2014 Year End Report
Year End Report 2014 RAW ART WORKS Year End Report At Raw Art Works (RAW) we dedicate ourselves to lifting the aspirations of the youth we serve and helping them to create lives that become their own best works of art. We strive to make every artist feel welcomed, connected, and committed to our vibrant community. RAW’s mission -- to ignite the desire to create and the confidence to succeed in underserved youth -- was fulfilled in 2014 thanks to our amazing artists, staff, families, Board, and our very generous supporters. Our themes of “ignite, create, and connect” resonated far beyond RAW’s studios and galleries as we celebrated community, with a special emphasis on the city of Lynn, RAW’s home of twenty-six years. Artists Served During FY14 RAW served 1,500 youth, with 482 children and teens participating in one or more of our weekly groups and programs at RAW Space. More than 1,000 youth benefitted through community outreach activities such as Van Go, our mobile art van that brings art-making into some of Lynn’s most distressed neighborhoods during the summer. The demographic profile of the youth served last year included: 66% Hispanic, Asian, African American or mixed race; 69% low income or extremely low income; 85% from Lynn; 48% male and 52% female. 35% spoke English as a second language. 39% were on an IEP or had a mental health diagnosis. We welcome everyone into the creative home that is RAW. In 2014, 96% of our artists reported in their evaluations, “I feel like I belong here.” Evaluation Data RAW’s indicators of success derive from the Boston Youth Arts Evaluation Project (BYAEP), which RAW led, in collaboration with four other Boston area arts organizations. BYAEP provides a common logic model and framework for youth outcomes. Evaluation indicators are: I CREATE: Builds Artistic, Problem Solving, and Expressive Skills. Youth develop skills in artistic engagement, problem-solving, critical-thinking and expression. I AM: Strengthens Identity. Youth develop confidence, knowledge of self, an informed cultural identity, and a positive view of their future. H Before coming here I was reluctant to think about what I could do. After being involved here, my family and RAW helped me. I learned how to enjoy what I have. RAW has helped my family’s imagination go WILD like mine. – Crystal, age 8 WE CONNECT: Develops Community. Youth develop meaningful relationships and civic engagement as they contribute to and are recognized by an inclusive community. RAW uses both quantitative and qualitative tools to measure these outcomes: a beginning and final self-evaluation; a program evaluation; a drawing evaluation; and alumni evaluation. Open response quotes from our youth are sometimes the most powerful feedback we get at the end of the year. We also track growth on nine 21st century skills that include critical thinking, problem solving, communications, collaboration, and adaptability. Sample results from 2014 evaluations include: I CREATE: builds SKILLS 92% state: “I am able to express who I am through the arts.” 89% report: “I am able to understand situations from other people’s points of view.” I AM: strengthens IDENTITY 93% claim:“I stand up for what I believe in even when it is unpopular.” 87% wrote: “I put strong effort into school.” WE CONNECT: develops COMMUNITY 96% state: “I feel like I belong.” (here at RAW) 81% wrote:“This year, I have done something valuable for/in my community.” 94% feel: “I am comfortable working on projects with people from different backgrounds or who are different from me.” “I am able to express who I am through the arts.” “I stand up for what I believe in, even when it is unpopular.” “I put a strong effort into school.” “I feel like I contribute positively to my community.” RAW ART WORKS 37 CENTRAL SQUARE, LYNN, MA 01901 What I have learned in this group are many things: keeping a positive attitude and fighting through the hard times, expressing yourself in a positive way and not being afraid of showing your feelings. - Daquari, Boyz Lync Program Evaluations OPPORTUNITIES 90%: 95%: 100%: 97%: “I have improved as an artist and feel proud of my contributions.” “This program has a good balance of structure and freedom.” “I feel the staff does a good job with this program.” “I would recommend this program to my friends.” A POSITIVE CULTURE 89%: “In this program, I am involved in decisions here and my opinions matter.” 86%: “This program has helped me build my confidence.” 86%: “Because of this program, I can better express my ideas and feelings.” 82%: “This program has helped me become a better listener.” CONNECTIONS 90%: “I have gained trusting relationships with my peers here.” 97%: “I have gained trusting relationships with the staff here.” 77%: “I believe what I create positively impacts others.” 9.5 was the Group Satisfaction Average out of 10 points (with 10 being the most outstanding). One evaluation score that RAW will focus on improving concerns our artists’ perceptions of the impact their art has on others. Just 77% agreed with the statement, “I believe what I create positively impacts others.” While this result has been improving (in FY2010 it was 66%), it is an area we feel may be associated with a young artist’s appreciation of the power of the arts to affect others and/or with a critical assessment of one’s own work. We did find that RAW artists whose work was more widely and publically viewed (for example, those in Good 2 Go and Real 2 Reel) had higher scores. I CREATE Exhibits Community was an area of key focus for RAW in 2014 as we celebrated the people and organizations of Lynn. At RAW’s “Ignite, Create, Connect” exhibit we welcomed