Dominant: Smoke deflectors of an unconventional design, such as those on 18 537,
contribute to the striking profile of steam locomotives. The poster page “Technology
in detail” gives a summary.
Dear
Club members,
At the International Toy Fair, Trix has had a splendid start into the 2015 exhibition season with a large number of new models, aided by the Club models
for this year, with their forward-looking new designs which are described in
detail elsewhere in this issue. We look at the special technical and functional
features of Minitrix loco 78 1001, produced as a series model for the first time,
while diversity of functions and running pleasure are under the spotlight in the
superb Pacific H0 loco 18 537. The pierced smoke deflectors on the class 18.5
prompted us to take a close look in the “Technology in detail” at Wagner and
Witte smoke deflectors. Finishing off our vehicle show, we have a comprehensive
list of the anniversary models for long-standing members.
Please inform us in good time of your new
address so we will know where we can reach
you. A simple application to the post office to
forward mail is unfortunately not enough.
Thanks for your cooperation!

Layout constructors have value for their money too. Minitrix is producing the
coal-mine Zeche Zollverein as a laser-cut model – a spectacular kit of this
UNESCO World Heritage site. We are particularly pleased to present an idea
built by a member of the Eisenbahnfreunde Kahlgrund: a diorama as a showcase
of the Norwegian fjord world.

Naturally we report on subjects from Club life, like the summer highlight of the
Club trip to Switzerland. This adventure tour will be powered by a Crocodile
– what else – up the Gotthard north ramp, and a special train will then climb
the Furka Pass with steam traction. In our Club series, we cover the reductions
you can claim on Club trips, from cooperation partners and on visiting exhibitions, and finally, we will be promoting a draw for tickets to the Ravensburger
Spieleland. Enjoy reading your Club News!

A model range well worth seeing
Trix scored heavily at the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg and at the
public exhibition ‘Faszination Modellbahn’ in Sinsheim with its new models
program for 2015 both with the trade and with model railroaders. There was
naturally plenty of praise for the 2015 Club models, and for the Minitrix
“Cisalpino” train set (item 11629, pictured at the bottom), the models celebrating 25 years since reunification like the two “Taurus” locos depicting
the Pan-European Picnic (16954, 16955) or the magnificent H0 steam type
G 5/5 freight loco (22029). At the Toy Fair and only for members of the trade
there was the Minitrix class 111 electric loco (item 16112) with experimental
color scheme as trade fair special, and in Nuremberg Trix also took the trade
visitors by surprise with the present of a two axle sliding wall box car lettered
to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the class E 03. The Henschel building
is depicted with its six-pointed star and the E 03 001 with its single row of
ventilator grilles. The motif is repeated on the lid of the box.
Exhibition loco: Supplied in a wooden
case, Minitrix electric loco 111 068-3 of
the DB with experimental color scheme
was available for retailers to order only
at the Toy Fair.
Give-away: At the Toy Fair, Trix presented trade visitors with a Minirix sliding
wall box car lettered to celebrate the
50th anniversary of the E 03.

E 93 07 is “Model
of the Year”
Two Trix locos gained first place in their
respective classes in the vote for “Model of
the Year” by the readers of the Eisenbahn
Magazin, published by the Alba Verlag. In
the electric locos, the readers voted first
place to the exclusive Club model for 2014,
E 93 07 (item 22870); in the steam locos, the
winner was the class 41 (item 22375) with the
standard 2’2’T34 box tender.

