What to see
Gipuzkoa:
eat, see and
live it )
Practical
information
And so we are inviting you to get to know
our province with your eyes and also
with your hands and your palate, inviting
you to dip your glass into a cider house,
find out the whys and wherefores of
Idiazabal cheese and indulge your body
in the myriad of sensations that our most
famous chefs have prepared for you.

ACCOMMODATION

This land has the ability to make an
indelible mark on anyone visiting it. You
can see for yourself when you discover
our landscapes, perpetually green and
varied enough to suit all tastes. We are
inviting you to discover them all, from
the coastline with its pleasant beaches,
the romantic cliffs, the woods that wear
a different look each season, the bucolic
meadows and the mountains that just
cry out to be visited. It’s equally easy
to travel around on foot and by bike to
really feel at one with the environment.

Ongi etorri, welcome to Gipuzkoa, to this
welcoming, compact yet widely varying
land. Welcome to a place where we feel
passionate about our knives and forks,
plates and glasses because they bring
us closer to a gastronomic culture that
has represented us for decades and
gives us a great sense of pride. Eating in
Gipuzkoa is not just a biological need,
but a real pleasure: a celebration of
friendship, an art and enjoyment for the
senses.
Iñaki Galdos Irazabal
County Councillor
for Sports and
External Action.
We also have thousand year old stones
and dolmens, medieval buildings and
Renaissance treasures, all types of
museums, visitors’ centres and themed
routes: historical routes such as the
Three Temples; modern routes following
work by the sculptor Eduardo Chillida;
winemaking involving tasting Txakoli
from Getaria; underground through
caves concealing artistic treasures...
And then we have the local people who
will receive you with open arms and
smiling faces. Ongi etorri, welcome
again. Enjoy, take a look, live this
experience, eat... it’s always a pleasure.

Road map )
S
ituated on the Atlantic axis of the Gulf of
Biscay, Gipuzkoa is the least extensive
one of the historical territories belonging
to the Basque Autonomous Community. Its
2,000 square kilometres are crisscrossed by
the 6 main rivers (Bidasoa, Oiartzun, Urumea,
Oria, Urola and Deba), which spring from the
mountains, flow through the valleys where
industrial areas have grown, and empty into
the sea, where the most important coastal
enclaves are located. Cliffs created by erosion,
extensive beaches and fishing ports of
renowned tradition alternate along Gipuzkoa’s
86 kilometres of coastline. In contrast to this
blue Gipuzkoa, the green colour and its natural
beauty define the inland.
There is also an industrial as well as a rural
Gipuzkoa. Small and medium-sized companies
dominate the first, where iron works and
metallurgy is the most important sector,
followed by cement and paper mills. The rural
area has hardly undergone any changes.
Cultural traditions and Basque Folklore survive
here, as does the Basque language, the native
tongue of a high percentage of the population.
The Service Sector is this small and diverse
area’s main business.

The Sailing Club steps, next to the port of San Sebastian, are popular among swimmers.
San
Sebastian )
The firm favourite
This is where we find the two oldest
temples in San Sebastian: the Baroque
St Mary’s Basilica that houses the patron
saint, Our Lady of the Choir; and St
Vincent’s, a Gothic block with five centuries
of history, decorated with enigmatic
gargoyles. Next to this we find the former
convent of St Telmo, a 16th century work that
has been recently renovated and turned
into a modern historical and ethnography
museum. Several paths leave the Old Town
leading up Mount Urgull, the city’s main set
of lungs and an immense park that is really
best explored in small doses, offering up
the military ruins and magical spots such as
the English Cemetery.
Build around the shelter of the Concha Bay, San Sebastian casts a spell on you like
no other city. This fisherman’s city, chosen by kings and queens for their summer
holidays, is a real tourist treat, enhanced by the refined 19th century buildings, its
musical programme, its passion for culture and, of course, its close relationship
with nature. San Sebastian can be felt but also read about and walked through and
it moulds itself into anyone visiting it, like a fine silk glove. The capital of Gipuzkoa
also highlights many of the virtues of this land where the mountains meet the
Cantabrian Sea.
I
t is never difficult to describe San Sebastian as a
city adorned with three mountains, three beaches,
an island and a river. Beyond its natural beauty,
the capital of Gipuzkoa has also forged its own charm,
thanks to its enviable architecture, quality of life and
gastronomic reputation.
Constitution Square is its epicentre, a wide gated space
that was a bull ring in former times and currently hosts
the largest event in the local calendar: the raising of
the flag on the Day of San Sebastian – the popular
Tamborrada-, at midnight between 19th and 20th January.
Ensanche
Beyond the imaginary boundary of
the Boulevard we find the 19th century
‘ensanche’ or suburb as it was at the time,
from when San Sebastian became one of
the most important tourist destinations
in the south of Europe, in hot competition
with Biarritz or Nice. Priority is given here
to solid, carved, sandstone buildings; with
welcoming arcades and a series of buildings
with contrasting architectonic power such
as the Local Government building, the
María Cristina hotel or the Victoria Eugenia
Theatre.
Urumea
River Urumea is another gem that makes San
Sebastian unique. Walks along and across
its banks show a very different side to the
city, crossing monumental bridges such as
the Maria Cristina bridge, and passing the
modernist buildings on the Paseo del Árbol
de Gernika or the villas along the Paseo de
Francia. The jewel in the river’s crown is the
Kursaal Centre, designed by Rafael Moneo
and built in 1999 helping to modernise one
of the youngest, freshest districts in the city
centre: Gros. Blessed with the best beach,
Gros has a characteristic surfing atmosphere
all along the Zurriola Paseo. In summer, this
spot is full of lively terrace bars and hides
some of the best viewpoints to watch the
sun go down.
If San Sebastian can be proud of anything,
it should be its sea walks. Not only is it
possible to walk – or run or cycle – along
almost five kilometres of coastline, but you
can also take in artistic monuments such
as Eduardo Chillida’s Peine del Viento or
the Kursaal Centre, panoramic views and
all the beaches. Even when the sky is dark
and angry, take a walk along Paseo Nuevo
and imitate the townspeople’s favourite
pastimes: watching the waves smashing
into and jumping over the dykes.

Old Town
Its ancient soul is hidden in the Old Town, also the
district where we find the most pincho bars. Although
it burnt down almost completely in a fire in 1813, it was
reconstructed by copying the old grid of streets
The Boulevard is the liveliest street in town
separating the ‘old’ town from the ‘new’.
This was where the old walls ran enclosing
the town. At one end we find the Brecha
Market, around which homesteaders still
sell their market garden produce. At the
other end we find the Town Hall – first built
as a sumptuous casino – and the Alderdi
Eder gardens that have been an oasis of
peace and beauty for the last century.
The romantic zone has several hearts that
bring it to life. One of them is Gipuzkoa
Square, a pretty little English-style park
with exotic trees and a lake that is home to
ducks and swans. Another is Buen Pastor
Square, built at the same time as the
Neogothic Cathedral with its tall, slim spire
standing over 80 metres high. Very close to
this we find St Martin’s market and a lively
collection of pedestrian streets (Loyola,
Getaria, San Marcial, etc.) where most of
the city’s shops are concentrated.

Mount Igueldo
3 / Miramar Palace.
3/
Miramar Palace
The regent Queen María Cristina chose
this privileged hill that divides the beaches
of La Concha and Ondarreta, to build this
palace where the royal court would spend its
summers. The building was erected in British
style, and today its gardens are open for
people to stroll through, among the students
of the UPV Summer Courses (University of the
Basque Country).

4/
Buen Pastor Cathedral
Aiete Park
The Amusement Park of Mount Igeldo
preserves the old-time charm of its past. After
a short ride up the from the area of Ondarreta
aboard the funicular, which has been working
since 1912, the youngest children can ride
ponies while the older ones can ride the roller
coaster, the Labyrinth or the Mysterious River.
The tower houses an exhibition on the history
of San Sebastian, and one can enjoy excellent
views over the bay.
2/
Peine del Viento or “Wind
Comb”
One of San Sebastian’s most magical spots is
at the tip of the western coast.
Three iron sculptures by Eduardo Chillida
integrate themselves in the landscape grasping
the rocks that are frequently beaten by the
ocean waves. The surrounding area, designed
by Luis Peña Ganchegui manages to unite the
visitor with Chillida’s art and the sea.

11/
City Hall
Aquarium
Located in between the Old Town, the Alderdi
Eder Gardens, the Boulevard and the Bay of La
Concha, this splendid building was built in
1882 to house the Grand Casino and its
dazzling halls. After gambling was outlawed in
the forties, it became the City Hall. The original
grand dance floor is now the assembly hall.
The San Sebastian Aquarium is one of the most
modern in Europe. It is home to numerous
marine species such as rays and the popular
sharks Txuri and Kontxita, swimming in an
oceanarium crossed by an acrylic tunnel. Over
5000 species live in the variety of tanks in what
is also known as the Sea Palace and in a tactile
pool where some of the living specimens can be
touched.
9/
“Paseo Nuevo”
Real Sociedad Museum
Situated in the Anoeta Stadium, the Real
Sociedad Museum sums up one hundred
years of the club’s history. Visitors can
access audiovisual resources and discover
objects owned by the club or provided by
sportspersons and fans: from an original
bench and cushion from Atotxa, to players’
shirts, balls and tickets to memorable
matches.
12/
Located in the middle of the Old Town,
the museum has reopened its doors after
a thorough renovation. The 16th century
former Dominican convent has been
refitted and extended with a vanguard
building, offering a new view of our society.
Don’t miss the exhibition housing the
archaeological, ethnographic, documentary
and artistic collections in the museum
accompanied by audiovisuals from the
best creators on the Basque scene, plus an
ambitious programme of activities.
Architect Rafael Moneo described the
translucent cubes that he designed to be built at
the outlet of the Urumea River as “two beached
rocks” Located just above Zurriola beach, the
Auditorium and the Congress Hall is host to a
good deal of San Sebastian’s cultural events.

