We then began helping a few patients each month with free medicines. Gradually, we began counseling patients and their relatives. We moved on to organizing cancer screening camps and then established a dedicated Patient Care department. It has taken us 4 decades of hard-work, enthusiasm, total dedication and the passion to alleviate the suffering of cancer patients to reach this position. Today, CPAA is recognised both nationally and internationally as one of the leading cancer NGOs of India. Premier educational institutes like the Harvard, Princeton and Duke Universities choose to send their students to CPAA as a part of their internship program. International schools like United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) have selected CPAA as their charity project and have organized several fundraiser events for the same. International medical journals like The Lancet Oncology have published articles related to CPAA’s activities in their journals. These positive strokes of appreciation serve as a reward for the dedication and collective efforts of our team. But that doesn’t mean that we just rest on our laurels. We derive encouragement from this, recharge our batteries and prepare for a new leap, a new resolution, a new goal; keeping in mind our motto of ‘Total Management of Cancer’. We succeeded by organizing 11 such programmes within the year. We were also able to help a number of patients at various hospitals with donation in kind. Through carefully planning we were able to also raise funds so as to make our department financially independent. This we were able to do due to the continuous support, tireless efforts, co-operation from all our doctors, CPAA members, staff and several social activists and corporates, whom I give my sincere and special thanks. We were able to complete at least 60% of the goals set by us. We were able to completely take care of Chemotherapy, Radio therapy & Prosthesis requirements of patients at 3 major hospitals. We have been able to match the rise in childhood leukemia cases, by helping over 315 such patients. Each patient sent to us by doctors and volunteers, comes with hope and faith and goes back with a positive attitude after our counseling. One of our major objectives in 2011 would be to start a Palliative Day Care Centre, a childhood support group along with supporting maximum women cancer patients with their rehabilitation. The Taj Mahal Hotel group was the major contributor to this success. With multiple new properties opening up and CPAA being on their preferred vendor list, we were flooded with linen orders. This not only resulted in increased revenues, but prompted us to expand our production capacity. Rehabilitation Centre now has 2 Tailoring units comprising of 20 imported sewing machines and 8 supplementary machines, working 9 am to 9 pm, giving opportunity to new entrants to learn and to earn. But it is the every smiling Bessy Nadar that brings sunshine into the Rehabilitation Centre. A breast cancer survivor, Bessy is the sole bread winner for her idle husband and two teenage sons one of whom is mentally challenged. Very frail of body but very strong of spirit, Bessy is always very calm and serene, punctual and hard working. In 2010, one by one, Bessy lost all her teeth due to the progression of her disease, but not for one day she lost her smile! Now she wears an artificial denture, but to us her smile is even more enigmatic. (A) TOTAL NO. CANCER PATIENTS AID ASSOCIATION - ANNUAL REPORT 2010 Page 9 Special Projects Executive Director: Shubha Maudgal At this time every year, the Special Projects department takes a deep breath and look back at the year gone by. Today we can take pride in how far we have come not just in the short term-in 2010, but the long term. The theme for AGM 2000 was taking CPAA into the new millennium. A decade later, we can truly say that we have arrived. And the Special Projects Department takes immense pride and pleasure in what we have done to drive this change. Our website and the online payment gateway have revolutionized the way CPAA is perceived all over the world and in remote areas of our own country. Every day we receive and respond to emails that provide much needed information and assistance. Through the website we have communicated with over 30,000 people, some 20,000 of whom continue to follow us through our newsletter. Our department has created innovative means of fund raising such as the annual Pinktober programme at Hard Rock Café where we organized awareness lectures in Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune. CPAA now consistently raises significant funds through the Mumbai marathon, celebrity dinners and cricket matches. We are the only NGO to get funding from the UICC twice under their Capacity Building Programme. Even our awareness lectures and literature have become a source of funds and our art exhibition continues to touch new levels of success. We could further strengthen our activities and increase our reach to the masses. We are now financially secure and have done some major tie-ups like with Hilton International South Pacific, Avon (renewed their support from 2010 to 2011) and the Global Charities, USA. As a result of this we are able to help more patients and disburse more medicine. We have been recognized as one of the leading NGO in Delhi for the cause of cancer as a result many hospitals contact us to help their social workers. It gives me immense pleasure to say that we could also meet our targets in various departments.
