OVERVIEW The Rotary Club of Bandar Sunway held its 5th annual Interact Quiz at Sunway University on Saturday 4th August. This New Generations project gives Interactors opportunity to test their knowledge in a variety of subjects including science, history, geography, film and television. There were also special rounds of questions on Malaysia, Rotary and Interact. The quiz has become an eagerly anticipated event amongst Interactors with 160 teams taking part this year, an increase of 66 teams from the 2011 event. Teams consist of three members. There were Interactors from schools as far as Penang in the north of the District and Port Dickson in the south. 2. REPORT This project involved six months of planning by a 12-member organizing committee under the chairmanship of PP Dato’ Ram. Our strategic partner, Sunway Education Group (Sunway University) provided the venue and prizes for Interactors, but Rotarians from RCBS were involved in all aspects of managing the project. Planning began in January 2012 with the booking of the venue and setting of goals, namely to increase participation from 90 teams in 2011 to 160 teams in 2012. The registration process (handled by a subcommittee) involved contacting all Rotary Clubs in the District with Interact Clubs. Harvey Norman (Malaysia) also came on-board as one of the main sponsors. Prizes are not only awarded to the winning team members, but also to their school. Last year these prizes were computers and projectors. This year, Harvey Norman provided 42” flat screen televisions as prizes for the three schools of the top three teams. The competition itself was split into a preliminary round (160 teams) and the finals (top 6 teams). Each team consisted of three members and Interact Clubs could submit as many teams as they liked. This year the registration was free. Past President Movin Miranda was the quiz master for the competition. PP Movin, who has participated in many international quiz events including the BBC’s Mastermind show on British television, put together a challenging set of 30 questions for the preliminary round. Top score was 22. The finals involved six rounds of questions on challenging subjects. The programme also involved visiting Rotarians, Teacher Advisors and parents (approximately 100) with ‘on-the-spot’ questions with prizes for the right answer. Prizes included electrical items sponsored by Harvey Norman. District Governor Mansoor Saat was Guest of Honour and was supported by Rotarians from the District. All participating Interactors were presented with a certificate of participation and all went home with a goody bag containing a calculator/note pad with the Rotary logo. Press releases were made prior and post event. The winning team came from the Interact Club of SMK Subang Utama. Second placed was a team from the Interact Club of SMK Sultan Abdul Samad, PJ and the third placed team also came from SMK Subang Utama. 3. ANALYSIS District Governor Mansoor, in his speech, said that the 2012 Interact Quiz Challenge Trophy was one of the biggest single events of the District this year. Much work, time and effort had been put in by all members of RCBS and the result was a highly successful Club project. Whilst the event had been a great success, there were areas of the project which the organizing committee felt can be improved upon for next year. These include getting greater participation from Interact Clubs in all parts of the District and looking at making the event truly ‘National’ (possibly ‘international’) by including Interact Clubs from District 3310. The organizing committee agreed that the primary objectives had been met and that the increased participation this year had made it the most successful Interact Quiz held so far by RCBS. 4.