7/
Designed by the Frenchman Pierre Duccase at
the end of the 19th century, Aiete Park is the
most beautiful and extensive monumental
garden. It is located five minutes from the
centre of San Sebastian and the sumptuous
palace that presides over the park, Franco’s
former summer residence, houses the House
for Peace and Human Rights. Don’t miss the
flower beds, the lakes and a humid wood with
sequoias, magnolias, oak and yew trees.
13/
8/
Its 75 metre high tower is visible from most of
San Sebastian. El Buen Pastor, or “Good
Shepherd”, presides over the city centre in its
neo-gothic style. It is part of a group of similar
buildings such as the Koldo Mitxelena Cultural
Centre and the Post Office.
Surrounded by the seat of the County council
of Gipuzkoa and other porticoed buildings
since 1885, this grand square hides great
many attractions. A small botanical garden, a
duck pond, a meteorological and astronomical
pavilion, a floral clock, and a tribute to the
musician Usandizaga are all grouped within
one charming area.
8 / City hall.
10 / Constitution Square.
This seaside walkway that encircles Mount
Urgull is the ideal point to enjoy the sunset.
Near the port, the monumental-scale
reproduction of Jorge Oteiza’s Construcción
vacía, or “Empty Construction”, and the
Aquarium are worthwhile sights.
10/
Constitution Square
For centuries, San Sebastian was a walled city.
It was limited to what is now the Parte Vieja,
or “Old Town” and it is still the heart of the
city. An infinite number of bars and restaurants
share the narrow streets between the
Boulevard and Mount Urgull with the graceful
Plaza de la Constitución and the churches of
San Vicente and Santa María.

Hondarribia, located at the mouth of the River Bidasoa, has one of the

The coastline
of wonders
Hondarribia has a fishing heart in La Marina
district where some of the best seafood
dishes in Euskadi are served. Their fame has
even reached the New York Times that praised
the virtues of its restaurants and pincho bars
in 2010. At cape Higuer there is a beautiful
lighthouse that, decades ago, bore witness
to a singular event: under its waters there
are significant Roman remains that had been
dragged there along the River Bidasoa. They
come from Irun where the Romans set up
twenty centuries ago. To see how they buried
their dead, you have to visit the hermitage of
St Elena, whose floor houses a necropolis.
When you visit Irun, it is not rare to find
pilgrims walking to Santiago de Compostela
along the coastal route. Many of them stop off
to visit the church of Our Lady of the Juncal
and take a look at one of the oldest virgins in
Gipuzkoa, dating from the 12th century.
Sixty kilometres of coastline hold many wonders in store. No doubt about it,
the Gipuzkoa Coast is a treasure trove overflowing with fishing villages offering
idyllic atmospheres, gastronomic seafood delights or amazingly unique natural
spots. From the simplicity of a beach such as Zumaia, to the beauty of a town
such as Mutriku, there’s barely a spot that you will not fall in love with at first
sight. You have been warned.
O
ur route along the coast starts at Gipuzkoa’s ‘finis
terrae’. Where everything ends: the place where
we find Euskadi’s last village, Hondarribia; the
last cape, Higuer, and the last river, Bidasoa.
Txingudi Bay
Beyond it there is Iparralde, the North Basque Country.
Due to this proximity to neighbouring land, Hondarribia
Our next stop is a town hidden under a
thick layer of industry, Errenteria. Despite
the growth it underwent in the second half
of the 20th century, it preserves a pretty
pedestrianised historical centre. It boasts
two buildings with unequivocal military
architecture: the tower-houses of Morrontxo
and Torrekua, displaying a lot of wall and
few windows, designed to keep out enemies
since medieval times. In the parish church of
Our Lady of the Assumption, you should take
the time to look at the ‘Animas’ Altarpiece, a
curiosity from Flanders.
Pasai Donibane is one of the pleasant
surprises along this route: a fishing village
that only has one street. This street is very
long, rising and falling with tunnels and
bends but it is just one street from start
to finish. It is so unusual that the French
novelist Víctor Hugo praised it endlessly in
his book entitled “The Pyrenees”. The best
part of Pasai Donibane is its walks leading
to the northern mouth of the estuary or
rising to the St Ana Hermitage to get great
views of the port.
Another of the bay’s great attractions
consists of taking a motor boat between
Pasai Donibane and Pasai San Pedro, also
set out around a single sombre yet genuine
street. On leaving Pasaia Bay, the Gipuzkoa
coast opens up to reveal San Sebastian.
Beyond the capital, Mount Igeldo and
Mendizorrotz (the road that cross this
mountain is much more beautiful than the
motorway or the N-634) will accompany us
as far as the next chunk of coast.
Urola coast
Locals in Orio are experts at preparing a
particularly tasty grilled sea bream. The
Town is also famous for its ‘arrantzales’ –
fishermen in the Basque language – who
in 1901 captured the last great whale in
the Cantabrian Sea. They will celebrate
this event on 14th May 2011, Whale Day.

has always been considered a courageous city. Why?
Its location on the natural border – it is only separated
from France by Txingudi Bay – has kept it on the alert for
centuries. It also means that its main monuments have
strong links to the art of war: there are the sections of
the city walls that are still standing; the slim St Mary’s
gate; Carlos V castle or the Armas square that opens up
next to it.
There are two ways of leaving the land of
Txingudi: along the coast, driving along the
road up Mount Jaizkibel (with impressive
views) or along the N-I. If you choose the
latter, stop off in Oiartzun, a typical rural
Basque village with a pretty historical centre
although the buildings in its surrounding
area are particularly charming. It is always
surprising to come across large fortified
towers such as Iturriotz or Pagoaga in such
a green and bucolic landscape. You could
alternately follow the route of the megalithic
monuments.
Pasaia Bay
After almost 20 kilometres, Monte Jaizkibel
drops down next to Pasaia Bay, taking in
several towns that should not be missed.
Lezo was built at the foot of the mountain:
a tiny village with one foot in the sea
and the other in the country. It is worth
taking a look at some of the homesteads
in the town whilst you drive through
the bucolic meadows either side of the
GI-2638 connecting up with the top of
Gaintxurizketa. Many visitors come here to
see the beardless Christ, of unknown origin,
standing in the Basilica of Christ.
13
The coastal towns of Gipuzkoa play host to the ‘trainera regattas’ in the summer, followed by many fans of this traditional Basque sport.
On 30th June every year, Irun holds the San Marcial Parade,
its major festival.
Tourist
Offices
Orio is a strange fishing port because the
village faces the mountains not the sea: it
is sheltered in the river that bears its name,
safe from frequent squalls out at sea. The
best idea is to walk around the port and
then climb the hill along the Goiko Kale.
Before reaching Zarautz, there is an
obligatory stop on the road: in Aia. This
town with privileged views over the
Cantabrian Sea is a box of surprises.
Visitors will discover the church of St
Stephen, the Aizpeako Andra Maria
Hermitage or the many secrets hidden in
the Pagoeta Natural Park.
Zarautz can boast the longest beach in the
Basque Country. If the surf’s up, it will be
easy to spot several surfers trying to ride
the waves as some of the first pioneers
of this sport in Euskadi emerged here
way back in the 1960s. Nowadays it hosts
international surfing championships.
Zarautz also has a beautiful old town
including the Luzea Tower – medieval and
invincible – or the Palacio de Narros which
is said to be haunted.
Strolling through the lanes of Getaria is
a pleasure as all lead to the same place:
the port, although to get there you have
to go through a tunnel under the Gothic
church of San Salvador. Extend your stroll
if possible as far as Mount San Antón – the
actual name of the mouse – and up to the
lighthouse. By the way, the Getaria fish
restaurants, with their grills on the street,
are world famous.
Flysch Route
When the Cantabrian Sea gets angry,
it releases storms that are every bit as
beautiful as they are furious. Knowing this,
Zumaia searched for shelter to settle in the
mouth of a river – in this case the Urola. The
village therefore has such a curious shape,
with its old part on one side – the tower that
stands out is from St Peter’s church; and
the beaches on the other. Once you have
seen them, they are hard to forget. This
happened to the painter Ignacio Zuloaga
who commissioned his house to be built
on Santiago beach: his home and gardens
are currently a museum open to the public.
Itzurun Beach has another very different
attraction: the coastal flysch, meaning the
many layers of rock that are uncovered
when the water withdraws, making it
possible to read the geological age of the
Earth. The Algorri Visitors’ Centre explains
all about this phenomenon.
The arrival at Deba is worth framing: after
several kilometres of bends and slopes, the
road comes back to overlook the sea and,
suddenly, this village appears behind a wide
beach, dotted with summer villas. Centuries
ago, it was an important trading port – this
is where Castilian wool set sail for Flanders
– and it was this economic bonanza that
helped it to raise its main treasure: the
gothic temple for St Mary whose facade still
maintains its original colours today.
Mutriku is the end point on the Gipuzkoa
coastline, before the road enters Bizkaia.
There are two buildings that catch
everyone’s eye: the parish church of Our
Lady of the Assumption that looks like a
Greek temple stolen from Athens and the
tall, slim Berriatua Tower, one of the few
buildings saved from the fire that destroyed
the town in 1553. Almost everything in
Mutriku is a reflection of the Cantabrian
Sea and its produce, such as fish preserves
– this tradition is memorialised in the
Bentalekua Museum – or the fossils that
were extracted from its waters, exhibited in
the Nautilus Museum.

