the Principal
Dear Alumni, Parents, Grandparents, and Friends,
I am pleased to share this new issue of Friar Focus that highlights our continued
progress towards challenging our students with the rigors of a college preparatory
education that is centered on a high quality academic experience in a nurturing and
compassionate environment.
The Saint Anthony's experience of our most recent graduates, the Class of 2013,
continued in the footsteps of those proud alumni who have “walked“ before
them. Five hundred and sixty–four of the graduating class received $68,899,007 in
scholarships and non–need grants—an increase of $5,289,267 from the previous year.
I am particularly pleased to share with you that just a couple of weeks ago Saint
Anthony's welcomed six hundred and twenty-five young men and women as members
of the Class of 2017. Our enrollment continues to be strong as evidenced by our
student body of 2,518.
Facilities at Saint Anthony's are among the finest there are in secondary education on
Long Island. In the coming year, we will take another big step forward as our science
labs are targeted for significant capital enhancements.
The capital campaign ~ The Threshold of Hope ~ surpassed the $10 million mark on
our goal of $20 million. Thanks to the generosity of our parents, alumni and friends
and increased alumni participation the Annual Fund achieved a record level of support.
Athletics continued to experience great success in 2012-2013. Girls and Boys Soccer,
Ice Hockey, Wrestling, Girls Lacrosse, Girls Basketball, Girls Swimming, Boys and Girls
Cross Country, Boys and Girls Winter Track and Field, Boys Tennis, and Boys Spring
Track and Field all enjoyed memorable seasons.
We are truly blessed in so many ways. We have much to be thankful for and beginning
with our students, much to be proud of. With your continued prayers and support we
promise to continue to strive to make a difference for our students, our Franciscan
Community and our nation.

Legacy Endowment Fund
Eighty years ago the Franciscan Brothers
brought with them an 800 year-old
Franciscan tradition of excellence in
education. They founded Saint
Anthony's High School on the Franciscan
principle, “Capture the heart and the
mind will follow” and as a result, Saint
Anthony's has been a leader among college
preparatory schools in the United States.
The Saint Anthony's experience,
“Classmates for four years - Friars Forever”,
holds a special place in the hearts and
minds of more than 18,000 graduates.
These men and women, inspired by the
vision and nurturing of the Franciscan
Brothers and a dedicated and supportive
corps of religious and lay faculty, have
ventured on to contribute significantly
to our nation through their leadership
positions in government, religion,
business, industry, science, the arts,
education, journalism, communications,
athletics and the armed forces.
Values and ideals are embodied in
people and are not transmitted
through words, documents, bricks
or mortar but through lives. Saint
Anthony's has been blessed with
people whose contributions to the
school and its students have been
immeasurable. They continue to
leave their indelible marks and
enrich every student who attends
Saint Anthony's.

One of the many attributes of Saint
Anthony's today is its ability to attract
and serve a highly diverse student body.
The 2,518 students currently in attendance
come from every social and economic
background and find their way to school
every day from Manhattan to Montauk.
Today the operating budget stands
at $25,000,000. Tuition for the 2013-2014
academic year is $8,950 and nearly 15%
of our current student body received
some amount of financial aid based strictly
on need.
The long-term goal of the “Legacy
Endowment Fund" is to provide for
the continued fiscal stability of Saint
Anthony’s High School.

Dear Friar Faithful,
Dear Friars,
Thanks to the support of our alumni, parents, grandparents
and friends, Saint Anthony's is enabled to continue its mission
and important work in developing the hearts, minds and lives
of our students. This development takes place in many settings
whether it be academically, spiritually, musically, socially,
charitably or athletically. The interaction between our students
and faculty, staff and coaches whether it be in the classroom,
on retreats, pilgrimages, in the hallways or on the athletic
fields is all part of the unique Saint Anthony's experience.
Recently, I was going through some notes from an old lecture I had
attended on the life of our patron Saint Francis of Assisi. Among the
distracted doodlings and disjointed notes, I found a clearly written quote
attributed to Saint Francis. It jumped off the page at me. "If God can
work through me, he can work through anyone." I have no recollection
of jotting the quote down, but it obviously has significance to me today.
As the Director of Alumni, I rely heavily on the support and contacts with
our Friars. Much of my day is spent tracking down missing Alumni and
adding accurate addresses and phone numbers to our database. Over
the past two years, my office has made nearly 3,000 corrections and
updates to the database and we will diligently continue with this
endeavor. The more personal aspect of my day is the far more fulfilling.
In this economy I hear many disheartening stories of layoffs and financial
woes. Sadly, there are many families who are experiencing great medical
and emotional difficulties. When such situations are brought
to my office, I turn to those people who I know will help - Fellow Friars.
Oftentimes I reach out to Alumni and ask a huge favor and I have yet
to be turned down. Friars are always willing to help out when they can.
On a daily basis I am reminded of just how much our Alumni embody all
the Franciscan ideals of compassion and service. God continually works
through the Alumni of Saint Anthony's and I consider myself blessed to
witness it.
The values of a Franciscan education have never been more
needed than in the world in which our students find
themselves today. Your generous support, whether it be the
Capital Campaign, Annual Fund, Legacy Endowment Fund,
Gala, Athletic Sponsorships, Golf Classic, Fashion Show or
the Alumni Golf Outing, makes it all possible for this important
work to continue. I thank you most sincerely for all that you
do that enables the values of Franciscan education to continue
and to thrive here at Saint Anthony's High School.
I respectfully ask for your continued prayers for our Franciscan
Brothers who exemplify charity every day through their selfless
giving, caring and compassion for all.
This 2013–2014 academic year promises to be one of new
beginnings, new undertakings and great accomplishments.

I also have the privilege of hearing of the great accomplishments of our
Alumni. Some Alumni I am meeting for the very first time while others
have been in my classroom over the past 30 years. Regardless of my
personal connection, I find the success of Friar Alumni to be a great
source of pride. Again, it reminds me that we here at Saint Anthony's
are a family and are proud of our Friars.

