Annual Report - Fiscal Year 2014
The Nicholson Family, Photo by Patrick Lee Annual Report - Fiscal Year 2014 7/1/13 - 6/30/14 With your Support, MARE helped to find permanent, loving homes for 164 Massachusetts children. That’s an average of more than three children placed every week! 60% of children placed were between 5-18 years old. 65% were children of color. Photo: Nicole Chan Photography And when every day counts, the average time a child waited for a family after being registered with MARE decreased significantly, from 1.41 years in FY13 to 1.17 years in FY14. How did MARE services connect these children & families? MARE helped to place children into adoptive families through a combination of programs and services. Below are the numbers of children placed thanks to each service. Placement Sources Foster Family 52 / 31% Adoption Parties 33 / 20% Agency Referral 32 / 19% Online Matching 16 / 10% MARE Matching Program 16 / 10% MARE Web (Online Photolisting) 3 / 2% Wendy’s Wonderful Kids 3 / 2% Wednesday’s Child 3 / 2% Multiple sources that contributed to a child’s placement included. Total exceeds 100%. MARE • 617-54-ADOPT • www.MAREinc.org From the Executive Director Lisa Funaro at National Adoption Day ceremonies It is difficult to talk about this past year without feeling that collective sadness surrounding the Oliver case. It shaped the year for many of us who work every day with talented and committed DCF staff. We saw the numbers of children registered here at MARE increase by 28%, saw many DCF staff changes and experienced some ourselves as well. The media was relentless in asking for answers, and officials were looking for solutions. Through it all, the adoption community has supported each other and remained focused on the hard work that we do each day – working on behalf of children who need permanency NOW! The Human Rights Campaign recognized MARE in FY14 for our leadership in serving LGBT families and youth at an event at the State House. We hosted nine adoption parties and four information meetings that were attended by over 400 children and 430 waiting or interested families during the year. We saw the number of videos and Heart Gallery portraits of waiting children increase through the generosity of our volunteer photographers and videographers. And we added a 5K Run to our annual Walk for Adoption that raised $70,000 and brought over 500 people all connected to adoption in one place at one time! We were also successful in adding a Director of Family Support Services to our staff, as the need for support to families interested in moving forward in their journey has only increased. What does this next year hold for MARE and the children and families we serve? We have several new and exciting projects in the works that we’re hopeful will be launched this year, including a new website, new technology capabilities and new partnerships. We also hope to develop new recruitment efforts for our older youth and to broaden our reach for families willing to become lifelong connections for these kids. We want to continue to expand how we support families and to continue to ask our experienced families to work with us as recruiters and mentors. We need to keep the creative juices flowing and to strengthen our collective efforts to find families for all the waiting children. Lisa Funaro, Executive Director A Growing Need In FY14, MARE registered 381 children in need of families - a 28% increase over the previous year. MARE staff fielded 6,745 inquiries from the community - a 26% increase. Photo: Tricia Charise Total number of children served: 796. Thanks to the WWK program, three of these youth found their forever families in FY14. We have made best efforts to include cash donors of $50+ and in-kind donors of $100+ from 7/1/13 to 6/30/14 We apologize for any errors. Please let us know.