The section of the N-634 leading west is
delightful: it runs barely a couple of metres
above sea level. Many of the mountains
in this area are carpeted by txakoli vines,
a young, white wine with Protected
Denomination of Origin, offering a fantastic
accompaniment for seafood or fish. A
mouse – yup, a giant mouse – in the shape
of a mountain tells us that we have arrived
in Getaria, the home town of two people
that revolutionised history: Juan Sebastián
Elcano who completed the first and pyrrhic
journey around the world and the fashion
designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, known
as the “Prince of Fashion”. A spectacular
museum has been built for the latter that
will open in summer 2011.

Oiasso Roman Museum
The exceptional Old Town of Hondarribia
has been declared monument of artistic and
historical interest for its houses, emblazoned
with their coats of arms, small palaces and
unique buildings. A walk down Kale Nagusia,
with its spectacular gables, will take you to
the plaza de Armas, a square with plenty of
history, dominated by the solid Castle of the
Emperor Charles V, now a parador (stateowned hotel).
The Bidasoa River lets out into the Txingudi
Bay, surrounded by the towns of Irun,
Hondarribia and Hendaia. Here we find a rich
ecosystem. The Txingudi Ekoetxea centre
for research, with its bird observatory, is the
point of departure to explore the swamps and
other habitats of Plaiaundi to which we can
add the recently recovered Jaizubia marshes
(padurak) in Hondarribia.
The Oiasso Roman Museum is an archaeology
centre gathering the Roman remains
discovered in the surroundings of the city
of Oiasso. Its main aim is to make the area’s
archaeological heritage known.

Shrine of Guadalupe
The image of the Virgin of Guadalupe,
worshipped by the people of Hondarribia since
as early as the sixteenth century, is preserved
within a hermitage located on the way up
Mount Jaizkibel from Hondarribia. The splendid
panoramic views crown the visit.
Church of Our Lady of
Juncal
The one hundred years it took to build
this huge church in Irun is apparent in the
combination architectural styles (late gothic,
Basque gothic and Baroque). Guipuzkoa’s
most ancient image of the Virgin Mary, a
carved figure of the Virgin of Juncal, presides
its altarpiece. Declared National HistoricArtistic Monument.

galleries are some of the few that have been
worked almost uninterruptedly since 2,000
years ago. The setting of the mine land has
been recovered after 20 years of inactivity.

Within the Lau Haizeta Park and over the
Borough of Oarsoaldea we find this natural
viewpoint with an exceptional panoramic view
of the Basque coast and the sea of mountains
stretching away inland. The fort, built in 1888
on a former military location, is currently
an attractive play-cultural area. It recreates
the military activity by means of replicas of
machine guns, canons, etc.
12 / Irun-Oiartzun. Aiako Harria Natural Park.
The Ondartxo Maritime Culture Centre, located
in Pasaia next to the former Jaizkibel stream
dredger, brings craft techniques back to life
that Basques have traditionally used to build
their boats with ethnographic interest.
10/ Pasai Donibane
This floating museum that comes and goes
from port to port shows us part of our
maritime history and how it has changed to
the present day. The typically Basque boat
would be used to fish for Tuna, built of wood
in 1990, keeping the ancestral structure of
traditional boats. Its original installations and
the rehabilitation of its hold as an exhibition
space allow visitors to immerse themselves
in the world of Cantabrian fishing. Through
workshops, thematic routes and different
crossings, children and adults will get
firsthand knowledge of how fishermen used to
live, which fishing grounds they visited and the
techniques they used.
Víctor Hugo Museum House
12/ Irun-Oiartzun
This is a typical 17th century house in Pasai
Donibane where the romantic writer Víctor Hugo
spent the summer in 1843. The museum-house
is home to the permanent exhibition entitled
“Víctor Hugo, a trip through time”, an extensive
collection of furniture and decorative objects
that belonged to the writer. The museum-house
stands in Calle Donibane, a road parallel to the
bay of Pasaia passing through light and shade,
flanked by four houses that make small tunnels.
It was declared a Natural Park in 1995 and has
several points of interest. Its granite massif is
unique in the Basque Country and its peaks
offer impressive views over the Oiartzun Valley.
The conservation of its oak, beech and mixed
forests is outstanding. The quality of its
habitats allows for significant animal life, such
as the wild cat, boar, roebuck, vulture, falcon,
salmon or the Pyrenees muskrat.

The historical centre of the fishing town of
Mutriku, declared a Monumental Complex, is
one of the best preserved medieval centres
in the Basque Country. From Txurruka in the
upper part of town, down to the port via
Beheko Square, we find palaces and towerhouses. The Galdona and Arrietakua houses,
the Berriatua Tower and the Montalivet palace
stand out.
The former studio of the painter Ignacio

The Old town of Orio, or “Goiko kale” is a
labyrinth of cobblestone streets, at times

itself to the sloping terrain, imposes itself
amidst them. The magnificence of its baroque
main altarpiece emphasizes the image Saint

the biotope. The dune area, where the flora
and fauna have adapted to the extreme
living conditions, progressively turns
into a marshland area, in the process of
revitalization.
21/ Deba
Hidden within the city limits of Deba and very
near the coast, there is a green valley that
was formed by the Lastur channel, whose
karstic terrain is full of deep abysses, caves

to the images of the Agonising Christ the
Dolorosa Virgin.
Made up of the towns of Zumaia, Deba and
Mutriku, this is the first geopark in Euskadi
and the Cantabrian Cornice and since 2010 it
has formed part of the European and Global
Network of Geoparks. In addition to covering
the spectacular cliffs along the coastline
including the Flysch Route, the Geopark also
covers inland areas through the Karst Route,
where the Arno or Izarraitz limestone massifs
hide real secrets and legends of the land.

St Mary’s Church
The Church of Santa María monumental
dimensions, almost more fitting of a cathedral,
stand out amid the mountainous slope and
the houses of the medieval Old Town. Built
between the fifteenth and seventeenth
centuries, the poly-chromed portal and its
cloister are two of its main points of interest.
All the fossil materials exhibited in NAUTILUS
form part of the collection held by Jesus M.
Narvaez Amasorrain and Esperanza Azkarraga
who over the last 30 years have been recovering
and safeguarding the paleontological heritage
that otherwise would have been destroyed by
the erosive action of the sea.

The only constant in Inland Gipuzkoa is the colour green and its thousands of variations: the green
of the meadows, the pine forests and the riverside woods but also the green on the village fronton
courts. The territory’s rural flipside is an amazing jumble of mountains, only structured by the
course of the rivers and the towns, historical on the whole, that sprang up next to them. We will
take a look at three parallel water courses, from east to west: Oria, Urola and Deba, all similar and
yet different. They hold medieval treasures such as Segura, fabulous Italian Baroque art such as the
Loiola Sanctuary or tiny valleys with singular beauty such as Kilimon... and that is just a taster.
G
ipuzkoa has a mountainous
landscape. This uneven orography
means that the villages and towns
are grouped together in narrow valleys,
always on the banks of a flowing river. We
will travel down the Rivers Urumea, Oria,
Urola and Deba from their mouths to the
inland mountains where they first appear.
River Oria
On the banks next to the Urumea, Hernani
is the ideal introduction to what is to
come: its medieval past lives on in its
urban area. WHat about an excursion in the
surrounding area? Climb the humble – due
to its diminutive size – mount St Barbara,
inhabited by a small hermitage and a
ruined fort. The views of the valley from the
summit are worth the effort.
We will drive through gentle meadows to
reach Andoain. Beyond the charm of Goiko
square and the baroque church of St Martin
de Tours, the town is made attractive by
its privileged location at the crossing point
between two rivers: the River Oria and the
River Leitzaran that comes from Navarre.
Inland )
A thousand shades
of the same green
From now on, the N-I provides the backbone
to the valley and will guide our steps. It will
lead us to Tolosa, an illustrious town that
used to be the capital of Gipuzkoa in the 19th
century. Its old town stands on what was an
island in the middle of the River Oria. What
monuments can we see? Where should we
start? How about St Mary’s church? It is so
close to the river that it seems to about to
snap off; or the Tinglado market, the essential
reason to drop into Tolosa on a Saturday
morning, when its weekly fair is held.
A few kilometres up the river we find
Ordizia, the first major town in the borough
of Goierri – the Gipuzkoa high lands. It is
a town of many flavours. Take for example
the medieval feel in its narrow streets or the
thousand and one delicious aromas from the
D’elikatuz Centre, a museum that immerses
us in the world of gastronomy and food.
There is only one way to get to know Ordizia
in all its splendour: visiting on a Wednesday,
to see its weekly market, the oldest in
Gipuzkoa.
Beasain is the last of the industrial towns in
this valley. Its most precious treasure is the
Igartza Monumental Complex, a type of
medieval oasis next to the River Oria.
From Beasain we can take a diversion
towards Navarre and visit the town of Ataun,
the gateway to the Aralar Range that has a
close relationship with Basque mythology;
or to the west to Ormaiztegi, birthplace of
the Carlist general Tomás Zumalakarregi, a
fundamental character in modern Basque
History. We should not forget to take a look
at the lovely iron viaduct used by the MadridIrun railway line, also from the same period.
Let’s get back to the towns close to the
Royal Path, including Idiazabal, the town
that gave its name to the delicious cheese
with Protected Denomination of Origin. The
Visitors’ Centre in the town explains the
secrets of making this cheese.
Lareo reservoir, in Ataun (Aralar).
To get to Zerain, we have to come off the
main road and climb up a hill. Its inhabitants
laughed in the face of rural migration by
turning the village into a Cultural Landscape
where there is always something to see, be
it the Ethnography Museum or the impassive
Aizpea mining complex.
A few kilometres away, we will find the last
town on the trip: Zegama. Located on the
skirts of the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park,
on the border between Álava and Navarre,
Zegama boasts significant natural and
cultural heritage.
River Urola
Reaching Zestoa is like landing in one of
the sweetest moments of the early 20th
century, shortly after the Gran Hotel Spa
opened in the town. Its attraction, now
modernised and adapted to new times,
is multiplied thanks to the town’s other
treasure: the Ekain cave paintings, from
Paleolithic times. Although the original cave
is closed to the public to conserve it, its
exact replica can be visited, Ekainberri.
The Urola will be our very own Cicerone:
you just have to follow its course upstream
to reach Lasao, where it is not out of the
question to come across a fully working
steam train. This is the railway belonging
to the Azpeitia Basque Railway Museum
that climbs up to this small halt after a
short – just five kilometres- and romantic
trip. Azpeitia is another little town along
the Urola, with simple streets, a gigantic
church – whose foundations are linked

The River Oria follows us to Segura, housing
one of the best preserved medieval historical
centres in Gipuzkoa. It is still possible to
make out the line of the old town walls or the
vital importance that its Calle Mayor used to
have as the usual passing place for traders
and pilgrims. The town houses an interesting
Visitors’ Centre on the Middle Ages.

