GILES HIGH SCHOOL
Volume Two
Legend of Sleepy Hollow
By Lindsay R. Honosky
An amazing story of love, comedy, and horror all wrapped together
graced the Giles High School stage, and the student body was lucky enough
to witness it. This year’s production of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow blew
students, faculty, and townspeople away! Through Larry Marion’s, Barbara
Schied’s, and Kristin Radford’s tutelage, the play slowly became a beautiful
work of art Of course, it couldn’t have been done without the devotion of
the students who worked hard to remember their lines, where certain props
go, and what buttons to press, all while balancing homework and other
school activities. A lot of spit and polish went into this production, and it
Tanner Bivens, Harmony Tripp, Randi Dalton,
came out looking like a jewel.
Betsy Blevins, Katy Allamong, Virginia Greer,
The story begins as Mrs. Van Tassel’s sister, Mrs. Trinkler, comes to
Jenna Warthen, and Emily Fields practice their lines

course, this quaint little Dutch town is quite known for its cooking, and for
its ghosts. Mrs. Trinkler presents quite a problem for the town, as their new
schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane, was supposed to be housed at her farm. The dilemma is quickly sorted out, however, thanks to the
Widow Van Doorn, who kindly offers her house to the new schoolteacher. The villagers quickly accept Mr. Ichabod Crane, all save
Brom Bones, the local ruffian and top mischief-maker in Sleepy Hollow.
Bones has a bit of a jealous streak too, especially when it comes to Katrina
Van Tassel, the lovely daughter of Mrs. Van Tassel and beauty of the small
Dutch town. Ichabod takes a liking to this pretty girl not only for her looks,
but for her inheritance, and he soon plots to marry the young woman to sell
her land and invest it elsewhere. However, Katrina’s no fool; she uses
Ichabod’s interest in her to make her boyfriend Brom jealous. Things
quickly start to heat up between the three, from cute romance scenes to
intense arguments over the girl the love.
And lets not forget the ghosts of Sleepy Hollow. The graveyard is
infamous for its many ghosts and spirits that roam restlessly every night
before the sun rises. There is the wretched spirit of Captain Jordan, the poor
ghost of the Woman in White, and the ancient soul of a nameless Indian chief
who haunt the grounds and prey upon anyone would be crazy enough to walk
their graves at night. And who is the lead of them all, the Hessian soldier
with no name, the Headless Horsemen, who appears out of the shadows and
carries people away,
never to be seen again.
Poor Ichabod Crane, who
was unlucky enough to venture out into this graveyard, met with the angry spirits
of the graveyard, then soon after met his fate at the hands of the Headless
Horsemen. The next morning, Farmer Stuvesant finds a pumpkin lying on the
ground, and another villager finds Ichabod’s aschot, however the schoolteacher
has disappeared, never to be seen again in Sleepy Hollow. Katrina and Brom
Bones get married that next year, and as far as we know the ghosts still haunt the
tiny graveyard of Sleepy Hollow, forever restless with the Headless Horsemen
galloping over them.

Bivens. I asked if he enjoyed working on the production, and he told me, “It’s
always a fun experience to get out in front of the school body and perform. We all
came together well, and it turned out to be one of our most amazing performances.”
The students in the drama production prepare
themselves to perform the Legend of Sleepy
Hollow for the student body.

All-District Chorus
By Lindsay R. Honosky
All-Districts Chorus is a great opportunity for the talented young singers of
Giles High School to spread their wings and experience music on a grander scale.
This program includes students from schools all around the state to test their
musical capabilities. Anyone in a choir program can try out for the event, but only
a select few get to move further. Only the best of the best survive this limit testing
competition of the musical arts.
Who made it from our very own Giles High? For the Senior High event, Katy
Allamong (who made Women’s Chorus), and Duston Rakes, Anthony Woodyard,
Jamie Suroski, Tanner Bivens, and Patrick Mahaney all made Mixed chorus.
From the Junior High event Chelsea Barnett made mix chorus while Virginia
Wickline, Amber Woods, and Fallon Klecak made Women’s Chorus. These
highly talented individuals will go one weekend later in the school year and
practice with a guest conductor who prepares music in advance to perform a
concert for the public. Not only is this event for fun and to test your abilities, but
it also gives those in the Junior and Senior events a chance to try out for AllVirginia Chorus at the Senior High weekend.
So when does all of this happen? Come and watch your fellow classmates at
the Junior High performance, which happens on February 29th and March 1st. The
Senior High event happens sooner, on the 8th and 9th of February. It’s sure to be a
grand event, and if you’re a music lover, you can’t go wrong with a concert
performed by the best singers of all the districts combined together!

