Dottie`s House Secret Garden Gala Raises More
Summer 2014
Dottie’s House Secret Garden Gala Raises More Than $15,000
Shawn Michaels and Sue Moll of the 92.7 WOBM FM Radio Morning Show were honored
on April 3rd at Doolan’s Shore Club for their outstanding support of Dottie’s House as well
as many other charitable organizations. They have been helping since before the building
was completed, back in 1999. They were selected by the Board of Trustees and
residents of Dottie’s House in recognition of their tremendous work in getting the word
out to the public about the Dottie’s House program and how it offers women and children
who have survived domestic violence the opportunity and the tools to change theirs and
their children’s lives by becoming emotionally and financially independent.
During the evening, two current residents of Dottie’s House shared their personal stories
of what brought them to Dottie’s House and how the program has helped them to
recognize that violent behavior, constant criticism and verbal and physical abuse are totally
unacceptable. One of the residents uses singing as a form of healing and when she sang
Wind Beneath My Wings, she brought the entire audience from the sadness of their stories
to a standing ovation acknowledging the courage and strength that these women have
recognized in themselves……their own inner power and strength.
The Gala raised more than $15,000 to allow Dottie’s House to continue providing housing,
counselling, job training and art therapy for the children. These are just a few of the
programs offered to our residents during the two year program.
We could not do this without the support of our attendees and sponsors, including IMac
Insurance, Investors Bank, OceanFirst Bank, and many others. Entertainment was donated

15th Annual Golf Classic Raises More than $65,000
It was every golfer’s dream…mixed sun and clouds and temperatures in the high 60’s. More than 100 golfers
teed off at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club on May 29th and raised more than $65,000 for Dottie’s House.
As a thank you for their support and participation, each golfer received a pair of Nike slide and a hand rolled
cigar. Steak barbecue lunch was served prior to teeing off and after completing 18 holes of golf, participants
enjoyed cocktail hour and a full buffet dinner, during which awards were presented to best foursome, closest
to the pin and longest drive. During the dinner reception, two survivors of domestic violence made an impact
upon our guests. The first survivor spoke about her journey through the program over the past year, stating
“This time last year, I had only been at Dottie’s House for a few days and I was standing up here with my 5
month old daughter, clutching onto her as I tried to speak. Today, one year later, I am employed full time with
an amazing company and am looking into purchasing a home for my daughters and I upon graduating the
program. Last year I asked Dottie’s House for a chance, and it is because of their acceptance and guidance that
I am standing here before you today, a changed woman who is growing stronger day by day.” The second
survivor expressed her thanks through music, as she sang a heartfelt song, touching everyone in attendance.
She stated, “I never thought I would be able to start my life over, but Dottie’s House has given me that
opportunity. I would like to thank all of you in attendance, the sponsors, volunteers, and most important, the
Dottie’s House staff, because without you I would not be standing here before you today.”