Azkoitia is a hop, skip and a jump
from Azpeitia, and can be reached by
a pleasant walk alongside allotments
and homesteads. Azkoitia is one of the
noblest towns in Gipuzkoa and has a
pedestrianised old town with outstanding
stately homes such as Idiáquez, standing
dark and monolithic.
The landscape and the River Urola itself
become capricious from now on: it starts
bending whilst offering some of the most
beautiful spots in rural Gipuzkoa, along
the narrow valley leading us to Zumarraga
and Urretxu. Separated by barely a street,
these two towns are linked to Euskadi’s
most industrial reverse side. In Zumarraga
don’t miss the Antigua hermitage, a
precious religious monument with a solid
wood structure inside that will amaze
everyone.
After a short climb we reach Legazpi, a
town that is also intrinsically linked to the
world of iron. The town has been linked
to transforming this mineral for centuries
as illustrated perfectly by its tourist
attractions: the Mirandaola ironworks or
the Workers Route that shows how metal
workers and their families used to live in
the mid 20th century.
Then we come to Eibar, another miracle of
20th century town planning. The village
smoothly opens up another narrow valley,
this time for the River Ego. One of the
precursors of its growth was the gunsmith
industry and activities derived from it damascene or even manufacturing bicycles
as explained very well in the Gunsmith
Industry Museum.
The River Deba takes a break to lead us
to Bergara. Its privileged location – at a
crossroads between Castile and Europe
– brought about a lively commercial life
that materialised in small palaces and
mansions. A recommendation? St Martin’s
Next we find Oñati, a town boasting more
than five centuries of monuments. Such
as St Michael’s Church - flamboyantly
Gothic and grandiloquent- with a cloister
overlooking the River Ubao, or the Sancti
Spiritus University, that seems to be a
sister to the most sumptuous Renaissance
buildings in Castile. Anyone visiting the
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Arantzazu
– ten kilometres away along a snaking yet
spectacular road – will come across the
greatest of all possible contrasts.

On leaving Mendaro, we go back up the
Deba but the landscape does not give
up: the water course continues to be very
narrow and the mountains around it give us
no pause for breath. This is how we see the
worth of two villages with parallel histories,
Elgoibar and Eibar, which underwent
considerable growth thanks to industrial
development in the last century. Elgoibar
appears first. It has a very interesting
Machine Tool Museum – its specialisation
in this sector gave it prestige throughout
Europe – but also with a Baroque spot in
the middle of the town, in the form of its
town hall and the magnificent church of St
Bartholomew.
Let’s leave Bergara and its monuments to
continue through rural inland Gipuzkoa.
Next stop: Arrasate-Mondragón, a thriving
industrial town where the cooperative
movement emerged in the middle of the
last century and continues to drive its
development. The town has preserved its
historical centre in good condition, with
recognisable medieval traits – arranged
in a strange almond shape – and with
considerable monuments such as the
Baroque church of St John the Baptist.

Tolosa’s Palaces
Txindokiko Itzala
There are many palaces and ancient noble
houses throughout Tolosa. Aranburu Palace,
built in the 17th century, is an example of
Basque Baroque style. Samaniego, the wellknown fable writer, lived in the Idiáquez
Palace, built in the same century. The Andia
Tower, the Atodo Palace and the Iturriza
Palace stand out among the many unique
buildings in Tolosa.

From Navarra to Andoain, the Leitzaran River
crosses a narrow valley with cromlechs,
dolmens and ruins of ancient foundries. The

inhabitants of this natural area that can also be
accessed via Berastegi, Gipuzkoa town on the

Puppet Centre
5 / Beasain
The Tolosa International Puppet Centre is the
only centre dedicated exclusively to the art of
puppetry in the whole of Europe and it
displays an outstanding collection of puppets
from different countries around the world,
composed of different techniques for handling
puppets. The Centre also has an area devoted
to temporary exhibitions on particular aspects
of the puppet universe.
The Igartza Palace (originally dating from the
13th century with several reconstructions) is the
centrepiece of a group of buildings that take
you on a trip through time to the Middle Ages. A
water powered mill, a foundry, a cellar for cider
production and the ancient homes of artisans
are all preserved in the town of Igartza.

Barandiaran Museum
Old Town
Segura was founded in the thirteenth century
by King Alphonse X of Castille. The town still
maintains its medieval urban layout within its
Old Town, which has been declared a
monumental site. The Guevara Palace, the
Ardixarra wooden house (the Medieval
Interpretation Centre is located here) and the
Church of La Asunción, whose altarpiece has
recently been designated Historic-Artistic
Monument, stand out amid its streets.
The museum covers the work of José Miguel
Barandiaran, anthropologist and pre-historian
who dedicated 70 years of his life to studying
and broadcasting the Basque oral tradition.
Barandiaran did not want old proverbs such as
‘Direnik ez da sinistu behar, ez direnik ez da
esan behar’ (You don’t have to believe that
they exist, you must not say that they don’t) to
die out and he wrote them down so that these
ancestral beliefs might last over time.

Zumalacárregui spent his childhood, houses
this exhibition.
Zerain is fundamental to understand the history
of Basque mining, thanks to 150 hectares that
form the Aizpea mines. In a visit to this iron
mountain, the visitor will find out more about
the calcination furnaces, explore the Polvoriñe
gallery and understand the impact that iron
mining has had since the 11th century on society
and the village economy. Zerain’s Cultural

Igartubeiti homestead
Saint Ignatius of Loyola was born in this
house, also known as the “Casa Santa”, in

15th century everyday-life was like. The towerhouse is located within the Sanctuary of
Loyola, built between the 16th and 17th
centuries in honour of the founder of the
Society of Jesus. Its basilica’s cupola is and
impressive sight.
This is a magnificent exponent of the Golden Age
of the Basque homestead and the wooden architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries. The
visit gives us the chance to find out about the
environments, atmosphere, furniture and tools
in a homestead of this period, in addition to seeing a beam press from the 16th century in operation. The visitors’ centre uses latest generation exhibition resources to show the history,

Old Town
This museum is located in Elgoibar, the heart of
the machine-tool industry in Gipuzkoa. It is a
tribute to the pioneers who made the
development of this industry possible, and it
illustrates its historical evolution. One can see a
mechanized workshop in operation, a
blacksmith’s shop, and an exhibit of medieval
machinery in each of the museum’s three halls.
The extraordinary group of mansions and
palaces built in the 16th and 17th centuries
reaches a highpoint of splendour at San Martín
de Aguirre Square, bordered on all sides by the
Town Hall, the Jauregi, Izagirre and Ondartza
Palaces, and by the Bergara Royal Seminary, an
important cultural and scientific centre.
King Philip V, Queen Isabel II and Queen María
Cristina were guests at the Monterrón Palace,
one of the marvellous buildings of ArrasateMondragón’s historic centre, where one can
also enjoy the Church of San Juan, the
baroque Town Hall or Okendo Mansion.

Salt Museum
Salt production has been the main industrial
activity in Leintz Gatzaga (Salinas de Léniz)
from the Middle Ages. The museum now shows
the different systems of producing ‘white gold’
that have been used over the centuries and
aims to recover the usual ways of salt mining,
particularly the 19th century model.

