former quarters, The Crib, beneath the
Cinema Paradiso building in Ardmore St.
The organisation had long since
outgrown the old space.
At the opening, Queenstown Lakes
deputy mayor Lyal Cocks congratulated
Kahu Youth on providing a ‘‘great asset’’
for Wanaka’s young people.
Kahu Youth programmes and events
for youth in Wanaka include Blue Moon
parties, Matariki celebrations, the
Wanakafest parade and cardboard boat
race, adventure clubs, radio courses,
weekly drop in sessions and a Young
Change Makers group.
THE first South Island
Big Air Boot Camp lived
up to its name, with
riders spending more
time in the air than on
the ground.
A motocross track,
freeriding jumps and
freestyle ramps on farm
land near Alexandra
were the venue at the
weekend for 20 South
Island riders to get
tuition from exCrusty
Demon Luke Smith.
However, lessons fin
ished early yesterday,
after Smith crashed
while demonstrating a
backflip. He was taken
to Dunedin Hospital
with multiple injuries.
Riders at the camp
ranged in age from 15 to
30.

The opening of Kahu Youth’s new base in

The Lees, who founded Car

missions supporting the project.
Mrs Lee said she was in favour
of growth and economic develop
ment in areas such as Cardrona,
which were Wanaka’s ‘‘lifeblood’’
in the winter months. Mr Lee
praised the developers for their
‘‘foresight’’.
‘‘Wanaka and surrounding areas
must keep progressing for the ski

said.

ANOTHER objection has been
lodged on the proposal to build a
ski lodge below the Cardrona Ski
Area access road.
The Otago Daily Times reported
the Upper Clutha Environmental
Society opposed Mount Cardrona
Station Ltd’s proposal to establish
an 875sq m residential building
platform on the lower reaches of
the skifield, and a 392sq m four
bedroom ski lodge, on the grounds
it would have ‘‘significant and
adverse’’ visual and amenity
effects on natural landscape
values. Now the owners of Car
drona Alpine Resort have opposed
the proposal, too.
However, skifield pioneers John
and Mary Lee have lent their
support to the development.
Vealls (Singapore) Pte Ltd, trad
ing as Cardrona Alpine Resort,
said the Cardrona Ski Area access
road, which the applicants ‘‘pur
port to rely on access from’’ was a
private road, and no authority had
been given for its use, or for use of
the road margins to locate power
and telecommunication services.
The resort owners were con
cerned Mt Cardrona Station
wanted to take water out of the
‘‘limited supply’’ at Pringles and
Little Meg Creeks, from which the
skifield has extracted water for
many years for general use and
snowmaking. Additionally, the
applicants’ proposal to access the
area’s existing power supply
which was ‘‘already near or at
capacity’’ meant the supply would
require a ‘‘substantial upgrade’’.
Extra demands already existed
because the skifield’s water rights
and existing power supply were
granted by the Otago Regional
Council before the planned alpine
village at Mt Cardrona Station was
envisaged and Plan Change 18 —
