TRANQUILITY WHENEVER YOU NEED IT
Images of plants have been used to decorate ceramics
since ancient times, but in the eighteenth century porcelain
factories such as Chelsea and Derby in England, and the
Royal Copenhagen factory in Denmark, started a tradition
of using fine botanical prints to adorn dinner and dessert
services. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh has revived
this tradition with the Staffordshire firm of Roy Kirkham
& Company, using unique and previously unpublished
drawings from the Garden’s rich archive. The first image
to be used is a fuchsia drawn in around 1859 by an
anonymous Indian artist in the South Indian hill station of
Ootacamund.