This medieval tower-house, also known as Jauregi

monument. Miguel López de Legazpi, coloniser of
the Philippine Islands, was born here.
This is a space intended for encounters with
art and industry. The museum is centred on
the relations between the sculptor Eduardo
Chillida and the industrial environment, with
the great forge by Patricio Echeverria de
Legazpi and later with Sidenor in Reinosa. The
former paperworks in Legazpi is the space that
houses this museum where we can take a trip

photos, video, projections and interactive
resources and at the same time look in further

Founders of the new Basque cuisine
WITH TWO STARS
The Aduriz phenomenon
Three of the six Spanish restaurants awarded
with the highest on the Michelin Guide are in
San Sebastian and its surroundings: Arzak
(Juan Mari Arzak), Akelarre (Pedro Subijana),
and Berasategui (Martín Berasategui).
Andoni Luis Aduriz occupated the fifth
position in the world ranking of chefs in
2010, according to the prestigious London
magazine ‘Restaurant’. Aduriz offers
original and surprising dishes, which
even include flowers as ingredients. An
avant-garde cuisine that can be tasted in
Mugaritz restaurant, a restored farmhouse
located in a rural spot of the town of
Errenteria.
Arzak and Subijana were the inventors of
the new Basque cuisine. 30 years later, they
continue on the top of avant-garde cuisine
and do not stop innovating in their San
Sebastian restaurants. Martin Berasategui
is younger, but he has the same boldness in
the kitchen of his prize-winning restaurant
in Lasarte-Oria, eight kilometres from San
Sebastian.
Five gastronomic proposals –three of
them in San Sebastian– can be proud of
having a Michelin star. The same prize,
but five different styles.
The veteran cook Hilario Arbelaitz leads
Zuberoa restaurant, in Oiartzun. He is one
of the cornerstones of modern Basque
cuisine due to stay true to land flavours.
His brother, José Mari Arbelaitz, creates
traditional dishes with modern touches
in Arbelaitz restaurant, in Miramon
Technology Park (in San Sebastian).
Continuing in the Gipuzkoa capital,
at the Mirador de Ulia restaurant,
chef Rubén Trincado has been able to
preserve traditions and at the same
time, take risks with vanguard cuisine.
He was trained in the best French and
Basque kitchens and now he’s letting
his imagination run away with him
without forgetting the foundations of
haute cuisine: quality, innovation and
commitment.
In the heart of the Old Town, we find
Kokotxa restaurant, where young Dani
López also offers signature cuisine
dishes. Another promising chef –Gorka
Txapartegi– runs Alameda in Hondarribia
–which finishes the list of the four
restaurants with Michelin stars in
Gipuzkoa.

Going out for pinchos with your friends is a long-standing custom in Gipuzkoa.
Gipuzkoa and particularly its capital San Sebastian is a world reference point for
miniature cuisine, in both its traditional and more sophisticated form.

COMPETITIONS AND FAIRS
On a plate
San Sebastian is the ‘paradise’ for ‘pincho’
lovers. A route through the best bars in
the city never forgets the Old Town and
its many bars –from 31 de Agosto Street to
Fermín Calbetón Street. Very near, crossing
Kursaal Bridge, Gross Quarter hides some
of the most awarded temples of this culinary
speciality, as well as others that, as wineshops, offer miniature proposals combined
with the best quality wines.
‘Pinchos’ have an increasing recognition
within the gastronomy world. Several
competitions take place in the territory,
offering visitors the possibility to
enjoy a tasting: the Basque Country
Pincho Competition, Gipuzkoa Pincho
Competition…
In the city centre, near La Libertad Avenue,
we will find deep-rooted ‘pincho’ bars in the
streets of San Marcial and Etxaide.
The popularity of these culinary delicacies
has spread to the different districts of the city
and the rest of Gipuzkoa, with outstanding
examples in towns such as Hondarribia and
Zarautz.

The markets are the best showcase for Gipuzkoa’s high quality local produce. The Wednesday

ORDIZIA FAIR
The ‘Wall Street’ of markets
TOLOSA MARKET
Three stages
This market goes back to the 11th-12th
century, around the hermitage of St
Bartholomew, as a meeting point for the
primitive folk of Ordizia and producers from
the surrounding area. Nowadays, the fair
takes place in the town centre, in the Plaza
Mayor (Main Square). Every Wednesday,
the fair gathers buyers and sellers of
agricultural and livestock products coming
from the whole Goierri region, in a very
lively and colourful atmosphere.
Tolosa has always been a path for
travellers coming from Navarre, Castile,
and France, allowing an important
commercial development. As an example
of that, the town now holds a weekly
market divided into three different places
within town.
In addition to ordinary markets, different
special fairs are held throughout the year,
such as the Basque Festivals in September
and their prestigious Sheep’s Cheese
Competition. This attracts gastronomists
from all over the country, rounded off with
an auction for the winning cheese that can
hit figures over 7000 Euros. In December
an exceptional fair is organised on the
Wednesday after Christmas.
Every Saturday, El Tinglado market
witnesses the sale of local products,
such as the highly esteemed Tolosa
bean, the black pudding, the ‘mondejus’
–a variety of white pudding–, and
the green chili peppers typical of the
neighbouring village of Ibarra.
SEASON PRODUCTS
The best products from the orchard
The orchards in the Basque Country –and
specially those in Gipuzkoa–offer products
that have been always praised for their
quality. In Winter, beans play the main role
in the different markets and, regarding
desserts, the typical products are the
‘mamia’ (sheep milk curd), Errezil apples
–roasted or in compote–, walnuts and
chestnuts. Moreover, Winter also offers
the new vintage of cider and txakoli (white
whine).
Spring proposes us the suckling
lamb, Idiazabal cheese, anchovies
and mackerels, little peas, little broad
beans, artichokes, asparaguses, and
chards. Summer comes with delicious
fish like tuna, anchovies, or sardines,
but also exquisite vegetables: peppers,
tomatoes, and local bean pods. Autumn
is the season for fungi and different local
mushrooms –always in demand–, as well
as for game meat.
At the same time, visitors can also buy
foreign products –in Euskal Herria
Square– and flowers and plants –in
Verdura Square.
The town houses different gastronomy
fairs throughout the year: Easter –Tolosa
Gourmet–, Spring –Tolosa Goxua (sweet
things)–, November –Bean Week–, and
December –the Chuletón Festival (large
T-bone steak).

In season, cider is tasted directly from the barrel on shouting “txotx”. The rest of the year it is drunk from the bottle.

TRADITION OUT OF

CIDER
Its best moment
THE RITUAL
Serve yourself
Cider bottling starts in May, finishing with
cider making process, which begins in
September with the gathering of the fruit.
Out of season –from May to January–, cider
is served in bottles and, as producers say, it
offers its best qualities. Nevertheless, those
who want to experience the ritual of serving
cider directly from the barrels will be able to
do it in some of the cider bars opening all
year round.
In cider bars, tradition says that one
must eat standing up, although not all
establishments follow this custom. In any
case, all of them repeat the same ritual when
it comes to taste cider. The guest serves
directly from the kupelas (barrels) on a thin
glass and with the necessary lean of the
glass, so that cider “sparks”. The kupelas
are usually placed in rooms near the dining
room. That is why one can see a continuous
‘come and go’ of people from the tables to
the cider cellar in a very lively atmosphere.
Another interesting option for those visiting
this area s is buying bottles directly to
producers.

THE MENU
More options
Cider bars offer their visitors the traditional
menu made of T-bone steak, salt cod
omelette, salt cod and green peppers, nuts,
cheese, and quince.
Nonetheless, if you go from May to January,
some bars offer more possibilities, such as
special menus, and visitors have the chance
to choose among different dishes of Basque
gastronomy –from meat and fish to delicious
local vegetables.
The menu is practically the same in all cider
bars. Cod omelette, cod and peppers,
T-bone steak, and, cheese, quince, and nuts
as dessert.
The txakoli vineyards carpet the mountains round Getaria.
It is a young, white and fruity wine,
ideal to accompany fish and seafood.
Txakoli has long been considered to be a local wine but its consumption has spread of the last few years under the
Getaria Denomination of Origin. The Txakoli Route, through the coastal towns of Aia, Zarautz and Getaria, has a few
surprises in store for visitors interested in the secrets of how it is made.

THE TXAKOLI ROUTE
A walk through the vineyards
ELABORATION
Since the 12th Century
DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN
Txakoli from Getaria
The Getaria D.O. Txakoli route can be
driven, as it covers the 400 hectares of
vineyards used to make this wine. The
duly marked route offers visitors beautiful
coastal landscapes and takes in wineries
in Zarautz, Getaria and Aia that produce
this drink, some of which can be visited
on prior reservation. These ‘txakolindegis’
organise a tasting session, accompanied
by delicious seasoned anchovies and
exquisite fresh local tuna. Txakoli is
poured from an inch above the glass,
breaking it and releasing its aromas. It
is the ideal drink to go with all types of
starters, seafood, fish and white meat.
Some experts maintain that Txakoli has
been produced in Gipuzkoa since the 12th
Century. In the modern era, for decades
it was considered as a local wine, but
thanks to the efforts of the Getaria DO
winemakers, it has become one of the star
products of Gipuzkoa’s gastronomy in the
last thirty years.
Both winemakers and the Basque
Administration made great efforts to
recover and improve the wine’s quality,
a joint effort that was rewarded in 1989,
when the Txakoli from Getaria was
granted the Designation of Origin under
the name “Getariako Txakolina” (Txakoli
from Getaria). In 2007, this designation
was extended to the whole Historic
Territory of Gipuzkoa.
This young and fruity wine is elaborated
from two different local grape varieties,
Hondarribi Zuri (Hondarribi White) –which
means 95% of the production–, and
Hondarribi Beltza (Hondarribi Black) –the
remaining 5%. They are grown in trained
vines and grape trellis. Aia, Zarautz and
Getaria are the three Gipuzkoan towns
with the highest rate of Txakoli production,
although we can also find wineries and
vine growers in other places, such as
Hondarribia, Arrasate, Zumaia, or Oñati.
The harvest starts at the beginning of
autumn and the elaboration is carried
out using the most modern pressing and
fermentation technologies.
The Regulatory Board for this Designation
of Origin, located in Getaria, has the
mission to watch over the origin of the
local grapes, its careful elaboration
and the quality control, so it all comes
together to offer the consumer the
highest quality of Txakoli from Getaria.