Medals of Distinction
At the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony in May, four members of the faculty and staff were honored for their exemplary
service and commitment to Saint Anthony's High School. Receiving the Deus Meus et Omnia Medallion for twenty-five years' service was
Sister Mary Niles Capasso, O.P. In recognition of fifteen years' service the San Damiano Medallion was awarded to Mrs. Deborah Fahey,
Ms. Anne Ferrara and Mr. Michael McAuliffe.

National Honor Society
This past May, 301 sophomores, juniors
and seniors were inducted into Saint
Anthony’s chapter of the National Honor
Society. Membership in the NHS recognizes
scholarship, service, leadership and
character. At this ceremony the 2013-2014
NHS Executive Board was installed and the
2012-2013 board members were thanked
for their service.

Choosing to Serve
Over the past year, three of our Saint Anthony's Alumni have made a commitment to religious life - Deacon Robert Gross '02, Father David
Monteleone '90 and Pastor Jonathan Crawford '05.
On May 11th, 2013, Robert Gross was ordained as a Deacon at the Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, PA. Bobby is the son
of Bob and Mary Gross and intends to continue his studies and become a Priest next year. Brother Gary, Brother Joshua, Brother Robert,
Brother Richard and Brother Vincent travelled to Philadelphia to be part of this blessed day.
On May 25th, 2013, former faculty member David Monteleone was ordained as a Priest at Saint Philip the Apostle Church in Clifton, NJ.
David is the son of former Global teacher Mrs. Agatha Monteleone and her husband Anthony. On June 2nd, Father David celebrated
a Mass of Thanksgiving at his home parish of Saint Patrick's in Smithtown. Brother Gary, Brother Joshua, Brother Richard, Philomena
Clement and Denise Creighton attended the Mass and reception to celebrate with Father David and his family.
On June 22nd, Jonathan Crawford was ordained a Pastor in Saint Luke's Lutheran Church in Dix Hills. The Saint Anthony's Schola, under
the direction of Brother Joshua, sang alongside the Saint Luke's Choir. Brother Gary, Brother Richard, Christopher Farrell, Brother Vincent
and Denise Creighton shared in this blessed event. Pastor Jonathan will be serving the Congregation of Saint Paul in Dubuque, Iowa.
We ask that you pray for these young men and all those who have chosen to serve in the religious life. We are truly blessed with such
wonderful vocations!

Family of Distinction
The Black & Gold Gala has developed into a wonderful night for alumni, parents, grandparents and friends to celebrate Saint Anthony's. Over
the last seven years the Gala has become Saint Anthony's marquee event.
As it has become our tradition to honor a "Family of Distinction" at the Gala, Saint Anthony's High School is pleased and privileged to announce
the Gentile Family as its 2013 Family of Distinction.
Since 2003, the Gentile Family has been ever present at numerous events and functions and they have been extraordinarily generous in their
support of our development efforts at every turn. Anthony Gentile. Sr., the proud patriarch of the family, sadly passed away earlier this year and
is survived by his lovely wife, Vivian, their five children and their spouses: Chris and Maureen Gentile, Anthony and Kim Gentile, Steven and
Terri Gentile, Stephen and Valerie Eger, and Paul and Melissa Gentile – as well as seventeen grandchildren, including: Jessica'07, Stephanie'08,

The scope of the Saint Anthony's Performing Arts Program was
center stage at the annual Spring Concert. The audience was treated
to wonderful and moving performances by the Chorus, Concert Band,
Symphonic Band, Orchestra, and Jazz Band. The Performing Arts
Program is comprised of nearly fifteen hundred students and is
certainly one of the signature programs at Saint Anthony's.

Friarquest
Friarquest, the Saint Anthony's
High School Science Research
Program, has dramatically increased
in size since it was founded three
years ago. Mr. Paul Paino introduced
the program with twelve ambitious
seniors in the fall of 2011. This year
we begin the 2013-14 school year
with approximately seventy
exceptional and highly qualified
students in grades nine through
twelve. Many of our 2013-14
seniors and some of our exceptional
underclassmen are currently spending
their summer in laboratories
conducting "cutting edge" research
as members of professional lab teams
in world-renowned institutions such
as SUNY Stony Brook, Brookhaven
National Laboratory and Hofstra
University. Their projects attempt
to answer questions in astrophysics,
biomedical engineering, molecular
biology, computer science and
renewable energy sources to name
a few. Other returning upperclassmen
have chosen to examine factors
affecting people and society as
members of our behavioral science
team. These experienced members
of Friarquest will be writing
professional research papers and

This past April, 8 students from the Saint
Anthony's High School Rocket and Aviation
Club have gone to where no others from
the school have gone before.
They went to NASA's Marshall Space Flight
Center in Huntsville, Alabama to successfully
launch and return an 8 foot long, high
powered rocket about 1 mile into the sky at
over 700 mph. The rocket was also required
by NASA to successfully carry a recoverable
scientific experimental payload. This payload
was recovered and three members of the
team will be submitting the results of their
experiment into the upcoming 2013 Intel
Science Competition.

