Annual Report 2008 – Cancer Patients Aid Association

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
With the completion of 2008, Cancer Patients Aid Association has reached the 40th year since its
inception. When we look back at how we started the organisation and where we are today, we feel highly
elated and proud to be a part of this dynamic organisation. Many of the dreams that we had at the time
of inception have been accomplished despite the fact that everyone around us at the time ridiculed our
aspiration and predicted its failure within two to three years. Going through the landmark events and the
moments of joy which all of us have experienced in our wonderful journey gives us immense pleasure
and happiness.
The question that comes to the minds of all of us at this juncture is—what next? Do we pat our backs
and sit on our laurels and continue with the routine, getting pleasure by going down the memory lane to
replay some of the glorious moments we have gone through in the past and be satisfied with it?
My answer and I am sure your answer too will be a definite and categorical ‘NO’.
Our dream now for Cancer Patients Aid Association is to see it grow in the next five years to be
acknowledged as the best NGO in the field of cancer in India and in fact, the entire world. We want our
association to be the benchmark of performance in all the areas in which we are operating against which
similar organisations measure their achievements. I would personally desire for CPAA to be recognised
as an institution that sets the highest standards of excellence and to attain the highest level of learning
and education for cancer NGOs of the world.
While this sounds both abstract and vague and hardly achievable in the form in which it has been written
above, from our track record in the past, I am sure we can reach this goal. To convert my conceptual
aspirations and dreams, I would request each one of you to come out with your own dreams and goals in
more concrete, quantifiable and also time bound terms. Once we have these in place and have collated
them, we will once again have a new and beautiful dream for CPAA like the one we had when three
idealistic young people dared to start the organisation forty years ago. I assure you it will be a pleasure
for all of us to walk on the path that will take us to the fulfillment of these mutual dreams.
Best wishes to all of you.

PREVENTION & EARLY DETECTION
Catch it Early - Better still, Let's Try and Prevent Cancer
We attribute the success of our department to the following three principles of Honesty, Commitment
and Dedication. It has always seen us through in difficult times and helped us achieve what seemed
impossible. Our target for 2008 was to reach out to more and more people through our awareness and
early detection drives and being able to become self-sufficient.
The first step towards this was the open forum programs on cancer awareness in regional languages.
After the success of the first such program, many companies came forward to sponsor them. We
invited renowned oncologist from leading cancer hospitals to speak about the importance of early
detection and regular screening. They also answered questions regarding problems faced by people in
combating the disease.
Our team was also successful in raising funds for meeting our expenses as well as expansion
programs. Along with our regular activities, we made it a point to help to needy cancer patients in all
possible ways.
I would like to thank my team for their invaluable individual contributions and for showing impeccable
team spirit beyond the call of duty.

(C) The department received a grant of 15,000 USD from UICC (International Union Against Cancer)
for their project on 'Control of Tobacco related pre-cancerous conditions in children’; designed to
address specific tobacco related issues in street children & those in prison or remand homes. It aims
to provide ENT checkup to 2,000 children in 2008-09 to uncover existing addictions, to be followed by
regular check-ups. After a survey to assess how and why children start using tobacco, this project got
underway with a free ENT check-up camp and survey for street children at Shelter - Don Bosco and
SMILE for 200 children.

PATIENT CARE
A holistic approach to healing
The Patient Care department tries to be a ray of hope for the patients who come through our doors.
Over and above its patient support activities, the department has been successful in raising over Rs. 1
crore in donations through the dedicated endeavour of all the team members. I would like to place on
record my appreciation of the individual efforts of my colleagues. Last year we initiated a unique
program to provide financial assistance for the education of childhood cancer patients and children of
cancer patients. We received an overwhelming response from donors whose generous donations
enabled us to support 50 such students.
The department also helps spread awareness about cancer through lectures. Our work is now being
shared by an increasing number of volunteers who have attended CPAA's volunteer training
programme. Our Volunteer and Counseling Cell strength has increased to 73.
Our objectives for 2009 is to find prospective donors who will support the entire expense incurred
towards providing drugs for patients at individual hospitals, to help rehabilitate greater numbers of
patients and start a support group for Childhood Cancer Patients and Breast Cancer patients.