DETAIL
Engineer’s cab: The open
engineer’s cab has two
windows and roof vents
and it displays the road
number authentically.
Superstructure: The
slim boiler of 78 1001
is enhanced by sand
and steam dome
and various delicate,
separately-applied
part like the steam
whistle, regulator rod
and pipework. Color is
a uniform black, with a
suitable modest degree
of gloss.
Tender: The short two-axle
tender of type bay 2T 17
typical for the class 78.10
allows a clear view through
above the springs. Ladders
and headlight are applied
to the water tank while coal
sparkles in the bunker.
Front: On the authenticallymodeled buffer beam
are the two Reichsbahn
lanterns with warm white
LEDs, above them the Witte
smoke deflectors and below
them the leading bogie
truck and behind, the large
cylinders.
Connection: The short tender of
78 1001 is coupled by a drawbar.
➞ her well-proportioned design. The dimensions of the engineer’s
cab, slim boiler, cylinders and short type 2T 17 tender reflect the
looks of the original. The running gear has the coupled wheel
spacing typical for the huge P 8 family. After all, the class 78.10
was a conversion of the Prussian P 8, this one, of 38 2919.
The finish of the uniformly black or red components is semigloss, and the silver boiler bands are painted by the hand finishing department. Finally, the lettering is printed such as on the
engineer’s cab the wording “Deutsche Bundesbahn”, the road
number and the main type – the ‘Pt’ shows that 78 1001 is a passenger tank locomotive. Lettering is also applied to the decking
and to the tender, where weight and coal and water capacity can
be read. And of course the tender sides are resplendent with the
prototypical German State Railroad emblems.
8
Running gear: 78 1001 is driven by
three coupled axles, and the wheelsets have finely-worked bosses.
After final assembly, every class 78.10 loco undergoes a test
program devised by Quality Assurance which checks out the
numerous digital and sound functions (see Table, page 7). These
include typical sounds such as running, brakes squealing, airpump, coal shoveling and the grate being shaken up, and also
switching of headlights and station announcements. The 2015
Club model can of course also be controlled in analogue mode.

EXCLUSIVE 2015 CLUB MODELS IN H0: CLASS 18.5 WITH EXPRESS TRAIN PASSENGER CAR SET
Playing with the
Club model 18 537
The H0 Club model for 2015 for Insiders sparkles with
accurate details and functional variety. That enhances
the pleasure of playing with the class 18.5.
T
he conductor gives the ‘right-away’ in Augsburg for the express to Lindau, powered by
18 537. The engineer in the lighted cab opens
the valves and one hears the sound of steam
escaping. With a ‘pop’ on the whistle, the loco
starts to move, with its triple headlights lit.
On the right, the engineer has a good view
of the line ahead; on the fireman’s side, the view ahead is partially obstructed by the boiler feed pump. The sound of coal
being shoveled blends with the running sound of the fourcylinder machine – the fireman starts to sweat, there is a flickering
from the firebox and smoke pours from the stack. And that’s how
it is until the train arrives, brakes squealing, in Buchloe, the loco
sounds its whistle and blows off steam. Just like in real life:

Cavalcade: The total length of 18 537 and the Märklin express train
passenger car set is 141.5 cm (55-11/16") over buffers.

Model: The cars have detailed construction and are scale
length. The underbodies and trucks are specific to the
car types. The coaches have train destination signs. The
73400/73401, 7335, or 66672 (depending on the car) lighting

DC wheel sets: "Hechtwagen" and standard design corridor cars
each 4 x 700580. Bavarian design cars each 4 x 32376004.
Running pleasure: With all the operating and sound functions
on 18 537, typical operational sequences with a steam locomotive can
be played out on the layout. The baggage car behind the loco has a
kink in the edge of the roof; from here to the end of the car, the roof
was made of sheet metal – the rest was of canvas.
Exclusive passenger car set: To match 18 537 (item 22880) is the
Märklin set (42259) with DB cars of around 1958. Your retailer will be

can be actuated by the Mobile Station or the Central Station
such as injector, water and air-pump or shaking up the grate to
empty the ash-pan in the depot all add to the playing enjoyment.
10
Refinements of the passenger car set
While 18 537 stands in the station, it’s worth looking at the five
DB passenger cars attached, exclusively produced for members
of the Club. “Directly behind the tender is the baggage car”, says
Märklin documentarist Thomas Landwehr. “This ‘pike’ car still
has the cupola in the roof, from which the train conductor could
watch the train from his elevated seat. The car is in its 1958 condition; operating regulations changed then, and it was no longer
necessary to watch along the top of the train; on other types of
baggage car the cupola was removed, but they remained in place
on the ‘pike’ cars”. The car expert points out the Prussian-design
trucks and the unusual shape of the car: “For a uniform train