This awesome experience was part of NASA's
8 month long student launch project (SLP).
In order to qualify for the NASA SLP program,
the team needed to finish in the top 25 out
of 700 high schools in the Team America
Rocketry Challenge (TARC). These brainiacs
finished 24th! Absolutely Awesome! And
because of the team's successes, NASA
has invited them back again this year to
reconfigure a new high-powered rocket
and give it another go. They can't wait!
The Rocket and Aviation Club is always
keeping its student members on the edges
of their seats. Whether it's from lectures from
Jones Beach Airshow daredevil stunt pilot,
David Windmiller, or a tour of one of New
York's busiest air traffic control towers or
from building TARC and NASA rockets,
the kids are having fun while learning.
To kick things off for the club this October,
the school has just confirmed that NASA
will be sending Mr. Keith Walyus from the
Goddard Space Flight Center to speak on
campus. Mr. Walyus has over 24 years of
experience in mission systems engineering
at NASA. He served for 4 years as an officer
in the United States Air Force at NASA's
Johnson Space Center. Among his many
accomplishments at NASA, he was the lead
engineer on the space shuttles decent design
system and was the systems engineer for the
Hubble space telescope. If you are interested

When Friar Eyes are Smiling
The Friar Celtic Pipe Band, under the
direction of Mr. Frank Riggio, and led
by our very own Athletic Director/Drum
Major Donal Buckley, was extremely
busy bringing their music to the masses.
On March 16th, the Friars marched up
5th Avenue in the New York City Saint
Patrick's Day Parade. Despite the rain,
sleet and snow, the band played
incredibly well. On May 4th, the band
was featured in The Evening of Celtic
Music, sponsored by the Alumni
Department. Joined by the Friar Choir,
The Bob Weiss Band (which includes
Alumni/Theology teacher Miss Laura
Giannuzzi '00), the Inishfree School of
Irish Dance and singer/guitarist Gerard
Donnelly, the band played some
standards and many new songs.
The evening was concluded with their
debut performance of "Danny Boy",
which was dedicated to our beloved
former Principal, Brother Shane Burke!
Both the parade and the Evening of
Celtic Music were GRAND events!

In what is becoming a wonderful
tradition, over 100 children with
special needs along with their families
attended the Friars Golden Kids Carnival
at Saint Anthony's High School on May
18. Over 300 current Saint Anthony's
students served as buddies and activity
leaders for these children. Faculty
and staff members as well as the
Mothers' and Fathers' Guilds helped
to organize and run the event. The
children enjoyed jumping in the bounce
house, going down the inflatable slide,
and running through the obstacle
course. They also loved dancing to
the music, playing sports, blowing
bubbles, and joining in carnival games,
coloring, and face painting. Lunch
was served later in the day in the
cafeteria. Saint Anthony's looks
forward to hosting its next carnival
on Sunday May 4, 2014 so please
save the date!

During the months of June and July, 406 solar panels
were installed on the roof of the school. Subsidized by a
$174,000 rebate from LIPA, Brother Gary and the Board
of Trustees are beginning a three-year plan to go green.
The school's solar panels will generate more than 119,000
kilowatt hours annually. According to Jean-Pierre Clejan,
a Senior Energy Consultant at Greenlogic Energy, the
Southampton based company that designed and installed
the panels, they will displace 6 million pounds of carbon
over a 30-year lifespan.
Brother Gary Cregan stated, "We have to do this to show
our students we are serious. Now, alternative energy sources
are not just something in our textbooks. It's on our roof."
Michael Rudden, Class of 2011, was thrilled at this movement
to become more environmentally aware. Michael states, "As
both a Catholic and an environmentalist, I have often admired
Saint Francis for his compassion towards all God's creation. In
a world where the Earth has been exploited, Saint Francis saw
himself, and all of humanity, as caretakers of the planet and
its inhabitants. "Upon reading of the solar panels, Michael
said, "When I heard the Franciscan Brothers and Saint
Anthony's High School were taking actions to reduce their
carbon footprint, I couldn't help but feel a greater sense of
pride in my Alma Mater. Such a decision reflects the character,
courage and compassion that I've so long admired about
Saint Anthony's and your religious order."

Saint Anthony ’s High School 24th Annual Golf Classic
Over time, the Saint Anthony's Golf Classic has become a truly extraordinary
event because of the people who have committed themselves to making
the Golf Classic so successful beginning with the Chairman, Ronnie Wright,
Chairman Emeritus, Tony Trombino, Joe Graci, Bob Bellotti, Jeff Sartorius,

bestowed on Joe Graci, the 2013 Man of the Year. Joe was joined

BARNUM
For the annual Spring Musical this past year, the Saint Anthony's
High School Theatre Company performed Barnum. The show
was written by Mark Bramble and featured music by Cy Coleman
and lyrics by Michael Stewart. This spectacle of color and effects
provided three straight nights of entertainment for the
audiences. The show is based on the life of showman P.T. Barnum
and takes place between 1835 and 1880. It tells the story of his
rise from a small town talent peddler to world-class entertainer
and circus producer. The story of his progression is full of
interesting characters, comedic happenings and even a little
love drama. In an unusual writing technique, the character of
Barnum sometimes steps away from the action and speaks to
the audience directly. It is a show in which he is aware that
people are watching the story of his life and he offers
commentary and explanations.
The show dazzled audiences with large company numbers,
featuring top-notch choreography and exceptional vocal talents.
Songs such as, "Come Follow The Band", "Black and White" and
"Join the Circus" showcased the high level of talent that students
possess here at Saint Anthony's HIgh School. With a mix of hightempo performances and ballads, the show allowed many
students the opportunity to showcase their abilities. The cast
was made up of over thirty students and allowed for many to
be featured as dancers, speaking parts or vocalists. Led by Senior
Tommy Daly as Barnum, the show's leads were exceptional. Junior
Grace O'Neill starred as Charity Barnum, Senior Anthony Sarra
played James Bailey, Senior Christina Farah performed the role
of Joyce Heth, Junior Aria Laucella played the Blues Singer and
Sophomores Arianna Paz, Christian Arma and Ian Greiner played
the roles of Jenny Lind, Tom Thumb and the Ringmaster,
respectively. The supporting cast dazzled audiences each night

