INTRODUCTION
This is the 16th edition of the Chingford Foundation School Sports Magazine and
in this edition we will review the outstanding team and individual performances
made during the 2010/2011 academic year.
There have been many highlights again this year but probably the most pleasing
is our domination of athletics within the Borough along with the fact that two
teams reached the final of the football Essex Cup this year. Indeed, special
praise should be mentioned to the girl‟s athletics teams who completed a clean
sweep in each Borough Championship and the year 10 boy‟s soccer team who
brought the County Cup back to Nevin Drive. As always I am delighted to report
success in all our other major sports such as netball, cricket, basketball and
cross country where we again did superbly.
Links with outside clubs continue to excel. My thanks to all those coaches who
have contributed to our extra curricular programme. These have included:
Eastside Eagles basketball club, Orion Harriers athletics club, Lakers
netball club, Heathcote table tennis club, Chingford School of tennis,
Chingford Rugby Club, Chingford Cricket Club, Connaught Squash Club,
London Youth Rowing, Essex County Cricket Club, Chingford Golf Club.
This is a significant range of sporting links and I urge all students to broaden their
experience and try a broad and balanced sporting lifestyle.
I would like to thank colleagues who have helped by taking teams or clubs or
helped with transport. Their help is much appreciated and without their
assistance this extended out of hours programme could not take place: Miss
Culverhouse, Mr Kemal, Mr Carter, Miss Burridge, Mr Cain, Miss Shorter,
Mrs Gordon, Mr McElligott, Mr Rodney, Mr Taborda, Mr Myers, Mr Jenkins,
Mr Nembard, Mr Arnsby and Mr Hodge.
Lastly, I would like to thank both Miss Sandford and Miss Shorter who move on
to new challenges. I am sure you join me in wishing them both every success in
their new roles and thank them for all their hard work within the Department.
Mark Leadon (Head of PE Faculty, Assistant Headteacher)
FOOTBALL
The highlights of the football season were
undoubtedly two teams reaching the finals of the
Essex County cup with the year 10s managing to
secure the title. It is also pleasing that we
continue to provide a number of boys for Waltham
Forest District. We shall start our review of the
sporting year by focusing on the manager‟s
thoughts of their football season.
Year 7
This was in many ways an encouraging year for the Boys‟ Year 7 Football team.
Although ultimately it ended without any silverware, there were plenty of signs of
potential that we hope can be fulfilled in the coming years.
When building any team from the very beginning, any manager will tell you that
forming a strong defence is your first priority, and this is certainly the case with
this side. Marshaled by the enigmatic skipper, Denzel Williams, the back four
and goalkeeper at times performed heroics in keeping the opposition at bay. As
the season went on Williams was unavailable on occasion for selection, perhaps
one of the most pleasing aspects of the year was the development at centre-back
of Toby Edwards; a „Mr. Consistency‟ who barely put a foot wrong throughout.
At full back, Lewis Richmond and, initially Dills Christofi proved to be very
much in the mould of the modern full back in providing a clear attacking threat as
well as defensive stability. Josh Rennie-Smith came into the side at full back
and became one of the first names on the team sheet with his no-nonsense style.
Of course, if you get past that lot, you still have the imposing figure of Olgan
Yoldirim in goal to beat. His confidence and stature grew as the season went on.
Christofi, in fact, showed that he was able to play both in midfield and attack and
was a contender for Player of the Year. That accolade went to eventual skipper
and linchpin Gino Ahmet, the focal point of the team whose attitude was
fantastic all season. He was given able support in the engine room by the likes of
the muscular Daniel Aiyeola and Sam Higgs. Creativity from midfield was
largely provided by our tricky wingers; opposition full backs were terrorised by the
skills of Harvey Canham on one side and Christofi on the other. Josh Coster
was also utilised out wide and showed great promise.
Up front there is a burgeoning „Henry and Bergkamp‟-style partnership. The
artistry of George Maginnis who drops deep and finds pockets of space, allied
to the blistering pace and ruthless finishing of Jordan Bailey was a terrifying
prospect for opposition in the early part of the season. Later on, when, sadly,
Bailey was unavailable, Jordan Sayer stepped in to the breach and became just
as much of a threat.
There were certainly highlights to the season; impressive victories over Rushcroft
and Norlington gave a tantalizing glimpse into future glories. Unfortunately we
were to exit the cup competitions early on whilst we finished in fourth place in the
Northern section of the League ensuring division one football next season.
There was something of a mid-season re-shuffle and a mention must go to the
supporting role played by the likes of Teddy Johnson and Lawrie Farrelly who
did enough in the last third of the season to show that they are going to push
hard next year and beyond.
With such quality in depth the future certainly looks bright.
Squad O. Yoldirim, T.Edwards, L.Richmond, D.Williams, D.Christofi, J. RennieSmith, D. Aiyeola, G.Ahmet, S. Higgs J.Coster, H.Canham, G.Maginnis,
J.Sayer, J.Bailey, T.Johnson, L.Farrelly, J.Day, L.Barlow, L.Farrelly, B.Cole,
R.Cox-Reid.