over 400 artists, family members, and friends into our gallery as we presented our ambitious portrait project. During the year, RAW’s young artists and their group leaders engaged 40 community organizations in a huge face-to-face initiative in which every RAW artist, aged 7-19, created both a self-portrait and a portrait of one or more community members. The portrait creation process started with visiting local organizations that included the New American Center, the Lynn Item, Lynn Public Library, HAWK, Lynn schools, and Lynn City Hall, and securing permission for taking photographs of people who worked there. RAW ART WORKS 37 CENTRAL SQUARE, LYNN, MA 01901 www.rawartworks.org Ignite – Create – Connect “I can’t thank Launch enough. It’s amazing. Honestly, I was completely lost in the beginning of my senior year. I was like what’s FAFSA? What is common apps? I did not know how much work the college applications required. It’s crazy to think that I’m going to college. Launch is truly a blessing.” – Lin, Project Launch Following this community outreach and photography project, the artists returned to the studio and engaged in an hours-long process using oil-based ink, acetate and charcoal to transform the photographic images into full-sized portraits, complete with vividly painted backgrounds. A whopping 572 portraits of community members -- including the Mayor, superintendent, local business owners, school principals, and a police officer -- were strung end-to-end in RAW’s newest gallery space, creating a powerful visual record of those who work together to make Lynn a special place. The portraits from the “Ignite, Create, Connect” exhibit will be prominently displayed, as a community mural on the long wall below Central Square’s elevated train, beginning November 2014. R2R Film Screening at the Peabody Essex Museum In June, young filmmakers from RAW’s Real to Reel (R2R) Film School presented their films to a standing-room-only audience at the Peabody Essex Museum. Their short narrative and documentary films elicited tears, shrieks of laughter, and enthusiastic applause that acknowledged the courage and hard work invested in bringing these thirty-one films -- each as unique as its young filmmakers -- to life. H At RAW, I have learned to always work hard and never give up. Before coming here I wasn’t confident about my art projects. After being involved here I had a boost to my confidence in everything that I did. I felt proud when we did the portraits of people in our community at the art show. – Madison, age 10 Through their films, RAW’s young artists shared their most closely-held stories. The film “Jordan” poignantly addresses life with a severely autistic brother. In “Dear Mom” two young women express appreciation for their mothers currently battling cancer. The narrative film, “Remember,” deals with the loss of a sibling and explores how it is possible to move on from grief. There was a fantasy film about a lonely baker who creates, and falls in love with, a gingerbread woman, and a film made from the perspective of a gold fish! Other films dealt with gender identity, and with coping mechanisms such as finding your “happy place” and living in the present moment. Under the leadership of R2R Director and professional filmmaker Chris Gaines, a total of 55 middle and high school youth participated in R2R. Students were further mentored by filmmaking professionals with expertise in editing, sound design, special effects, and film production. The filmmakers also received a special Public Speaking workshop to prepare them for the Q & A session that followed the film screening at PEM. 100% of R2R seniors received their high school diploma. For nearly a decade, over 90% of R2R students have graduated from high school and been accepted to college. One R2R Advanced student reflected: “This program is like the oldest willow tree on the bank of the clearest river. A protective shelter that provides you with the elements necessary to build a boat for your future travels.“ View R2R films at rawartworks.org/gallery/videos! RAW ART WORKS 37 CENTRAL SQUARE, LYNN, MA 01901 “RAW is my lifeboat in this stormy ocean we call life.” - Corinn, RAW Chief BASH 2014 Nearly 400 supporters gathered at RAW’s annual BASH to purchase art in our auction and raise their hands to “Sponsor a Kid.” This year’s BASH fundraiser raised a record high $222,775 – $53,000 more than last year! Art works were created by RAW artists as well as by staff, Board members, donors, and friends. At BASH 2013, we announced the launch of our 25th Anniversary Campaign. Since that announcement, we have met so many new friends and supporters, and are getting close to completing the construction to fulfill our vision of creating a space where more kids and more community members have the opportunity to be a part of RAW. Central Square will see its first new retail shop in years, where we will be selling wares and art pieces created by RAW teens and alumni. We’ve put careful thought into the façade of the building, working closely with our architect to create a welcoming street presence that feels like a great fit within the community. Programs Elementary School Programs Why are owls thought to be wise? The RAW Energy group engaged in a study of owls, learning about the unique physical form and lore of these beautiful and fascinating birds. Artists, aged 6-10, created elaborate and colorful collaged owls using papers and paints. They explored the questions: What is wisdom? What personal wisdom do I have inside me? The artists then submitted important life questions into a question box, and engaged the collective wisdom of the group to answer them. A