and was filled by Seniors Claire Barbier, Alexa Fleck and Alissa
Guerra, Juniors Frank Murdocco, Lauren Kneessy, Nichole
McCormick, Shaina Sweeney, Erin Hughes, Laura Sanchez
and Emily Shea, Sophomores James Vicari, Jake Kaplan,
Joey Wendt and Elizabeth Rains, Freshmen Ryan Sansiviero,
Samantha Fitzgerald, Briana Scalia, Nell Worden, Lindsay
Palmeri, Katelyn Piotrowicz, Victoria Messina, Zoe Neyer and
Bitsy Triscari. This impressive group of young actors kept the
audience thoroughly entertained from curtain to curtain
each night.
Adding to the great success of this production was a talented
and dedicated stage crew lead by their two chiefs, Nick Graci
and Faith Gillen. Lighting master Nick Graci and sound master
Kevin Culleton designed an impressive technical show to
complement a stunning set built by the rest of the crew. Scene
changes were perfectly timed and special effects were carried
out masterfully. Faith Gillen led a large group of painters in
putting finishing touches on the set and putting together
beautiful advertisements that brought in large crowds for
all three performances. This year Faith actually designed the
artwork for the show. All of the posters and the marquee
featured her original design.
With the Spring Musical being the last show of the year, it was
very difficult to say goodbye to all of the seniors. Each of them
was a valued member of the theatre program and will be missed
greatly. All of their hard work, dedication and talent has helped
the program become the success that it currently is. The Saint
Anthony's Theatre Company should be proud of the successful
year it had and the entire school is looking forward to another
year of wonderful performances in 2013-2014. Barnum lived
up to its billing - the Greatest Show on Earth!

Center. The hallway adjacent

filled with student artwork.
The walls were covered with

in a second art studio, and
ceramic pieces in a small
gallery area.
The Art Show gives our
talented art students a venue
to display their creative
accomplishments and provides

Senior Phillip Losquadro has been
selected as a member of the 2013 NAfME
(National Association for Music Education)
All National Honor Ensemble for Mixed
Choir. This is a very selective group for
which NAfME received a record number
of applicants this year. Phillip will be traveling

In June a ceremony was held in the Senior Courtyard to bless a plaque
dedicated to Mr. William Payoski, a beloved science teacher who passed
away suddenly in November 2012. In an effort spearheaded by his senior

and remember a well-loved and respected man.

Alumni
On May 29th, 2013 at Club 101 in New York City, Gamma Chapter
of Gamma Epsilon Tau, the National Graphic Arts Honor Society,
honored Mike Connors at its annual Gold Key Ceremony.
The Gamma Gold Key Award was presented to Mike Connors,
Managing Director, Production Department, The New York Times.
Starting his career with the newspaper in 1976 as a mailroom
feeder, he became a member of the department's management
team in 1984 and went on to run it from 1998 to 2004. That year,
he became Deputy Plant Manager, and in 2008 he was promoted
to his current position.
Connors was recognized by Gamma
Chapter for his steadfast support of industry
education. As coordinator of Diversity Events
at The Times production plant in College
Point, Queens, he directs the mentoring
program with the Queens Satellite High School
for Opportunity and also supports the GED
Plus Program in the Bronx. He is an active
member of the industry advisory commission
to the High School of Graphic Communication
Arts and the New York City Department of
Education's CTE (Career and Technical
Education) program.
Mike Connors '78
In March 2012, Connors partnered with
PENCIL as the career development business
partner for the GED Plus program, which
aims at inspiring innovation and greater
student achievement by partnering business
leaders with public schools. He also helped to
initiate a paid student intern program at the
Times College Point facility, where he organizes the annual
golf fundraiser. In its fifth year, the event will provide $30,000
for programs assisting learning and physically challenged children
at PS 107, the Hour Children Program, St. Mary's Hospital, and
The Catherine McCauley Center.
Mike, a fourth generation Connors at the NY Times, is going into his
37th year at the prestigious paper. Despite his time away from the
Old School, Mike has many fond memories. Three teachers had the
most lasting effect on Mike's life. Back in the mid-seventies, Brother
Cletus Burke was a History teacher and the Dean of Discipline. Mike
said, "Brother Cletus was a very firm, yet fair man, understanding
that things happen, and he treated each person with respect. In the
classroom, he was the same, giving respect while expecting the same
in return. His style offered us a great opportunity to learn more than
history, we also found time to laugh a little too!"

Oftentimes when Mike meets a French speaking person, he fondly
remembers Brother Donan Conrad. "Through Brother Donan's
vigilance in teaching French to us, I have managed, after all these
years, to actually remember quite a bit of it. His dedication to the
students, school, Order and many initiatives around campus were
admirable." A lifetime impression was made on Mike by Mr. Vincent
Tenety, his Accounting teacher. In speaking of Mr. Tenety, Mike
states, "He was vision impaired, yet that never held him back
from being an excellent teacher and, more importantly, a real life
example of character and fortitude. He was prepared for class every
day with his faithful companion, his service dog Opal. Mr. Tenety
earned immeasurable respect from me, more now maybe than
at the time. God bless him."
There are many things that cause Mike to say he wouldn't trade his
four years at Saint Anthony's for any four in his life. He reminisces,
"I still believe that those four were as valuable and more enriching
than most college classes. Tack on the camaraderie, team spirit,
many great lifetime friends (RIP Paul Hornik), the Franciscan Way
and Athletics; it was unforgettable. I particularly enjoyed managing
the basketball team, filming football and playing golf while there.
I was busy year round!" Mike is a true embodiment of "Classmates
for four years, Friars Forever." He is a Friar through and through and
we are so happy for his great success and his continued support of
Saint Anthony's High School.

Blessing of the Shields
The Annual Friar Alumni Blessing of the Shields Mass was held on January 24th in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels. The Mass, which is open
to all Alumni Firefighters, Police, First Responders and Military and their families, included a Blessing of the Shields rite where we ask for God's
protection over those who take such great personal risk in order to protect us each day. Our celebrant was Father Sean Gann, Holy Name Society
Chaplain and pastor at Saint Joseph's Church in Kings Park. The Friar Celtic Pipe Band played a stunning rendition of "Amazing Grace" and our
Saint Anthony's High School Schola provided the Mass with stirring music. Mass was followed by refreshments and an afternoon of fraternity in
the cafeteria. We look forward to seeing this event continue to grow each year.