Feast yourself on some Punk Rock!
By Gelsina Ceritano
th
Saturday November 17 , Students from Giles High school gathered and
anxiously waited until clocks read four o’clock. Bands from Radford,
Wytheville, Bluefield, Blacksburg and Giles rolled into Matthew (alias
Meatball) Conley’s basement known as “The Meathouse.” The convergence on
his house was to hear one of the biggest shows of the year.
The night opened with the new grunge/punk band, Toxin. Members include:
Clay Bowles on bass, Lead vocalist Duston Rakes on electric guitar and Will
Moses on drums. This was Toxin’s first show and they were able to play a total
of six songs to start the night out with a stellar, punk vibe.
Members of Toxin Clay Bowles, Will Moses,
Following Toxin was Endarken, also a local band who played more of a

metal melody. Later, Couchboy, At Large, United Waste, and The Reasons were
Legions kept the fans satisfied with a rough beat. “I think the ‘Meathouse’ is something that every town needs, just for kids to come
and listen to good punk rock music,” quoted a band member from United Waste. Mosh pits and circle pits were formed and the small,
sweaty basement gave off punk rock vibrations.
Half Sane finished up the night with Giles High school students Andrew
Frazier on drums and Taylor Suydam on bass. Matthew Conley is the band’s
lead vocalist with Bobby
Jarrett on electric guitar, both
of which are Giles graduates.
Half Sane made the crowd go
insane as their music produced
the biggest mosh pit of the
night. After the five songs
were played, the crowd yelled
for more. Half Sane ended the
show with their well-known
song, “So Long Ago” and sold
their EP’s at the door. Overall,

2008 Democratic Presidential Election
By R. Tanner Bivens
After eight years of the presidency of George W. Bush, in 2008 a new president will be
elected. The race for the democratic nominee as been a tough one from the word go. As of now
there are eight democrats running for President, Hillary Clinton, Barak Obama, Dennis
Kucinich, John Edwards, Joe Biden, Mike Gravel, Bill Richardson, and Christopher Dodd.
As of now the much-coveted front-runner position has been a battle between Hillary Clinton
and Barak Obama. It has been a back and forth fight between the two candidates. Clinton has
pulled into a major lead, but due to a bad debate in which she came off as indecisive, she has
dropped in the poles and has been picked up by Obama and the third place candidate John
Edwards.
This year Internet campaigning has become the most popular forum for gaining the younger
vote using venues such as myspace.com and facebook.com. The most active in this campaigning
have been Obama and Dennis Kucinich, who surprisingly enough is the front runner for the
democratic ballot on internet polling even though in normal polls he is not even close to Senator
Clinton, Obama, and Edwards.
Some of the major issues for this years’ candidates are what they plan on doing with the
situation in Iraq and Iran. Some, like Senator Kucinich think that all troops need to be pulled
immediately from Iraq, while others like Christopher Dodd feel that a controlled exit strategy
will be more effective.
Until November next year it is anyone’s race. Though Hillary Clinton is in the lead right now, in 2004 Howard Dean was in the
lead and he lost by a landslide to Kerry and Edwards who just proves that, even though you are winning the race now, doesn’t mean
that you are going to be number one in the end.
Senator Barack Obama attempts
to rally more supporters to vote
for him in South Carolina.
The 2008 Election: Republican Party
By Lindsay R. Honosky
2008 is a big year for the political drama of the Presidential
Caucuses. Both sides battle it out to find who their representative will be
for the upcoming election Public appearances, fund raisers, speeches, and
debates are now a big part of the news casts, newspapers, and magazines.
It’s even more dramatic on the Republican side, who have ran up their years
with the current President, George W. Bush, Jr. The Vice President, Dick
Cheney, has already stated he will not run for the nomination, along with
Chondoleezza Rice, two of the most likely candidates to win the
nomination. However, there are many
other worthy Republicans who’d like

Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York
City. His actions during the 9/11 terrorist attack have made people believe in his leadership qualities
through extreme disasters. However, his views and opinions differ greatly from the general party’s
opinion. He is both Pro-choice and for gay marriage, views that normally the party would disagree
with, yet most Republicans think that these opinions will help him win against the Democratic nominee.
There are many different views this time around in the Republican Party, all in an attempt to
appeal to more voters. They vary from side to side on hot issues like the War in Iraq, abortion, gay
marriage, and many more. The most recognizable one for his different beliefs is long time U.S.
Representative from Texas, Ron Paul. Normally a Libertarian, Ron Paul decided to put his name under
the Republican ticket due to the two-party bias of the country. He’s a Constitutionlist, as in he believes
that we should follow what the Constitution says strictly, and that our laws are based on such thinking.
He was also one of the only Republican congressmen that voted against the War in Iraq and the
PATRIOT Act. He doesn’t get much coverage on the mainstream newscasts, but Congressmen Paul has
become an Internet sensation, with a following of young voters joining the Ron Paul

before, such as John McCain, who lost his party’s nomination against George W. Bush
in the 2000 election. There’s also Fred Thompson, a former Senator from Tennessee
as well as a famous actor on Law & Order. Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, Mitt Romney, and Tom Tancredo are also in the running
for the 2008 election. Each candidate has his own view on how America should be run, and this is the year where they’ll have to shine
the most to please the country’s voting masses. Look them up, study their policies, and make your choice!

Christmas Around the World
By Lauren Thompson
Christmas in China- Christian children in China decorate trees with colorful ornaments made from paper in a variety of shapes
such as flowers, chains and lanterns. Similar to the American tradition of hanging stockings, the also hang muslin stockings and hope
that Christmas Old Man will fill them with gifts and treats. Chinese Christmas trees are called “Trees of Light” and Santa Claus is
called Dun Che Lao Ren (which means “Christmas Old Man”. However, non-Christian Chinese people call this season the Spring
Festival and celebrate with festivals that honor their ancestors. They mainly focus on the children during these festivals, they receive
gifts such as new clothes and toys and watch firecrackers displays.
Chinese people say “Merry Christmas” in one of two ways: (Cantonese) “Gun Tso Sun Tan’Gung Haw Sun”
(Mandarin) “Kung His Hsin Nien bing Chu Shen Tan”
Christmas in Egypt- The Coptic Church (an Orthodox Church) celebrates Christmas on January 7th. For forty days, “Advent” is
observed; during which people are expected to fast and they can eat no meat, poultry or dairy products, however some only do that
during the last week of “Advent”. On Christmas Eve, everyone attends church wearing completely new outfits. The Christmas service
ends at midnight with the church bells ringing. Following the service, people go home and eat a special Christmas meal called fata that
consists of bread, rice, garlic and boiled meat. People in Egypt take kaik (a type of shortbread) and a drink known as shortbat to
friends and family that they visit on Christmas morning. Christmas Day is a public holiday for Christians.
Egyptians say “Merry Christmas” in their native language of Arabic: “Milad Majid”
Christmas in Brazil- Many Brazilian Christmas customs originated from
Portuguese customs. One is the creation of a nativity scene or Presepio
(“presepio” originates from the Hebrew word “presepium” which refers to the
bed of straw where Jesus first slept in Bethlehem). It is common in northeastern
Brazil and they are usually set up in December. Brazil’s version of Santa Claus
is Papai Noel or Father Noel. Brazilians believe he lives in Greenland and that
when he arrives in Brazil, he wears silk clothing because of summer heat. They
also have a huge Christmas dinner that includes turkey, ham, colored rice,
vegetables, and fruit dishes. Catholics also attend Midnight Mass or Misso do
Galo which finishes at 1 AM on Christmas morning. Catholics also go to church
on Christmas day, but the services are usually late afternoon because people like
to sleep late after the dinner called Ceia de Natal. Decorations include fresh
flowers and fireworks that go off over the cities.
Brazilians say “Merry Christmas” in Portuguese: “Feliz Natal”
Christmas in India- Christians in India decorate either banana or mango trees and light small, oilburning lamps for decorations; they also fill their churches with red flowers called poinsettias. They give
presents to their family members and baksheesh, or charity, to the poor people of India. On Christmas,
Christians in South India place small clay lamps on the rooftops and walls of their houses at Christmas (like
the Hindus do during their festival called Diwali). The official language of India is Hindi in Devanagari
script. They say “Merry Christmas”: “Shub Naya Baras”
Christmas in Sicily- Sicilians fast from December 23rd at sunset until December 24th at sunset
followed with a “Yule log” which is kindled. After they pray and sing songs around the Presepio, a feast
begins. They eat a variety of foods that are very different from traditional American foods such as eels,
larks, boiled pasta, fish, sweet bread, and Torrone (a type of nougat). On January 6 children are visited by
La Befana. The legend says that she was so busy cleaning her house that she missed out on going with the
wise men to Bethlehem. Children hang up stockings so that she will fill them with toys and gifts.
Italian is the official language in Sicily. “Merry Christmas” is said: “Buone Feste Natalizie”
Christmas is a very special season all around the world. For more Christmas traditions in different countries, check out the

