When she tells her parents Ella and Kallie that she is pregnant, they are shocked. But the real blow comes when she assures them she is still a virgin and that the Holy Spirit must be the father of her unborn child. Her father Kallie, really wants to believe his daughter, but as Sanna the kitchen maid puts it, “Faith does not always come easy.” Following the birth of the child, Krisjan, the town’s seven-year drought is broken and Sanna’s husband Abel is miraculously cured of tuberculosis. However, the church and town community remain sceptical of Marietjie's tale. She visits every possible church in the vicinity in search of a congregation that still believes in the possibility of miracles so that she can baptise her son. 'n Saak van Geloof, is a modern day re-telling of the Bible’s story of Jesus Christ. It shows a longing for a time when miracles were an everyday occurrence. It is a compelling, charming and inspiring story about a community that is confronted by the beliefs it holds dear only to find a bigger love and truer faith that brings them together. The film is the directorial feature debut of film and television producer Diony Kempen. This new Afrikaans film features singing star Robbie Wessels who had a major success with the comedy Poena Is Koning and the hit song Leeuloop, joining him is Lelia Etsebeth of Bakgat and Erfsondes fame together with Gospel singing star Riana Nel in her film debut alongside veteran broadcaster Niekie van den Berg and Isidingo star Michael Brunner. Set in the magical Karoo town of Prince Albert the story revolves around forgiveness, acceptance and the meaning of miracles. 4 Production Notes ‘n Saak van Geloof MAKING THE FILM Writer Jaco Botha who co-wrote the screenplay with Diony Kempen says the idea for the film came to him shortly after Christmas in 2009, when he wondered how a community would react if another virgin birth took place two thousand years after the birth of Jesus Christ. Like any fable or fairy tale the movie has an extravagant setup which lends itself to the dramatic, inspiring and at times comic examination of the human emotions and foibles involved in belief and prejudice. When the film was in production, rumours circulated that it was blasphemous; the script is certainly not. In fact the movie is an uplifting endorsement of the power of love. Dominee Briers and his NGK congregation in Prince Albert where fully supportive. The film is just a story, one that hopefully entertains and inspires. And as for the virgin birth? Well all is revealed in a touching finale that heals the community, proves that God’s first law is to ‘love thy neighbour’ and that a parent’s love remains whole no matter how many times it may be divided. The beautiful town of Prince Albert, located in an exquisite, magical corner of South Africa, turned out to be the perfect setting for this compassionate and touching cinematic fable, which shares with the town a sense of whimsical nostalgia for a time when miracles were the order of the day. The main set for the film was at the working farm of Vrisch Gewaagt with its striking Victorian farmhouse overlooking hectares of land and a massive sky. That is also where the actors were housed during the shoot, including Lelia Etsebeth of Erfsondes and the Bakgat flicks who plays Marietijie, composer and gospel singer Reana Nel in her screen debut as Ella, Cape Town-based actress Vanessa Lee who stars as Sanna, the film’s narrator, and folk-rock singing star Robbie Wessels who plays Kallie. Wessels says it was a great idea for the cast to stay together. “It created a great chemistry among all of us,” he says. The trained actor says he was charmed and touched by the script when he first read it. It also provided him with the opportunity to broaden his range as an actor and move away from his broadly comic roles. Gospel singer Riana Nel makes her movie debut in the film. “I never thought I’d be an actress. I know I can be a drama queen though,” she says. She believes in the new force of the Afrikaans movie industry. “The time is ripe for new stories and this movie is a wonderful life affirming piece,” she adds. Lelia Etsebeth was also charmed by the tale. She is full of praise for Kempen and says that after meeting with the director and producer Carmel Nayanah she could see that they shared a poetic vision. “Some might think the film is controversial, but in fact it’s magical and hugely positive, plus the Karoo becomes a character in itself in the movie, which just adds to the magic.” 