Moran
5K Race
On March 23rd, 2013, 200 Friars ran in the 2nd Annual Kerry
Moran 5K Race in honor of former Saint Anthony's Girls Cross
Country Coach, Kerry Moran. This race benefits both Saint
Anthony's and the KJM Foundation for Head Injuries. The event
was well-attended by Coach Moran's girls and fellow Friars, past
and present. Great thanks to our Alumni who helped out with
the race—Race Coordinators Bobby Farrelly '05, John DeSpagna
'81 and Emily Lanzo '05. Thanks, too, to our Alumni Moms who
are always willing to help out—Mrs. Ginny Farrelly, Mrs. Anne
McShane and Mrs. Virginia Regan. A true Friar Family event!

In 1984 Brother Gary Cregan took a small group of his students on a Saturday field trip to The Cloisters.
That trip is one that Phil Daileader will never forget for it was on that trip that his interest in Medieval
History was initially sparked. At the time, Phil was unaware of the path that was before him.
Phil graduated from Saint Anthony's in 1986 and went on to earn his Bachelor's Degree from
Johns Hopkins and his Ph.D in History from Harvard University. While at Harvard, he was a fourtime recipient of The Harvard University Certificate of Distinction in Teaching. Upon graduation,
Phil went on to teach Medieval History at the University of Alabama and SUNY New Paltz before
becoming the Chairman of the History Department at the College of William and Mary in 1998.
He is a distinguished author of multiple books/dvds on Medieval History in The Great Courses
series. His accomplishments are bountiful.
Phil Daileader credits many of his Saint Anthony's teachers for teaching him how to teach.
Although unaware at the time, Philip says that his high school teachers taught him many,
many lessons that were not necessarily subject related.
Of Brother Gary, Philip states, “Brother Gary taught me enthusiasm. He taught me that History
is about asking good questions. Brother started each class with a question. Through his classes,
I learned that History is not about memorizing details but rather about asking the good questions.”
From Brother Etienne Philip learned that teaching was about ideas. He recalls Brother Etienne as a
serious scholar. “I could listen to him lecture about anything. He would captivate us with his ideas.”

The Making of a Professor
From Brother John Lawrence Phil learned, “We should ALWAYS sweat the small stuff. No detail is
too small to be ignored.” Philip remembers Brother John teaching rigor and instilling in his students
a true sense of pride in their work.
Of Mrs. Lorraine Becker and Brother Donan Conrad, Philip said he learned compassion and
kindness. He stated, “Both Mrs. Becker and Brother Donan taught me that you have to build a
rapport with your students, which comes from true concern. That rapport will naturally lead to
the students giving them respect.” He went on to say, “Mrs. Becker taught me that I could earn
respect through concern for my students as human beings.” Philip said he had no idea that these
were the lessons he was learning at the time, but once he was actually in the classroom himself
he realized the many lessons he had learned here at Saint Anthony‘s.
When not pursuing his academic endeavors, Phil enjoys spending time with his lovely wife Carol
Sheriff and his two young children, Anna, 10, and Benjamin, 11.

Saint Anthony's Alum Doreen Sackman was named the 2014 Florida Department of
Education/Macy's Teacher of the Year on July 10, 2013 at a Gala held at the Hard Rock
Live at Universal City Walk in Orlando. Doreen was one of 72 Finalists. As the winner of the
title, Doreen received a $10,000 grant and an all-expense paid trip to NYC for the Macy's
Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Doreen teaches 8th graders at Westridge Middle School in Orange County, FL. The Title I
school has many ESL students and students with socioeconomic difficulties. Many of
Doreen's students have recently arrived in the US as a result of political asylum, natural
disaster or as refugees. Doreen, who speaks 5 languages, engages her students with her
enthusiasm and compassion for teaching. "I prepare my students for a successful future
by letting them know they have one." she states. Each of Doreen's students receives the
attention and knowledge he or she needs to do well academically. Doreen sees her mission
as "empowering them to empower themselves."
Dorina Sackman ’90—
Florida State Teacher of the Year
Dorina, as her friends call her, refers to a John Lennon quote when she thinks about why
she loves teaching. Lennon once said, "When I was 5-years-old, my mother always told
me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what
I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy.' They told me I didn't understand
the assignment. I told them, they didn't understand life." Doreen knows that being happy
is key to all her success. She states, "I have deep feelings about teaching and believe in
teaching because I am happy. Students connect with me because I am happy when I see
their faces. My classroom is a model for instruction because I am happy to make it that
way. My learning gains are high because I am happy when those light bulbs go off above
their heads. I am called an "innovative" teacher because I am happy to be one!"
Doreen makes every effort to know her students' backgrounds and lives, both in and out
of the classroom. She sometimes has up to 11 different countries represented in her small
classroom and she makes every effort to visit each of those countries so that she might have
a better understanding of the kids she deals with. She gets involved with and shows up for
the students' activities and outside interests. All of her efforts lead not only to her students'
success but also to Doreen's happiness.
Doreen Sackman, congratulations on being named Florida State Teacher of the Year! It is a
much deserved honor!

1980's through this year came to their old
stomping grounds for a rather enthusiastic
and determined game. Coordinated by
graduate and Coach Marc Sambach,
the players look forward to seeing each
other each year and seeing who can
outlast whom. The game was followed
by a reception in Superior's lobby. A great
time was had by all.

