Napolitano, Henderson Speak at May
Luncheon
Candidates for Montgomery County Sheriff, James Napolitano and Rand Henderson, will be the guest
speakers at the May 13, 2015 luncheon meeting at 11:30 am at Landry’s Seafood Restaurant.
Napolitano earned an engineering degree and later received peace officer certification. He worked for
three years as a Montgomery County Deputy before going to work as a Secret Service agent for 22
years where he served two terms with George H.W. Bush and then Bill Clinton. He started and
operated a corporate security company and is currently Chief of Police for the City of Montgomery.
Henderson holds a masters degree in criminal justice management and has worked for the
Montgomery County Sheriff’s office since 1994. He has held positions as manager of the patrol and
jail divisions, internal affairs, and as incident commander during three hurricanes. He also served as a
branch commander during the 2012 wild fires.

President’s Message
I hope everyone voted, or will vote, in the road bond election. Our
members are active on both sides of the issue as they should be
regarding something that affects our lives, property, and
pocketbooks. Voting and activism is what we are all about!
Those of us who went to Legislative Day in Austin on April 16th
were filled with that same kind of inspiration to activism. It was
great to see the Capitol area filled with women in red. We met
with Representative Mark Keogh and Senator Brandon Creighton.
We listened to great speeches at the luncheon and attended
workshops in the afternoon. The members who attended this event
were Pat Truesdale, Lori Jacobsen, Donna Gossett, Linda Fox, and
myself.
We had a good group at the April luncheon to hear Marlen Tejeda
speak about her work providing citizenship classes in Conroe for
legal residents who wish to become U.S. Citizens.
Hold on to your hats! We are already on the road to the 2016
elections. Come and hear from two candidates for the Sheriff’s
race at the May luncheon. This is just the start of our plans to
highlight the local races in the next year and a half. The county
party is already gearing up to get more people registered to vote
and out to vote. Watch for more use of social media to get the
word out about important issues.

Minutes for the Woodlands Republican Women’s General Meeting
Held Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at Landry’s Restaurant
The meeting was called to order at 11:30 a.m. by
President, Amy Van Horn who then introduced
the elected officials and other guests in
attendance.

Recording Secretary Joy Powell stated that the
March General Meeting Minutes were included
in the Newsletter and asked for any corrections
or changes. The minutes were approved.
Lunch
Pat Truesdale introduced guest speaker Marlen
Tejeda: Founder and Chair of Conroe Hispanic
Task Force, Vice Chair of the Greater Conroe
Latino Chamber of Commerce, and Board
Member of the Oscar Johnson Center. Tejeda
organizes and teaches U.S. Citizenship Classes
in Conroe for legal residents.
Business Meeting
Margie Dixon, gave the treasurer’s report of
$4,949.19 balance in account.
Amy announced the lunch cost increase to $22 is
effective the May meeting. There will be an
additional $1.00 charge if using the phone app
for credit card charge. She stated that perhaps
TWRW will have a new meeting location next
year.
Ms. Tejeda brought several staff members with
her who talked about the value of the program
and shared interesting stories about their
experiences with students from different
countries and different ages. She said that the
statement “My fellow Americans” means so
much to legalized immigrants. She
acknowledged and thanked Dr. Wilkerson and
Gordy Bunch for their support and involvement
in the program. Marlen insists that the students
speak English in class, and many have said they
want to learn our National Anthem in English.
Many work several jobs while in the program.
The responsibilities of citizenship are
emphasized while also being proud of their own
heritage. Classrooms are now available in
Galveston. Marlen thanked her mentor,
Rosemary Roe. The voter registration assistance
packages are free although attendance remains
low.
TWRW General Meeting, April 8, 2015
Donna Wick (in place of Nelda Blair who was
previously scheduled) gave a rebuttal response
for expanding the Woodlands Parkway. People
take their concerns to their county officials to her
firm. She sees bond as a solution for improved
mobility as the area experiences growth and
changes. She argued that the comparison to FM
1960 was not valid because of the many

There being no further new business, Amy Van
Horn adjourned the meeting.
Pat Truesdale stated that scheduled May guest

security work experiences for the Bush family in
his comments along with local security issues.
Both candidates for sheriff: James Napolitano
and Rand Henderson, will be present at the
TWRW May meeting.
Shelley Rollins suggested visiting Facebook for
information on nine-month program for
Leadership in Montgomery County.
She also relayed that Rosemary Roe of SD4 needs
election workers. Workers are paid $8/hour.
The Woodlands is The Legislative Day Gift

Legislative Day
Legislative Day was an event presented by the Texas Federation of
Republican Women taking place on Thursday, April 15 2015. It
sounded like a good opportunity to meet new people, educate
ourselves on current events and issues and have a whole lot of fun.
Pat Truesdale and I made arrangements to carpool to the Legislative
Day event and set out for Austin on Wednesday. We walked around
Austin and shopped and had dinner on 6th Street. We headed back to
our hotel to rest and get ready for the following day’s events.
We arrived at the AT&T Conference Center bright and early to register
and view the beautiful baskets that had been donated by various
clubs. We then boarded the buses to the capitol, where we were
privileged to sit in the Senate Gallery during Senate resolutions.
We then returned to the conference center for a delicious luncheon and met up with Amy Van
Horn, Donna Gossett and Linda Fox. Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan
Patrick, author Katie Kieffer, and TFRW president Jody Rushton were among the featured
guest speakers.
The afternoon workshop that we attended was titled Women Overcoming Obstacles to
Running for Elected Office. The panel of three women enlightened us on obstacles such as
family issues and gender bias that are obstacles to women seeking office more so than their
male counterparts.
A great time was had by all and I will be looking forward to the 2016
event.

An easy way to stay connected to The Woodlands Republican Women’s Club and to keep up with
current events is to “Like” our Facebook page. Facebook has become a useful tool in sharing
information quickly and easily to a large group of people. The Woodlands Republican Women’s Club
Facebook page shares a variety of information including local and county government issues,
statewide issues, current events across the United States and other interesting, pertinent information
for our club. You can find our club link by searching Facebook. Enter the phrase “Woodlands

Can One Vote Really Matter?
My 8 year old grandson asked me recently why I always voted and why I was so serious about it. I
went online to find some good examples of how one vote can really matter, but I found a lot of “urban
legend” falsities on the subject. Multiple sources claimed that everything from Hitler gaining control
of the Nazi Party to Texas being brought into the union had been decided by one vote, none of which
was true. So the ex-library employee in me kicked in and I decided to do some research on the
subject and share it with you. I hope you find it interesting!
• In 1876, Democrat Samuel Tilden won the popular vote in the presidential election and was ahead
in electoral votes. His opponent, Republican, Rutherford B. Hayes, was awarded 20 contested
electoral votes, which gave him the victory…..by one vote. This also resulted in the Compromise of
1877.
• In 1868 Andrew Johnson was charged with violating the Tenure of Office act and was impeached
by the House. The Senate then had to vote on whether or not to remove Johnson from office.
President Andrew Johnson retained his presidency…..by one vote.
• German Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer was the first chancellor of post-war Germany. He needed an
absolute majority to claim victory. He won 202 out of 402 seats, winning by…..one vote.
Interestingly enough, he cast the 202nd vote himself.
• Tennessee State legislator, Republican, Henry Burn cast the final vote to tip the scales in ratifying
the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote. The amendment passed by…..one vote.
Henry Burn was reportedly against the amendment but voted for it anyway because his mother told
him to.
There may be more cases of important historical events being influenced by one vote…..these are just
a few I came up with on the spot.
