It is with a heavy heart that I write this President's letter. As most of you know by now the Kerry family lost
Bob Nazak - a very dear and valued friend. His sudden
passing on June 21 came as a great shock to all of us
who knew and admired him. A memorial service was
held on June 27 with interment to be held at Arlington
National Cemetery in late October. Bob was a respected
and cherished member of the USKBTC who was always
there for our breed, the club, and the dog fancy.
On a personal note Bob was my "go to person". He was
on the board during my first term as a governor when
I was elected secretary. I had many questions and Bob was always just a phone call away to lend a hand or
make a suggestion. Over the following years I always found him very dedicated to helping new people or
anyone who asked for his help.
Elsewhere in this issue you will find a tribute written by a few of his personal friends. We hope that Martha and his family understand how much we appreciated and treasured Bob. After talking with Martha, the
USKBTC Board is planning to dedicate the Montgomery weekend 2011 to celebrate his life. At that time we
hope that Martha and their children will be able to attend. During this difficult time please keep them in
your prayers.
On a happier note we have a first to celebrate. The Kerry Blue Terrier breed has their first Grand Champion. We want to extend our congratulations to Carol and Larry Brown on our breed’s first ever AKC
Grand Champion. If you have not noticed, please check the cover of this issue for the photo of our first
AKC Grand Champion Kerry Blue Terrier GCH CH Bluebeard’s Suddenly Bridey, who earned the title on
May 29, 2010. This was a very exciting event that followed two Best in Show wins the weekend before the
Pittsburgh Specialty. The win in Pittsburgh earned her the title of Grand Champion, the first for our record
books. Another impressive fact was that all wins were earned with Carol as the owner, breeder, handler of
Bridey, a beautiful bitch. Again congratulations Carol, Larry and Bridey! AKC is offering special awards
for the first ten dogs to achieve this prestigious award in each breed. For more information on these special awards and the rules/guidelines for Grand Champion look elsewhere in this issue. Many thanks to
Carol Kearney, who has started the Grand Champion Picture Gallery on the USKBTC's web site, which will
include all Kerries that get their Grand CH titles.
As the Summer days pass by we are rapidly approaching the Montgomery weekend. We have made significant changes in the futurity this year and hope these changes will make the event more interesting. Since
the futurity is a breeder's showcase we looked at other futurities. By opening the event to the "older"
youngsters we feel as breeders we are given an additional chance to evaluate just how breeding programs
are evolving. If you have a Kerry that will be 30 months or younger on October 9, 2010 you are eligible to
enter. For more details please check the centerfold in this issue of Blueprints. If you have any questions
or concerns just give me, Carol Wert or any board member a call.
I would also like to take this chance to thank our outgoing USKBTC Board members Susan Dunivant, Gigi
Reiling, Carl Ashby, and Charlie Redmon. The US Club and our Board have been very fortunate to have
had their service to the club. Their experience and commitment to our breed has been invaluable and we
have been privileged to have them on the Board. I wish them the best and thanks again.

A Letter from the Editor. . .
This has been a very difficult issue of Blueprints to put together. As most of you know
by now, the Kerry world lost Bob Nazak on 21 June quite unexpectedly. For those of
us who worked with him from time to time, it came as quite a shock. He will definitely
be missed!
Our cover shows the first USKBTC grand champion of record. I hope one and all will
extend a hearty congratulations to Larry and Carol Brown on this momentous accomplishment. I know they are very proud of this lovely bitch and her winning record.
In these pages you will find news of BIG changes to the Futurity, an explanation of the
Grand Champion award and how points are calculated and an important letter from
our Board of Governors about Coat Preparation in the Kerry blue terrier. You will also
find the usual listing of New Titleholders and show results, along with ads for upcoming specialties.
And now we need your input. Yes, YOURS! This magazine belongs to our members.
We always hope our chapter clubs will send their show ads to share with all the membership. We also hope you will submit articles to be considered for publication. Not
everyone accesses the internet or the USKB website to get their information. Sadly,
when I didn’t have the information for some specialties and went to the website, it
wasn’t always there either. COME ON FOLKS! Show us how much you love this
breed. Send articles of interest to me for inclusion in Blueprints, and to Carol and Bill
Kearney for the USKB website.

