Fiscal Year 2013/2014
We dedicate 171 Cedar Arts Center’s 2013-2014 Annual Report to Robert Lee “Bob” Kinner, a founding member of 171 who was
passionate about supporting artists and art appreciators by building institutions and opportunities that brought the community
together. By providing musicians with a stage, artists with a gallery, and thinkers with forums for discussion, Bob opened doors for an
entire community, and those who enjoyed his company and venues felt truly at home with the arts. This year, we created an award to
honor Bob’s talent for, and foresight in, enriching the community. 171 thrives because of its committed artists who embody all of Bob’s
passion and spirit, and we invite all who interact with 171 to nominate 171’s teaching artists for this yearly award.
Your community arts center is alive and well! Throughout fiscal year 2013-2014, 171 filled its buildings with a varied array of
programs, exhibitions, and events; living our mission to “enrich our community through the arts.”
Our programs represented many disciplines taught at the Center. In addition to the ever-popular Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration
– Making Real the Dream, Patty Ozer Story Ballet – Aladdin, and Artful Raffle fundraiser, we hosted many more new and expanded
programs: Gareth Pearson & Max Conover fingerstyle guitar concert; Saturday Social Dances; Holiday Gathering & Coffee House;
Culinary Workshops; Annual Meeting – honoring long-time music instructor and accomplished saxophonist Duvid Smering; Annual
Dance Recitals at the Clemens Center; Pots and Plants Sale fundraiser; Hairspray the Broadway Musical – six sold out shows over two
weekends in August 2014; Summer Dance Showcase; Garden of Fire Festival; student music recitals; 171’s Youth Chorus; and Women’s
Chorale at 171.
171’s Houghton Gallery housed exhibitions by local and regional artists who work to make a living through the arts: Mariah Seminara
presented daring Sharpie marker and aluminum abstractions; Pat Jackson curated a comprehensive overview of the Business of Art
on behalf of The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes, with new work from those who attended programs tailored to the unique
business needs of artists; The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes presented Salvaged: Outsider Art in the Southern Tier, an
exhibit of works by five regional outsider artists; Robert “Bob” Ivers presented a retrospective spanning more than 50 years of his
figurative and landscape paintings; Artful Exhibition kicked-off 171’s first selection of an Artful Solo Exhibition Award. Judges for the
inaugural jury were Tom Oberg, Bruce Baxter, and Marc Hample who selected photographer Susan Larkin as the winner of a solo
exhibition in August 2015.
We view 171’s programming within the framework of the community. We maintain a strong sense of place – located on Cedar
Street in the heart of Corning’s charming south side. We are well aware of our rich history, the passion instilled by the individuals
who established the Center, and we work to ensure 171’s promising future. We are an integral part of the Corning and Finger Lakes
community, which has a wealth of creative, progressive individuals and strong arts identity. As a home for the arts in the Southern
Finger Lakes, we also wholeheartedly support the local art scene and ceramics community.
171 commits to being a sound community partner by building on strong relationships, and our success depends on our ability to bring
people and organizations together in support of arts and culture. Throughout the year we worked with a number of schools, cultural
and human service organizations on volunteer programs, service initiatives, and arts education outreach: Alternative School for
Math and Science; Addison School District; Campbell-Savona School District; Bradford School District; Pathways Kids Adventure Club;
Pathways Day Program; Corning-Painted Post School District; Elmira School District; The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes;
National Piano Guild; Valley Folk Music; Centre Stage Community Theatre; Corning Garden Club; Addison Youth Center; Corning Area
Youth Center; Corning Salvation Army.
171 Cedar Arts Center is fully self-supporting. Membership fees, tuition, art sales, grants, and sponsorship result in income that
supports 171’s many programs; we rely upon grants from foundations and donations from individuals who believe in our important
work. Despite a challenging economy, the Center continues to receive extraordinary support from its members and donors, volunteers
and patrons, artists and presenters, business partners and foundations, schools and towns, and our own staff and Board of Directors.
Come visit, tour the buildings, see an exhibition, take a class or workshop…join 171, we’d love to have you!
Thank you for supporting the arts.

2015 Bob Kinner Faculty Award
For Teaching Excellence
Robert Lee “Bob” Kinner, a founding member of 171 Cedar Arts Center, was passionate about supporting artists
and arts appreciators by building institutions and opportunities that brought art and community together. By
providing musicians with a stage, artists with a gallery, and thinkers with forums for discussion, Kinner opened
doors for an entire community, and those who enjoyed his company and his venues felt truly at home with the
arts. This award was created to honor Kinner’s talent for, and foresight in, enriching the community.
The recipients of 2015 Bob Kinner Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence deserve recognition for their
commitment to making students feel at home with the arts, and we honor them for their contributions to
students and commitment to teaching.
Dustin Boutwell
Mr. Boutwell attended the Art Students League in NYC on a Merit Scholarship. While there he studied
the human form, portraiture, and still life with renowned artists Ron Sherr, David Leffel, and Gregg
Kreutz. After returning to the Corning area, he was invited to paint with Thomas Buechner in his studio.
Dustin has exhibited and received awards across the US and his work is in many private collections.
“Dustin takes the approach of starting where the student is, which makes his teaching very accessible
to students of all ability levels. Dustin’s high level of willingness to individualize his instruction for each
student is very valuable. Dustin’s own demonstration paintings–which he has been willing to do on
request!–show students how we can improve our abilities. We can see clearly how to take the next step.”
“It is a real pleasure to attend his class, it is so relaxing after a full day of work and yet we learn a lot and realize quality painting.”
Jacqueline Knitter
New York State Certified Teacher, Mrs. Knitter has been teaching since 1974, and has a special love for
teaching French Language. Her extensive experience and training in language education, along with
her personal travels, have led to the development of her signature teaching style incorporating the
enthusiastic use of props, toys, videos and even cooking to impart knowledge of French language and
culture to young students through play. Jackie has been teaching French for children at 171 Cedar Arts
Center since 2010.
“The girls look forward to Mondays, when they get the opportunity to play games, do crafts, bake,
sing, and have ‘gouter,’ or snack, with Madame. In the process, they have, in the space of a few short
months, learned an incredible amount of French. For them, La Petite Ecole is just about having fun, but as a parent I am
happy in the knowledge that they are learning in a creative, fun, and loving environment”
“Her love of French language and culture is infectious. It is difficult to tear the girls away from their class when I come to pick
them up at six.”
Claire Gonta Smock
Mrs. Smock is a magna cum laude graduate of Ithaca College, Ithaca, NY, with a dual degree in Piano
Performance and Music Education. She completed her degree at the Ithaca College London Center
where she studied with pianist Martino Tirimo. Her Masters in Education was completed at the Harvard
University Graduate School of Education in Teaching, Curriculum and Learning Environments. In 1996
she became a faculty member of the International Suzuki Institute in Kingston, Ontario, Canada,
teaching Music for Your Baby, Music and Movement, as well as private piano. Mrs. Smock is a teacher in
the Corning-Painted Post School District, and a 171 faculty member since 1980.
“Lessons with Claire represented a major turning point in my musical life: she was the teacher who was
able to awaken in me the sense that I had the ability to express something real and profound through music.”
“My daughter and Claire have a connection like no other. As I sit in on the lessons to take notes, I cannot believe how magical she
is to motivate kids to learn new challenging concepts with ease.”