(D) CPAA helps Santosh Thapa fulfill his dream: CPAA's stated motto, ‘Total Management of
Cancer’ means that we try to help the patient in a holistic manner, treating the individual rather than
the malignancy. So when a 20 year old boy came to us for help for the treatment of his father
suffering from prostate cancer, we did not stop at the patient's illness. We learnt that Santosh was a
B.Com student, wanting to become a CA. His father, a watchman, had lost his job due to his illness
and his mother worked as a house-help. His education fund had been used up for his father's
treatment and it looked as if he would not be able to fulfill his dream. CPAA stepped in and besides
paying for his father's chemotherapy, helped Santosh to raise the funds he needed for his education.
While his enrolment fees were paid by a kind Samaritan, his tuition fees for coaching classes were
donated by the Asian Paints Charitable Trust and M.L. Budhrani Trust.

Rehabilitation Center
Building up Lives Again
The best assurance you could give to a patient is the chance for survival. Cancer, post the diagnosis
and treatment stage, is not an easy path for any patient. A need arises for the patient to gain great
emotional and economic support, for him/her and the family. The Rehabilitation Centre believes in
making this shift, a reality.
Our aim is to teach every individual, that we come in contact with, to fish, rather than us giving him
the fish. We go beyond the do-good stage; we are at the make-a-difference stage.
To make this journey enjoyable, sincere effort is made to provide personalised care and attention to
each patient / family member in terms of vocational training, counseling and support.
The USP of this centre is that apart from being a Rehabilitation Centre, it is also a ‘Profit Centre’,
where a hundred odd people work diligently for long hours, cutting, stitching, painting and packing a
variety of products for the most discerning of customers in India and abroad, thereby generating funds
required to run this operation.

CANCER INSURANCE POLICY
Ensures regular funding for expensive and prolonged cancer treatment
Despite the recession and increase in the service taxes, the policy department continued to be a
reliable support for its 11,833 policy holders. We were able to settle all the 533 claims on time and
also pay the annual premium of Rs. 2,89,84,812 to New India Assurance Company Ltd. Taking into
account the considerable increase in cancer incidence, we have decided to encourage more and more
policy holders to go for their annual follow-up checkups.
Over the years the Cancer Insurance Policy Department, has also become front-runner in organising
entertainment events for the patients and hopes to continue to do so in the future.
Our goal for the future is to strengthen ourselves and grow, to reach out to larger groups of people,
educating and spreading awareness about cancer, making a positive difference in prevention, aiding
and assisting those who fall victim to this disease.

FUNDRAISING
For the last 40 years, Mrs. Siloo Jasdanwalla- Hon. Secretary and Mrs. Rekha Sapru- Hon. Jt.
Secretary have been heading the Fund Raising Department, with the aim of constantly nourishing
CPAA's activities and fulfilling the vision and dreams of our Founder Chairman and CEO. From a small
beginning, the Fund Raising Team has been able to collect Rs. 2 to 3 crores annually by organising
various fund raising events such as film premiers, music programmes, fashion shows and plays.
Due to the current financial crisis and recent recession, the team has decided to focus on raising
money in small denominations through sale of newspaper collected from corporates, banks, etc.;
money boxes and direct salary deductions. It has been noticed that the amount collected through
Newspaper collection was around Rs.1.5 to Rs.2 lacs per month in the past and we aim to take the
figure to Rs.4 to 5 lacs per month.
In the present scenario, when old sources of funds have dried up, CPAA is able to continue its
activities through innovative schemes for raising funds like the online “Payment gateway” on our
website and the organisation of the annual Art Exhibition with Cymroza Art Gallery.
At CPAA, we have now introduced the principle that fund raising is the responsibility of everyone in the
organisation, and hence all the various departments have started collecting funds and are becoming
increasingly self sufficient.
Since we are working for a good cause, it is our expectation that we will continue to get the support
we need in newer forms and sources.