Pearisburg First United Methodist Youth Group
By Bryan Stafford
The First United Methodist Church of Pearisburg, Virginia offers a
youth group for students in the seventh to twelfth grade range. There are
currently about 15 to 20 members that come to the weekly meetings. The
meetings occur on Sunday’s at 5:30 and end at 7:00 and during the
summer months they start at 6:30 and end at 8:00 to give the youth more
time to enjoy the day. The group embarks on many activities throughout
the year including trick or treating for Unicef and participating in the
annual trunk or treat event held at the church. They also help out on the
holidays by delivering meals on Thanksgiving to those who are confined
to their homes, and they go shopping for Christmas presents for their
families. The biggest event for the youth group happens in January on the
resurrection trip to Gatlinburg. The youth leader, Andy French, has been
leader for the group for just over a year now when the old leader Mr.
Larry Marion gave up the position after 21 years of being leader. Andy
has been involved with the church since he was a baby and was a member
of the youth group when he was in high school. He balances his life with

though because he enjoys spending time with the youth and seeing them
enjoy the activities and come closer to God. The youth group helps out
the community in any way possible and helps out in many of the church activities. The group uses the money that they raise to go on
fun events such as bowling or skating where they can enjoy a time of fellowship with one another. The group also raises money by
selling items with their biggest profit coming from the rummage sale that
they hold with items donated to them. Some of the events the group has
been on recently are bowling at the NRV Superbowl; a night of skating at
the Christiansburg skate park Adventure World, and they also took a twomile hike up to the Cascades in Pembroke. They play games and sports
with one another during the meetings on Sunday evenings and talk about
making the right choices in life as well as sending the church bulletins to
the shut ins. It is a time of fun and fellowship and anyone is welcome. If
you’re looking for something positive to do with your time or to join a
youth group you should check out the Pearisburg First United Methodist
Church Youth Group.

Exercise
By Abby Johnson
Do you feel out of shape but do not know how to start getting into a routine of
exercising? Many students do not play sports but would like to be active. Exercising is a
great way to stay in shape and be healthy. It can also be very fun when practiced in the
right ways. In the wintertime, people tend to want to snuggle up near a warm fire and
drink hot chocolate, but we need to remind ourselves that exercise is important too. So
what can we do to stay in shape? Consider getting a gym membership so if the weather is
freezing, you can still go
indoors to work out. There are so many options to choose from there
ranging from lifting weights to doing relaxing yoga. If you do not want to
spend money on exercising, running can also be a great way to work out.
Although you may not be able to run a marathon when first starting out,
gradually you can get better. Start by jogging for a short period of time and
build up to more and more minutes. Even a simple task such as walking
your dog can be very refreshing. But what is so much more exhilarating?
Snowboarding and skiing tend to be a big thing for wintertime. These fun
leisure activities may not be considered as exercising, but they really are.
“Snowboarding is definitely one of the greatest sports of all time. It is a lot
of fun and you get a rush that you cannot really get from anything else.
Moving back and forth to steer, constantly works out your calves pretty
well and improves your balance,” quoted by senior, Chris Carpenter who
enjoys snowboarding. Another senior, Lauren Scheid commented, “Skiing
is an awesome way to stay in shape during the winter. I love being able to
enjoy the mountains and be outside even when it is freezing!” So when you
have free time, choose a fun activity like one of these mentioned to help
you stay in shape.
Saw 4 Movie Review
By Bryan Stafford
An annual event that comes every year in October around Halloween is the coming
of another Saw film to theaters. This year brought the fourth installment to the
growing series, and it really fires up the imagination of the film's antagonist John
Kramer, otherwise known as the Jigsaw Killer. Even though he was dead at the end of
the last film, the games have just begun for Jigsaw. The movie opens with an autopsy
being performed on Jigsaw and the coroner discovers a tape inside his stomach. The
movie then goes to the officer named Rigg that had been involved with some of
Jigsaw’s victims in the previous films. Rigg soon finds himself caught up in Jigsaw’s
game. As the movie progresses Rigg has to decide whether he wants to save lives or
bring justice to criminals as he gets steps closer to finding his friend Eric Matthews
who went missing in the second film. Eric is being held captive along with Detective
Hoffman where an unknown person is watching them who you find outs identity later
on. After Rigg comes into contact with several people who have committed crimes
and are undergoing Jigsaws traps, he eventually makes his way to a familiar area from
the third film. Like the Saw films before it, the end is sort of a race with lots of
information coming at once with many parts of the movie coming together in the last
moments. There is also a huge twist put into play at the end that you find out, and it
makes you look at the entire movie differently. This is a must see movie for Saw fans,
but I recommend that you only see this one after you fully understand the first three
films, especially the third; otherwise you will be totally lost.

