The Hérisson steephead

are classified ‘Natural Sites’.
Anémones pulsatiles
What is the classification ‘Natural
Site’ ?
The ‘Sites naturels classés’ (‘Classified natural sites’) also known
as ‘Sites Classés’ are a French official label that designate a variety
of types of surroundings: scenery,
art, history, science, legend, or
exceptionally picturesque sites,
that have been subjected to an
authorisation in order to protect
and/or improve the site in
question.
The most recent ‘Classified natural
sites’ is the ‘Vallée du Hérisson’,
and it becomes obvious when
you visit the valley as it will enable
the preservation of the biodiversity; it is classified ‘NATURA
2000’ for the most part, five areas
of flora and fauna ecological
interest have been marked out.
Further South, in the ‘Petite Montagne’, there is a Mediterranean
influence on the climate and the
flora is more vivacious. The richness and variety of the ecosystem
has led to this part of the country
being put-forward as one of the
biggest ‘NATURA 2000’ sites in
France.
Wildlife
BIRDS: Once you set-off on an
excursion, you will certainly come
across some of the wildlife that
is quite abundant in places: the
first, and easiest to see, are the
birds of prey. Buzzards, Red Kites,
and Kestrels are above you all
the time, their silhouette and
flight pattern is easily identifiable.
Short-toed eagles are quite common, as are a number of other
birds of prey. Nocturnal birds of
prey are also easy to locate by
their calls, eagle-owls (the biggest
nocturnal bird of prey), snowy
owls, barn owls and others all
come out at night, and nightwalks are organised by the CPIE
(see below). Also audible, more
than visible, the woodpecker
and the cuckoo.
MAMMALS: Obviously a bit more
difficult to observe, but there is
a good chance of spotting roedeer, chamois, badgers, foxes,
squirrels, pine-martins, and the
occasional otter in lower lands,
bats (in the caves or at night),
wildcats are very shy, and even
more shy, Europe’s only big-cat,
the lynx.
FISH: The waterways are abundant
with fish, the pike being one of
the largest; waders, cranes, and
red kites are often on the lookout
above the lakes.
Espace botanique (B8)

Saut de
La Forge
Do you feel like a breath of fresh air ?
From its source in a steephead valley, surrounded by cliffs,
the ‘Rivière du Hérisson’ starts at 805 metres altitude
and spills out over 7 waterfalls before flowing into the ‘Lac de Val’
and the ‘Lac de Chambly’. A footpath (7.5 km roundtrip)
allows you to visit the whole site, waterfalls, rivers, lakes, caves,
water sources gushing out of the rock, all in quiet and natural
surroundings; don’t miss the ‘Cascade de l’Éventail’,
or the ‘Saut Girard’ and ‘Grand Saut’, both with rock erosion
forming a large cavity behind the waterfall.
There are various ruins and traces of the former trades that
relied on the hydraulic power of the water for mills, whether
for blacksmiths, flour mills or woodworking since the 12th century.

Cascade de l’Éventail
‘Little Scotland’
or the 7 lakes ‘classified natural site’
‘Little Scotland’, located on the ‘Frasnois’
and ‘Bonlieu’ plateau, is a smallish area with 7 lakes,
and it acquired its name through ‘Charles Nodier’,
a writer from Besançon,
who was seduced by the wild and natural look
of the plateau, and it reminded him of ‘Loch Maree’
in the North West Highlands of Scotland.
The lakes are: Petit Maclu, Grand Maclu,
Ilay, Narlay, Vernois, Fioget, and Bonlieu.
Each lake has its own identity and character.
LAC DE BONLIEU (C8)
The ‘Lac de Bonlieu’ is one of the
most beautiful lakes in Jura, locked
between woods and a high rocky
cliff. The viewpoint (belvédère)
‘La Ronde’ offers a striking view.
In 1170 AD, Thibert de Montmorot
founded the ‘Chartreuse Notre
Dame de Bonlieu’ (Carthusian Monastery) on the edge of the lake
as it was an ideal place to seek
serenity and calm.
LACS DES MACLU (B9)
The Maclu lakes
Both lakes are connected, and
the shores have a particularly rich
ecosystem. There is a path around
the lakes that will almost get your
feet wet.