Kevin
Cavanagh '92
When Kevin Cavanagh was a senior at Saint Anthony's he, like so many others,
was struggling with making the decision as to where to attend college. It was
down to two choices. After many sleepless nights, Kevin went to his History
teacher Brother Gary Cregan and asked for some guidance. Kevin recalls Brother
Gary ("ever the showman") reaching into his pocket in his robe and pulling out
three pink phone messages. Brother Gary stated, "These are messages from
three students who are unhappy at School A, you should choose School BManhattan." Kevin recalls feeling as if the weight of the world was off his
shoulders. He enrolled in Manhattan and could not have been happier. Kevin's
college career was jam packed with activity. Although he was among the first
Schola members who sang under the direction of Brother Joshua, he did not
pursue his musical interests at Manhattan. He was, however, an Honors student
with a major in History and a double minor in Religion and Business. Having been
one of the founding members of the Saint Anthony's Crew Team, Kevin rowed
for four years at Manhattan. Upon graduation, Kevin was offered a position at
Manhattan as an Admissions and Financial Aid Counselor.
Kevin continued his education while working at Manhattan and received his
MBA in Business Management. He also became involved in a three year Christian
Brothers training program for laity to be trained in the charism of the Church and
graduation from the LaSallian Leadership Institute. Kevin rose to the position of
Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at Manhattan.
While at Manhattan, Kevin met his wonderful wife, Kristin, and the two were
married on campus. When their now 3-year-old daughter Emma was born,
she was baptized at Manhattan. The school remains an important part of the
Cavanagh family history. In 2007, Kevin was offered and accepted the position
of Assistant Vice President for College Admissions at Iona College. The transition
between the two regional Liberal Arts, Catholic colleges was an easy one. While
at Iona, Kevin became much more involved with Graduate as well as
Undergraduate admissions.
In 2012, Kevin made a very significant career change. Kevin left the comfort of
Iona and moved to Glen Rock, NJ and took on the position of Senior Director of
Enrollment Services at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The school,
which is the 18th ranked medical school in the United States, was quite different
than Kevin's prior positions. The school is located on the Upper East Side of
Manhattan, no sprawling campus but rather a NYC high-rise. Kevin finds his
position incredibly stimulating and satisfying. Medical school is far more
competitive and Kevin finds himself involved in some cutting edge topics: online
learning programs, the effects of healthcare changes on higher education,
funding and research. He did initially notice a big difference in this position, He
states, " The one thing that I noticed that I missed is the Catholic element. From
the time I was in kindergarten to the time I left Iona I was entrenched in Catholic
education." In short time, Kevin recognized that there are wonderful people at
Mount Sinai and was pleased with the change.
When able, Kevin enjoys getting together with his siblings and their families.
Michael, a member of the Class of 1984, and he share the Friar bond. His older
sister, Kathy is a 1982 graduate of Saint John the Baptist. Unfortunately for Kathy,
the Friars were not yet accepting girls in the early 1980's. However, the Cavanagh
family shares a common respect and regard for Catholic education and all are
products of great schools.
Congratulations, Kevin, on your position and we look forward to seeing you at a
Christmas Concert or Alumni event!

The Digital World of
Jonathan McCarthy ’92
Any Long Islander who has a connection to a high school student has a connection to MSG Varsity, the local television
channel devoted to covering all things high school related. Our Saint Anthony's students have been seen often on
MSG—our athletes in Games of the Week, our scholars on The Long Island Challenge, our artists on MSG Talent Show.
Friar Alum Jonathan McCarthy '92 is largely responsible for the success of the channel in his role as Cablevision Vice
President of Digital Platforms. John's love of journalism was sparked here at Saint Anthony's in The Anthonian Office
where he served as Photography Editor. Those long hours of manual layout of all the school news that was fit to print
obviously paid off. Upon graduation, Jonathan attended Sacred Heart University and pursued his journalistic dreams.
When Jonathan was at Sacred Heart, his profession did not even exist. It was during his senior year of college when
assigned to create the first-ever online edition of the college newspaper, that McCarthy knew this was the work that
would allow him to combine everything he loved to do. "Looking back it was pretty awful, but for the time it worked,"
he said. His passion for digital media has never wavered. McCarthy started his professional career at Newsday.com as
assistant news manager. In his 15 years with Newsday, he was promoted to Editor and eventually Assistant Managing
Editor of Cross Media. In this role, he helped integrate digital journalism into the print newsroom. His leadership was
key in implementing major initiatives and successfully helped build Newsday.com to an award winning website.
While working at Newsday.com, McCarthy also helped develop Stony Brook University's online journalism curriculum.
At a very young age, he was mentoring students, teaching them and introducing them to journalism's new era.
McCarthy left Newsday in February 2011 to become Vice President of Digital Platforms for MSG Varsity, Cablevision's
television network dedicated to "everything high school." In a short period of time, he's led his team to redesign its
website, streamline the digital production workflow in each of the MSG Varsity regions and help develop a new
iPhone/iPad application. McCarthy categorized his year at MSG Varsity as "amazing." But he has to go back to
2005 for his proudest achievement, when Newsday set out to explain the true cost of the Iraq war. "My job
was to translate this powerful series in a way that helped our online readers grasp the completeness of the
reporting and to visually see the impact the war was having, especially here on Long Island," he said.
The project included graphics of civilian and soldier casualties, how a soldier was equipped, a timeline
of key events, and the impact on both countries. The endeavor won an Award of Distinction at the
Knight-Batten Awards for Innovations in Journalism, with the judges praising the project by
stating it "sets a new bar for telling fact-dense stories in compelling ways."
Jonathan has come a long way from his days as Photography Editor in The Anthonian
Office and serves as a wonderful example to our Friars looking to pursue a career
in journalism.

