SIGHTS, SOUNDS, SMELLS AND A HARLEY RIDER NOSE

Twelve thousand miles ago the experience began; my
first year riding a Harley-Davidson. Between a few
scattered showers I rode it home for the first time. I knew
that it meant getting my shiny new 2003 FXDL dirty, but it
was assembled and ready to go. After nine months of
waiting I couldn’t wait another minute … it was time to
ride!
Out of Harley’s House of Harleys parking lot I went on my
Low Rider. Turning right, I headed down Pacific Coast
Highway past buildings and streets seen many times
before, sights both familiar and yet new at the same time.
Listening to the sounds of the V-Twin and Vance & Hines
exhaust rumble, brought a big smile to my face. Then
south past Carlsbad State Beach where the smells of fresh
air, impending rain, and the Pacific Ocean brought,
pleasure to my nose. *
Knows he that never took a ride.
Nosey! the pleasure thence which flows?
Knows, he the titillating joy
Which my nose knows?
Oh, Low Rider! I am as fond of thee
As any mountain of its snows!
I gaze on thee, and feel that pride
A Harley rider knows!
No doubt, we all have fond memories of our first ride on
our Harleys. Without a doubt, we share the pleasure, the
joy, and the pride of riding. We also appreciate the
opportunity we have to ride safely in formation with other
H.O.G. chapter members.

Did you ever wonder what it feels like to be chased by 114 people on
motorcycles on the freeway? Well Sunday the 21st of March I got to
experience that going to the Temecula Valley Poker run. We left Biggs San
Marcos at 8 am with 50 or so bikes and were joined by a group lead by
Marc Collins on Hwy 15 and Mission Rd with another 25 bikes. The weather
here was cool, damp and foggy but once we got past the check point it
started to clear up and we knew we were in for a great day of riding and
enjoying the company of our fellow HOG members. We arrived en masse
at Quaids in Temecula and a rumor was flying that Biggs Chapter had
arrived. Parking was ample and registration went pretty smooth and
everyone got checked in pretty fast. We all got some coffee and donuts
and then the groups started leaving for the 110-mile poker run. The route
took us up 79 to 74 over to Hemet and then back through the back roads of
Temecula wine country with easy turns and switchbacks. Upon arriving
back at Quaids we all enjoyed a lunch of corn beef and chips, well some
enjoyed it. The bands were playing and folks were milling around checking
out the bike show and all the vendors that were there. Then at 3 pm they
started announcing the winners of the poker hands and then the chapter
challenges were announced. They started from the bottom up and went
through all the chapters in attendance with their counts. Top three Orange
Coast with 42, San Diego with 70 and Biggs Chapter with 114. Wow we did
it two years in a row. When Jerry Gleiforst and I went up to the mike for
the presentation they said that the Chapter challenge was $100 but any
group that brought over 100 riders deserved $200. I want to thank all
those that made the run; it was a great time had by all and I know you all
enjoyed it. The gauntlet has been laid down to the other chapters that
Biggs Chapter North San Diego County with new name and all has the most
enthusiastic and fun loven group of HOG members around.
Don’t forget about the Biggs Chapter fun nite held the first Thursday of
each month at Jolt N Joes in Escondido. April we will start a pool challenge
for those interested and if not just come on down for some good old HOG
fellowship. Address is 717 N. Escondido Blvd in Escondido. Pool challenge
will start at 7 pm. So if you have nothing else going that Thursday join us
for some HOG fun. Also don’t forget about LOH Bike Night at Hennessey’s
in Carlsbad the last Wednesday of each month. The weather is starting to
get warmer and we are starting to see more and more HOG members at
the event.
One last thought… Thanks Activities for a bunch of great rides you all are
putting on and it only gets better.

In addition to all of the local Biggs Chapter meetings I attend,
there is a group of us around southern California planning our HOG
State Rally. This will be taking place right in our back yard at Pala
Casino. The dates set are September 30th (Thursday - beginning
registration), Oct 1st (Friday registration and the activities begin)
and Oct 2nd (Saturday registration and more activities). Our Chapter
will be sponsoring an observation run on Friday. We have a great
route planned out which in part goes down Couser Canyon, stops at
Biggs for refreshments then continues east to Bandy Canyon,
Highland Valley and Mesa Grande. On Saturday, there are two poker
runs planned - one sponsored by Temecula and the other by Inland
Empire.
I hope you can all make it to the California State Rally.