the ‘Domaine de Chalain‘. Parking fees apply in July and
August.
Lac de Vouglans: Surchauffant beach (Pont de la
Pyle) (E5), La Mercantine
(F5) and Bellecin (E5).
Lac de Coiselet: Beach
in Chancia (H5), swimming authorised but not
supervised.
8
LAC DU VAL (B7)
LAC DE VOUGLANS
(C5 to G5)
The 3rd largest artificial lake in
France offers a variety of scenery
over its 35 km length.
LAC DE CHALAIN (A7)
At the lower end of the ‘Cascades
du Hérisson’, the ‘Lac de Val’ is
the first resting point for the water
once it has completed its agitated
course. WARNING: whirlpools
can occur which make it dangerous for swimming. the ‘Belvédère
(Viewpoint) de la Dame Blanche’
offers a good overview.
This lake was formed by the collapse of a big part of the rock
surroundings, and it is Jura’s deepest natural lake: 48 m deep.
A glacier lake, it is the biggest
natural lake in Jura. Beneath the
waters lies an exceptional Neolithic heritage, the remains of a
stilts village dating 3000 BC.
Nowadays, the ‘Lac de Chalain’
is a very well established holiday
resort. Several viewpoints (belvédère) offer a wonderful walk
and opportunity for landscape
photography (see page 11)
LAC DU FIOGET (A9)
CLAIRVAUX LES LACS (C6)
A lovely lake with woodland on
one side and rolling hills on the
other; it is a privately owned
lake.
The little lake, privately owned,
is appropriately named as its surface is only 17.10 ha, compared
to the big lake with 56.5 ha. The
big lake revealed the remains of
a pilotis lakeside village which
has its own exhibit in the summer
season at the village hall. The
‘Lac de Clairvaux’ is also a wellestablished holiday resort (see
page 19).
A small lake in the vicinity of the
village with the same name; the
difference with this lake is that it
is slowly diminishing in surface,
1.7 ha in 1986 compared to 0.87
ha in 1993, due to the fact that it
is slowly becoming part of the
environment, today a lake, soon
marshland, and eventually a forest.
LAC DE CHAMBLY (B7)
LAC DE VIREMONT (G4)
A very nice lake, 35 ha, with unspoilt surroundings, reed and
marsh shores, privately owned.
A small lake, lost in the wilderness
offering a rich variety of flora and
fauna (NATURA 2000 site).
On a clear day the turquoise
blue waters contrast beautifully
with the rocky background. There
was a monastery on the lakeshore
circa 1000 AD.
LAC DE NARLAY (B9)
LAC DU VERNOIS (B8)
Surrounded by forest, the lake
comes into sight all of a sudden,
as if appearing out of nowhere.
The lake doesn’t have any paths
or accesses, but it can be admired to take photos, and in the
summer you can see the cattle
using it as a watering place.
Aerial view of the 4 lakes
LAC DE COISELET (I4)
Spectacular scenery for the ‘Lac
de Coiselet’ which was flooded
in 1970 after the ‘Lac de Vouglans’.
The ‘Bienne’ and ‘Ain’ rivers flow
into it, and it is surrounded by
rocky cliffs.
LAC DE CONFLANS(J3)
Between the ‘Ain’ and ‘Valouse’
rivers and on the Jura-Ain border,
its waters are rich with pike,
pikeperch and zander.

ACTIVITIES
From 4000 BC to 1000 BC,
the first settlers and farmers
built their villages on stilts
on the banks of ‘Lac de
Chalain’ and ‘Lac de Clairvaux’. The freshwater conserved the remains in good
condition, but the archaeological findings and the area
is not open to the public.
In July and August there is
an exhibit at the Clairvauxles-Lacs village hall.

