Olly joined the Australian Postcard Society in 2009. His collecting interests were pre
1970's postcards of Semaphore and Largs Bay.
Sadly Olly passed away on the 12th of January after suffering from Cystic Fibrosis,
Type 1 Diabetes and Tuberculosis.
He was a great lover of music and poetry not only listening but the writing of as well.
He was a highly intelligent 15 year old with an enquiring mind, in the last 18 months
he spent many an hour with Phil at his shop talking about postcards, and any other
topic that was of interest, it just goes to show that with the right mentor any one of
any age can be an enthusiastic collector.
Olly will be sadly missed by those of the Postcard Club.

ROMAN SCHERER - 1923 - 2010
It is with much sadness and regret that I must
report the sudden passing of Roman Scherer at
Ararat on September 18, 2010
Roman was a cultured and refined man of the
world.
He had travelled widely and spoke a number of
languages.
He started ASA Auctions in Rundle Mall and
being a man of vision in respect to philately,
wanted to establish a trading area for dealers
and an auction house on the same premises.
Very novel for Adelaide at the time.
I first came to know him as a young man when he was conducting
philatelic trading in Adelaide. He took me under his wing and mentored
me in my philatelic endeavours. For this I will be ever grateful.
I remember seeing material in one of Roman’s auctions that I was keen
to obtain and made mention of the fact to him, stating that I would not be
able to pay for my lots, if successful, straight after the auction as was the
requirement at the time. He told me to bid anyway and pay when I had
the appropriate funds.
Through Roman I obtained some exotic material for my collection: he
had a knack of sourcing material for people - remember this was well
before the internet days.
We lost touch for a time and then on one of my frequent trips to Melbourne after stopping at Ararat for a coffee and a break: who should we
bump into but Roman and his wife Herta. After that I would drop in and
see them on future trips. Roman used to dig up material for me and hold
until I came to visit. (Herta pre-deceased Roman).
He will be sadly missed by the philatelic fraternity and those with whom
he had dealing and me in particular.
Rest in Peace Roman
John Bodnar
