The New Castle County School Employees Federal Credit Union staff had another great time preparing dinner for the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware on May
31st! This was our second time preparing dinner, which has been turned into a quarterly event. Not only has it been wonderful to give back to families of children in
our community but it has been an outstanding team building experience and a way for the staff to spend time together outside of work.

GOT AN APP F OR THAT?
Monefy: The App Fo r No- Fri lls Expens e Tracki ng
One of the wonderful truths about self-improvement is that the things we focus on tend to get better before we really even begin
changing anything. If you decide to start eating better and document your food choices, you'll make better general decisions when it
comes to food selection. If you want to cut back on coffee, start by counting each cup. If you plan to reduce your spending, the act of
writing down your purchases will actually encourage you to spend less.
With apps like Mint or Level Money, getting those initial benefits requires a long and perhaps complicated setup process. You need to
give the app access to all of your financial accounts, navigate dozens of menus and track down all your monthly bills. Only then will
your technology keep track of your spending for you. In instances like that, the first step to monitoring your personal finances is so
cumbersome, it becomes a barrier to just beginning the task. And that is unfortunate, because when starting a new challenge, nothing
helps build momentum like a few quick wins.
That's where Monefy comes in. Monefy is a new app recently released for iPhone and Android. Rather than automatically syncing with your accounts, it lets you tell it
how much money you have available to spend. That's it for setup. Once you've done that, you're ready to start tracking your spending. Rather than trying to
communicate with a dozen different financial institutions, Monefy keeps track of your transactions in a secure cloud storage system called Dropbox. Dropbox is noted
for its industry-leading encryption technology, and none of your account information is stored there.
In addition to the ease of setup, Monefy is pretty easy to run. Inside the app, you can create a new expenditure, add notes about it and categorize it. You can see your
remaining budget, edit old transactions and see a breakdown of your current spending. You can save and export your monthly transactions to any spreadsheet
program for long-term tracking, and you can even switch between currencies, which is the closest the app comes to having any "bells and whistles." Because the
app works on Dropbox, you can share the same budget across multiple devices, which helps families keep track of expenses together. Widgets also enable lock
screen access for quick recording.
Monefy comes with fairly general categories like food and housing. While they can be edited, it's somewhat of a cumbersome process in the free version of the app.
The free version also shows ads, although they're minimally intrusive. Features like recurring monthly expenses are also excluded in the free version.
Most negative experiences that have been reported thus far seem to be centered on stability issues. The developers are still working on an update system that works
seamlessly across platforms, so frequent data backup is a must. A few people seem to have problems with the user interface, too, but it seemed to work well enough
when we gave it our test drives.
If you're looking for a no-frills digital version of a checkbook register, Monefy will let you see how you're spending your money. It won't save money by itself, or
automatically deposit your savings in a brokerage account, but it will help keep you aware of your spending. And sometimes, that's really all you need.