favorite Mariposa project was Telling My Story, which began with a visit to the Lynn Library—a first time tour for some of the artists. The girls, who are in grades three to five, examined all aspects of a book—the cover, the author’s biography and photo, and the story inside. Girls embellished blank pizza boxes with papers, paint, and photographs, each making a “book” that reflected her special interests. One girl wrote about her book, “My Violin is about how someone can learn to play the violin. I have been playing for three years. I have learned that even though it can be hard it can also be really fun. I think you should try it!” Middle School Programs In Find the Beauty, an Art 4 Girlz project, girls aged 10-14 reflected upon the question, What is beauty? They determined that beauty was so much more than what the media relentlessly tells us. Beauty for them could, instead, be simplicity, a peaceful moment, a parent’s unconditional love. The group talked about how artists seek beauty in unexpected places and how beauty can also be found in what might be considered ordinary or even ugly. Using chalk paint they created a sidewalk mural with their depictions of beauty. Additionally, inspired by watching an Andy Goldsworthy film, the Art 4 Girlz group spent time in nature using found materials to create works of transient art—a rock labyrinth on the beach, or safe spaces for an acorn, a small animal, or a group of friends. H I had to take two trains and a bus to get from Raw Art Works, school, and work but that didn’t stop me. I continue to strive to be the most determined person I can be. - Frank, age 18 RAW ART WORKS 37 CENTRAL SQUARE, LYNN, MA 01901 www.rawartworks.org I AM “Each check-in is successful because everyone listens to me when it’s my turn. It lets me get all my good feelings and bad feelings out. I had no confidence before RAW. Now I do.” - Aniya, age 9 Following gun violence targeting young women in Southern California, the 10-14 year-old boys in Boyz Lync devoted serious thought to understanding the words “entitlement” and “misogyny.” They discussed why these attitudes might contain the roots of violence against women. Each boy then developed a positive statement of purpose, in response to the prompt “all men can _________.” The boys were photographed holding their statements, documenting their contribution to ending domestic violence. High School Programs RAW Chiefs, our paid teen mentors and group co-leaders, explored the roots and branches of their lives through the project Roots. Drawing with charcoal, and adding paints and pastels, the Chiefs created strong and vivid trees, while reflecting upon the depth of their roots, the height of their branches, and the relationship between the two. Chiefs also supported many RAW and community events including The Big Thanks, Alumni Night, and BASH. They facilitated art projects for young children in Department of Children and Families foster care and for centenarians at Lynn’s Life Care Center. Three RAW Chiefs served as assistants in Lesley University’s “Arts in Community” all-day graduate course taught by RAW’s Executive Director. Two RAW Chiefs represented RAW at the National Summit on Creative Youth Development in Boston, and several Chiefs put in a very long MLK Day of Service painting all three floors of the Lynn Shelter. Project Launch In FY14, Project Launch served 57 juniors and seniors, one of our largest groups to date. We expanded our annual calendar of workshops offered to teens and their families, added field trips to colleges and universities, and recruited more one-on-one volunteer mentors to accommodate our Launch teens. Our workshops included a panel and college fair we called “The Inside Scoop on the College Admissions Process,” mock Interview sessions, multiple essay writing workshops and an essay review program. Street Law 101, all about responsibilities and rights, was presented by Harvard Law students. In addition, we offered a new group, “LAUNCH CORE,” with three days of field trips and workshops over the summer for students especially interested in art and film programs. We also hosted our largest ever Career Night for Project Launch youth, with 41 professionals and 65 teens in attendance. Our seniors were accepted to colleges that included Boston College, RISD, and Williams. Most received scholarships, and two students were awarded full four-year POSSE Scholarships to Bucknell University. RAW Alumna Masiel Encarnacion has taken the lead of Project Launch in our new school year. RAW ART WORKS 37 CENTRAL SQUARE, LYNN, MA 01901 “RAW is my lifeboat in this stormy ocean we call life.” - Corinn, RAW Chief WE CONNECT H I ignite creativity, Collaborations RAW’s valuable partnerships with colleges and universities build critical bridges that help our students in accessing higher education. Some of our most significant collaborations included: mLesley University in Boston has an agreement with oOur R2R Film School to award three college credits to teens in our advanced film groups. Last year, seven teens qualified and were awarded these credits. mMassachusetts College of Art fast tracks RAW alumni for admissions review, and advocates to the Admissions Office for the admittance of and scholarships for RAW alumni. mMontserrat College of Art provides special admissions review for staff- recommended RAW teens, as well as scholarships for qualified RAW alumni. We continued to build our partnership with Emerson College. New relationships were formed with UMass Lowell and Bunker Hill Community College, Boston College, Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology, Salem State University, Duke University, PrattMWP, The