The Library is pleased to be a drop-off location for the
Coupons for Hunger social initiative, started by Londoners
Colleen Lindemann and Tonia Richardson, who are raising
$1 million worth of groceries through redeemed coupons for
Canadians in need.
So far, your donations of 100,000 coupons to London Public
Library branches have meant that $35,000 in food and
merchandise has been purchased with coupons and given to
the Food Bank and other London charities.
Learn more about Coupons for Hunger on their website:
www.couponsforhunger.org or on Facebook.

CENTRAL REVITALIZATION PROJECT UPDATE
As this article goes to print we are hard at work finalizing the construction schedule of the first phase of the Central Library
Revitalization. Our goal is to keep as much of your Central Library available to you as possible through the upcoming renovation
work. You will find up-to-date information about which Central Library areas, services and programs may be affected
on our website, in person at Central Library or by calling 519-661-4600. Construction may be under way by May of this year
and will continue for approximately 12 months. We will have more detailed information in your June issue of ACCESS magazine.
Over the past few years, you have shared with us your vision for Central Library. We hope that you see your ideas and concepts realized
through the spaces, places and experiences in the Central Revitalization Project. Here are some of the improvements and changes we are
making to better meet your needs:
• A mix of collections, programs and technology for every age on every floor
• Technology that supports you in accomplishing many tasks
• Spaces that support creating and making with both low-tech and high-tech elements
• Repurposing of existing materials and infrastructure as much as possible
• Collaborative spaces
• More light and expanded views of the Rotary Reading Garden
• A Branch Library feel on the first floor
• Spaces that facilitate exciting new program formats
• Stronger relationship with Dundas Street and with Citi Plaza
•
Easier to use lending and welcome area
• A place to celebrate community art
• Added digital technology dimension to the London Room

The Results are In!
Customer Satisfaction Survey
Your Library measures its performance in many ways – attendance,
circulation of books and other lending materials, and key usage
statistics such as how many times the computers and wireless
are used, how many programs are delivered, how many times our
website/catalogue is visited. At the same time, your voice is the
most important tool we have to know if we are meeting your
needs and your feedback helps to ensure that our decisionmaking is community focused and community led.
In the fall of 2015 LPL conducted a customer satisfaction survey.
Why? We had done a satisfaction survey in 2012 and wanted to
know if we are still meeting your expectations. Are we doing a good
job? Are we treating you well? What do you like most? What could
we improve upon? Does LPL provide real value to you?
Good value for
taxpayers’ dollars
Realizing that everyone leads busy lives, we are very appreciative
that more than 2500 or you responded, either by completing a
paper survey when you were in your neighbourhood branch or doing
so online via the LPL website. Many of you even took the time to
provide comments about how the Library impacted you personally
or the community in general.
So, what did you tell us? 38.3% respondents told us that LPL
helps them with their leisure needs, 22.3% with education needs,
followed closely by meeting self-improvement and work-related
needs. What you appreciate most are books/reading, computer and
Internet use, the holds and delivery system, programs, the quiet
and relaxing environment, and welcoming, friendly staff. Where
you’d like us to do better is to provide even more books and DVDs,
hours of service, cleaning, quiet spaces for studying and reading,
and improvements to the website/catalogue.

As a result of this and other feedback your Library has made several improvements including:
• Installation of more electrical outlets in most of our locations
• Installation of scanners
• Introduction of DVD quick picks
• Digitization of more London Room material
• Extension of loan periods for most DVDs, including TV series
• Making coffee available for purchase in many locations
• Increasing the number of items that can be borrowed
• Introduction of more maker/creative activities
• Re-organizing branch layouts to create more quiet areas
• Improvements to the Library catalogue
• Introduction of Hoopla
• Interlibrary Loan online
• Provision of more computer training and help with devices
Some other requested changes cannot be made so readily due to
legislation or funding requirements, but do know your Library is
committed to continuous improvement and gives due consideration
to each suggestion we receive. We do listen to and value your
feedback and will continue to look for ways to delight you.
The Economic Impact
of London Public Library
Your Library has a positive impact on the lives of Londoners, but did you know that your Library also makes a significant
economic contribution to the City of London?
In November 2015 London Public Library completed a detailed analysis to determine a conservative estimate of the annual economic impact
of the Library.
With a measurable economic impact of more than $102 million and a return on investment of 452%,
the results of this economic study clearly show that London Public Library is an excellent
investment for its citizens and the City of London.
The full report is available on our website.

It All Starts With Words
Kate’s Story
Kate Wiggins is the Executive Director of Women’s
Community House, Canada’s largest high-security
shelter for abused women and their children. Kate is also
on the Board of The Ontario Association of Interval &
Transition Houses.
When I was a little girl, life was crazy.
Until I was an adult, I didn’t know exactly how crazy it really was.
In part, it was because we moved a lot. Every year, it was a new
community and a new school. We went from neighbourhood to
neighbourhood, city to city, province to province. I only attended
the same school for two years in a row twice, and one year I
attended three different schools.
In addition to the moves, life felt crazy because of the fighting.
There was so much fighting. Screaming, yelling, hitting. Of course
(although I didn’t know it then) this made learning difficult, but
also because the curriculum varied dramatically from province to
province. Sometimes I was ahead and sometimes I was behind.
In grade two, my teacher told me my reading was below the
expected reading level. I was so embarrassed and in that
moment, I felt so stupid that I decided I would get better. And
so I did. I can’t remember the early, early books I read but by
grade three, I had graduated to novels (or chapter books as they
are now called). So fairly quickly, I discovered THE LIBRARY.
After my son was born, I took him to the library. Together, we
discovered Little Critters and Roald Dahl, along with Robert
Munsch books, Franklin the Turtle and The Chronicles of
Narnia. He read them all – sometimes twice – because they
were all so amazing.
I loved it there – the smell of it, the order it presented, the ever
so kind librarians, and of course, the books. So many books.
It was in the library that I discovered The Borrowers and The
Borrowers Afield. These incredibly tiny people who had amazing
adventures. I made little paper cut outs of tiny borrowers sitting
on spools of thread for weeks. I read Black Beauty and dreamt
of having my own beautiful black stallion. I read The Water
Babies and wished I was one. I read all the Sadlers Wells books
and ached to be a ballerina. I even tried to write about what it
would be like to dance. I remember reading Little Women and
felt what it would be like to have sisters.
My son is an adult now with three little girls. And when they
visit, we sometimes go to the library. Before bed, books like
Fancy Nancy, Where the Wild Things Are, Geronimo Stilton
and Goosebumps are read. I have no doubt that when my little
granddaughters are all grown up, should they choose to have
children, they too, will go to the library.
I read books that were tragic and sad and they helped me to
understand that life could also be tragic and sad. It wasn’t
strange or weird to feel sad or lonely. It didn’t matter in what
community I lived - there was always a library. And for me,
libraries were a lifeline to creativity and imagination. When I
take time to reflect about those times, I realize now that stories
gave me hope.
Giving children hope and confidence starts with words.

I am thankful to have discovered libraries at such a young age.
No matter what your life experience, there is always a library
filled with amazing possibilities, an oasis when life is hard and
you need an escape or a weekend adventure.
