The island-continent is as exotic as it is familiar,
as cosmopolitan as it is remote. Take a multiday walk along the spectacular coast, staying
at a different bed and breakfast each night.
Taste exquisite vintages during a tour of the
country’s best wineries. Snorkel and relax at
world-class beach retreats. Discover Aboriginal
art and traditions, glimpsing the incredible
resourcefulness of the continent’s original
inhabitants. Encounter splendid wildlife—
geographic isolation over millions of years
has resulted in thousands of species unique
to Australia. Enjoy diverse cuisines, modern
architecture and extraordinary service in the
midst of vast wilderness expanses.

We suggest
Dwell in the spiritual heart of Australia with a homestay in
the Red Center. By special arrangement, visit the Aboriginal
Kuku Djungan tribe, traditional owners of the area. Learn
about “songlines” (sacred songs that call out the plants, rocks
and animals that form a labyrinth of paths, invisible to the

uninitiated). Discover the “Dreamtime”, the central theme of
the Aboriginal cosmos, and try to wrap your head around the
everywhen. This is not an organized tour, but an intimate visit
made in the spirit of appreciation.

food & Lodging
savor
Australia’s food scene is on fire,
with local and imported chefs
pushing the envelope. Indigenous
influences add unconventional flair,
with autochthonous “bush tucker”
ingredients breaking new culinary
ground, as chefs fold Aboriginal
influences into time-tested continental
classics. A strong Asian presence is
evident in many urban areas. But it just
might be those ubiquitous, mouthwatering mini pies—try the crocodile—
that you will crave long after you have
returned home.

Few destinations throughout history have
generated the stir of anticipation among
travelers that Bhutan created when it tentatively
cracked its door ajar three decades ago. The
privileged few who have ventured in have been
startled to behold a Himalayan kingdom almost
completely isolated from modern and western
influences. It has consciously cultivated both
a fiercely guarded traditional culture and the
world’s most well-tended natural environment.
But the winds of change are stirring. We
invite you to seize the day, to experience
Bhutan at this historic juncture, and to
travel with us to a land on the brink
of transformation.

gross national happiness
Bhutan’s unique approach to governance advocates a new
paradigm for measuring the wealth of nations in terms that
go beyond consumable goods (as measured in Gross National
Product). This concept is distilled into what the country’s fourth
king termed “Gross National Happiness,” which champions
22 www.AsiaTranspacific.com
individual and environmental wellness over materialism. None
other than The Economist magazine gave a nod to the remote
Himalayan land as being on the forefront of a new way of
thinking. Perhaps a journey to Bhutan signifies not so much a
peek into the past, as a glimpse of the future.

food & Lodging
savor
Being an isolated Himalayan kingdom
does not favor a rich culinary tradition,
yet Bhutan has its delights. Ema datshi
is the national dish made from chilies
and cheese—an Asian chili con queso
if you will. Momos (steamed or fried
dumplings) are another delicious
specialty. International cuisine is found
at upscale hotels.

Lodging in Bhutan tends to be simply
charming or simply, well, simple. A few
recently built properties offer stunning
style and amenities, but in general
expect local understatement. If luxuries
are lacking, it is a comfort to realize
that the week before, the premier
religious or governmental leader of
the country may have stayed in the
same room— there is egalitarianism to
Bhutan’s simplicity.

Borneo. The name rings with
end-of-the-earth appeal, occupying
an almost mythological place in the
traveler’s lexicon, as though it were
a jungle-covered Atlantis.
Yet its wonders are very real,
including stretches of rainforest
teeming with wildlife such as Asia’s
only great ape, the orangutan.
Also present are the pygmy Asian
elephant, clouded leopard and
Malaysian tiger. All of Borneo’s
wonders are made supremely
accessible by a well-developed

and comfortable ecolodges.
Ecotourism dollars will help

Atop any traveler’s wish list are the Khmer ruins at Angkor. The principal
ruins are concentrated in an area the size of Manhattan, but modern satellite
photography has revealed it to be only part of the largest pre-industrial
city in the world, one that extended across Southeast Asia. The temples
represent one of humankind’s most astonishing and enduring architectural
achievements, and they may be placed in significance alongside Machu
Picchu in Peru or the pyramids of Egypt as a testament to the greatness of a
continent’s lost empire.
The entire country is open to travelers for the first time in decades. Explore