Year 8
The year 8s made significant progress this year although just missed out on
silver wear finishing runners up in both the league and cup.
The team started off very confidently and were particularly solid at the back.
New recruit Ben Goodyear complimented the outstanding Brad Lantieri and
with the ever reliable Albie Drew in goal it meant that few goals were let in.
Down the flanks the full backs also did well and well done to Jack Goodyear,
Ben Maru and Ralph Andrews who were consistent all season. The
contribution of newcomer Kai Ponde at the end of the season should also be
noted.
In midfield Matt Lustig did superbly playing in the holding role and was one of
the major strengths all season. This allowed Joe Clayton to get forward at all
opportunities and support the front two whilst Ricky Hunnable and Morgan
Letchford did admirably down the flanks. It was also to see utility player Max
Hainsby step up to the plate when called upon.
Up front captain Chris Huggins was fantastic and his ability to chase loss
causes and create something out of nothing was evident all year. He was ably
supported by Isaac Cummings and Chris Anusi who shared the workload
throughout the year.
The season was ultimately very frustrating with the boys managing to miss out on
the Championship on goal difference. Even more exasperating was the cup final
where the lads narrowly missed out to a strong Highams Park team. Leading 2-1
with just seconds to go, the opposition equalised with virtually the last kick of the
game. In extra time, unfortunately Highams Park secured another goal to see us
lose 2-3. Despite the disappointment the boys should be proud of the progress
they made this year and this bodes well for the future.
Squad: A.Drew, J.Kelly, B.Maru, R.Andrews, B.Lantieri, B.Goodyear, M.Lustig,
M.Letchford, R. Hunnable, I. Cummings, J.Clayton, C.Huggins, K.Ponde,
C.Anusi, M. Hainsby, A.Adamson, C.Ku-Sumbu
Year 9
The squad approached the new season with a sense of reality but a
determination to improve from the season before. The Borough league in this
particular year group is a very strong one. With Heathcote, Highams Park and
Walthamstow Academy able to field particularly strong teams.
Although we knew Heathcote were strong we didn‟t expect to open our league
account with a 9-2 defeat. The boys just couldn‟t get into the game and whatever
Heathcote tried it worked for them although you had to take your hats off to them
as they looked an incredibly strong side.
Our next league game was against our other local rivals Highams Park, the boys
rose to the challenge and the game was much closer in the end we went down 20 but with a little bit of luck and some slightly better finishing we could have come
away from this game with something. These two defeats basically ended any
league hopes we had and so we had to concentrate on the cup. Our first cup
game was against Rushcroft and we took the confidence gained from the much
better display against Highams Park to come away with a resounding victory 8-0.
We then continued to but in some good solid displays gaining a 3-0 victory
against Lammas in the league and then moving smoothly through the next cup
round beating Holy Family College 4-1. The next league game was against
another of the good teams Walthamstow Academy we came away 2-1 victors but
that score line didn‟t tell the whole story it could have been by a few more as we
soundly beat them. Two league wins followed 6-0 against Leytonstone and 3-2
against Holy Family College leading us into the Borough Cup semi final in good
heart.
We had beaten Lammas in the league and felt we had a very good chance of
reaching the final. We played on the same pitch at Peter May as last years semi
final which we lost and from now on we will make sure we never play on there
again. In a hard fought close game where we never really showed any of our
class, perhaps the nerves got to us. We went down 2-1 with the fact that we were
not able to defend two Rory Delap style throw ins ultimately costing us.
Walthamstow Academy went on to win the cup which makes the Lammas defeat
even more galling as it was a very chance for us to win some silverware and we
basically blew it. There is always next season as they say.
In terms of Essex and London cups, we went out early in the Essex and put a
short run together in the London cup and we will be looking to go a further next
season.
The squad: L. Hurren, L. Griffiths, C. Clarke, J. Lindsay, J. Tibbets, M. Anyanwu,
C. Hassan, L Willock, D. Cabey, T. Luckie, J. Dice, T. Serman, M. Hanchard, M.
Scott Nicholson, C. Gardiner
Year 10
It was an extremely successful year for the year 10
football team. Coming in to the season after only
winning the borough cup and narrowly missing out
on the league the Chingford team certainly wanted
to walk away this year with trophies. We had an
excellent start to the season with Alex Mooney not
conceding a goal in the league for the first 3 games.
There were some additions to the squad with Ben
Fuller joining us after the trials and Ben Gordon
and Carl Hainsby featuring in a few games.
George Essuman slotted in at centre back this season doing an excellent job
alongside Alex Finney who was given the captain‟s armband. Mark Redhead
made the left back position his own having an excellent season. We won all
league games convincingly beating Kelmscott 9-0 Heathcote 2-0. We also
progressed to the semi-final of the borough cup and came up against Rushcroft.