5 Production Notes ‘n Saak van Geloof Robbie Wessels was a hit in the town, often breaking out into a rendition of his hit song Leeuloop for enthusiastic youngsters and other Poena fans who would come to take a peek at the movie makers. Legendary broadcaster Niekie van den Berg came in for two weekends to play the Dominee. With his newly shaved face the voluminous radio man crept up on unsuspecting residents with his booming voice. They loved him. The movie is the directorial debut of Diony Kempen who together with writer and director Jaco Botha crafted a simple but cinematic screenplay based on a very challenging premise. Kempen’s Welela Studios has been successful in television with two hit children’s programmes Whip The Chef and Treasure Hunt as well as the nation building weekly show Talk SA. After the company got involved with Jakhalsdans written By Deon Meyer and directed by Darrell James Roodt which Kempen coproduced, the filmmaker was determined to direct a feature and saw this mix of comic fable and magic realism as a perfect vehicle. Kempen’s talent for getting remarkable performances and his gentle style have produced a touching and inspiring movie that will charm audiences both young and old. 6 Production Notes ‘n Saak van Geloof BIOGRAPHIES: CAST ROBBIE WESSELS (Kallie) A Free State farm boy, Robbie Wessels completed high school in 1998 and went on to study drama at Technikon Pretoria, now known as Tshwane University of Technology. Shortly thereafter, he landed a part as Anton in the Radiosondergrense radio drama Blinkwater. Roles as Poena in the sitcom Gauteng-alêng-alêng, and Burger in Hart van Staal. Smaller roles in 7de Laan and Isidingo followed. In 2005 Wessels received a Huisgenoot Tempo award as favourite newcomer, and in 2006 his Leeuloop was voted most popular song. It’s the same Leeuloop which featured in a successful Vodacom ad campaign, and put him firmly on the road to fame in the South African music scene. In 2007 Robbie made his feature-film debut in the raucous comedy hit Poena is Koning which was a great success at the local box-office. For the past several years he has toured South Africa and attracted thousands of fans with his unique singing style. His CD, Halley se Komeet, achieved platinum status and headed the charts as the number one Afrikaans CD for several weeks. He released his third album “Afrika Sonsak” in July 2009 His music varies from light-hearted humour to deeply romantic, serious songs. It is this combination that has earned him a large audience from all walks of life. His performances are also characterised by the combination of raw energy in his lighter music and soulful renditions of more serious songs that he performs in his raspy voice. Wessels is modest and down to earth and enjoys socialising with his fans after shows, but he is actually a rather shy, quiet person who values time out with his family and friends. Singing and acting are his two great loves and he performs because he believes that he can make a difference in people’s lives by making forget about their own problems for a while. LELIA ETSEBETH (Marietjie) Better known for her part as Liezl in Bakgat!, Lelia Etsebeth completed an Mtech in Drama and Film Studies at the Tshwane University of Technology. Her television credits include Getroud met Rugby, Last say on Sunday, Erfsondes II; III and films such as Superhelde, Bakgat 2 and Bloedspoor. Her theatre credits include Mis, Dis ek, Anna for Aardklop, Anelle, Lost in Thought and Le’Regard sur Le’vie. As a voice over artist, Lelia was part of Susters en Skandes, a soap for Radio Sonder Grense. RIANA NEL (Ella) Growing up on a farm with no running water in the Kamas Highlands of Namibia, Riana Nel had lofty aspirations at a young age. With a strong faith and musical prowess well beyond her years, she knew even as a young girl that her God-given talents would take her far. For Riana, singing at local events and open invites led to a Crescendo Award in 2000 (the largest song writing competition in South Africa). This prize included a CD recording of her songs. In 2001, this self-titled album earned two Geraas Music Awards (Best Gospel Album & Best Newcomer). The 7 Production Notes ‘n Saak van Geloof purpose of these awards is to bring awareness to the thriving music industry and culture which many are unaware of. Riana made her American debut, when Word Records offered her EP, The Cure. This six-song project was released digitally to the United States and contains an amazing set of songs. Her vocal style and range can fluctuate from raw and boisterous rock to innocent and ethereal melodies. Riana is very adept at lyrical storytelling and her openness and honesty resembles Alanis Morrissette or Patty Griffin. The flamboyant guitar adds a further element of pure, in-your-face rock throughout the majority of songs. She says “To give without loving is easy” but “to love without giving” is impossible. That’s why she urges youngsters to give up self-centredness in life and “To always give your parent love, and you’ll get double that love back.” n Saak Van Geloof is Riana’s acting and feature film debut. NIEKIE VAN DEN BERG (Dominee Botha) Niekie van den Berg started his broadcasting career in 1982 on what was previously called the Afrikaans radio services. After some time spent in general broadcasting, he moved to television as director of an actuality programme, Verslag. He also worked as a presenter of the TV journal programme Uit en Tuis, along with Johlene du Plessis. In 1991 he returned to radio as presenter of Se Wie? one