to the end of the car body”. The edge of the roof therefore has a
kink. From here to the end of the roof, the roof was covered with
metal panels, in the middle of the car over the compartments
of wooden panels, applied over iron half-hoops. For protection,
the roof was covered in impregnated canvas.
The other cars have their own tales to tell. “In the Bavarian type
B4üe the body shell had a timber framework and it was clad
with metal panels”, explains documentarist Thomas Landwehr
and points out the line of the side walls, interrupted by the entrance: “To prevent doors left open by accident hitting trains
on an adjacent track, the entrance itself was recessed”. In the
following “pike” car of type B4üwe finally, the trucks are worth
mentioning; they are an American design and are also known as
“swan-neck trucks on account of the shape of their side-frames”.
In the meantime, the engineer is clearing the condensed steam
from the cylinders by opening the cylinder taps and 18 537 is
ready to head for Lindau. After the ‘right away’ signal, the train
accelerates slowly out of the station.

Other than the standard locos, there were also classspecific designs of smoke deflectors, such as for the
DRG class 18.3 locos (item 22180) of era II, a former
Grand Ducal Baden State Railways class IV h.
The class 38.10-40 tender locomotive (item 22134) is
equipped with the small Wagner smoke deflectors.
The former Prussian P 8 was primarily used by the
German State Railroad on passenger trains.
The older version of the standard
express loco of 03 266
(item 22951) of era III also
has the typical large Wagner
smoke deflectors. They
stand on the decking, are
fixed to the boiler with
brackets and reach right
down to the buffer beam.
They got their name from
Richard Felix Paul Wagner,
boss of the steam and motor loco
design department in the State
Railroad Central Office in Berlin.
Small Wagner smoke deflectors grace the Club model for 2015: On the
express steam locomotive 18 537 (item 22880) the smoke deflectors are
pierced and sit on the decking which is gained by means of a ladder.
Smoke deflectors divert smoke and exhaust steam away from the cab windows - these
“ears” were a characteristic feature of the steam locomotive’s appearance. N
 aturally Trix H0
models are fitted with the correct design of smoke deflectors for the period they represent.

class 50.40 (item 22051) are like the standard ones,
but at second glance on the Club model 2011, there
are grab-irons to be seen on the lower edges.
You will find information on these models online under www.trix.de, information on Club models is
also in the Club area under club.trix.de
The loco constructor Borsig planned extended Witte smoke deflectors
for the largest-ever design of German steam loco, the class 53.0, which
however was never completed. The Trix model (item 22061) shows the
long-distance version of the machine, with a large condensing tender.
Engineer Friedrich Witte,
later Vice-President of the
Federal Railroad Central
Office, developed the
small “Witte” smoke
deflectors, seen on
45 010, the 2013 Club
model (item 22945).
Their advantages
over Wagner smoke
deflectors were that
they used less material and afforded the
engineer a better view of
the track ahead.
The world record-breaking loco 05 001 – pictured the Club model
2004 (item 22108) – was also fitted with smoke deflectors: It was most
important on the streamlined loco, which on May 11, 1936 reached a
top speed of 200.4 km/h (124-1/2 mph), that the engineer’s view was
not obstructed by smoke and exhaust steam.

LASER-CUT BUILDING KITS ON THE TRIX THEME “COAL AND ENERGY”

Laser-cut coal mine: The large industrial complex comprising three
building kits is a contribution to the Trix theme “Coal and Energy”.
Playable: In the Minitrix coal mine, the coal is carried away in freight
cars – an ideal place to load block trains.
W
here could a block train with bulk
freight or open freight cars be heading for on an N-gauge layout? Minitrix
gives the answer with a laser-cut model
of the Zeche Zollverein which covers
one square meter – 10-3/4 square feet.
For a long time now, the industrial
monument in Essen has been much more than just a symbol of
the Ruhr’s industrial culture and a popular excursion destination
attracting over 1.5 million visitors every year; as a UNESCO
World Cultural Heritage Site, the huge complex with its geometric Bauhaus architectural style enjoys international renown.
Coal was mined here from 1851 until closure in 1986.

tending the world of N-gauge even further with another laser-cut
building kit in colored card. The Zeche Zollverein shaft XII is
fully detailed and produced as it was in 1929/30 and consists
of three parts. First to be mentioned is naturally the conveyor
layout (item 66310); the conveyor frame and pulley wheels are
outstanding symbols of the mining culture. It includes the sorting layout (66311), in mining also ‘sorting belt hall’, where the
newly-mined coal was separated into different sizes. The third
part is the enormous coal-washery (66312), where the hard coal
was freed from waste stone, and the free-standing coal bunkers
round off the complex. Several tracks lead to the coal washery
for the coal trains in which the coal was transported away. For
each of the parts, Minitrix naturally provides comprehensive
assembly instructions for building the kit.
The building kits could well be the inspiration to visit the real
thing. Public attractions are group and themed guided tours and
the historical Zollverein trail through the preserved buildings,
the Ruhr Museum and the Portal of Industrial Culture; there
are also major concerts and open air events. Full information
on what you can experience in the Zollverein coal mine will be
found on the Internet under www.zollverein.de.

