News & Views May 2015 Children Are Precious and Important “But Jesus said, “Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”” (Matthew 19:14 NASB) This passage occurs when people are bringing children to Jesus to be blessed by him and the disciples are trying to keep them back lest they bother Jesus. Notice how Jesus responds by encouraging the children to come rather than discouraging them. In Luke’s rendering of this situation, Luke includes another significant point. He tells us that Jesus stressed the importance of child-like faith: “truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” (Luke 18:17 ESV) Certainly these and other passages of Scripture convince us that Jesus cares about our children! I believe that this fact alone ought to cause us to do all that we can to see to it that our children get to know Jesus personally here at our church and in our homes. Parents have the first and primary responsibility of introducing their kids to Christ. But they don’t have to do it alone. Family, friends and the church should all be there right alongside the parents helping teach our children about who Jesus is and also about how much He loves them. One of the ways we can do this as a church is through Sunday School. Therefore, we’re going to try to keep Sunday School going through the summer months. We’ve been blessed to have two wonderful teachers lead our Sunday School for the last nine months and now it’s time to give them a well deserved break by granting them some time off. In order to do this we need some more volunteers who are willing to teach Sunday School during June, July and August. I believe a team of four volunteers would be ideal. The 3-12 year olds are divided into two groups usually, so a team of four could cover for each other so that each week there were at least two of the four present to teach. Sunday School runs from 9:00-10:00 each Sunday morning. We’d begin the summer session on June 7th and go through August 30th, taking off the 5th of July since that becomes such a busy holiday weekend. Lest you think that I’m asking you to do something that I’m not willing to do, let me assure you that I am committed by telling you my plans for the summer Sunday School session. I am going to offer a class for the teenagers. In fact, I’m excited about this, so if you are a teenager or have a teenager in your home, start planning now to be a part of my class! And parents, we’re not forgetting about you...Pastor Richie will be continuing to teach an Adult Sunday School Class that all of you parents are welcome (and encouraged) to join while your youngsters are attending their classes. What a great opportunity to grow up in Christ. See you in Sunday School! Mark your calendars for the Common Ground Family Bike Hike We will be continuing our Wednesday evening ADULT BIBLE STUDY through the summer, meeting at the church from 6:007:30 pm. Now that our AWANA and youth programs have ended for the season, this provides the opportunity for some of you who volunteer to teach, listen and lead these programs to actually come and be fed yourself rather than having to constantly be feeding our children and youth. We’re continuing to study the Gospel of Luke and absolutely enjoying the rigorous discussions that arise from our study of the text. There’s so much to learn and so little time to cover it all, we never run out of things to talk about. Come and join us. You will most certainly be blessed! Everybody is welcome. If you can’t commit to being here every week, don’t worry about it. Each lesson is self-contained so you can be a part of any and each lesson that you are able to attend.