of Radio Sonder Grense’s most popular programmes. He then started working on Wat Is Die Prokureur? every Monday morning. As a cricket and rugby commentator, he has several tests under his belt. Niekie has won three Artes awards, as well as Academic prizes for radio. Niekie made his film debut in a guest role in the movie Jakhalsdans but ‘n Saak van Geloof sees him play his first major role in a feature film. Van den Berg is currently a Member of Parliament with the Democratic Alliance and is the Shadow Minister of Communications. VANESSA LEE (Sanna) After training with the Cafda Active Youth Drama Organisation and the Cape Fats Players Vanessa moved into an extensive career in township and corporate theatre. On the commercial stage she appeared in the roadshow Nyanisa/Let’s Talk Status, Sonne Skaamte at the Baxter, The Archbishop and Gangster and Save Our Flowers at Spier, Whatever Happened to Mavis and Invisibles I & II at the Grahamstown Festival and the Baxter theatre. On screen she appeared in Secret Agent, Dollars & White Pipes, A New Man for Mabel and Sexy Girls. Equally adept at comedy and drama, she evokes the sly humour and sympathetic pathos of the film’s narrator. 8 Production Notes ‘n Saak van Geloof ALFRED LODEWYK (Galant September) An astonishing discovery, Alfred is a Prince Albert local from North End. He rides around on the bicycle featured in the film doing odd jobs. A true eccentric, this was his first appearance in a film and the first time he has worked as an actor. There’s no doubt he will play play many more roles if offered the opportunity. MICHAEL BRUNNER (Pa) Michael Brunner is one of South Africa’s most loved stage, television and movie personalities. He is possibly best known for his long-running role as Skip Buller in the series Isidingo. The accomplished actor got into the business fairly late in life through amateur theatre, but his natural talent proved a hit with audiences. He has acted in many stage plays including musicals such as Hello Dolly. His extensive feature film credits include Jock of the Bushveld, Operation Delta Force 2: Mayday, Black Velvet Band, Merchant of Death, Never Say Die, The Power of One, The Sheltering Desert and numerous other local and international productions. Since retiring from fulltime acting Michael moved to Prince Albert and so was a natural choice to play the family patriarch in the movie. Michael also assisted greatly in casting locals to play bit-parts and character roles in ‘n Saak van Geloof. 9 Production Notes ‘n Saak van Geloof BIOGRAPHIES: CREW DIONY KEMPEN (Director, Co-writer) Television and film producer Diony Kempen makes his feature film directorial debut with ‘n Saak van Geloof, a dream he’s had since he was a kid growing up in the East of Johannesburg. Born in 1962, he remembers a South Africa without television. “My folks used to take me to the drive-in on Saturday nights, so from about three or four years old I was watching double features. Then on Saturday mornings we went into town and watched movies in the Coliseum and His Majesty’s with the little balconies and awesome stars on the ceiling. Since then I’ve always had a romantic fascination with the movies.” Kempen started work in television as an assistant floor manager. “My first job was to roll autocue and make sure the sets were clean. I really learned a lot during this time working on end-of-year extravaganza stuff for people like Ken Kirsten and Anne Williams. After a few months a began handing in proposals for shows but it took three years before someone took a chance on me producing a show.” After a sojourn in Australia, where he taught television and refreshed his training and enthusiasm in cinema at Film School, Kempen returned to South Africa filled with renewed passion and ambition and he set up television production company Welela. Within a short time the company had three successful television shows running at the same time on the national broadcaster. In 2007 Kempen made his first venture into features by producing and financing the ultra-low budget film Meisie directed by close friend and Oscar nominated director Darrell James Roodt. The film which Variety described as “The smallest feature made by prolific, Hollywood-experienced South African helmer Darrell James Roodt (Cry, the Beloved Country, Yesterday) is also one of his best. Minimalist tale of a remote-area schoolteacher befriending a gifted girl who wants to learn but isn’t allowed to delivers maximum emotional rewards for auds of all ages.” The film which opened and won the Jury Prize at the Durban International Film Festival went on to play to acclaim at festivals worldwide. Kempen’s next movie into feature films was co-producing the Afrikaans hit Jakhalsdans which broke box-office records for a local film. With ‘n Saak van Geloof Kempen has further emboldened his career movie into feature filmmaking. “When you’re on that shoot your focus is absolute and you’re just trying to make it work to get it all done. Then there’s a shift when you start to see the