Smithtown
Reunion
In March, we once again held our Smithtown Reunion/Dinner Dance
at Flowerfield in Saint James. At the well attended event, we had
some very special guests from the Class of 1963 celebrating their
50 year Reunion. On Sunday, we had a beautiful Mass and what
turned into an afternoon of reminiscing about the "old school"
and the Juniorate. It was a fantastic weekend!
The Dinner Dance will be held again in 2014 with a slight alteration.
We will of course be honoring the Class of 1964 as our 50 Year
Class, but we are also reinstating the Friar Hall of Fame. Invitations
will be sent at the beginning of the year and we look forward to
bringing together a great group of Alumni!

Class of 2003 10-Year Reunion
On July 20th, the Class of 2003 celebrated their 10-Year Reunion at the Huntington Hilton. Classmates had a great evening of sharing
stories of their time at Saint Anthony's, dancing to the rhythms of DJ Medic and enjoying the cuisine at the Huntington Hilton. It was
great to see all of these old friends back together! They may be all over the country, but they are Friars Forever!

Katie Finnegan, Class of 2001, did not originally set out to be the rising star of the tech
world. Upon graduation from Saint Anthony's, Katie attended Colgate University and
majored in history and religion. After she completed her degree, she entered the world
of retail and did some time at American Eagle Outfitters and, in January 2006, brought
her talents to J.Crew where she worked primarily in pricing, promotion and consumer
insight. It was at J.Crew that she met her current business partner, Erica Bell.
In 2008, Katie made the decision to attend Duke University in order to pursue an MBA
in Corporate Finance and Strategy. She loved her days in North Carolina and received
an incredible education. Post MBA, Katie returned to NY and worked in Management
Consulting for A.E. Carney. There she worked on high intensity projects, where she
would have 12 weeks or less to solve major problems. She was particularly happy
when her former J.Crew partner Erica joined her at Carney. However, the two realized
something was missing and the problem needed resolution. Katie and Erica realized
how much they missed their J.Crew Employee Discount! The two loved to shop, but
hated paying full price. Something needed to be done!
Trained as problem solvers, the two came up with a plan. After much work with
developers and web designers the two created an app called Hukkster.com. Hukkster
allows the consumer to enter product information (size, color, brand, etc.) and the
consumer receives all discounting/inventory information on his or her IPhone or
computer. In 2011, the two released their MVP (most viable product) and soon the
investors came calling. Two of their investors, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, shared
their vision and were willing to become lead investors in the product. Today,
Hukkster.com is consistently growing and very successful.

Katie has not forgotten where she came from, however. Recently, she agreed
to speak with a younger Alumnus in her office regarding his developing app.
She was a wealth of information and guidance to this young man. She says
of Saint Anthony's, "The Saint Anthony's community is huge. But when
you were there it felt like a small place, it was no different than other
schools. We have been very supported by our fellow Friars and we are
not afraid to ask favors of anyone. It is a ridiculously large, supportive
community which I just thought was the norm." Her family ties to
Saint Anthony's continue to be strong. Often at their weekly Tuesday
night family dinner the Finnegan siblings reminisce about their time in
South Huntington. Although Danny '99 currently lives with his wife
and daughter in Philadelphia, the rest of the Finnegan Clan—Katie,
Shane '05, Izzy '09 and Joey '10— make sure they see a lot of each
other in Manhattan. Izzy and Joey, along with Sophia Lauricella '08,
all work together in the Hukkster office. Despite working a sevenday workweek, Katie is very content and happy with her life and
the success of Hukkster.
We wish Katie continued success with Hukkster.com. Take a

Methodist Church in New Fairfield, CT. He is also a piano instructor
for Guitar Center, co-owner of a web based songwriting company
TheMusicCrafters.com, and a gigging musician in the NY/CT/NJ area.
He is married and living the dream.

Congratulations to Ashleigh and Paul Malangone on the birth of their son
Maverick August Malangone. Maverick was born June 17, 2013 at 11:07pm
weighing 8lbs, 21.25 inches.
Stefan Serie is currently a Health educator, football, wrestling, and track
coach in Merrick. He also owns and operates a fitness company in his
hometown of Long Beach. His company SeriousBeachFitness.com conducts
fitness classes on the beach and lead teams through various adventure races
around the tri-state area.
In Spring 2012 Daniel Bernardo launched his own
menswear company based in Chicago called Glass
House Shirtmakers. Dan majored in Fashion at LaSalle
University and makes his shirts with organic cotton and

Col. Jim Brennan and Adam Buckley share some
Friar stories during a recent visit. Buckley is the President
of Hugh Construction, a home renovation company,

Dan Librizzi and his wife Allison welcomed their new daughter Hayden Leni

Marylee Picciano Carroll and her husband Jeff are proud to announce the
birth of their son, Jack Buckley Carroll, on September 6, 2012 in Hoboken, NJ.
Jack loves singing with mommy, laughing, and taking stroller rides in his new
hometown of Chatham, NJ.
Michael Cyril Creighton won the Writer's Guild of
America Best Achievement in Writing(New Media
Award at the 65th Annual WGA Award Show held on
February 17th at B.B. King's in NYC. Creighton won for
the web series Jack in a Box which he writes and stars in.

Rob Scuderi signed a 4 year, $13.5 million dollar deal
with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Scuderi, who played with
the Penguins prior to playing for the LA Kings, will likely
be alongside Kris Letang on the team's top defensive
pairing. Good luck, Rob, and be nice to the Islanders!