Futurity Changes!
Dear USKBTC Member:
As many of you know the Haymarket Futurity, held in conjunction with the National Specialty every October, has been an important part of our Club’s activities for over 20 years.
Over that period there has been virtually no change to this event although exhibition patterns have changed significantly. These changing patterns have resulted in a steady decline in entries over the past several years.
The USKBTC Board of Governors has been considering several changes to add new excitement to the Futurity and to make it more attractive to enter your young dogs. The first
change, which is being implemented at this year’s Futurity, is to add four additional
classes. These classes will be open to dogs and bitches 18- 24 months and 24- 30 months.
These classes will be judged in the same manner as the other Futurity classes are judged.
The winners of these 4 classes will compete for Best Senior Dog in Futurity. These classes
will not compete against the younger dogs. The result will be a Best Jr Dog in Futurity and
Best Sr Dog in Futurity and Best of Opposite Sex for both Jr and Sr dogs. Judging for the 4
new classes will be at the end of the traditional judging in order to allow dogs to return
from Devon.
For this year ONLY….a Kerry which falls in the age range of the two new classes, whether
they were originally nominated for the Futurity or not, will be eligible to compete provided they meet the other entry requirements. In 2011 and beyond, in order for a Kerry to
compete in these new classes, it must have been from a litter that was nominated for the
2010 Futurity and for which appropriate payments have been made. More details on this
will be available over the next several weeks regarding entry procedures.
We are excited about these changes and hope you will consider participating in the 2010
Haymarket Futurity. Our goal is to make the Futurity a highlight of the Kerry year and
your participation is key to its success. If you have any questions or concerns please call

Proper Presentation of a Kerry Blue Terrier’s Coat
To: Kerry Blue Terrier Breeders, Owners, and Handlers

We have recently noticed a disturbing trend in the breed ring. A small but growing number of
handlers, particularly professional handlers, are exhibiting Kerry Blue Terriers with coats that are
blown out straight, with all signs of wave removed, and then trimmed extremely short (1/2” or
less) on the body. While grooming and presentation in all breeds can and does change over time,
the Board of the USKBTC considers this current fad unacceptable, as it makes it impossible to
properly assess coat texture as called for in our Standard. Specifically, the Standard states,
“Correct coat is important. It is to be soft, dense and wavy. A harsh, wire or bristle coat should be
severely penalized. In show trim the body should be well covered but tidy, with the head (except
for the whiskers) and the ears and cheeks clear.”
The Kerry Blue Terrier Illustrated Standard further elaborates on coat, describing it as: “Silky,
soft, dense, with waves. The combination of these singularities of coat are unique to the Kerry
Blue Terrier. The single coat should always be soft, plentiful, dense and wavy. Marcel waves
should resemble finger waves, not curls or kinks. The texture is silky, not wooly or harsh. A fuzzy,
cotton coat is equally as improper as a harsh coat…In show trim the body should be well covered
but tidy, (coat should be [long enough to be] wavy and mold to the body like a well-fitting garment). On the head, (except for the whiskers), the throat, ears, and cheeks are clippered. The
rump and back of tail are trimmed close or clipped. A Kerry Blue coat shaped into a “poodle pack”
with every hair standing straight up, (stand away coat), showing no waves, is uncharacteristic and
is a major fault.” (p. 15)
Grooming the body coat correctly, leaving the appropriate length to develop a wave, not only allows a judge to more accurately evaluate the coat’s true color and texture, but makes any foreign
substances that may be used to enhance or disguise these very important breed characteristics
easier to detect.
In the past, when AKC breed standards were based on a point system, coat and color in Kerry Blue
Terriers merited a full 25 of the 100 available points. In our current standard, this is emphasized
in no less than three different places: General Appearance (“correct coat and color are important”); Coat (“correct coat is important”); and Color (“color is important”).
We ask that Kerry owners adhere to our breed standard and leave sufficient coat on their dogs
when they are being shown, refrain from blowing out or “packing” body coat, and not tolerate incorrect presentation by the handlers they employ to show their dogs.

anyone who wishes to study them.

New AKC Grand Champion Award!
Who is Eligible for Grand Champion competition?
The following categories of dogs are entered in this competition:
1. Dogs that are Champions of Record competing in Best of Breed or Best of Variety class.
2. Dogs transferred to Best of Breed/Variety which according to their owners’ records have completed the
requirements for a championship but whose championships are unconfirmed. (The showing of dogs whose
championships are unconfirmed is limited to a period of 90 days from the date of show where a dog completed the requirements for a championship according to the owners’ records.)
3. Champions that win Non-Regular Classes and become eligible for Best of Breed competition. (Altered
or spayed CH veteran class winners at independent specialties are eligible.)
Winners Dog and Winners Bitch are not eligible for Grand Champion competition.
At the judge’s discretion, Grand Championship points may be awarded to:
1. Best of Breed or Variety
2. Best of Opposite
3. Select Dog
Select Bitch
Grand Champion competition will not continue beyond Best of Breed competition and in breeds that are
divided into varieties, Grand Champion Competition will not continue beyond Best of Variety competition.
What are the requirements to earn the Grand Champion Title?
1. 25 Grand Champion points.
2. A minimum of 9 points won at 3 shows with ratings of 3 or more points (Major wins) under three different judges, and one or more of the balance of points won under a 4th judge.
At least one Champion of Record was defeated at three of these shows.
How are Grand Champion points computed?
1. Grand Champion points are only to be awarded to dogs the judge considers deserving.
2. Grand Champions points awarded to the Best of Breed/Variety shall count all dogs of both sexes competing in the regular classes and in Best of Breed/Variety competition.
3. Grand Champion points awarded to Best of Opposite Sex shall count all dogs of their sex competing in
the regular classes and in Best of Breed/Variety competition.
4. Grand Champion points awarded to Select Dog/Bitch shall count all dogs of their sex defeated in the
Best of Breed/Variety competition as well as the dogs of their sex in the regular classes. (i.e. one less than
the total entry in that sex)
The entry of non-regular classes are not counted for computation of Grand Champion points to be
awarded.
Judging Procedure
Choose BOB, BOW and BOS
If quality warrants, choose a Select Dog (SD) and Select Bitch (SB) from the remaining Champions in
the BOB ring (Do not consider BOW, WD or WB)
Annotate the judge’s book certification as to the eligibility and quality of the Grand Champion points being awarded or withheld.
Award BOB, BOW, SD and SB ribbons if determined to be of eligible and deserving of the Grand Champion title. See: http://www.akc.org/pdfs/judges_sheet_conformation.pdf for
example of the revised judge’s book form.
Administration
1. On May 12, 2010 Grand Champion competition will be included in all shows offering BOB or BOV com(Continued on page 10)