Theft Reward Program.
HOG will pay a $1000 reward for
information leading to the arrest and criminal conviction of anyone
stealing a full or full life member’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The
reward is not payable to the member whose vehicle was stolen, the
member’s immediate family, or law enforcement officers.
Information must be reported to the HOG office and to local law
enforcement agencies.
Keep your bike locked, and I hope it is not your bike being
reported.

Something which the staff at Heart Ride 2004 has decided to do
is to involve suppliers and individuals to assist in the building of
our Anniversary addition special V-Rod. Already companies have
committed to giving components to improve the looks of the VRod.
Al Danny Martinez has supplied the beautiful custom paint job
worth over $3,000.00 which adorns the V-Rod. Several other
suppliers have also donated various parts on the bike including
WindVest and Lindall Raciing Brakes, this alone would be special
but we are not done. You, as an individual or supplier can
contribute to the building of the V-Rod by selecting one of the
packages attached as a pdf file attached to this newsletter or as

Well another month has gone by and I get
excited seeing all the new faces and meeting the
new members.
Our Chapter has grown
tremendously over that last couple of years.
That normally happens when you have a chapter
that participates, enjoys the various rides; but, I
think most of all, I enjoy the friendships I have
made through the years. In the beginning, when
I first started attending the meetings and going
on rides, I did not know anyone. But being
persistent, just saying hello and introducing
myself made such a difference. Please come out
to our various events and enjoy yourself. If at
anytime you have any questions regarding this
chapter, please contact me; and I will get you to
the right person.

On October 26, 2003, we lost a large part of
our life due to a wild fire in Valley Center.
Our home and everything inside completely
burned to the ground leaving us with only
memories. We escaped the flames that were
everywhere with fear of not making it out
alive. A new 2003 Harley-Davidson was a
skeleton of burnt metal still standing with the
kickstand.
All of your help and support has made it
easier to adjust to this disaster. We are truly
blessed to have such wonderful friends. May
God bless all of you from the bottom of our
hearts.

TREASURER / HISTORIAN - Farewell
As stated at the March
12th meeting, I have to
resign
my
position(s)
effective immediately. Jim
and I are moving out of
state,
I
have
an
opportunity to transfer to
another Life Care Center in
Scottsdale, AZ.
I will
always treasure the trust
that the members of the
Biggs HOG had in me when
they voted me into the
position for Treasurer. I am
sad that I cannot finish my
term in these positions, yet
glad that Jim and I have a
fantastic future to pursue.
I will miss many of you;
you have become familyfigures to me. As I hope
that I have portrayed to
you all, I loved being a part
of our group! The laughs
that I got to share with
you, and the "History"
questions to stump you.
Well, some of you (Bill
Davis).
I enjoy being a member
of
the
Harley
Owners
Group. The growth in me
through this adventure is
unbelievable.
My coworkers ask me "What did
you ever do before you
owned a Harley?"
My
response is "It was a Harley
or Paxil". When the group
says that if you want to
meet other people in the
group, the best way is to
volunteer,
they
are
speaking the truth.
I
started out loaning our
canopy cover for the Road
Kill Rodeo and the rest is
"History".
To think of where I came
from: a rusty '94 Sportster
with NO riding experience,
to a brand new Road Glide,
then riding a '97 Ultra
Classic home from Utah all
in the first 9 months of
riding.
Appointed the
Historian
of
the
HOG
Chapter and then becoming
the Treasurer, all within a
matter of 2½ years total.
WOW!! What a ride. For
this experience I owe many
Oceanside HOG members
that I watched and learned
from. I can honestly say
that I would not be able to
ride the bike I do, if it
weren't for this Chapter
and its members!

We had a great night at our
March LOH meeting. Sergeant
Rhett Price from the California
Highway Patrol was there and,
as last year, was very
informative and also a lot of
fun. Our next LOH Meeting is
Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at
Dalton’s Roadhouse. As usual,
dinner begins at 6:00 a.m. and
the meeting starts at 7:00 p.
m.
April 24 we will be having a
lunch ride to Palm Springs. We
will be meeting at Biggs in San
Marcos at 10:00 a.m. Some
are planning on staying the
night. If you plan to do so,
you need to line up your own
hotel reservation.
The Palm
Springs ride will end when we
arrive at the restaurant in Palm
Springs.
We are also working on the
third annual Thornton Winery
Brunch Run will be held on
June 27. Mark your calendars.
That is always a great ride and
a great brunch.
Bike Night is Wednesday,
April 28th at 6:30 p.m. at
Hennessey’s in Carlsbad. Wear
an article of Harley clothing or
ride up on your bike and
receive a raffle ticket for the
door prize drawing, prizes
which are donated by our
sponsoring dealership, Biggs
Harley Davidson.

