WHAT MAKES A GREAT QUILT GUILD?

A quilt guild should be friendly, friendly, friendly. This is quilting. It’s not the Marine Corps.

The leadership should be happy, happy, happy. Their attitude (whatever it is) will spill over into the group.

All members should be contributing in some way; bringing treats, show-and-tell, putting a quilt in the show,
raising dollars, welcoming visitors, something. Everyone should do something so that no one has to do every-

4.
The business meeting should be short. The Show & Tell should be long. ( but not long winded, see #5)

Show and Tell should be encouraging, uplifting and appreciative! Each participant should speak briefly. In a
great guild, every quilt is applauded and every member lets others enjoy her finishes by bringing them to Show

and Tell. If she has serious stage fright, she ask a friend to speak on her behalf.

The programs are important but they are not the meat and potatoes! The quilters themselves are the meat and
potatoes. The relationships quilters have with each other make a guild cohesive and fun. Going to quilt guild
should be about hanging out with old friends and making new ones.

Meeting Minutes Aug. 28, 2014

1. Dottie Atkins called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm. Jim
Gatlin presented the evening's program. He brought many incredible quilts, all of them made from unwanted and unloved
blocks, scraps, and fabric given to him. He has managed to create remarkable layouts and designs.
needed to be aware of any impact this might have on our attendance so she sent an e-mail to them. Holly Vanhaverbeke contacted the vendors since we are concerned about any negative impact to their sales. She has received very positive responses from
nearly all of them. Some mentioned that they attend both large
shows, such as Dallas, and smaller shows, such as Tyler, which are
scheduled very close together. Because of expenses and differences in the shows, they do very well at the smaller shows. Because the NQA shows are national shows, we will emphasize that
ours is a local, Arkansas showcase. Members were offered a
chance to speak for three minutes each. After these, Norma
Welch made a motion that we keep our next show scheduled for
July 2015. After a second by Meryl Black, a vote was taken and
the motion passed.
8. Wilma Blair showed the completed Opportunity Quilt. Eddie
Landreth did the fantastic quilting. Pictures will be made and

3. Betty Lawson has had two cancellations for Jeanette Huff's
workshop. If you are interested in attending, please contact Betty. Betty also brought along a stack of brown bags. Our brown
bag challenge will begin in September. Each participant should
bring a total of one yard of fabric. It may be in any combination
of fat quarters, fat eights, strips, and pieces as long as the total is
one yard with a minimum of four pieces. Remember to place
your name inside the bag. Finished projects must be ready for
the November meeting.
9. The White Elephant sale netted us $15.40.
4. Nancy Murders reported that she sent a card to Dottie whose
son recently had a stroke. He is recovering. Meryl Black's
daughter has been very ill from her chemo treatments. Please
keep these two families in your thoughts and prayers.

10. Dottie adjourned the meeting at 8:48 pm.
5. The Appli-Q-Ties will continue work on their Crazy Quilt projects on the third Fridays at 12:30 pm. Two new embroidery
stitches will be demonstrated in September.
6. Polly Orr has not yet decided what project the Open Bee will
make for September. If you have an idea or need information,
please contact her. This group meets on the third Wednesdays at
the Irwin Agency at 10:00 am.

Dottie recently learned that NQA has decided to move its
annual quilt shows to Little Rock. The 2015 show will be three
weeks before our scheduled show. Dottie felt that members

Meeting Minutes Sept. 6, 2014
Attendees: Dottie Atkins, Meryl Black, Renee Etie, Betty Lawson,
Rita Michau, Polly Orr, Diana Perry, Holly Vanhaverbeke, Beth
Wynn, Peggy Young
1. Beth Wynn called the meeting to order at 10:00 am. She has
a list of members who were not able to attend today's meeting
but have volunteered to participate. Beth will fill empty slots on
the committee list with these members.
2. Carol Swigart is working on the show books. She has the format to four sheets. We have a bid of $720 to print the books
from Legacy Printers. We will continue to get prices from other
printers.
3. It was decided that we should start contacting guilds and shops
now rather than wait until 2015. Letters or postcards could be
mailed once we have a verified list of contacts. If we choose to
use postcards, Holly Vanhaverbeke offered to print them. She
also suggested that we try to get vendor-sponsored specials for
each show day. Betty Lawson will prepare and print a flyer for
the upcoming Quilt Congress. It will be displayed, along with
show bookmarks, at the Donation Quilt area. We may also ask
that our bookmarks be placed in the “goody” bags distributed at
the event.
4. Publicity for this show has become more important simce we
will have some competition from the NAQ show. Members will be
asked to take flyers and bookmarks to other guilds, quilting shops,
and events. Some of our members belong to guilds in the Village,
Quest, Saline County, and Arkadelphia. We will also try to add
information to newsletters sent by shops and other guilds.
5. There are a number of shows in the state and we may be able
to get our information placed at them. It was agreed that we
should make personal contact with the guilds in northwest Arkansas. Perhaps someone could attend guild meetings or we could
get a booth at the Springdale show. Meryl Black mentioned that
Holiday Island has a small Welcome Center. She will get contact
information for it.
6. Beth will get contact information to Peggy Young for AETN. It
was decided to place additional ads in April and May, if we can
get slots for those months. We will ask that wording emphasize
that we are a local Arkansas-based show.
7. Meryl has the tickets for the Donation Quilt. She will make
packets of ten to distribute to members at the next regular guild
meeting.
8. Beth will contact the Texarkana guild about borrowing their
draperies again. After some thought, it was decided that we
should wait until after the 2015 to purchase our own draperies.
Rita Michau made a motion to that effect. After it was seconded
by Meryl Black, the motion was approved.
9. A picture of the Donation Quilt will be taken for our website.
Betty suggested that Dottie Atkins send a confirmation e-mail to
anyone shipping a quilt for the show.
10. Beth adjourned the meeting at 11:03 am.

5. That fabric you need more of to complete the quilt in #1 (from
last newsletter) was discontinued last month.
6. You will always run out of bobbin thread 1” before the end of the
last border stem.
7. As you put the final stitch in the binding of her Barbie quilt, you
hear your granddaughter say, “Barbie is for babies. I want a Lord
of the Rings quilt.”
8. The fabric you needed more of for the quilt in #1 is back in production, but it is a new dye lot and does not match what you have.