2. Premium lists – Other than prize listings, there is no requirement to address Grand Champion competition in the premium list since it is included in all shows that offer BOB or BOV. However, there is no restriction should superintendents and secretaries want to bring attention to the new competition.
3. Judging Schedule – No additional information is required.
4. Ribbons – BOB and BOS do not require an additional ribbon. Light blue & white ribbons for SD &
SB. Flat ribbons or rosettes are equally acceptable. “Select” is acceptable wording however “Grand
Champion Select” is acceptable and more descriptive.
Ring Markers – Just as with BOB, BOW and BOS, there is no AKC requirement to have SD and SB placement markers. These markers are provided as a service by the club or superintendent.

A Word from Charitable Funds…
As many of you know the US Kerry Blue Charitable Fund was established in 2002. Its purpose was to
serve the Kerry Blue Terrier in four important areas:
1) Rescue Fund – this fund supports grants used to provide Kerry Blue Terrier rescue services.
2) Health and Genetics Fund - this fund makes grants in support of research in areas of health and genetics of particular importance to the Kerry Blue Terrier.
3) Education Fund – the education fund supports education of all those interested in the Kerry Blue Terrier
including publications, websites, and seminars.
4) General Fund – donations to this fund are used to support the work of the other funds through internal
grants to those funds. Undesignated gifts will initially be held in this fund.
Since the Fund was established we have worked diligently to build the assets of the Funds while undertaking major support of the PNA Research being done at the University of Missouri. To date we have
awarded over $20,000 in grants to support Health and Genetics, Education, and Rescue. This is quite impressive, since our Fund is relatively new compared to other Parent Clubs whose equivalent organizations
are often decades older than ours.
Our current objective is to continue to grow fund assets while undertaking occasional substantial support
such as the PNA Grant. We believe the real key to long term growth will be planned giving that includes
the Funds in the wills of our members. Other comparable organizations have used this method as the key
to growing their assets. The reality is that we must grow our financial resources substantially in order to
having a meaningful impact and that means it will take many years to be in a position to have a significant
impact on our core areas.
You can help by considering making the Funds one of the recipients of your estate. In addition, support an
area of interest today. We have grown our asset base through small gifts and that will be crucial to our
future.

A safer “bug” repellant, shared by

Take part in the fun! Each chapter club is challenged to make a basket filled with items from their
area to be auctioned off at the Annual Dinner held
on Friday, October 8, 2010. The more unique items that are in
the basket, the more fun to auction off. All money raised
goes to the USKBTC Charitable Funds. If no one from your
club is attending the dinner you may send items to Jaimie
Ashby, 102 Manchester Place, NC 27410 and she will make a
basket for you. Items must be received by September 24th.

Mix in a garden sprayer, attach
hose and bye-bye fleas, ticks, ants
etc. Will not harm Birds or Dogs
and Cats ;-) Great to use on your
vegetable Garden!

REGISTER OF MERIT POLICY
The title of Register of Merit shall be awarded annually to the sire that has produced five AKC champions or four champions and a fifth published AKC titled get, and to the dam that has produced three AKC
champions or two champions and a third published AKC titled get.
(This is for a ROM completed between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009)

Those dogs that have made an outstanding contribution to the breed will be given special recognition.
Two additional levels of achievement may be attained:
Gold Rom
Sire of 40 AKC titled get or the Dam of 15 AKC titled get
Silver Rom
Sire of 25 AKC titled get or the Dam of 10 AKC titled get
A plaque will be awarded the owner at the Montgomery Annual Dinner.