MODELL SÜD 2014: SPUR-N MEETING FOR EUROPEANS
Life by
the fjord
A
t Modell Süd 2014 Europe’s N railroaders again got together with their modules
and met; the organizer, the N-Club International, coordinated hundreds of modules with its usual skill. Bernhard Walter
from the Eisenbahnfreunde Kahlgrund
has made a special “showcase” to attract
our attention towards Norway: “The observer looks into a landscape as if looking outside through a window”. The diorama
shows, seen from the water, a rock face behind which the staging yard is concealed. Activity is concentrated on the station
of Stjørdal with a container terminal where the containers are
transshipped between rail, road trucks and ships. An ocean-going trawler and a sailing yacht are moored in the harbor.
“The showcase has a simple track plan with just three tracks”,
says Bernhard Walter. “But the turnouts are wired in isolating
pairs, so that crossing and overtaking can be demonstrated with
four trains”. The fjord scenery determines the loads carried by
his freight trains: containers and wood. For the buildings, kits
by Faller have been modified and suitable lettering has been
added. Walter’s original scale was H0, but for the diorama he
switched to N gauge, and found it most enjoyable: “Working
in N gauge was enormous fun”. A full report on the European
N-Scale Convention will follow in the Club News issue number
03/2015. Well moored: At the quayside the fish wholesaler is waiting with his
refrigerator car alongside the ocean-going trawler for the fresh fish.
Dramatic: A mighty waterfall cascades down the fjord wall, and an
arched bridge carries the tracks over the river mouth.

With the “Crocodile” special train on the Gotthard
and a steam special on the Furka Railway, the 2015
Club trip to Switzerland promises to be an exciting and relaxing rail experience.
T
wo legendary rail lines are on the agenda of the
Club trip from August 8 to August 13, 2015: We
head from Erstfeld over the Gotthard to Locarno
with the Crocodile Ce 6/8 14253 and from Realp
a special train makes full steam ahead over the
Furka Pass, past the Rhône glacier to Oberwald.
“There’s a window seat reserved for each Club member in both
trains”, Gregor Sutter from the Club partner organizing the trip,
Bahnreisen Sutter, tells us. “So there is ample room and time
to film, photograph and admire the scenery”. The trip will be
escorted by a member of the Märklin staff.
All overnight stops are in three-star hotels in Lucerne and
Morschach. After arrival in Lucerne on day 1, there is time for a
stroll round the city, followed by a welcoming evening meal. On
day 2 we visit the Swiss Transport Museum. In the transport museum, one of the most interesting in Europe, Club members have
a special introduction to the Gotthard railroad. A brief cruise on
the Vierwaldstättersee brings the group to Morschach, on both

the shores of the lake and on the Gotthard. Next morning we
head for the mountains, up the north ramp of the Gotthard to
Göschenen and from there with the narrow-gauge rack railway
through the Schöllenen Gorge to Andermatt and on to Realp.
Club members now climb from Realp up and over the Furka
Pass in a special steam train to Gletsch on the Rhône glacier
and on to Oberwald.
The following day is devoted to the myth of the Gotthard, the
gigantic gateway between north and south. From Morschach,
Club members travel in a post bus on the pass road up to the
Hospiz at 2,106 meters (6,910’), where in the Museum Sasso San
Gottardo a multi-visual exhibition on mobility, climate,
energy, water and gold will be shown. On the return,
in Wassen we can see two huge loops and other sections of the Gotthard line. Day 5 is the travel highlight
of the trip: The legendary Crocodile Ce 6/8 14253
hauls the Club’s special train from Erstfeld up the
steep Gott-hard north ramp, round the little church of
Wassen to Göschenen, and on through the Gotthard Tunnel
to Airolo and down through the circular tunnel by Rodio
and with a stunning view of the spectacular Biaschina Viaduct
to Bellinzona. A pause will be made in Locarno on the blue Lake
Maggiore, then the whistle will sound for the journey back to
Erstfeld. The hotel restaurant in Morschach will serve the farewell dinner before day 6 sees everyone on their way home after
breakfast.