Due to problems with the weather this year we had to play a double header
against Rushcroft. They also hadn‟t lost a game in the league. This crucial game
was to decide the league and who progressed on to the final of the borough cup.
Rushcroft played excellently and we lost 3-1.
We were however still in the Essex Cup. We had some really tough draws but it
seemed that this is where our success was going to come. We were drawn
Barking Abbey in the quarter final after full time it was 2-2. We went to extra time
and Jay Lantieri scored a magnificent free kick to make the game 3-2 and won
us a place in the semi-final. Playing Davenant we really came together for this
fixture as this team had knocked out the team who had got to the final of the
national competition. Elias Taki really did shine in this game showing pace, skill
and excellent technique. He was unstoppable and if there was an award, he
would have been given manager‟s player of the season. We won 2-0 and played
the final at West Ham academy against Billericay. This was a lovely occasion
and we felt confident going in to this game. We went 2-0 down early on and I
thought that the game was over. However, Elias managed to get one back before
half time showing great determination and team spirit. Sam wade came on at half
time really strengthening the back line and we got an equaliser early with Elias
setting up Elliot Donaldson. We looked solid at the back and kept pushing
forward. Elias was absolutely destroying their right back all game and he set up
another easy tap in for Elliot who also had an excellent game. I would also like to
mention Jay Lantieri‟s performance in the final because he was absolutely
excellent. We won the final of the Essex Cup 3-2. This has never been won
before in the history of the school. Well done boys, huge achievement.
Squad A. Mooney, S. Kelly, A. Kelly, R. Stratton, B. Fuller, B. Gordon, A. Finney,
S. Wade, A. Leachman, F. Lane, R. Richefond, E. Taki, E. Donaldson, C. Rowe,
G. Essuman, J. Lantieri, M. Redhead, C. Stanford.
Year 11
After 4 very successful years with this current squad, 2 double winning seasons
consisting of league and league cups, it was their final season together.
The first league fixture was against Fredrick bremmer, who are now a formidable
force after two schools joined together. After a very physical game, we managed
to get the break through in the second half, with a tricky run down the wing from
Kieran weal and a good delivery which was cleared, Marlon Joseph caught a
peach of a shot and scored to grab the winner. The next game was the start of
our Essex cup campaign on home soil at Peter May. This was a particularly hard
game, as the weather was really bad and the opposition, Saffron Walden, was of
good footballing pedigree. At full time it was 1-1 going into extra time then
penalties, resulting in a win for us 4-2 on penalties.
Highams Park was next on the league fixture list for us at Salisbury hall which
resulted in a 2-0 victory, Carl Young and Robert Gold having particular solid
games to ensure a clean sheet. Unfortunately an early exit in the third round of
the Essex cup was destined for the year 11‟s, with a 2-0 loss to King Johns.
The main derby of the year against Rushcroft was up next, this meeting is always
a difficult physical game. Rushcroft went 1-0 up in the first half, so all was to play
for in the second half. The true spirit of Chingford Foundation school shone
through, to give us a 2-1 victory, with Lewis Meyer grabbing the winner. Ryan
Blackwell arguably had the game of his season, making vital tackles.
Leytonstone, who usually give us a close fought game, were swept aside in a 2-0
victory, leaving the league decider down to the last match, which was away to
Heathcote. Unfortunately with key players missing it resulted in a 3-1 defeat. I
would like to thank all those players throughout the years who made it possible
for the team to run, and they will be sorely missed.
Squad: C.Young, A. Hamrahand, N.Roberts, R.Gold, M.Coleman, D.Shrimplin,
R.Ferguson, R.Blackwell, T.Nejat, L.Meyer, B. Odart, C. Hannaford, K.Weal,
M.Joseph, H.French, S.Yilmez.
6th Form
The sixth form‟s opening game was against Ruscroft, who are running a football
B-Tec football course in conjunction with Leyton Orient. They were a well oiled
machine and the lads suffered a heavy defeat but the feel of the our team spirit
was good, and I believed we would go on to bigger and better things for the rest
of the season.
Our Essex cup campaign started against Beal School away. Goals from Alex
Gordon, Alex Finley and Danny Hearty secured a 3-0 victory taking us into
round two.
The Next round we faced Caterham School, who were very physical, but once
again the Chingford spirit shone through to give us a 2-1 victory.
We managed to progress to the semi finals of the competition, where we faced a
strong Billericay side. After a hard fought match we lost 1-0, but subsequently
were put through to the final due to the opposition fielding 6 ineligible players.
Prior to the final, we had a warm-up game against Walthamstow Academy. Kane
Griffin had a particularly good game, along with Brian Ho and Jack Payne
resulting in a 6-0 victory in our favour.
The final, which was hosted at West Ham Academy, was the last game of the
season, a great end to fantastic two seasons for some of the boys. Unfortunately
this was not to be our day, losing to a particularly strong opposition, but never the
less a brilliant experience, and send off for a majority of the team.