JURA SPECIALITIES
LE VIGNOBLE – VINEYARDS
In the 19th century, prior to the phylloxera plague, the Jura
vines had 40 varieties over 20,000 hectares. The current production covers 1850 ha with 4 A.O.C geographical areas:
Arbois, Côtes du Jura, L’Étoile, and Château Chalon, and
2 A.O.C wines: Macvin and Crémant du Jura.
5 varieties of grape are used: Chardonnay, Savagnin (white
wines), Poulsard or Plousard, Trousseau, and Pinot noir (red
wines).
CHEESE

culture. Comté, Morbier, and Bleu de Gex cheese all have
tastes that reflect the seasons, and the differences in texture.
They are to be tasted and enjoyed throughout the year. Cheese
dairies at: Aromas, Chisséria, Doucier, Largillay, Orgelet, Saffloz,
St Julien, and St Maurice Crillat.

Formerly the ‘Comté du Sud’
bailiwick capital, Orgelet is a village
with an interesting history.
From whichever direction you look,
the old part of town, on a hill,
at the base of the ‘Mont Orgier’,
is outstanding!
The fortified ‘Église de Notre-Dame
de l’Assomption’ with its 17th century
organ is worth a detour,
the oak ‘chasuble‘ vestry
and the mediaeval tiling inside
the church are all well preserved.
Orgelet is the home town
to a few famous locals: Cadet Roussel,
and Léon Bel the founder of the world
famous ‘Vache qui rit’ soft cheese.

Cirque de la Pierre Énon
(‘Circus‘ rock formation) (G4)
Between the hamlets of Vogna and Néglia there is a
circus rock formation with
the ‘Pierre d’Énon’, which,
according to local folklore,
is a place of Celtic worship.
Arinthod has a charged history;
the fortifications date
from the 13th century, and Arinthod
remains a charming mediaeval
village, through the arcades
and the church, which oversees
the square, and dating
from the 12th to the 16th century.
The old town centre is exceptional
to see, the ‘Château de Rotalier’,
the castle moat dated 13th century
and since disappeared, the fountain,
and the ‘Château de Vogna’.
The church in Arinthod
is listed ‘Historic Monument’.

Some of the mysteries
CHÂTEAU ET PIC D’OLIFERNE
(H4)
Sites of outstanding
beauty
Built in the 13th century, standing
at 807m altitude on the Pic d’Oliferne, it was the ideal lookout
point and very difficult to overthrow. It was eventually conquered and destroyed. A heritage
path surrounds the ruins, the
castle house, and the well. A
magnificent viewpoint over the
area conjuring-up forgotten battles and legends. 9 km
GROTTE DE LA BALME
D’EPY (H1)
‘Balme’ is the name given to a
cave accessible on the side of a
cliff and that also has a water
source. A large part of the cave
(1700m) is underwater. A Virgin
Mary and a little Altar at the entrance to the cave give it a
‘Lourdes’ look.
ABBAYE DE GIGNY
EGLISE DE SAINT HYMETIERE (H3)
The Gigny Abbey was founded
in the 9 th century by Abbot
Bernon, and was the basis for
founding the Cluny Abbey, the
biggest Christian place of worship
in the world in the 16th century;
it was the centre of the religious
changes in the Middle-Ages. The
church is a very good example
of Romanesque architecture and
it was the model used to build
the church in Cluny.
Church and heritage circuit
45 minutes – Departure from the
front of the church.
Built in the 11th century it is a
jewel of Mediterranean architecture. The dome, with its
octagonal belfry (Comtois bell
tower) draws the attention of
viewers who like unique architecture. Classified as ‘historic monument’, it is an imposing sight;
a mix of sobriety and harmony.

