KEYPORT — It’s the little things in life, like having warm water to
shampoo your hair, that Debra Lopez never thought she would
marvel over.
But after six weeks without hot water or heat in her Keansburg
home, a wash and style was indeed a small wonder for Lopez.
She was among about 50 superstorm Sandy victims from
Keansburg, Keyport, Union Beach and Highlands who were treated
to a free haircut and styling service during the Haircuts for Exit 117
event held Monday at Monmouth County Vocational School’s
cosmetology program in Keyport. The afternoon of grooming was
sponsored by beauty supply company Emiliani Enterprises of
Union.
“This is great, warm water,” Lopez said as 17-year-old cosmetology
student Gabriella Condito washed Lopez’s hair. Condito acted as

“I was one of the lucky ones; I just lost my car,” she said, referring
to those whose homes had been flooded or demolished by the
superstorm.

She said heat and hot water at her home was finally restored on
Dec. 6.
For Myrna A. Velez, assistant principal of the vocational school, the
pampering was a way to give back to area communities.
About a dozen students from the vocational school assisted
licensed stylists for the event.

Agin of Red Bank said she contacted school
officials to pitch the idea, and she enlisted 26
hair stylists from the state to volunteer their
services for the event.
“This is the least I can do,” Caruso said.
Youssef Youssef of Keyport said he heard
about the event at the Keyport Senior
Center. This was the first time he’d ever
been to the school for a haircut, and he was
pleasantly surprised and happy with his cut
by Jasmine Astafa of Manalapan. Astafa is a stylist at Act III Hair
Stylists in that township.
Participating meant a lot to hair stylist Nadya Eastmond of East
Brunswick. Eastmond’s family still lives in the borough and had
extensive damage to the first floor of their home.
“I’m from Union Beach,” she said. “It is so sad.”
When Lopez walked into the school, she had long hair. But by the
time Caruso put the scissors down, Lopez had short hair with
longer angled sides.
“You can do this,” Caruso told Lopez as she was blow-drying her
hair, “You can do this on your own.”
The style was simple, yet a bit on the “edgy side,” said Casey
Bergen, 18, of Keyport, a student at the school. Bergen watched
Caruso as she used texturizing scissors to define the back of
Lopez’s haircut and style.
“I love it,” Lopez said. “It’s wonderful.”

All the attendees received an Emiliani tote bag with coffee, tea and
desserts provided by Blue Water Seafood in Red Bank, according
to Agin.
“We are hoping to have this again,” she said. “Everyone really had
a great time, and our residents seem to love their new haircuts.”
Velez agreed, citing the students learned a lot from the
professionals and were all pleased to “give back to the
communities.”