SURROUNDING AREA
The great annual event in the area is San
Sebastian Gastronomika (November), a
Congress which brings together the best in
the business from all over the world to find
out about the latest culinary revolutions.
Just as innovating, there is Cook & Fashion,
held shortly afterwards, linking the world of
fashion with haute cuisine. Larger crowds
amass for the St Thomas Fair (December)
where you can taste all types of typical
products in a festive atmosphere. Close to
Donostia, Astigarraga is the Basque cider
capital: the most important dates in the
production of this apple drink are September
(Harvest Festival), January (start of the
season) and July with Cider Day.
DELICACIES ON THE COAST
It is almost impossible not to eat well on
the Gipuzkoa coast or not find a festival
paying homage to some kind of food. In
October Hondarribia holds the Euskal
Herria Pincho Championship and in Orio,
in July, they prepare dozens of grilled sea
bream right in the street, during the festival
held in its honour. In Getaria, a village
smothered in vines bearing white grapes,
they begin the year with Txakoli Eguna
(January) announcing the annual harvest
of this young, fruity wine that goes so well
with seafood. Zarautz, in September, and
Aia, in April, also hold their own Txakoli
Eguna. Octopus goes perfectly with this
wine and Zumaia dedicates a day to it
in September whilst in Mutriku they do
the same with ‘verdel’ in the spring. In
January, the beach town of Deba hosts a
significantly rural fair, Urteberriko Azoka.

there is no need to choose, you

three, as the distance between

wilder, is the youngest and

Zurriola, or Gros Beach, is the youngest beach

The Ondarreta Beach loops up the San Sebastian
Bay protected by Santa Clara Island and Mount
Igeldo. It is slightly apart from La Concha Beach
by the Loro Peak, below the Miramar Palace. It is
maybe the most beautiful and, in any case, the
noblest of the beaches in Gipuzkoa. Its width
allows it to exhibit its San sebastian elegance
more calmly than La Concha Beach.
Ondarbeltz

Ondarbeltz means ‘black sand’ in

ARALAR MOUNTAIN RANGE
AIZKORRI MOUNTAIN RANGE
Infinite meadows and imposing summits
Gipuzkoa’s rooftops
We find the Aralar mountain range (10,971
hectares) in southeast Gipuzkoa. It is one
of the most emblematic mountain areas in
Euskadi that also stretches out into Navarra.
Its pastoral plateau, its woods and its many
megalithic remains make it worth a visit.
In addition to the majestic Mount Txindoki
(1331 metres) which can be accessed from
the town of Abaltzisketa, there are endless
routes marked out criss-crossing the nature
park, with outstanding spots such as the
Lareo reservoir (Ataun).
The gentle slopes of this track mean
that many families can enjoy this
track on their bikes.
Lizarrusti is the Reception and Visitors’
Centre for the park, housed in the former
Miquelet barracks fitted out with a sensorial
experience room and another dedicated
to trekking and a third recreational room.
The centre houses a hostel with 36 bunks
and a double room adapted for people with
physical disabilities.

PAGOETA NATURE PARK
Walking through beech trees
This is where we find the highest peaks
in the whole Basque Country: Aitzuri,
standing 1551 metres high and Aizkorri
at 1528. The massif is a privileged
place with views over both the south of
Gipuzkoa and the Alava plain.
The Oria, Urola and Deba rivers spring
from the rocks on this great wall of
limestone peaks that have been crossed
by men since time and memorial,
as proven by the many megalithic
monuments or the St Adrian tunnel,
drilling through so that pilgrims on the
St James’ Way could pass through from
Gipuzkoa to Álava.
The Aizkorri mountain range has two
gateways. There is natural access via the
Oria basin at the town of Zegama with its
Aizkorriko Ataria visitors’ centre, located
in the Anduetza homestead. Anyone
coming via the Deba basin will take the
path leading to the Arantzazu Parketxe,
located in the Gandiaga Topagunea
building, a visitors’ centre for the Nature
Park housing a permanent exhibition,
educational rooms and interactive
resources that tell us about the
underground world, woods and livestock
kept on the pasture.
The ancient beech woods that carpeted
the Pagoeta summits gave their name
to this nature park that can be entered
via Aia, between Orio and Zarautz.
The park invites visitors to actively
get in touch with nature, getting to
grips with its secrets and observing
its very last detail. The Iturraran
homestead is the gateway to the park
and introduces visitors to it via an
anthropological-ethnographical and
education exhibition. Close by, a hive
shows how bees live and the Botanical
Garden displays over 1000 specimens
of plants, trees and shrubs. It is worth
walking right down the valley, enjoying
the woods splashed with oaks, maples,
ash, etc until you reach the Agorregi
ironworks, a recreation of an 18th
century water-powered installation
where you can see four water wheels
working.

LEITZARAN
This is one of the most
suggestive routes in Gipuzkoa’s
geography, not only due to the
landscapes it shows but also
due to the history this thick
blanket of oaks, beeches and
pines hides. At the beginning
of the 20th century, the train
transporting to Andoain the
iron mineral extracted in the
Plazaola Mines crossed the
valley of the Leitzaran River.
Years afterwards, the mining
activity stopped and it became
a passenger train between
Pamplona and San Sebastian
until the middle of the century.
Then, the Plazaola train fell into
oblivion until its gently
sloping route was recovered, its
many tunnels were illuminated
and it began to be frequented
by walkers and cyclists. In
total, almost 25 kilometres
within Gipuzkoa and a fantastic
repertoire of forests and stone
bridges.

MOUNTAINS AND PATHS FOR ALL TASTES
The uneven and varied orography in
Gipuzkoa makes this province the ideal
place for trekking. Costal mountains such as
Mendizorrotz or Jaizkibel, inland ranges such
as Aralar or Aizkorri or medium sized peaks
such as Izarraitz or Irimo give a few good
examples of the kind of mountains dotted
throughout Gipuzkoa.
On the one hand, there are numerous
trekking excursions suitable for all levels
such as climbing Ernio, Adarra, Txindoki or
Aizkorri, among the Gipuzkoa rooftops. You
only really need a morning to get up one of
them.
On the other hand, a complex network of long
distance tracks pass from North to South
and from East to West of Gipuzkoa. They are
the well-known GR routes - shown by two
lines, one white, one red - that mark out more
ambitious and complex paths that would
require several days’ effort to finish in their
entirety. Even so, they can be broken down
into sections or shorter excursions.
We should highlight the GR-121 that
completely circumnavigates Gipuzkoa; the
GR-20, that skirts round the entire Aralar
Mountain Range or the GR-120 that gives us
an excellent panoramic view inland taking in
three architectonic and religious milestones:
the Loyola Sanctuary, La Antigua hermitage
in Zumarraga and the Arantzazu Sanctuary.
We can also follow in the footsteps of the
patron saint of Gipuzkoa along the Ignatius
route of the GR-21 remembering the painful
journey that St Ignatius of Loyola had to take
after being injured in Pamplona; or go on a
pilgrimage to Arantzazu from San Sebastian,
crossing the province completely (GR-34),
rediscover the migration path (GR-35) used
by farmers or follow the Cheese Route (GR283) that combines nature, gastronomy and
culture.

TWO WHEELS AND MANY LANES
Future belongs to two wheels. On one
hand, San Sebastian, the capital city,
enjoys a wide network of bidegorris -that
is how cycle lanes are called in Basque
language since they are marked in red
(gorri)- interconnecting the different
quarters of the city.
On the other hand, the rest of localities
in this historic territory are also joining
this initiative, coinciding with the
building of inter-urban lanes to structure
all Gipuzkoa for both pedestrians and
cyclists. We should also mention the
cycle lanes -properly signposted and
adapted- and the greenways that allow
us to get in touch with nature without
damaging the environment.
The district of Debabarrena is the
location of the only Mountain Bike
Centre in Gipuzkoa. Located in Elgoibar,
at the Mintxeta collection point, it offers
information on routes and offers cyclists
a new GPS hire service.

HISTORY WRITTEN
ON STONE
Some call it the book of Earth History. They are
right: the cliffs and the coastal flysch between
Zumaia, Deba and Mutriku are a look at several
centuries of geological evolution. This beautiful
and singular landscape also hides one of the
richest ecosystems in Gipuzkoa’s coast, with a
unique biodiversity that cannot be seen in other
parts of this territory.
FLYSCH
The flysch- German term meaning “flow” or
“slide” - of the Gipuzkoa coastline is one of the
most important and complex natural areas in
Europe. For centuries, the continual action of the
sea has taken its toll on the cliffs, wearing them
down like a sugar cube and exposing a meadow
of thousands of layers of stone. The plates that
we see today in an almost vertical position
thereby formed part of the horizontal seabed
in the distant past. The results of nature’s
incessant sculpting work can be appreciated in
the black flysch in Mutriku, the cliffs surrounding
Deba and the strata in Zumaia that you can walk
over when the tide goes out.
Thanks to studying this section of the coast,
scientists from all over the world have found
out about the intimacies of the planet since
the Iberian Peninsula joined on to Europe
and the later creation of the Pyrenees until
the dinosaurs disappeared. Even so, the tidal
plain is still alive. It is currently a biological
sanctuary where diversity is the general rule,
with over 200 species of all types living in the
natural ponds and nooks and crannies. Zumaia,
by means of the Itzurun beach, is the natural
gateway, although there is also easy access
along Sakoneta or Itxaspe beaches, close to
Deba and Mutriku’s Seven Beaches.
The Arditurri mines and the secrets they enclose, the replica of the Ekain cave, Ekainberri and the fascinating trip
around Arrikrutz complete the journey into the depths of Gipuzkoa.
Caves of Gipuzkoa
BASQUE COAST GEOPARK
The flysch route is not the only attraction
in this first Euskadi Geopark and along
the Cantabrian cornice which has been
part of the European and Global Network
of Geoparks since 2010. Very close to
the coast, in the limestone massifs of
Arno or Izarraitz, we find the Karst Route
providing the greatest set of cavities
with archaeological traces in Gipuzkoa.
We should mention the Ekain caves and
the beauty of the natural landscape that
hides many secrets, legends and enigmas
just waiting to be discovered by visitors.