7
NEW PROJECTS
By definition, our department has the responsibility of initiating new activities with the aim of
broadening the scope of CPAA in line with emerging technology, ideas or issues.
ACHIEVEMENTS
•
CPAA's website was initially set up to provide information on our activities. Almost a decade old
now, it has achieved so much more. It has acted as a bridge between patients and doctors,
patients and NGOs and between other NGOs. We have sent brochures, leaflets, posters and
stickers all over the world and to interior India. For example, we helped put a breast cancer
patient in touch with a relevant support group in Peshawar, Pakistan. We provided literature in
Gujarati to an American nurse in Atlanta, USA for her patients. We provided guidance to women
who found lumps in their breasts in small towns in UP.
•
Psyco-Oncology Volunteers Training Programme: This course, conducted in cooperation with
Nalanda, Times Foundation, was developed by Meghana Suchak, and provides a framework for
committed persons wishing to contribute to the fight against cancer. Over 75 graduates of the
programme from widely differing backgrounds are now part of CPAA’s volunteer network, guided
by Susmita Mitra.
•
Translation of Cancer Information brochures into Regional Languages: Brochures and
leaflets on Chemotherapy, Radiation, Breast Self Examination, Various kinds of cancers, ‘Amit
Beats Leukemia’ for children suffering from cancer have been translated into Hindi, Gujarati,
Marathi, Bengali through the efforts of Susmita Mitra. This helps to answer patients’ questions in
a manner easily understood by them.
•
Expansion of CPAA counseling cells to newer hospitals such as Hiranandani Hospital.
•
Coming of Age of the Art Exhibition: In its 4th year, the art exhibition was able to attract
some of the most senior names in the world of Indian art through the dedication of Piali Syam.
The exhibition now finds mention in the CVs of artists who have participated in the past showing
the value they place on it.
•
Networking: CPAA joined the Cancer Care umbrella body of cancer related NGOs working in
India. Through the organisation of the Reach to Recovery training programme, we have been able
to get in touch with organisations not only in metros but in smaller towns where information
needs to be given on an urgent basis. CPAA joined in the organisation of the Terry Fox run for the
first time.
•
Globalisation: CPAA is seen to be knowledgeable about cancer related issues in India and is
referred to by international bodies. Participation in conferences, workshops, meetings has helped
expose a majority of our employees to the international stage.
•
Widening the use of the website: This year many innovative additions have been made to our
website thanks to the work done by Aditi Bapat, Bani Anand and Pooja Karkera. Downloadable
cancer awareness slides in English and Hindi, the Affordable drugs campaign, the e-newsletter,
constantly updated clippings files are just some of the valuable information available on our site,
newly named cancer.org.in reflecting nomenclature used all over the world.
•
Development of a unified design for all CPAA literature: ‘Branding’ is increasingly being
seen to be important in projecting an organisation visually to ensure the best possible first
impression. A unified design across all departments will help even those not directly in the field to
recognize our organisation.
•
Patient Support Activities: The New Projects department realised that it is important to reach
out to patients from a higher socio economic strata who have different problems from those faced
by patients we have been interacting with so far. We organised a retreat for patients and their
care givers which resulted in heart warming bonding between the participants and their family
members as well as the facilitators. We plan to start similar support groups for childhood cancer
patients.
•
Tobacco Cessation Campaign: The lack of a method for helping tobacco addicts quit tobacco
was seen as a gap in CPAA’s Total Management philosophy. Shital Raval underwent training at
Tata Memorial Hospital and has initiated a programme for corporates to help their employees quit
tobacco habits.
•
Involving Media: CPAA gave meaningful interviews which speak about real issues of cancer
patients. Mr. Y. K. Sapru, Ms. Anita Peter and Dr. Shubha Maudgal were quoted in such articles
which reflect the respect given to the NGO.

NEW DELHI BRANCH
The year 2008, has been outstanding. The collective efforts and focused determination of our small,
but competent team has opened many avenues for cancer related work in New Delhi.
An achievement that we are proud to talk about this year is, Avon Global selecting us as their partner
for Breast Cancer Awareness for 2009. CPAA was the only NGO selected, by Avon Global to be their
partners in India for their global walk around the world for Breast cancer awareness which was held, in
Gurgaon, on 7th December 2008. Avon intends to organise similar walks for breast cancer awareness
in Mumbai in 2009.
In recognition of our work, AIIMS Hospital approached CPAA to help engage their doctors and nursing
staff to participate in the hospitals play group activities.
People from all walks of life have come together to start a support group for CPAA. This group works
as a resource for us, in areas of initiating and planning activities for our patients.
The year 2009 brings newer targets to be met, a challenge we take upon ourselves to make better the
ACHIEVEMENTS
lives of our patients. Last but not the least we are grateful to the Mumbai Head office for the unstinted
support which has helped us to come this far.