By Lauren Thompson
If you’re looking for edge-of your-seat suspense, then P2 is a movie for you! Starring Rachel Nichols
and Wes Bentley, Rachel plays the role of a businesswoman who is pursued endlessly by a psychopathic
security guard (Wes Bentley). The story begins in an office building on Christmas Eve where Rachel’s
character Angela is locked in a parking garage by a security guard who is not only a little crazy, but also
somewhat obsessed with her. It ends after a long and, at times, shocking and gruesome fight for Angela’s
life. I recommend this movie for any scary movie lover; it is terrific because it is truly suspenseful, from the
moment Angela is locked in the garage till the credits roll at the very end.
Across the Universe Movie Review
By Gelsina Ceritano
Across the Universe is a psychedelic 60’s musical featuring songs by the Beatles. The music is
absolutely beautiful and ties into the film perfectly. You will find yourself drawn to the imagery of
how music mends broken people in life. This musical gives you a pinch of the past and an idea on
how hard it was to fight for peace. Main character, Jim Sturgess stars as Jude, a young man who
travels from Liverpool to the United States to find his long-lost father. Jude meets a few close
friends and moves to New York City as an artist. The Vietnam War has begun and is only making
things more scary and hectic for the 60’s group. This film of love, peace, death, and disaster is
magnificent.

Winter brings sports inside to
the gymnasium for hoops and
excitement with a new season of
basketball. The team hopes to
have a great season with big wins
and many entertaining games for
the fans. After such a wonderful
season last year, the Spartans look
to have a successful season this
year as well. We asked Coach
Reed a few questions about this
year’s team.

getting fouled.
season than last year?
Expectations are just as high or higher, and with the new region setup, it is easier to make
it than last year.
Q: How many games have you won so far? We are 0-2 so far but are just starting to gel.
Q: How many games are there in the regular season? 22
Q: Are there any big things to look out for this season? We return 4 starters
from a team that went to region last year. (For only the 3rd time in school’s
history) We are faster and more athletic than last year.
Q: Do you think that this season will result in more basketball pep rallies? I
hope so. We play much better when we have more fans, and I believe pep
rally's get more students to the games.
Q: Do you believe that the team will go on to play in the second round of the
regional tournament? Again, we hope so due to the fact that they have divided
basketball into 2 divisions this year (just like football). Instead of competing
with 24 teams for region, we now compete with 12.
Above: Coach Reed talks to the team during a
timeout against Carroll County.
Q: Are there any major attitude differences from this year’s team than last
years? I think we believe more in ourselves this year than in the past. I think
these guys believe we should win every time we step on the floor.
Q: Who is the biggest rival team if any? Narrows always...Radford and Glenvar are becoming bigger.

County defender in a scrimmage.

The Lady Spartans have had a rough start to the 2007-2008 year. With only 8 players the
Spartans have had to practice hard and try to over come the adversities of playing games with such
a low roster. The two seniors to this
years team are #5 Kelly Patterson and
#3 Lindsey Meredith. Updates and
Junior Varsity Teams will be in the
March Edition of the Spartonian.

The boy’s team has had a great season so far this year. They have defeated the Narrows Greenwaves twice (with scores of 41-13
and 43-30), as well as Auburn (65-27) and East Mont (45-10). Despite three losses, they continue to play their hardest and have only 4
more games to complete their season. As of December 6, they have a record of 4 wins and 3 losses.

sleep. The next morning the girls awoke, packed their belongings and headed out for
the state meet. The team nervously rode on the bus and arrived at the Virginia High
School League state cross-country meet. The runners warmed up, although the
weather was extremely cold with temperatures in the forties. The gunfire sounded and
the girls were off! Juniors Abby Johnson and Amber McKinney finished in the top

Cheerleading 2007
By Kelsey Frazier
The Cheerleaders of Giles High school always start out the year with enough pep to
go around. The Cheerleaders do a series of activities to show their support of the teams!
Starting with Cheer camp in the summer, they practiced long and hard to look the best and
perform the best in the district. Any football game or pep rally the cheerleaders are always
there cheering on their team. Winning or losing the cheerleaders are what keeps the hope
alive.