As always I would like to say a special thanks to those who leave us - Chris
Constantinou, Alex Foss, Perry Williams, Danny Hearty, Alex Finley, Jack
Coker, Glen Rowle, and Kyri Tiritarou and we wish them well in their
footballing careers in the future. Particular mention must go to to Alex, Danny
and Jack who represented Chingford from years 7 to 11 and brought much
success over the years to the school.
Squad: C. Constantinou, A. Foss, P.Williamson, D. Hearty, A.Finley, J.Coker, G.
Rowle, A. Gordon, K Griffin, B.Ho, DJ Minors, K. Tiritarou, J Payne, P. Loshaj, I
Durowuju.
NETBALL
Yet again, the 2011 season was a highly successful one,
with numerous achievements for all age groups. In
Summary, the Waltham Forest Cup and League results
were as follows:
Year 7 League Runners-up
Year 8 League Winners
Year 9 League Winners and Cup Runners-up.
Last 16 in the Essex cup
Year 9 B Team League Runners-up
Senior League Winners
Year 7
After a slow start in the Essex cup competition; the Year 7 team developed with
every game and training session. Strong shooting from Olivia Sach and
impressive performances weekly from the injured Courtney Reid enabled the
team to develop confidence and gain some well earned victories, which included
7-0 against Forest Gate and a close 6-5 win against Heathcote.
Their impressive development stood them in good stead for the Waltham Forest
league and they finished a close runner up, gaining good wins along the way.
We were fortunate enough to field two teams giving us strength and depth to our
squad, and both teams finishing in the top five in the Borough.
Squad: C. Reid, O. Sach, H. West, L. Page, J.Adam, C. Cover, S.Childs,
A.Allen, S.Hussein, C.Cottle, E.Williams, G.Lawson, M. Bygraves, E. Sturt, E.
Adamson
.
Year 8
The Year 8 team had an outstanding season and are truly in a league of their
own. They finished the season as league champions without conceding a goal,
thanks to the strong defensive qualities of Lara Caldenk and Valentina Donati.
The attacking pairing of Bethany Frost and Casey Caldenk led the team to a
number of 20-0 victories. Charlotte Gordon and Bethany Frost also deserve a
special mention for being selected for the Essex County set-up and satellite
training. Bethany was also awarded the 2011 Netballer of the year for her
outstanding ability and commitment and hope a number of the team will complete
the first level of the young umpire award in the near future.
Squad: B.Frost, C.Gordon, L.Caldenk, C.Caldenk, V.Donati, R. Periera,
J.Robinson, T.Robinson, J. Tahir, M. Sach, N. Bendon.
Year 9
It was no surprise that having won the league in Year 7 and 8; that the Year 9
team went on to gain their third consecutive league win. The team continued to
dominate with resounding victories over all schools, including an 18-0 win over
Walthamstow School for Girls. The team also did themselves proud by reaching
the last 16 of the Essex Cup with a 23-17 victory over Great Baddow School. The
2nd team also did themselves proud by finishing as runners up in their league,
with some particularly strong defensive skills being displayed by the dynamic
Shani Mushington and Tia Hunter-Marsh.
Squad: L. Evans, B. Falana, S. Adair, A. Anusi, D. Eleftheriou, K. Georgiou, C.
Hudson, C. Kwakye, C. Marquis, T. Hunter-Marsh, S. Mushington, E. Roberts, L
Robertson-Brown, C. Robertson-Brown. M. Ubanska.
Year 10/11
The Senior squad finished as winners in the 2011 league, continuing their strong
and dominant run over the past five years. A special mention must be made of
Claire Huggins who for the past five years has shown commitment and has
excelled in a number of roles including player, coach and umpire. The junior
teams could not run without pupils like Claire assisting the PE staff in these vital
leadership roles.
Squad: C. Huggins, R. Watson, D. Gayle, L. Christou, L. West, J. Bontoft, S.
Hanotu, S. Hamilton.
BASKETBALL
Year 8
This is the first season these set of players have come
together, so it was an unknown equity, and their first test
was to be against Rushcroft, historically a strong
Basketball School. Our first game was at home and after
one of the lowest scoring games I have ever been
involved in, 12-12 at full time, the game went into overtime. This was a pressure situation for the team in their
first ever competitive game. Unfortunately it resulted in a
12-14 loss after 5 more minutes, one basket being the difference between
winning and losing.
Other similar games followed. Defensively we did well but could not score
enough baskets to secure victories. Low scoring defeats therefore against
Walthamstow Academy and Heathcote occurred leaving the final game of the
season against Highams Park playing for pride rather than a spot in the semis.
The match proved to be easily the best performance of the season and with
players enjoying a far better shot/basket success rate, Chingford ran out
comfortable winners. Indeed if the lads can improve in offence, things bode well
for the future as other aspects of play such as their defensive work, passing and
ball handling were certainly of a high standard.