SMALL QUIET ROADS,
IDEAL FOR CYCLING...
Circuits from
village to village,
on the plains, over
hills, through vales, and then...
a castle appears! A magical and
comfortable way to enjoy the area ‘close-up’,
and it’s all in the ‘Petite Montagne’!
Zoom on …
“La Caborne du Bœuf”
cave – “The ox’s Cave”
DRAMELAY
AND THE ‘CASCADE DE
LA QUINQUENOUILLE‘ (G3)
Why is it called “The Ox’s Cave”?
‘Caborne‘ is a local word for
cave, and the reference to an ox
is in the stalagmite inside the
cave that looks like an ox’s paunch
(first stomach). It’s a magical site
worth a detour; 176 m of tunnels.
Car park 500m from the cave.
On the outskirts of Chatonnay,
Route de Dramelay, there is a heritage trail (8.5 km) and the 35 m
waterfall offers a lovely sight together with the ‘Gorges du Dard
and its Mediaeval bridge, castle
ruins, and the ruins of Dramelayle-Château. The ruins include the
tower, houses, wells, chapel).
To be discovered….
A certain know how...
THE DINOSAUR TRAIL
IN COISIA (I4)
MOULIN
DU PONT DES VENTS (I1)
Some 140 million years ago, the
area near Coisia was in a tropical
climate. Beaches and lagoons resembled the Bahamas! Now replaced by forests, cliffs, and
overhanging rock formations, the
sea that covered the area was
quite shallow and sand banks
would appear when the sea level
was low. Herds of dinosaurs resembling Diplodocus (sauropods) footprints were discovered
in 2004, revealing that the creatures abounded in the area and
left their footprints in the mud.
A hydraulic ‘Eco-museum’ that
has been operating since mediaeval times. On site you can
discover the mechanisms of the
mill, see how flour is produced,
and see the final product being
made: leaven bread cooked in a
traditional wood oven, and biscuits. Courses available for all the
family to learn how to make your
own bread.

WHERE TO WALK
AND RAMBLE?
Many trails are available and marked; they provide a wonderful
way to see nature close-up, for
all ages and little change in altitude.
This guide provides a comprehensive list and choice of circuits.
OUR SUGGESTIONS:
The problems do not arise from
the difficulty of the trail, but from
the length of the trail. Do not overestimate your ability. Always take
water, small food supplies, and
always tell somebody where you
are going. Stay on the marked trails.

is also a beautiful season
PORT DE LA SAISSE AND
THE ‘MARMITES DE GEANT‘
(C5)
In winter, the ‘Pays des Lacs
et Petites Montagnes’ offers
the charms of the ‘white season’.
Some natural sites reveal themselves
in a completely new light,
and of course the winter sports
come back to life.
At the ‘Port de la Saisse’ in Pontde-Poitte, the rock formations are
called marmites due to their
shape. In the summer the upper
part is visible, and in the winter
with the drop in water level, the
rocks become part of the waterfall
at the ‘Saut de la Saisse’.
The shapes are the result of erosion from the sheer volume of
water and small stones that rush
down from the riverbed.
THE ‘LAC DE VOUGLANS‘
THE ‘CASCADES
DU HERISSON‘
From the first frosts onwards, the
‘Cascades du Hérisson’ start to
change into stalactites and stalagmites, the rivers and the rocks
can get covered in ice, creating
an ever-changing array of shapes
and sounds. Be cautious as the
ground can get very slippery and
access could be restricted in
some places.
THE LAKES
The 7 lakes site, for the most
part, all freeze over in the winter.
If you lend your ear to the quiet
surroundings, you might hear
some strange sounds emanating
from the lakes, but fear not, it’s
not the sounds of some strange
creature from the depths, it’s
only air pockets when trapped
under the surface move around
and create some interesting
sounds!
Balade en traineau avec Terre et Neige
Every year the dam is partially
drained to supply the increased
energy requirements; the banks
become beaches (as the subsoil
is sand), and provide a lunar
landscape with tree roots and
barren sand. There are various
access points to the banks from
the surrounding roads.
PEACE AND QUIET WITHIN
REACH OF THE WINTER
SPORTS FACILITIES
Far from the hustle and bustle of
winter crowds, the ‘Pays des Lacs
et Petites Montagnes’ is within
comfortable driving distance of
the winter resorts: cross-country
(langlauf) skiing at 15 km, and
alpine skiing is at 45 km. Both
resorts offer rental facilities for a
variety of winter sports (rackets,
sledges).
34
RENTAL EQUIPMENT
FOR WINTER SPORTS
All the equipment for winter
sports is available for rent, classic
and skating langlauf/cross-country
skiing, snow rackets, sledges.
Langlauf skiing enables access to
the forests, woods, and fields,
which all offer a peaceful and
unique approach to enjoying the
winter season. Prénovel-les-Piards
has 60 km of marked trails for
langlauf, and some very nice
marked trails for snow rackets.
Trail maps are available at the
base of the resort (Le Duchet).