Information
The Algorri Nature Visitors’ Centre, located in
Zumaia, brings together all the information
required on the tidal plane and the cliffs and
it is the ideal educational support to find
out about the phenomenon in its entirety. In
Mutriku, in turn, the Nautilus museum houses a
complete collection of fossils going back to the
Secondary Age, all extracted from the town’s
coastal profile. On the other hand, the tourism
offices for these three towns offer a wide range

CENTURIES OF PREHISTORY,
SILVER AND ART
)
ARDITURRI
the Millennial Mine
EKAIN
Artists of the Past
Within the domains of the Aiako Harria Natural
Park –Aya Crags–, the Arditurri Mines remained
working almost uninterruptedly for 2,000
years. In the Iron Age first and then during
the Roman occupation in these territories,
the complex became a valuable source of
wealth. The depths of these rocky massifs
kept roaring during the Middle Ages to feed
the foundries that emerged near the region’s
rivers during the following centuries. The
intense activity stopped at the end of the past
century with a crushing balance: its inside
produced thousands of tons of materials such
as iron, lead, silver, or fluorite. This continual
exploitation favoured the creation of an
amazing natural space in the heart of these
rocky massifs; a space made of kilometres
and kilometres of galleries, passages, and
artificial small caves. When you get deep into
it, it is easy to imagine the reason why a place
like this, loaded with tons of valuable metals,
captivated both the Romans and those who
came after them.
There are two different visits as well as an
Interpretation Centre revealing the secrets and
history of this place. Likewise, the old route
of the mining railway -built at the beginning
of the 20th century- shapes the Arditurri
Green Way, frequented by hikers and cyclists
and offering a route to know more about the
setting of the mining complex.
Ekain Cave was discovered in 1969 but its
history began hundreds of years earlier.
Considered as one of the prehistoric art
treasures of the Cantabria coast and
declared –together with important “sister”
caves like Altamira or Tito Bustillo- a
World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, Ekain
has been the best kept underground
treasure of the Basque Country. So
much so that for decades it had to be
protected from overcrowding to ensure
that is paintings could be appreciated
by future generations. Consequently, in
2008, Ekainberri was opened, a more
than accurate reproduction of this cave
inhabited in Palaeolithic times and situated
very close to the original artistic sanctuary.
Ninety percent of the Ekain paintings
were reproduced, including those which
were as important as the French cave of
Lascaux, considered the great cathedral
of cave art, and they simulated the folds
and nooks and crannies of the original
space, producing a replica that is so real
and respectful of the surrounding area.
Ekainberri also contains an exhibition room
which covers the importance of José Miguel
Barandiaran when studying prehistoric
evidence in the Basque Country; the
details of the discovery of the Ekain Cave
and information about other Palaeolithic
art treasures in the Basque.

ARRIKRUTZ
Cave of Wild Animals
Situated halfway between Oñati and the
Sanctuary of Arantzazu, at the foot of
the Aizkorri massif, Arrikrutz Cave is an
underground universe formed by over a
dozen kilometres of galleries. In 2007, the
work was completed to fit out 500 metres
of the cave to enable visitors to discover
its secrets via a platform and a complex
lighting system. Beyond the audiovisual
merits of the route, Arrikrutz is a kind
of Baroque underground cathedral that
Nature has incessantly crafted over the
centuries, creating impossible shapes
and slender stalactites. The space, which
is crossed by an underground river, the
Aldaola, acted as a refuge for wild animals
as bears, panthers or lions. Traces of all
of these animals were left inside Arrikrutz
which can be viewed now, in an hour-long
visit to the Earth’s core.
Before entering the underground world,
visitors can familiarise themselves with
the caves in the Arrikrutz Visitors’ Centre,
drop by drop sculpture. The centre houses
a permanent exhibition with several
photographs and information panels
explaining how Arrikrutz emerged and the
history of caving in Oñati, palaeontology,
fauna in the cave, the evolution and
formation of the limestone rock and the 15
kilometres of inter-connected galleries that
make up the Karstic system of Gesaltza,
Arrikrutz and Jaturabe. The exhibition is
completed by two replica craniums of a
lion and a cave bear..

During the cosmopolitan Belle Époque, Gipuzkoa had up to eleven spas opened at the same time. Among them, the
Cestona Spa is the only one that has remained without stopping. The discovery of the therapeutic effects of Zestoa’s
springs is attributed to the dogs of the Marquis of San Millán. According to tradition, in 1760 they cured from mange
after having a bath in some natural pools with warm water. Now the Gipuzkoa tradition of thermal springs is making a
comeback in the form of recently-built, modern facilities.

Eduardo Chillida.
Mentioning Eduardo Chillida’s figure means evoking one of the most international
and respectable contemporary artists, but also remembering a man who is closely
tied to the land where he was born and where he died. His sculptures are, as his
own person, indebted to the virtues of the environment. This is the reason of the
close relationship between his work and the territory of Gipuzkoa. He was the
artist who dared to tame steel, create spaces of air and establish dialogues with
stone. The museum devoted to him, Chillida-Leku, catalyses an important part of
his work, however, it is also distributed around San Sebastian, his home town.
Eduardo Chillida)
THE ARTIST WHO
SHAPED GIPUZKOA
Loyal to the philosophy that he confessed
in his life, Eduardo Chillida was a tree with
the roots in his birthplace and the branches
opened to the rest of the world. His work,
deeply rooted to his environment and linked
to its circumstances, followed the same
course and has finally designed a universal
legacy. Gipuzkoa is the starting point for
discovering the fruits of Eduardo Chillida’s
fifty years of creative activity.
His sculptures are not only an indissoluble
part of our living space, but also of our
sentimental memory. That is why most of
his works refer to places and landscapes in
Gipuzkoa. The sculpture material remind us
the iron tradition; the lurras (clays) evoke
the cult of nature, prevailing since megalithic
times, and spaces like the Wind Comb inform
on the artist’s commitment to marry art and
nature. This way, to have a deep knowledge
of his work, we need to travel through
Gipuzkoa’s historic territory, comparing
valleys, discovering sculptures in their natural
environment and, finally, visiting the museum
that the sculptor dreamed to house his
works.
Mirandaola Ironworks.
Legazpi, a town that was the iron capital for centuries with as many as fifteen ironworks,
now displays its close relationship with this metal through an interesting network of museums.
CHILLIDA-LEKU’S LEGACY
As if it were one more work, the museum
exhibiting Eduardo Chillida’s legacy
was the fruit of a long, pondered and
passionate process. The artist visited the
green spots surrounding the Zabalaga
Farmhouse, in the locality of Hernani,
during almost twenty years, in order to
plan the achievement of his dream. A
perfect place for the marriage of his works
and nature or, as he himself said, “A space
where my sculptures can rest and where
people can walk among them like if it was
a forest.”
The terrains of this 16th century
farmhouse, dotted with beech trees,
magnolias and oak trees, shelter 40
sculptures of different sizes. These make
up a space that walks between fantasy
and reality and that changes depending
on the season of the year. The works
exhibited in this space can be touched
and are the invitation card to take part
in the games of light and air proposed
by the Donostian artist, who always ran
away from straight shapes. The Zabalaga
Farmhouse, restored according at the
sculptor’s will, houses reduced-format
works, made in alabaster, terracotta,
plaster, wood, steel and paper; as well as
a hall for temporary exhibitions tackling
the most intimate creative processes of
Eduardo Chillida.
Far from becoming a static space,
Chillida-Leku has been a source of
multidisciplinary cultural activities from
the beginning. In harmony with the
philosophy of the artist who conceived
it, the museum periodically houses
classical music and jazz concerts, dance
performances, plastic art workshops
and educational programmes to bring
Chillida’s art, life and work near the
visitors.

BASQUE IRON MUSEUM AND
MIRANDAOLA IRONWORKS
Only when you visit this museum, located
in the old foundry, can you understand the
importance of metal in the Urola Valley and
its capacity to mutate the landscape and the
towns’ customs. This space uses information
panels, audiovisual presentations and old
tools to explain the iron industry in all its
complexity.
The visits are completed with live
demonstrations, on Sundays, at the
Mirandaola Ironworks –scene of a famous
miracle– on a journey back to the 14th
century to discover how the labourers of the
time worked and the spectacular mechanism
that made it possible to work the iron.
The museum is also a valuable source of
information to articulate themed routes
around the district with this mineral as the
focal point.
Mirandaola Parc, barrio Telleriarte (Legazpi).
Legazpi’s Iron culture reached its height in
the 20th century. It was then that the face
of the town was transformed to adapt to
the demands of the growing metal industry.
The new urban landscapes which arose
at that time, in the 1950s, now provide an
interesting route through the ins and outs
of the workers’ world. It is a trip not only
through time but also through Legazpi,
discovering all the infrastructures created to
house the workers and their families, from the
largest -the industrial buildings, the workers’
housing estates, the company store, the
dispensary…- to more intimate spaces like the
villa where the industrial businessman lived,
the typical proletarian home, the chapel or the
classrooms where the children were taught.
These last three places –perfectly recreated
and set, as if time had stopped– can be visited
to appreciate the details of that window open
onto the past.

Legazpi recently opened a new museum area
where visitors can find out firsthand about
the town’s close relationship with iron and,
therefore also the relationship between the
artist Eduardo Chillida –who models this metal
like no other– and Patricio Echeverria, one of
the most important businessmen in Gipuzkoa
who turned rural Legazpi into an industrial
town, creating thousands of jobs. The museum
is a place created for art and industry to
come together, opening up Chillida’s creative
worlds through photos, video, projections and
interactive resources.