In Cambodia, accommodations run a delightful gamut. In
newly opened regions, you will live like (and sometimes with)
the locals in comfortable, traditional guesthouses. In other
areas, gorgeous, restored colonial villas dot the countryside,

CHINA
China is coming of age before our very
eyes. Reveling in its ascendancy, it has
polished up its stunning repository
of imperial relics and is flaunting the
modern architecture of its metropolises.
Its historic influence can hardly be
overstated—its architecture, technology,
cuisine, art and philosophies are so
deeply embedded in other Asian
cultures that they are, ironically, scarcely
recognizable as Chinese at all.
The country is currently re-inventing itself
into an evolving hodgepodge of hardline
communism, rehabilitated Confucianism,
and run amok free-market capitalism. The
sense of dynamic change is palpable—
come explore China during this seismic
cultural uplift.

India
In India, an array of cultures and religions
has coexisted for ages, each expressing
its traditions in magnificent artistic
and architectural achievements. New
archaeological evidence now places it
alongside Babylonia as one of the first centers
of modern civilization. It is the birthplace of
Hinduism and Buddhism, and its tradition
of achievement in physics, mathematics,
astronomy, philosophy and poetry testifies to
India’s role as a fertile intellectual epicenter
for more than 4,000 years.
To discover India is to expand one’s notion
of the possible configurations of human
society. Suspend for a while your long-held
convictions, and open your mind to the
contrasts, the contradictions, the vastness, the
greatness that is India.

yes or no?
In India, a recognizable cultural trait is the head wobble
from side to side. Akin to the Western nod for “No,” but with
a whimsical sideways tilt, 90% of the time it means, “Yes,”
“Welcome,” or “Certainly, get in the taxi.” The perplexing
other 10% of the time it may mean, “Heck no,” “You’ve got
to be kidding,” or “What I just heard is so absurd, I cannot
properly acknowledge it.” Warning: After three weeks in

On the island of Bali, it seems that every
other person you meet is named Wayan.
Upon closer inspection it turns out that, well,
every other person is named Wayan, the name
given to all first-born children, male or female.
Madé is given to the second born, Nyoman to the
third and Ketut to the fourth. A fifth child will be
called, guess what—Wayan.

thailand
A magical and gentle land, Thailand offers rich
diversity—traditional Buddhist culture, exotic
hill tribes, lively arts, exciting nightlife, upscale
shopping, deserted islands, lush rainforests
and one of the world’s greatest cuisines. Enjoy
trekking, sea canoeing, sailing, river cruising and
snorkeling. Learn to ride an elephant, then bathe
and feed her at a sanctuary. The country’s ruins of
ancient civilizations are among Asia’s greatest.
But it is the gentle allure of the people that
really sets Thailand apart. Known as the “Land
of Smiles” this is Asia at its most accessible and
most welcoming.

Tibet
Perhaps it is Tibet’s roof-of-the-world elevation,
or its creation myth that had it connected to
heaven by a rope. Tibet seems to be somehow
suspended between heaven and Earth,
studded with places of worship and mountains
that scrape the sky. Despite an intense
“modernization” campaign by the Chinese
government, Tibetans retain a transcendent
spiritual quality that informs every aspect of
their lives, and which makes their home on the
world’s highest plateau one of the Earth’s most
intriguing destinations.

turkey
They say geography is history—Turkey houses a
repository of unsurpassed cultural wealth gleaned
from 5,000 years at the crossroads of civilization.
Indeed, this transcontinental country at Asia’s
edge is perhaps the world’s greatest epicenter of
exchange. Straddling Europe and Asia, it is strewn
with classical Greco-Roman ruins (more than exist
in either Greece or Italy), and hosts magnificent,
turquoise-tiled mosques that tell a story of origin
in Central Asia. Echoes of Homer endure in ancient
Troy, while fortified desert caravansaries still mark
the ancient Silk Road from China. Turkey holds
many passports, and opens many doors.

birth of modern thought
The southwest coast of present-day Turkey was a province
of Greece in ancient times, where the Ionian School of Greek
philosophy flourished in the sixth century B.C. This intellectual
epicenter of the pre-Socratic era greatly influenced Western
science and thought. Philosophers of the Ionian School rejected
90 www.AsiaTranspacific.com
the prevailing reliance on superstition and myth as a means
to explain phenomenon, instead promoting a naturalistic view
of the universe and the scientific method of inquiry. These
giants of Western thought—Thales, Anaximander, Heraclitus,
Anaxagoras and Diogenes—changed history.

