto the fields, and to the sky;
All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.
Never did sun more beautifully steep
In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;
Ne’er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!
The river glideth at his own sweet will:
Dear God! the very houses seem asleep;
And all that mighty heart is lying still!
– John Donne
DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not soe,
For, those, whom thou think’st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill mee.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,
And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
And better than thy stroake; why swell’st thou then?
One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.
– William Shakespeare
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed:
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
Nor shall death brag thou wander’st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st,
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee
– Boey Kim Cheng
You should be here, Nature has need of you.
She has been laid waste. Smothered by the smog,
the flowers are mute, and the birds are few
in a sky slowing like a dying clock.
All hopes of Proteus rising from the sea
have sunk; he is entombed in the waste
we dump. Triton’s notes struggle to be free,
his famous horns are choked, his eyes are dazed,
and Neptune lies helpless as beached as a whale,
while insatiate man moves in for the kill.
Poetry and piety have begun to fail,
As Nature’s mighty heart is lying still.
O see the widening in the sky,
God is labouring to utter his last cry.