PUNE BRANCH
2008 has been a successful year for the Pune branch, thanks to the concerted effort and good work of
our team. The beginning of the year was a difficult phase for us due to the loss of our colleague
Jayshree Lilani, who was our source of strength and courage and played a very important part in
raising funds.
Despite the tough economic times that the world is being hit by, CPAA Pune received a generous
amount of donations and sponsorship which helped the team managed meet its targets.
It gives me great pleasure to share, that CPAA has been selected by the Abhijeet Kadam Memorial
Foundation as the best NGO working towards a humanitarian cause. We were honoured to receive a
donation cheque from the superstar Shahrukh Khan at the Abhijeet Kadam Memorial Football match
2008.
The Pune branch also participated in the Yellow Ribbon NGO Fair this year which was organised by the
Ishanya Foundation. Our stall at the fair sold products created at the Rehabilitation Center and was a
recipient of a certificate from Ms. Kiran Bedi.

CHENNAI BRANCH
‘I thought my association with Cancer Patients would be a distant dream…” when I had to make my
move from Mumbai to Chennai, this was the first thought that ran through my head.
My initial few days in Chennai, got me an introduction to Paterson Cancer Center which kept alive the
immense joy I get out of working with cancer patients. But my chance to establish the Chennai
chapter of CPAA seemed like a miracle, it not only gave me the opportunity to work with patients it
was the best way to keep my association with CPAA. And this time it needed to be stronger and much
better than ever before. Over a short span of one year, our work in Chennai has been far reaching.
This was only possible thanks to the encouragement and support of my friends and colleagues. I would
like to thank in a very special way Mr Y.K. Sapru, Dr. Shubha Maudgal, Mrs Gulshan Hodiwalla, Mrs Iva
Athavia and Dr Indu Nair.
`
I would also like to acknowledge the guidance that was given to me so freely by Paterson Cancer
Center.
As a new year approaches, the road for CPAA’s growth in Chennai is long, but my goal is to continue
to spread awareness about our work and give patients the support and help they are looking for in
whatever way we can.
~ Padma Narayanan, Director, Chennai Branch
ACHIEVEMENTS
The Chennai chapter of Cancer
Patients Aid Association is still in its
infancy. Getting used to Chennai took
me some time, but happened much
faster than I assumed. My initial work
with Paterson Cancer Center, gave
me an understanding of the culture of
the place. Nine months after setting
up, I am now at ease with the
patients. Knowing the local language
(Tamil) made communication easier.
It is really heartwarming, to see
patients looking forward to my visits
to the hospital. While in Mumbai, I
was a visiting volunteer at B.Y. L.
Nair Hospital and Cama & Albless
Hospital. Talking to the patients and their family members, doctors and other staff, distribution of
Complan and other health foods to the patients were some of my responsibilities.
Now that I have started the Chennai branch, there are so many more aspects that go into the working
and running of the organisation. Raising funds is a very large part of the work we do, in the last nine
months I have been able to collect Rs.8 lacs.

Rose Day- To celebrate the opening of CPAA Chennai, Rose Day seemed like the perfect
opportunity. On the 22nd September 2008, we had an inaugural ceremony in association with the
Paterson Cancer Center, this event was sponsored by Indian Overseas Bank and got a great
media response as it was telecast in Tamil News Channel (Doordarshan) and written about in
leading Tamil News Papers.
World Breast Cancer Awareness Month- October brings Breast Cancer Awareness; to support
this mission CPAA conducted a free awareness and early detection camp for women at Hindu
Mission Hospital, Tambaram. This program too was with the help and support of Paterson Cancer
Center. We were able to spread our message to 70 women.
Cancer Care – It was my great pleasure to represent CPAA in Cancer Care’s Annual General
Body Meeting held in Chennai organised by CANSTOP on 7th November 2008.
Forthcoming endeavours: We are working hard to bring out a publication on the similar lines of
‘Sahayata’ in Chennai. I truly feel that an informative directory like this would be beneficial to our
patients. In the years to come I would also like to bring to Chennai CPAA’s insurance scheme and
at the moment I am concentrating on growing our volunteer bank, so that we can reach out to
large groups of patients.

Participants from all over the world
attended. The intensive course included
lectures on basic science, design of
clinical trials, ethical issues, data safety monitoring, international issues, informed consent.
Clinical trials are extremely important to cancer patients who need access to newer treatment
options as existing modalities fail. Indian laws made it difficult for patients to get included in such
trials. But recent change in legislation is paving the way to the possibility of greater involvement
in future. It is therefore useful and necessary for NGOs like CPAA to understand the risks and
benefits to help protect and project the rights of needy cancer patients. Participants got the
unique opportunity to hear and interact with Dr. Dennis Slamon, who developed Herceptin as a
targeted therapy for breast cancer as well as other well known lecturers.
