Public Library District, serving
the communities of Norridge and
Harwood Heights, Illinois.
Edited and designed by
Christopher Clark.
THE
INSIDE
TRACK
After forty years of dedication and Library love, Linda Woyner, Eisenhower’s Business
Manager, is planning her retirement. Linda was the very first employee hired by
the Library’s original director, Fred Donnelly. She played a major role in advancing
Eisenhower from a Project Plus library into the publicly supported library district that
it is today.
As Secretary to the Library Board and the Director, Linda has kept everyone
at Eisenhower on track. For forty years, she has attended every board meeting,
keeping the minutes meticulously. She has prepared forty years of Illinois State
Annual Reports according to state-mandated regulations and timetables.
Linda has worked closely with trustees, directors and library staff. At times, she
has found herself playing the role of confidant and shoulder to cry on. When Fred
Donnelly passed away on Good Friday, 1976, the entire Library was stunned and
saddened. Linda guided us through this sad event, making Fred an enduring
memory at Eisenhower, and smoothing the way for his successor, Sue Biskup.
When Sue stepped down in 1979 and I took over, Linda had a new director to
educate. She patiently lent a hand in advising me on the ins and outs of library
district law, helping me with everything I needed to successfully guide the Library’s
operations. Her one caveat: handle anything you need during Board meeting week
for yourself or wait until the following week. For Linda, the Board has always come first.
Linda’s dedication to the Library has been inspirational. She rose to her position
through hard work, a tenacious pursuit of continuing education, meticulous record
keeping and a willingness to change with the times. Everyone at Eisenhower will miss
an irreplaceable member of our family. Here’s to you, Linda. Our Board, the staff
and I salute your work and thank
you for your many years of service.
We hope you enjoy retirement. You
deserve it.

EXPLORE...YOUR NEW LIBRARY WEBSITE
Welcome to Eisenhower 24/7!
The Library’s new website promises
to be our “online branch,” available
to patrons twenty-four hours a day,
seven days a week. The new site
gives you instant access to book
reservations, online database
research, book reviews written
by our staff, personalized book
recommendations and so much
more. Our new site is available from
a home computer, but it is also
designed to be fully functional from
any smartphone or tablet, so you can
access the Library no matter where
you are, any time of the day or night.
The new site sports an appealing
look, but visual design was not our
first priority. The guiding principle
during the redesign was to focus on
content first, to make the website
truly worthy of being called an
online branch. Once the content
was in place, site navigation was
developed to make finding what you
need quick and efficient.
Below are highlights of a few of the
new and/or improved features of
the site.
The homepage has a variety of
new features: a photo rotator
highlights special programs and
events. Library News keeps you
up-to-date on important Library
information. Upcoming Events lists
imminent library programs and the
New Arrivals bookshelf features
new items in our collection which
you can click on to reserve. Special
40th Anniversary and One Book,
One Community pages have been
created and can be accessed
directly from the homepage as well.
“I Want… A Great Read” is a
unique book suggestion tool that
recommends a book for you based
on the genre or subject you pick.
Use it to find your next great read.
Interior pages feature a menu
which “sticks” to the top of the page
as you scroll down. This allows you
to see the main site navigation no
matter where you are on any page.
The Our Collection menu choice
shows information on our collection
divided for Adults, Teens and Kids.
Under each you will find resources,
bookshelves and blogs tailored for
each of these groups
Under the Research tab you will
find database and other research
resources broken down by age or
subject to make doing research as
easy as possible. A full alphabetical
listing is also available for you to
browse.
Programs & Events, our new
calendar, allows you to filter events
by age or category, making it easier
to find the book discussions, film
screenings, performances or other
library events that interest you.
A full calendar view is also still
available.
Our Connect with Us page gives you
multiple ways to stay connected to
the Library with a listing of our blogs,
electronic and printable versions
of the newsletter, a place to signup for monthly email newsletters
and connections to all of our social
media sites. Frequently needed
Library phone numbers can be
found here too. Share your favorite
library memories, look for volunteer
opportunities and find out about the
Friends of the Eisenhower Library
under Get Involved.
Turn to the How do I? section for
answers to all of our most frequently
asked questions when you want to
find out information quickly.
Other features of the site include
Community pages with contact
information and addresses for
various organizations and agencies
within the community; a Local
History page that serves as a portal
to our extensive digitized local history
collection; and a personalized
Book Recommendation form that
allows you to ask our librarians
to recommend books just for you
based on your specific reading
interests.
We really hope that you will check
out our new virtual library branch
at www.eisenhowerlibrary.org and
take the time to explore all of its
new features. We look forward to
hearing what you think.
eReaders at Eisenhower
The results of a recent Pew Research Center study show that electronic book reading is on the rise. More
than half the population still reads physical books, but the percentage of eBook readers has increased
dramatically. Nearly a quarter of all readers aged 16 and up reported reading an eBook in 2012.
The Eisenhower Public Library District is proud to offer the eReader-owning residents of Norridge and
Harwood Heights the opportunity to check out eBooks and upload them right onto their eReaders. We
also have a collection of circulating eReaders preloaded with a variety of great books and magazines.
And for our patrons who just want to know what all the fuss is about, we hold regular eReader Petting
Zoo programs which provide you with the opportunity to get your hands on a Nook or a Kindle. For more
information or assistance with any of these services, call 708-867-2299 or ask at Answers.