With one foot firmly planted in the ideology

contradictions. Diverse religious traditions,
an elusive spirituality and ongoing political

underground resistance
The Cu Chi Tunnels are a remarkable testimony to the resilience of
the Vietnamese people in the face of foreign attack. Over 120 miles of
underground tunnels housed everything from kitchens to the strategic
command centers of the Viet Cong military. Thousands of people spent
over a decade in terrible conditions fighting for their homeland, against
the French colonialists and later the American anti-Communists. This
excursion provides insightful lessons in how the tenacious, resourceful
Vietnamese won their last three wars against formidable powers with
vastly superior technology.

You are bound for Asia, anticipating the journey of a lifetime. Chances are you will be
routing through one of these great Asian cities. You have serendipitously been presented
with the perfect opportunity to explore a world-famous metropolis, and who knows
when you will be passing this way again. Turn that two-hour layover into a day or two of
exhilarating exploration—it is the perfect way to begin or end your travels in Asia.

singapore
This city-state is impeccably clean and well-run, with commerce and finance as its focus. Originally
an obscure fishing village, the British made it a major port during the colonial era, and it has
seen a stunning rise to prominence in the last few decades. The society is truly multi-cultural, a
place where Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims co-exist peacefully. There are four official languages
spoken: English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil. Indeed, nowhere else in all of Asia do so many people of
different backgrounds interact in complete harmony while maintaining their own distinct culture.

hong kong
Hong Kong crackles with life. Crowds jostle, neon blings, horns
honk, cargo moves, steam billows and aromas waft through
its tightly packed, yet surprisingly organized spaces. Winding
alleyways give way to open harbor views, which are encircled
by soaring peaks and glass high-rises. Its exotic, far-eastern
feel is tempered by a British-colonial legacy, which lends it a
user-friendly aspect and makes it the perfect gateway through
which to ease into Asia. In Hong Kong getting around is half the
fun—you can be nearly anywhere in 30 minutes. Don’t forget
to simply wander—peer into bustling canteens, see the live fish
on offer in open-air markets, try on the Prada in swank stores
and let Hong Kong’s lively energy soak in.
Land Cost averages $500 per person per day/dbl occupancy.
seoul, south korea
Seoul is changing by leaps and bounds. It has embraced the
future with verve, refashioning itself into one of Asia’s great
epicenters. The business-driven, no-nonsense high rises of
the late 20th century are giving way to imaginative and ecofriendly urban spaces, and a movement is afoot to preserve
the traditional hanok-style housing and courtyard architecture
that defined the Hermit Kingdom in centuries past. Explore
medieval palaces of the Josean Dynasty, shop for designer
labels at fashionable modern complexes, haggle for trinkets
at night markets, explore art museums and enjoy tempting
cuisine on every corner.
Land Cost averages $450 per person per day/dbl occupancy.
taipei, taiwan
While many Asian capitals accommodate and defer to an
increasingly influential mainland China, Taipei’s defining trait
is one of non-reliance. Taipei has undergone a renaissance
since the 1980s, transforming itself from Asia’s ugly duckling
into a modern, liveable and walkable city. Taipei is full of
parks, monuments and museums. For art connoisseurs, a trip
to Taipei is justified by virtue of its National Palace Museum
alone, in which nearly 700,000 of these treasures reside. Sip a
coffee or cold Taiwan Beer at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial
square while watching locals fly kites and practice tai chi or
hip-hop moves, and you will have touched the soul of this great
Asian capital.
Land Cost averages $350 per person per day/dbl occupancy.

The charitable arm of Asia Transpacific Journeys
“To succeed in bringing clean drinking water to over
one million children and families in need is an honor.”
We have a deep connection with the people of Asia. We established
the Asia Transpacific Foundation in 1998 to deepen this connection and return
the kindness and generosity that has touched our lives.
For the past decade, we have been dedicated to implementing sustainable
grassroots programs that will provide clean drinking water to those in the
most desperate need. Every 15 seconds, a child dies from diseases associated
with dirty water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene.
Our foundation funds the production of clay water filters, which are locally
produced, creating jobs at the production facility. The filters are distributed
and villagers are educated on their use and importance, helping to put an end
to this devastation. As a result, health rates soar, particularly among children.
Thanks to the generous donations of our travelers, volunteer labor of our staff
and donations from our business partners, the Asia Transpacific Foundation
can manage community projects with virtually no overhead. This ensures that
nearly 100% of donations go directly to our projects.