Squad: M.Lustig, A. Drew, S. Britton, A Adamson, K.Campbell, C.Butler, L.
Lewis, T Green, A. Lecuyer, S. Prince, K. Ponde, D.Silcott, A. Adem,
B.Goodyear.
Year 9
The year 9 basketball team had another fantastic year winning the Borough Cup
for the second successive season.
The season started off pretty comfortably with wins against Norlington,
Walthamstow Academy and Frederick Bremer. We then had a wake up call after
a narrow defeat to Lammas. This was the first time the boys had suffered a loss
and it meant that the team realised that they had to step up training and
concentrate on fundamentals such as defending tougher and sinking lay ups!
The semi final produced a far better performance against Frederick Bremner and
the boys secured a relatively easy 20 point margin victory. This meant that the
boys would face Lammas in the final understanding that another top draw game
was needed.
The match was an exciting affair which ebbed and flowed. By the last quarter
Chingford were ten points in the lead but ran in to foul trouble which saw some of
our best players sitting on the bench rather than out on court! Fortunately the
team managed to hold on with a 43-40 victory and take the cup back to Nevin
Drive.
There were a number of fine performances throughout the season. Special
praise should be given to forwards Kavelle Browne and Miles CharlemagneTaylor who scored the majority of the points. At point guard Okkes Sulayici
was absolutely superb setting up many points for other players. Indeed his work
this year earned him the Clive Moore Lower School Basketballer of the year
award. Other notable students were Tyler Warriner-Prince, Kyle Wade, Joe
Gravesande, Matthew Hanchard, Blair Cuming, Nick Jackson and Stephen
Sturt who did very well.
Squad K.Browne, K.Wade, M.Charlemagne-Taylor, O.Sulayici, N.Jackson,
S.Sturt, J.Gravesande, B.Cuming, M.Hanchard, T.Warriner-Prince, K.Kartel,
J.Brown, K.Deen.
Year 10
It was a reasonably successful year for the year 10 basketball team. We had
some excellent additions to the squad which really strengthened the depth of it.
Any of the players in our squad could have made the starting 5. We were missing
our key player, George Essuman in most league games this season due to
commitments elsewhere but still won all of our league games. We beat
Heathcote in the league fixture but that the opposition used this game as a
practice game to come up with a game plan for when they were to come up
against us in the final. The final proved to be a very trough fixture. It was very
close at half time with only a couple of points in it. Unfortunately Alex Finney
was fouled out at the start of the third quarter and Heathcote started getting the
better of us. Trying to get our players fouled out seemed to be Heathcote‟s game
plan and fortunately for them it worked. They were very organised for this fixture
and it seemed they had put in a lot of time and effort. We ended up losing by 15
points and it was a valuable lesson for our basketball team and we hope to win
back our trophy this coming season.
Players: B. Gordon, G. Essuman, A. Finney, S Frost, R. Uhobo, R.Joao, J.
Stuart, H. Holdsworth, M. Redhead, A. Parker-Massop
Year 11
After promotion from division 2
into the top division, the boys
knew that it would be a far harder
prospect than last season. With
this in mind, the squad did very
well indeed finishing a respectful
mid-way in the league.
There were a couple of highlights
in the season particularly the
excellent 40-35 victory against a
strong Buxton side and the more
comfortable 32-14 success
against Forest. Indeed the latter
performance shows how much
progress the boys had made over
the years as previous matches
against Forest had been extremely
close affairs.
Well done to all the squad – it was
a real team effort.
Squad: T.Mapp, C.Young, M.Joseph, A.Hanchard, D.Sooruth, M.Moxey,
L.Meyer,
CROSS COUNTRY
The Borough Cross Country Championships were held on Chingford Plains on
Friday 15th October 2010. Chingford Foundation managed to field a team of 91

RUGBY UNION
In its second year, there were more than 100 pupils and students participating in
competitive matches against other schools. There were teams from Year 7
through to a newly established 1st XV for the Sixth Form.
Highlights of the year included a brilliant performance by the Year 9 team (ably
captained by Joseph Britton) in a knock-out tournament. Despite facing teams
with more experience (and size!), they played exceptionally well and only
narrowly missed out on a semi-final place.
Year 10 and Year 11 won their fixtures throughout the year and will be looking to
play a higher level of competition this year. The Year 10 team (captained by Sam
Frost) played a consistently determined game and the quality of passing, team
play and tactical awareness developed very well which bodes well for the coming
year.
The Sixth Form 1st XV had their first fixture against an experienced Oakes Park
team in a memorable and fiercely competitive match. With a large and voluble
crowd on the side line, most of the Chingford players were playing their first
competitive game of rugby. To their enormous credit, they won the game with a
last-gasp try to seal a first win. Special mention must go to Michael Christakis
as captain who led the team from the front. Many of the team were in Year 12
and as a result, we are expecting a stronger 1st XV in the coming year.