mechanics of the film begin to work. And then it’s totally thrilling and magical.” Kempen returned to the directorial chair in June with the action/adventure movie Snare which shot in the Waterberg Wilderness areas of the Northern Province. CARMEL NAYANAH (Producer) Carmel was born in Durban in 1985 and went to Westville Girl’s High School, which had an active drama department. Drama and acting became her passion and life ambition so she moved to 10 Production Notes ‘n Saak van Geloof Johannesburg and enrolled at the well-respected AFDA film school. “After film school,” she says, “the whole acting thing didn’t really work out but I realised that I really wanted to be part of the movie industry someway, somehow.” She worked in a CD store for a year figuring out how to get her foot in a suitable door and landed her first job in 2008, directing and producing promos for DStv. She met Diony Kempen in 2009 and became part of the Welela crew, producing and directing TV programmes for SABC 2. At some point early in 2010 Diony asked her if I’d like to produce his first film. “Don’t know why he asked me,” she says with a wry touch of humility, “as I had never produced any kind of film before but I said ‘Okay, cool’. Television, I found was a great training tool and prepared me well to tackle producing my first feature film.” JACO BOTHA (Original Story, Co-Writer) Jaco is a writer, director and producer, currently working for Aquavision TV Productions. He is a passionate storyteller who has written four books, two screenplays and also wrote, produced and directed oodles of hours of television in different genres varying from drama to comedy, documentary to reality and animation. Some of his favourite recent projects include: Casper Rasper Weer (co-writer – kykNET 2010); Talk SA (director – SABC2, 2009-2010); Jozi Zoo (writer – eTV, 2009-2010). He joined Aquavison’s team in July 2010 and has since worked on a variety of development projects and Caught In The Act (for National Geographic Channel). He holds a BA degree from the University of Stellenbosch, a BA (honours) and an MA degree in Creative Writing (cum laude) from the University of Cape Town. In 1997 he was awarded the MNet Bursary for Creative Writing. Jaco shoots from the hip, takes life in gulp-fulls, and will just not compromise where it comes to love and joy. He would rather be shot at than spend any time in a boardroom. He asserts he hasn't slept since September 1982. ANDREW WORSDALE – Associate Producer Worsdale was born in Johannesburg in 1962 and studied at St John’s and Eden College after which he studied Dramatic Art at the University of the Witwatersrand where he trained as an actor and filmmaker. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship at the age of 21 to study for his MFA in Film and TV Production at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). On his return to South Africa in 1986 he made his feature film directing debut with the cult hit movie Shot Down which won a Special Prize at the Mannheim Film Festival and was described in London’s Time Out magazine as follows: ‘a slice of South African cultural resistance, Shot Down is extraordinary, full of self-mocking humour, and - in bursts - exhilarating.’ He developed many other feature films, none of which have found finance, and produced two documentaries for BBC Television before moving back to South Africa, yet gain, where he was the Mail & Guardian film critic for many years before turning to freelance writing about cinema for a number of publications including Sight and Sound, Cahiers du Cinema and Screen International. 11 Production Notes ‘n Saak van Geloof ANDREW TOLMAY (Director of Photography) Andrew Tolmay was born in Brits in the North West in 1969. After finishing high school he went to study Film and Video Technology at Pretoria Technikon. After working in television for many years he shot his first feature in 2007, the critically acclaimed Meisie for director Darrell James Roodt which was produced by Diony Kempen. This was followed by the highly successful Afrikaans hit Jakhalsdans which Kempen coproduced with Anton Ernst from a screenplay by renowned novelist Deon Meyer, and which Roodt also helmed. Kempen and Tolmay have become collaborators in the film and TV production company Welela and ‘n Saak van Geloof is their first work together as partners on a feature as cinematographer and director. MARIA CONSTANTINIDES (Production Designer) Maria got into the movie business relatively late after a successful career as an interior designer. Her movie credits as an art department coordinator include Lost Boys: The Thirst, Africa United, Albert Schweitzer, Lost City Raiders, Flashbacks of a Fool and Goodbye Bafana. In addition, Maria has worked as an independent documentary filmmaker and has produced and directed numerous award-winning short films. ANDRE KEMPEN – Original Score Andre Kempen's name is synonymous with music and the piano in particular. He taught himself to play the piano at age 5, by listening to his elder sister.