CLUB BENEFITS, PART 2: COOPERATION PARTNERS, EXHIBITIONS, CLUB TRIPS
So I’m away then
When you pull your front door shut behind you, you should take
your Club card: This proof of membership will gain you reductions on Club trips, at cooperation partners and to exhibitions.
M
iniaturwunderland Hamburg, the Bajuwarium Straubing and Oktorail in Essen’s Gruga Park all have two things in
common: The three large layouts bring
gasps of amazement from model railroaders, and they are Club cooperation
partners – show your Club card, and get
a reduction on the entry fee. Layout builders seeking inspiration
and new ideas or those wanting to watch long trains running
past – extensive layouts have their own attraction, which also
applies to the Rabland Eisenbahnwelt in the South Tyrol, Miniworld Rotterdam or the Miniatur Erlebniswelt Dietenhofen in
N-gauge. Among the cooperation partners there are also many
railroad, technology and toy museums, and a number of railroad
preservation societies and adventure parks like Ravensburger
Spieleland and Bavaria Studios offer an entertaining excursion

destination for the entire family. Most of the major exhibitions
too allow a discount on the price of admission on production of
the Club card. Steam trips, museum visits and adventure parks
are all more fun when you are in a group. However, the ultimate
group experience is offered by the Club trips on which members
enjoy a reduction on the price of the entire package. Especially
popular are the Swiss tours; in 2015 in cooperation with Sutter

COMPETITION RAVENSBURGER SPIELELAND
Leisure fun near
Lake Constance
U
nforgettable moments experienced together by
the entire family in the Ravensburger Spieleland
(www.spieleland.de) leisure park near Lake
Constance. More than 70 attractions are to be
discovered in eight theme worlds, surrounded
by all the beauty of nature. New in 2015 is the
‘Mouse and Elephant World of Experience’,
covering 5,000 m² (53,800 ft²). Unique attractions with the mouse
and best friend the blue elephant await families there: a new 3-D
mouse cinema, balance and climbing courses with the elephant and
the mouse studio! Who dares cross the new Reka Alpine ravine?
Dare to negotiate the 37-meter (121’) long, freely-suspended rope
tunnel above the Alpine Rafting whirlpool!
The Club is now running a draw exclusively among members for
three family tickets, each for two adults and two children, to the
popular Spieleland. If you wish to try your luck in the draw, you
only have to give the right answer to one question:
In which issue of Club News was the Ravensburger Spieleland
first introduced as a Club cooperation partner?
Members can log into the Club area under club.trix.de and enter the answer to the competition question under the menu item
“Competition”. Closing date for entries is April 20, 2015. We will
notify the winners either by e-mail or by post. You can only enter
the competition online. Legal redress is excluded and there is no
cash alternative to the prizes offered.
Enormous fun: With the luck of the draw, you may win one of
three family tickets for the Ravensburger Spieleland.
Practical Club presents at exhibitions
Visiting exhibitions is for many an integral part of their hobby – to see new models,
admire other layouts and to chat with other model railroaders. As a rule, the enjoyment starts at the entrance: At most major exhibitions, like the IMA in Göppingen
and Cologne, Intermodellbau Dortmund, Modell Süd in Stuttgart, modell-hobby-spiel
in Leipzig or Suisse Toy in Bern, members obtain reductions on admission fees with
their Club card. If the Club team is present – as it is at Intermodellbau Dortmund
2015 – at the Trix/Märklin stand, it’s doubly worth looking in: there is often a little gift
to welcome Club members. A list of events and exhibition dates is found at
www.trix.de (under “Erlebnis/Veranstaltungen”).
The Club team welcomes members to many exhibitions with a
little gift. A sticky note block in 2011/2012 catalog design, folding
meter ruler, LED torch with carabiner, bottle opener or flexible
rule: The Club presents are always practical.