Many thanks to all the players who made such an effort to train and enjoyed
playing so much. Also, thanks to parents for dropping off and picking up players
as well as offering encouragement and support to a developing sport in the
school, and finally a big congratulations to Joseph Britton, Xavier Wilkinson,
Elliott Humphrey, George Bradley, Shane Priest, Ben Maru and Syrus
Nikbakht for their outstanding season.
CRICKET
This was a frustrating summer
with the weather washing out
many of our games and
opposition cancelling some of the
others as well. It left us with
probably less cricket being played
then previous years and with
players unable to hit top form
without consistent time in the
middle. However, two teams still
managed to reach the final of the Borough cups with the year 8s finishing
runners up whilst the year 9s game will have to be carried over due to the
weather until next year.
Year 7
It was a difficult year for the year 7 cricket team - it always is unless you have a
group of experienced cricket players. Most of the boys that made the team hadn‟t
played competitive cricket before or been to any kind of cricket training. One
thing I was impressed by with the boys was their commitment, effort and their
determination to improve. Our bowling actually proved to be of a good standard
whilst although the batting got better was not as consistent as needed.
We played Norlington in our first game who always have a strong cricket side
and this proved to be a test for us. We put up a good battle when fielding but they
bowled us out reasonably quickly. Other similar results followed until the last
match against Highams Park. We batted and bowled extremely well gaining our
only victory of the season. I‟m sure the boys will improve coming in to year 8 and
I expect us to have a more successful season this time round.
George Rapley was named as captain and put in some excellent bowling
performances along with Azahah Shah. Jack Lay showed fanatastic fielding
skills along with Teddy Johnson who both made some excellent catches. Toby
Edwards proved a good all rounder and also showed excellent throwing power.
Josh Coster played well at wicket keeper having had no experience playing
there before. Daniel Codling came in late to the side and showed he was a
superb bowler and strengthened our squad significantly. Let‟s hope next year is a
successful one.
Squad A. Shah, O. Clarke, P. Athithan, G. Rapley, T Johnson, N. Casinil, A.
Rizvi, J. Lay, T Edwards, J Coster, C Cox, N. Reehan, Z.Akbar, D. Codling
Year 8
The year 8s had a similar season to last year just narrowly missing out on the
Borough cup losing in the final. Easy victories against Rushcroft, Highams Park
and Norlington meant that despite a narrow defeat against Frederick Bremner we
still managed to qualify from our league.
There were some top performances with newcomer Ali Rizvi staring with the bat
along with all rounders Matthew Smith, Eric Boisson, Nathan Frost and Albie
Drew. The bowling potential of Ben Haggett should also not be over-looked
whilst Corey Tipper, Ben Goodyear and Alex Lecuyer also show great
potential.
The final was against Leytonstone. Going in to the game it was slightly worrying
because the team had had less time in the middle than we had wished and to be
honest we did not do ourselves justice in any parts of the game. Batting first we
probably scored ten to twenty runs short of a “par” score collecting 89 for 4 off
our twenty overs and did not push enough quick singles. In the field we dropped
a couple of crucial catches and gave a few too many wides away and lost by four
wickets with 9 balls to spare. Indeed the dropped catches proved crucial as two
of their batsmen who had “lives” went on to make decent runs.
All in all despite the
frustrations, the good news
is that the boys are clearly
a good squad with all the
fundamentals in place.
The lads should also be
congratulated for the hours
of practice carried out.
Next year the aim must be
to go one better and take
the winners medals!
Squad: M.Smith, N.Frost, E.Boisson, A.Drew, B.Haggett, A.Rizvi, A.Lecuyer,
C.Tipper, T.Green, C.Huggins, L.Eves, Z.Charalambous, B. Goodyear, A.Adem,
J.Cefai.
Year 9
Despite less time out on the square this year due to a number of cancellations,
the boys still managed to make it to the Borough final although this was
postponed a number of times due to the rain.
After a bye in the first round of the Essex Cup, the season started with a second
round County Cup match against an outstanding Brentwood team. Unfortunately
the opposition proved too strong and we lost quite heavily.
The league saw us win all games with some excellent performances. With the
bat, the pick of the bunch was undoubtedly Kasey Harris’ century – Indeed, his
109 not out against Rushcroft was the first three figure individual score in recent
memory and went towards earning him the accolade of John Dowle Cup and
lower school cricketer of the year.
With the ball a feature of the season was the excellent and improving off spin of
Humzah Shakil who at times was almost unplayable and who collected a “5 fer”
against Highams Park this summer. If the spinner can find a little more
consistency then he will prove to be a great asset. Other useful performances
with bat or ball came from Jake Tibbitts, Dominic Smith, Shere Hussain, Max
Nicholson-Scott, John Lindsay whilst the work behind the stumps with the
gloves by Ted Lindsay should also be noted.
The final against Kelmscott will be carried over to April in year 10 and we look
forward to retaining the cup next summer.