RECO
The Shadow of the Wind
by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
Recommended by Dan
The Shadow of the Wind is one of the
bestselling books of all time, selling more
than 15 million copies since its release in
2001. The novel, set in post-war Barcelona,
centers around a bookseller’s son. The
son, Daniel Sempere, selects a novel from
a library of rare books, enjoying it so much
that he searches for the rest of the author’s
works, only to discover that someone is destroying every book the
author has ever written. This book fits perfectly into the genre of
books for book lovers.
Speaking From Among the
Bones by Alan Bradley
Recommended by Stacy
The irrepressible child chemist and detective,
Flavia de Luce, is at it again in the fifth
installment of the award-winning series that
began with The Sweetness At The Bottom
Of The Pie. The town folk of Bishop’s Lacey,

anticipating the unearthing of the bones of
St. Tancred, the 500 year-dead patron saint of the village church.
Flavia, as always, is ahead of the game and discovers the body
of a much less saintly person instead – St. Tancred’s organist,
Mr. Collicutt. With the help of her trusty bicycle, her chemistry lab
and her boundless tenacity, Flavia sets out to discover who would
have wanted Mr. Collicutt dead and why.

Beautiful Ruins is the perfect beach read. Having said that, I have to admit that I
hate sand and can’t read in bright sunlight. But you know what I mean. Real
people mingle with the made up ones in the course of this novel which spans fifty
years. It has everything: romance, Italy, movie stars, travel, food, intrigue, did I say
Italy? First and foremost it is a love story.

YOUNG ADULT
Darkest Minds
by Alexandra Bracken
Recommended by Andrea
The first book in a brand
new series by young adult
novelist Alexandra Bracken is
a dystopian novel that follows
a young heroine on her journey
to survive the government’s
attempts to suppress a
mysterious outbreak. But the government isn’t her
only problem and she quickly learns that she isn’t
the only one trying to escape. In exciting and often
heartbreaking twists, Ruby is constantly on the run
as the world around her tries to force her kind out of
existence. But everything changes when she decides
to fight back.
Hero Mom
by Melinda
Hardin
Recommended
by Mary
A companion to
Hero Dad, this
book features
proud children
talking about the different jobs their mothers have in
the military. A perfect read for younger children, the
text is simple, the pictures are big and bright and the
message is positive without becoming preachy.

First organized in 1968, the Friends of the
Eisenhower Library has a long history of
actively supporting the Library by providing
circulating materials, organizing programs,
engaging speakers and raising community
awareness. Most notably, the Friends
group played a pivotal role in the passing
of a referendum that paved the way for the
beautiful new building that currently houses
the Eisenhower Public Library.

LANGUAGE
Is your first language something other
than English? Would you like to increase
your English proficiency?
The Eisenhower Public Library District

in our community. Our vision is one that
will expand the opportunities for our
residents to learn English across a variety
of platforms.