2002
Chris Algieri is making quite the name for himself in the world of Professional
Boxing. Chris, a former Varsity Wrestling Captain and Assistant Coach after
graduation, began his career as a professional kick boxer. In 2007, Chris was
the ISKA World Welterweight Champion kick boxer. He continued his training
while attending Stony Brook University and received his Bachelor of Science in
Health Care Management in 2007. Chris was also working at the Cold Spring
Harbor Lab at the time. Since switching his focus to professional boxing,
Chris has had nothing but success. On February 22, 2013, Chris' bout against
Argentinian Jose Peralta\Alejo was televised on NBC Sports. The fight, which
took place at The Paramount Theater in Huntington, NY, was sold out with
1,100 spectators. Although Chris took some hard shots in the early rounds,
he dominated the last half of the fight and received a unanimous decision
victory. At present, Chris is the Undefeated Welterweight Champion with
a 17-0 record.
In February of this year Christine Caccipuoti became a founding member
of a weekly podcast series called Footnoting History. It consists of nine
academics possessing graduate degrees in history who rotate in podcasting
about interesting stories from history that are often overlooked. The idea
came from the notion that there are so many great tales out there that
were never told anywhere but in the footnotes of papers or presentations.
It's meant to appeal to the average audience, as the stories are told in a
non-academic fashion, and they are already up to almost 400 listeners in just
under four months. Topics have ranged from how the English got to Ireland
to pre-historic running. Their podcast on the history of papal abdication
was featured on OpenCulture.com when Pope Benedict XVI announced
his abdication. They can be found on at www.FootnotingHistory.com, on
Facebook(www.facebook.com/FootnotingHistory), and for free on iTunes
with a search for "Footnoting History."

2003
Joanna Charles recently graduated with her Masters in Public Administration
from American University in Washington DC. Currently she works for E.L
Haynes Public Charter School as an Administrator. She is the Site Manager
of Year Round Programs for the Early Childhood campus. E.L Haynes is the
only school in the district to run on a Year Round Calendar, and through the
program they are able to offer students 1,000 additional hours of enrichment.
Brittany Pagano Rose and her husband Michael Rose are pleased to
announce the birth of their daughter Avery who was born 6/11/13 weighing
in at 7lbs, 7oz, 20 inches long. Brittany is currently working as the assistant
principal for The Help Group's Autism School in California. Congratulations
to the Rose Family.
Congratulations to Emmett Ceglia who graduated Magna Cum Laude
from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Electronic Production and
Design. Keep your eyes (and ears) out for this very talented musician.
We are very proud of Jensen Daniel who has accepted a Peace Corps
invitation to serve as a Public Health Educator in Guinea, West Africa
from February 2014 to February 2016! Friars helping others!

Ryan Munnelly was named to the 2013 ECAC Lacrosse All Academic Team.
Ryan, a junior International Relations major at Hobart, made the team and
makes the Friars proud. In order to make this team these exceptional athletes
must maintain a 3.3 GPA or higher! Great job, Ryan!
Congratulations to Janece Guerra who was
named Saint Joseph's College Outstanding Student
Athlete. Janece is currently on the SJC Swim Team
and obviously doing very well academically!

2004
Emily Emma graduated from Molloy College Nursing School in
2008 and is now enrolled in a BSN to DNP program concentrating
in nursing leadership and management through The George Washington
University. Emily was recently accepted into the GNSA Leadership Council;
this is a national council designed for graduate degree nursing students.
2005
On Memorial Day 2013, the Town of Farmingdale
dedicated Prospect Street as Lance Corporal
James Argentine Way in honor of the ultimate
sacrifice James gave for our country. Saint
Anthony's will always remember James as a
true hero.
2008
Daniel Horn recently graduated from New York Institute of Technology with
a Bachelor of Architecture degree. His interest in architecture started as he
witnessed the construction of the Chapel and Student Center while at Saint
Anthony's. While at NY Tech Daniel co-founded a student-led and organized
committee called Operation Resilient Long Island (ORLI). This was a
collaborative response to Hurricane Sandy where new resilient building
typologies are pursued and researched for those in affected areas. You can

Friar Julia Macchio made her big screen debut in July's
Girl Most Likely. Julia has a small role as Nancy in the film
which stars Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening and Matt Dillon.

Tommy Schreiber, a junior at Princeton, has proven that not only is
he a humanitarian and scholar, but he is also an awesome lacrosse player.
Tommy was awarded the NCAA Lt. Donald McLaughlin Award as Outstanding
Midfielder. He was also named a finalist for the prestigious Tewaarton Award
that recognizes the most outstanding player in lacrosse.
2012
Congratulations to Christian Yeager who was named to the Scholar
All-American Team for Division I Swimming/Diving by the College Swimming
Coaches Association of America after his freshman year at Harvard. The
Scholar All America Award recognizes student-athletes with a GPA of 3.5
or higher. As a freshman, Christian swam the 4th fastest time in Harvard
history in the 200 Individual medley.
Congratulations to Olicia Williams who ran a 2:06 800 meter for Baylor
University. She will be representing the US (and the Friars) in the Pan Am
Games later this summer. Great job O!

Love for the Game
On Saturday, July 20th, the Friars Rugby team left Saint Anthony's on a long and very early bus ride to Princeton, NJ. The team knew they
had an arduous task ahead of them and focused on how they would pursue their goals on the field during the trip to the Princeton 7's Rugby
tournament. There were two Friars Rugby teams entered in the Princeton 7's tournament. The classmen team consisted of many players with
high potential for the sport, and the team of graduates showed great endurance and commitment, and has proven to play on the level of
their college bound peers. Throughout a long, hot, strenuous day, and with zero substitutes, the graduate rugby team was able to finish with
a victory over Greenwich Rugby of Connecticut, which was a win or go home for the championship. The victory over Greenwich awarded the
Friars with the Princeton Rugby NJ 7's High School Champions Bowl.
Senior Tiffany Rigole honored
by Ronald McDonald House
Current senior Tiffany Rigole was the top student fundraiser in an annual event that
raised money for local children fighting various illnesses. Tiffany raised $4,395 as part
of a team that raised $10,255 in the Ronald McDonald House Walk of Love 2013, a
5K walk at Eisenhower Park. She was a member of Kids Stock the House, a nonprofit
supporting families of children staying at the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde
Park. Tiffany was honored with a "certificate of love" from Ronald McDonald House
and a Putting Your Best Foot Forward Leadership Award from Kids Stock the House.