Squad: H.Shakil, J.Tibbitts, D.Smith, K.Harris, E.Lindsay, J.Lindsay,
H.Whitewood, S.Hussain, M. Nicholson-Scott, J.Dice, L Griffiths, T.Luckie
Year 10
This year we probably under-achieved, with two defeats in the group stages of
the tournament. Although the first game to a very strong Norlington side did not
come as too much of a shock, the other loss against a re-vitalised Rushcroft was
not expected a and a bit of a “body blow” with batsmen getting out too cheaply
rather than play themselves in.
Despite a couple of other victories, the lads could not qualify which was
somewhat disappointing. There were some very good individual performances
again this year with captain Ben Gordon, Will Evans, Harry Houldsworth, Sam
Frost, Jack Rhodes and Edward Carroll all doing well with either bat or ball at
some stage.
I am also delighted that so many of the squad are playing outside of school and
representing clubs in either colts or 3rd XI men‟s
standard already. This bodes well and with a little bit
more consistency from these lads I am sure that they
will do well for the years to come. Lastly, throughout
their four years the boys have been a credit to
themselves and the school and I wish them well in their
cricketing future.
Squad; B. Gordon, H.Houldsworth, W.Evans, S.Frost,
T.Hackett, E.Carroll, J. Rhodes, R.Richefond.

SCHOOL TEAMS
This summer was to prove a vintage year of athletics. In the leagues, all boys‟
teams won the team events whilst the girls faired only slightly worse with three
titles and one runners up. This complemented the indoor athletics leagues where
both the boys and the girls won both the year 7/8s and 9/10 competitions. In the
prestigious Borough Championship, all four girl‟s teams won making it a fantastic
clean sweep. A superb feat! The boy‟s year 9 team also won the event whilst
the other three year groups all finished in second place. As in previous years, it
was pleasing to gain medals in all disciplines – sprints, middle distances, throws
and jumps. All in all the school brought back an amazing 53 medals more than
any other school at the event which comprised of 16 local schools.
It was also particularly satisfying that Chingford were again invited to participate
in the celebrated Forest Boy’s School Pentathlon Invitation which again included
the illustrious institution Eton as one of our competitors! This alone shows the
superb athletics reputation that our school carries around these parts. With an
extremely tough field it was extremely pleasing that the year 9s won the event
with Tariq Forde and Kavelle Browne gaining individual gold and silver
respectively. The year 10 team finished in second place with Alex Finney
picking up the individual gold medal.
Year 7
Both the boys and girls had excellent first seasons with one league success, one
Borough Championship, one runner up league and one runner up Borough
Championship being collected.
There were some superb individual performances during the rain affected
Borough Championships. On the track, for instance congratulations to Teddy
Johnson who won the 1500 metres whilst also gaining a bronze medal in the
field with the long jump. Denzil Williams claimed first place in the high jump and
second place in the 800 metres whilst Jordon Bailey finished first and third in
the hurdles and triple jump respectively. Both Denzil and Jordon along with Sam
Higgs and Brandon Brown were also part of the silver medal relay team which
came in second just behind Frederick Bremner.
Although just missing out on a medal the contribution of Lewis Barlow and
Michael Duberry should be acknowledged.
In the girl‟s event, the team were extremely consistent. Well done to Coutney
Reid (100m), Harriet Kelly (1500m), Tiegan Foster (hurdles), D’onyx Mvunda
(javelin) who all picked up silver medals. In the 200 metres Ella Adamson
secured third place and a bronze medal and was also part of the gold medal
winning relay team which also included Emma Sturt, Ruth Lubaki and
Courtney Reid.
With other notable performances from athletes such as Rose Bailey, Lucy
Paige, Sophie Odart and Hayley West it meant that the girls won the
championship by 5 points from Forest. An excellent achievement!

Year 8
The year 8s won both league events with the girls also claiming the Borough
Championship and the boys finishing in second place.
Probably the best individual year 8 performance came
from Jaide Robinson who secured a gold in both the
triple jump and 300 metres. She was also part of the
bronze medal relay team which also consisted of the
twins Lara and Casey Caldenk along with Jordana
Foster. It was not to be the only success which Jordana
gained as she picked up medals in the hurdles (gold) and
long jump (silver). Well done also to 1500 metre runner
Joelle Ewen whose time of 5 minutes 46 seconds
smashed the rest of the field by nearly 25 seconds. Other
great results came in the throws where Chingford picked
up medals in all three disciplines. Emma Wallis (gold in
the javelin), Val Donati (silver in the discus) and Irsah
Dar (bronze in the shot putt) all deserve special mention.
In the boys competition there were three gold medal performances.
Congratulations to Morgan Letchford who won the high jump, Tom Howard
who finished first in the 800 metres and Ben Maru who won the javelin for the
second consecutive year with his superb throw of over 33 metres. Last but by no
means least, in the 300 metres Ben Goodyear secured a third place and bronze
medal and a valuable 8 points for the team.