BREADMAKING MUSEUM
Whilst the metal revolution took place, rural
work continued in the outskirts of Legazpi or
in villages such as Zumarraga that kept their
rural essence and the solitary homesteads
which work as small independent agricultural
exploitations. We can find out more about this
rural tradition through the Igaralde-Goena
homestead or Breadmaking museum that
go into greater depth on Gipuzkoa’s milling
and bread-making tradition, explaining the
process from sowing the wheat seed to when
the dough, comes out of the oven, already
cooked. The Shepherding Ecomuseum, on the
other hand, covers the world of sheep, grass
and Idiazabal cheese and offers firsthand
knowledge on the cheese manufacturing
process. The Igartubeiti Homestead - in
Ezkio-Itsaso- is essential in the Basque rural
landscape as a typical 16th century Basque
house turned into a museum that reflects how
homesteads used to look, how they worked as
farms and the cider production procedure.

The Wind Comb is probably Eduardo Chillida’s
most emblematic work, as well as one of the
landscape icons of San Sebastian. Beached
in the western end of La Concha Bay and
perpetually facing the sea fury, this site
includes three sculptures showing rust due
to the passing of time that perfectly illustrate
the marriage between human spirit and
natural beauty. It does not matter if a storm
lashes the coast or if a gale-force wind comes
here to soften: the work created by Chillida
and the architect Luis Peña Ganchegui is
visited everyday by local and foreign people.
The Wind Comb is not only one of the city’s
romantic spots, but also an unavoidable
appointment for those who want to get
deeper into the Basque sculptor’s particular
universe.

The Sanctuary built in his honour bears
an obvious likeness to St. Peter’s Basilica
at the Vatican as it was designed in the
17th century by Carlo Fontana, a disciple
of the architect Bernini, who was courageous enough to construct a dome with a
diameter of 20 metres which some thought
would not hold its own weight. Despite its
moderate dimensions inside, the temple
is an example of all the virtues of the
baroque movement, from the Solomonic
columns and the proliferation of gold to
the large carved wooden doors brought
over from Cuba, and the pink marble or
the impressive Bohemia crystal chandelier.
The Churrigueresque style is perhaps the
best legacy that we have been left by the
religious community, set in the impressive
Great Altar, as a work created within the
protection and excesses of the CounterReformation that aimed to fight off the
Protestant theses that Luther was sowing

recently restored and so it now looks as it
would have done when it was finished in
the 18th century.

LA ANTIGUA CHAPEL
The Miniature Cathedral
A few centuries before, in the Early Middle
Ages, the walls were erected on a building
intended for war, making the most of a
privileged natural terrace on Mount Beloki.
It was designed to monitor the crossroads
although over time this small fort with barely
any windows or external decoration became
one of Gipuzkoa’s artistic treasures, the
hermitage of our Lady of La Antigua.
Located in the town of Zumarraga, the
beauty of La Antigua - popularly known as
the “cathedral of all hermitages” - revolves
around its monolithic pose, its privileged
location surrounded by centenary oaks and
walls that seem to groan and yet hiding a
monumental treasure trove that surprises
everyone. Inside, a parsimonious structure
made of oak gracefully holds up the ceiling of
the building which seems to float, protecting
the venerated statute of the Virgin, created in
the Gothic period. This is a singular work of
carpentry, an unbeatable example of Basque
craftsmanship at the service of a complex
architectonic framework that, after different
restorations, has made it to our times intact.
Some beams hide surprises, shaped as
female heads, enigmatic figures that link the
temple up with copious Basque mythology.
In fact, next to the door leading to La Antigua,
on the right hand side, you can see strange
notches in the stone. Popular tradition
swears that they are actually the finger prints
of gentiles, the giant pagans from Basque
mythology that, according to legend, lived in
the caves of Aizkorri.
La Antigua can claim to be one of the key
temples in terms of spreading Christianity,
primitive at the time, through Basque lands,
in addition to a cohesion factor between
villages and the numerous homesteads
dotted around.

The 14 apostles on the facade of the Arantzazu
Sanctuary were the work of Jorge Oteiza.
The first impression is always surprising
because the Aranzazu Sanctuary is above
all a daring complex of buildings, ahead of
its time and completely ground-breaking.
Although the first stone in the complex was
laid in 1950, this spot could already claim
several centuries of religious fervour. It all
began at the end of the 14th century when,
according to the Mariana legend, the Virgin
of Arantzazu appeared to a shepherd on a
hawthorn bush. The shepherd, surprised,
only managed to asked her “Arantzan zu?”
in Basque (Are you in the hawthorn?) giving
the origin of the name by which we currently
know the statute presiding over the church’s
apse.
Given that the place of the apparition was
not the best place to build a sanctuary, the
faithful moved the sculpture to a parish
church in the Valley of Oñati, but the Virgin
always went back to the complicated cliffs
of Mount Aloña, where it was decided
to build the Sanctuary. Fire was one of
the great protagonists of the history of
Arantzazu and was the reason why, in the
20th century, it was decided to carry out
an almost complete reconstruction of a
complex in which the gothic and baroque
parts had been damaged by the flames.
This way, in 1950, Arantzazu -situated just
ten kilometres north of Oñati became a kind
of architectonic and artistic laboratory, a
project that was too daring for that period
which was not free from controversy. This
way, whilst the architects Sainz de Oiza
and Laorga decorated the building with its

direction of the Castille plateau.

THE COASTAL ROAD
Ordizia
Dating from prior to the inland route, the coastal
route seems to be one of the most primitive.
In the 9th and 10th centuries, as yet without
the road improvements linking Gipuzkoa with
Castile, it was the pilgrims’ favourite route as
they had to face the “swollen fury of the Ocean’s
arms all around them” (Hugo de Oporto,
Portuguese bishop in 1120).
Beasain

Stage 2:
Andoain Beasain (36,6 km.)
ALAVAARABA
From Andoain, the Inland Road follows the Oria
River course, passing among highways and
areas of farmhouses through Villabona, Anoeta
and the small village of Hernialde until we get
into Tolosa.
Tolosa was one of the villages founded by
Alphonse X the Wise and, afterwards, it
became the capital of Gipuzkoa. The OspitalZaharra (Old Hospital), which gave refuge to
the pilgrims, the Idiakez Palace and the Parish
Church of Santa María are some of the points
we should stop in.
From here, the road goes into a more
mountainous area, through the Santa Marina
Quarter of Albiztur and the foot of Mount
Murumendi, the geographic centre of Gipuzkoa.
On descending towards Beasain, we will find
the Igartza Monumental Site.
Stage 2:
San Sebastian – Zarautz (25 km.)
Stage 3:
Beasain - Zalduondo (Álava) (34,3 km.)
From Beasain, the road climbs the Olaberria
Height, from which we can observe all the
Goierri, and it approaches the Hermitage of
Kurutzeta, in Idiazabal. The following point will
be Segura, where the Historic Quarter, declared
monumental site, preserves its medieval
structure. We will pass near the Santa Bárbara
Hermita-ge before reaching, after several
going-ups and downs, Zegama, whose pilgrim
hospital was located in the present Las Nieves
Hermitage.
We will climb among forests, with the
hermitages of Iruetxea and Sancti-Spiritus as
reference, until we reach the hill that crowns
the San Adrián Tunnel, a pass bored into the
crag since time immemorial. Further away,
Álava-Araba awaits.
of its Santiago Square. We will cross to Pasai
San Pedro on boat, from where we can climb
another mount, Ulia, that separates it from the
capital. After greeting La Plata Lighthouse, the
walker can enjoy a beautiful stroll with views
across to the sea, until descending to San
Sebastian.
Stage 1:
Irun – San Sebastian (25 km.)
From the Santiago Bridge, we will walk through
the road up to Hondarribia, with a beautiful
walled Old Quarter that is a National HistoricArtistic Monument. Charles V’s Castle (at
present a Government owned hotel) dominates
the Armas Square. The Guadalupe fort and
sanctuary (15th century) are located in the
ascent to Mount Jaizkibel.
Following a path we will go through all the
coastal Mount Jaizkibel getting down to Lezo,
where we go past the Basilica of El Santo
Cristo, famous due to its beardless Christ. The
way continues towards Pasai Donibane, the
most picturesque district of those facing the
Bay of Pasaia, with the typical fishing houses
On the other side of La Concha Bay, the route
gets to the top of Mount Igeldo and to its
extension, Mendizorrotz. Already in Orio we
find the hermitage of St Martin de Tours. After
crossing the Oria River mouth and Mount
Talaimendi, Zarautz awaits the walker. Besides
its long beach, we must visit the Church of
Santa María la Real, with its ‘Pilgrim’s Tomb’.
Stage 3:
Zarautz – Deba (where a hostel for pilgrims is
located) (22 km.)
The old road that linked Zarautz and Getaria is
located through the Height of Meagas. The trees
in the Vista Alegre Park and the Santa Bárbara
Hermitage show us the way. On going down
towards Zumaia, the pilgrims usually stopped in
another church devoted to San Martín de Tours,
the Church of Askizu.
In Zumaia, the Coastal Road went deep into
the inland, through the Urola River and a path
among farmhouses, in order to reach another
milestone for the pilgrim, the Church of Itziar,
with its 13th century image of the Virgin.
A path passing by the San Roque Hermitage
guides us to Deba, with its parish church
devoted to Santa María.
Stage 4:
Deba – Markina-Xemein (Bizkaia) (29 km.)
From Deba, the route starts crossing the only
bridge over the estuary that will lead us to
the Laranga Quarter, located already in the
municipality of Mutriku. From here, the path
will guide us through Mount Arno (included in
the Natura 2000 Network of Areas of Special
Interest) to the territory of Bizkaia. The end of
this stage is located in the Collegiate Church of
Zenarruza, 6 kilometres from Markina-Xemein.