Getting The Stagger Right
Hi Biggs Chapter HOG!
One of the nice parts of riding with our HOG
group is riding with people who are organized
and know what they are doing. Most of us do
some riding with other groups and sometimes
the chaos can be maddening not to mention
unsafe. The basic formation of our rides is the
stagger. It is a great formation. It is compact
as it is the same length as a group riding side by
side plus the length of one bike and one second.
It allows riders to safely change sides of the lane
if required during an emergency. It gives riders
a sense of having a buffer around them and
room to maneuver if necessary.
With Spring here and Summer coming, there
are more events going on that you can attend!
What a great situation to be in. Just pick and
choose which events you want to participate in
and go. Some of these events involve long rides
in warm places.
The method for riding in the stagger formation
is to ride in the center of the right or left third of
the lane, two seconds behind the person ahead
in your third of the lane and one second behind
the rider in the adjacent lane third.
After one knows how to ride in the stagger
formation, it takes some practice before it comes
naturally and can be done well.
The
disadvantage of riding with our chapter for a
period of time is that one's expectation of other
riders is raised and tolerance for sloppiness is
decreased. If you want to irritate your fellow
riders, even to the point that they may want to
throttle you at the next stop, the following will
do it:
1. Not maintaining the proper gap to the
person in front by being ether too close or
too far back. Being to close can take away
your ability to stop safely and the rider in
the adjacent position from being able to
move into your third of the lane if
necessary to deal with an emergency. This
is at the very least discourteous and at
most dangerous for you and your fellow
riders.
2. Not staying in the center of your third of
the lane. This can be dangerous for you
and can interfere with the Road Guards'
ability to observe the group.
3. Riding side by side.
This
acceptable. See #1 above.

4. Rubber-banding.
This is the practice of
constantly changing your speed and or the
gap to the rider in front. The assumed
cause is that the offending rider is not
paying attention or is just plain sloppy.
By living where we can ride all year long, we
have to be prepared for all weather.
The
summer months can surprise us with sudden
cold or wet conditions.
Just ask our fellow
members who have made our annual Big Bear
run!
Heat though, is what we have to be
prepared for first.
When riding in hot conditions, always carry
water with you.
Keep yourself and your
passenger hydrated. Riding with bared arms or
without a shirt actually dehydrates the body and
raises body temperature. Light colors of clothing
are also a good idea. How many times have you
attended an event where the weather was hot
and the guy next to you was complaining of the
heat and he was wearing a black shirt?
It’s a good idea also to carry a heavier jacket
and rain gear especially if you’re going to the
mountains. Again, just ask anyone who has
made the Big Bear trip.
Being prepared for the elements lets us
concentrate on our riding and enjoy the ride.
That is what it’s all about, having fun.
Ride safe, ride smart, and have fun.

fellow riders. We show respect by riding well. If
someone crowds you, wave them back. If you
are having trouble maintaining position for any
reason, drop back and ride with Sweep. Sweep
and the other Road Guards will respect you for
taking action.

IRON HEART 1000 - June 5, 2004
As one of the fundraising events for the Angela
Spence Foundation and Heart Ride, which benefits the
American Heart Association, the Iron Heart 1000’s
success will be largely attributed to the commitment
and dedication of the participating riders and their
sponsors. This ride will be a test of both rider and
machine.
What is the Iron Heart 1000? The Iron Heart 1000
combines the Iron Butt Association’s (IBA) Saddle
Sore 1000 qualifying ride with a fundraising format
similar to the American Heart Association’s Heart
Walk.
The goal of each rider will be to obtain
donations to help the Angela Spence Foundation and
complete the 1000 miles in less than 24 hours. Each
rider that registers will be given a donation kit and the
necessary forms to obtain an IBA certification.
We are currently looking for both riders, sponsors
and a support team to be involved in this event. Here
is how you can be involved:

If you are the type of rider that would like to test
yourself, while raising money for a truly great
cause, we need you.

If you would like to sponsor a rider who is riding

If you would like to help in supporting all of the
riders during the event please contact us and
we will explain what is needed. With riders
leaving from two different points in S. Cal and
two points in Arizona we are looking for
members who can encourage the riders as they
pass through the stop in San Marcos.
OK, Biggs Chapter, come out and support these
riders who plan to ride. There are riders from all over
Southern California and Arizona who have committed.
Currently we have commitments from Biggs Chapter,
Orange Coast Chapter, Ventura Chapter, LA #1
Chapter, Pomona Valley Chapter, Tucson Chapter and
Superstition Chapter from the Phoenix area. Thanks