Although they did not pick up a medal the contributions throughout the summer
of Matthew Lustig, Taylor Robinson, Matthew Smith, Dominic Silcott, Laura
Cooper, Lauren Straker, Albie Drew, Kai Ponde and Bryce Toussaint should
all be noted.
Squad: L.Dearman, T.Howard, L.Moore, L.Straker, D.Silcott, E.Wallis,

Year 9
Both the boys and the girl‟s teams won the Borough Championship and leagues
making it a celebrated Chingford double double.
On the track it
was a special
day for our
female sprinters
who won golds in
three of the four
events.
Congratulations
to Chelsea
Kwakye (100
metres),
Barbara Falana
(200 metres) and
Georgina
Gouch (300
metres) who all
ran in first. The
three ladies then
combined devastatingly along with Daniella Eleftheriou in the 4 x 100 metre
relay to just pip Connaught girls by 0.4 of a second in a thrilling race. Some of
the relay squad also picked up medals in the field events. Daniella and Chelsea
for instance gained silver in the javelin and long jump respectively whilst Barbara
went one better gaining another gold in the triple jump.
There were also some magnificent performances by the boy‟s. One of the most
pleasing was the 4 x 100 metre relay team whose time of 47.6 seconds smashed
the field by nearly four seconds. Well done to Kavelle Browne, Kyle Wade, Joe
Gravesande and Tariq Forde who made up the quartet. All four of these
runners were also to feature in the individual events and picked up medals. Joe
claimed first place in the long jump, Kavelle first in both the high jump and 200
metres, Kyle first in the 100 metres and Tariq gold in thhe hurdles and silver in
the javelin. Indeed, Tariq’s three medals at the Championship, plus his work
during the league meets and individual gold in the Forest pentathlon earned him
the Stanton Cup and lower school athlete of the year.
This was not to be the only medals won. Congratulations also to Miles
Charlemagne-Taylor who claimed two bronze medals in the 400 metres and
shot putt, Tom Luckie who received a silver in the 1500 metres and George
Child who also finished second in the discus.
Throughout the summer there were some other fine performers who deserve
special mention. These include Kali Georgiou, James Luckie, Sevin
Crawford, Charlotte Eves, Chiara Marquis, Alexi Anusi who all picked up
valuable points for the team.
Squad: C.Joseph, J.Rouchy, A.Anusi, C.Roberts-Brown, L.Roberts-Brown,

Year 10
Both boys and girl‟s teams won their respective leagues with the girls claiming
another first in the Borough Championship and the boys another runners up spot
in their competition.
Probably the best performance from a female athlete
came from Laura West in the javelin. Her throw of over
22 metres gave her first place and ensured one better
than last year‟s silver medal. Other medal winning
deeds came from Rachel Pereria (third in 300 metres),
Leah Christou (second in the hurdles), Dallas Gayle
(second in the long jump), Priscille Yombo (second in
the high jump) and Paige Nicholson-Scott (third in the
triple jump). The school also secured a third in the relay
with the quartet of Dallas, Leah, Sienna Blake and Jazmine Adem.
In the boys events there were two gold medal performances. Ryan Richefonde
secured first place in the 400 metres by over two seconds whilst Alex Finney’s
massive leap in the high jump of 1.81 metres devastated the rest of the field and
was arguably one of the best feats of the day bearing in mind the rain affected
and slippery conditions. Alex also gained third place in the hurdles to complete a
satisfying day‟s work and another eight points for the school.
The throws proved to be a particularly strong part of the boy‟s team. Mason
Poppy (third in the javelin), Jake Withers (third in the shot putt) and George
Essuman (second in the discus) all picked up medals. Well done also to Carl
Hainsby whose time of 2 minutes 20 seconds meant a silver medal in the 800
metres.
There were some other notable performers all summer. Congratulations to
Brendon Killeen, Paolo Moraldo, Jessica Panayiotou and Katie Hare for their
work this season.
Squad: J.Adem, A.Finney, F.Lane, J.Panayiotou, M.Poppy, R.Priest, S.Blake,

DANCE SHOWCASE
This annual event hosted and run by Chingford Foundation School, traditionally
involved pupils in Key Stages 4 and 5 from the school going in to local primary
schools to deliver after school dance clubs for 6 weeks prior to a performance,
was opened up this year to include choreographers from both primary [year 6]
and secondary schools [including Key Stage 3]from the Waltham Forest Northern
School Sports Partnership. Choreographers came from pupils in years 6-12.
Pupils from 9 schools performed. The event was well supported by parents and
friends. Arts and sports projects in partnership within the school made this event
possible.
EAST LONDON DANCE „ON THE MOVE PROJECT‟
Funding was achieved for a group of year 7, 8 and 9 pupils to work with a Street
dance choreographer called Dean. Initially the project lasted for 10 sessions, but
additionally funding allowed the project to go on for a further 8 weeks. Sessions
lasted for both the Autumn and Spring terms.