College of Art and Design at Lesley University, and Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts. I create art to express myself in way words cannot, and I connect with myself and those around me. Before coming to RAW, I would be embarrassed about criticism but now I understand it and use it to make myself better. - Celine, age 16 RAW’s community collaborations expand and enrich opportunities for youth at RAW. They include: mLynn’s public institutions – City Hall, Lynn Public Schools, Lynn Public Library – are staunch supporters of RAW, particularly our Good 2 Go community art project. mRAW is an active member of the Lynn Area Chamber of Commerce and has hosted a meeting of three local chambers. As a result, we are forming more connections with area businesses that we are cultivating to become friends of RAW and to offer our youth internships and jobs. mRAW partners with the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston for access to professional filmmakers who can advise and mentor our R2R film school teens. mClose collaboration with the Lynn Public Schools provides access to youth referrals, liaisons with counselors, teachers, and administrators regarding individual students, and promotion of the RAW programs. mProject Launch regularly partners with the TRIO Educational Talent Search program at the Educational Opportunity Center. RAW ART WORKS 37 CENTRAL SQUARE, LYNN, MA 01901 www.rawartworks.org mPeabody Essex Museum hosts public screenings of R2R films. RAW teens have also been recruited to work in paid internships at the museum. “I can’t thank Launch enough. It’s amazing. Honestly, I was completely lost in the beginning of my senior year. I was like what’s FAFSA? What is common apps? I did not know how much work the college applications required. It’s crazy to think that I’m going to college. Launch is truly a blessing.” – Lin, Project Launch Art Tag In Art Tag, eight different groups of Lynn Public School elementary and middle school students, about 100 children, come to RAW for a series of workshops in which they create collaborative pieces used to “tag” the next school. Many of the students in Art Tag are special needs students with learning differences or behavioral issues. Some are English language learners. Teachers who have brought their classes into RAW for Art Tag have praised the program, remarking that their students have increased their knowledge of art , enhanced their social skills, learned to express themselves through art, and gained skills in cooperation by working with a diverse group toward a common goal. H Before RAW I felt different and left out. After RAW I feel like I can be myself and I have a voice. – Mikayla, age 11 In the Art Tag project “Teaching Compassion,” students at Lynn Woods Elementary School reflected upon how to live compassionately and how to inspire others to be more compassionate. Then students collaboratively created a brightly-painted book shelf and made individual book jackets with titles dedicated to the subject of compassion. Art Tag students at Cobbett Elementary School created a colorful and inspirational cairn set against a background panel of mountains and sky with the theme “Reaching Respect.”. They discussed how to best show respect, what it feels like to receive it, and the importance of self-respect. Van Go Van Go, RAW’s mobile summer program that brings art-making to Lynn’s most distressed areas, served over 300 Lynn youth during July and August. So many children in Lynn lack access to quality, structured programming during the summer months! Families may be unable to afford camp or kids may be responsible for caring for their younger siblings while their parents work. Van Go brings high quality fun programming right into their neighborhoods to reach youth who do not have access to other services. RAW ART WORKS 37 CENTRAL SQUARE, LYNN, MA 01901 “RAW is my lifeboat in this stormy ocean we call life.” - Corinn, RAW Chief Campaign Update We are thrilled to report that as of early November 2014 we have raised $1,704,140 towards our campaign goal of $2 million! This has allowed work to progress at a dizzying pace, with “deconstruction” beginning in February, the expansion and renovation of our Real to Reel Filmschool taking place over the summer, and the finish work in our 4,400 square foot expansion area nearing completion. Among the projects in the final phase is completing the street front façade that will be installed by late November. This expansion will allow us to do so much, serving an additional 170 kids in the first two years alone! Project Launch has settled into its new space, including offices for staff, a lounge for kids, and a conference room for workshops and meetings. We are busy developing our new street front art studio and retail store, and the new expansion basement area is being outfitted as a print shop art studio, featuring TWO letter presses and two printing presses where our kids can explore the integration of words and art. With less than $300,000 in fundraising to go, we hope and plan to celebrate the completion of the campaign with a bang at our annual BASH fundraiser next May! 2014 was an extraordinary year in which our organization and artists achieved truly inspiring results! RAW continued to grow our footprint, programming and community impact, while remaining true to our mission and unwavering belief in the power of the arts to transform young lives. As RAW enters our twenty-seventh year, we continue to thrive by the grace and generosity of our community of funders, partners, families, friends, Board, staff, and young artists. For that sustaining support and love, we are so grateful! We invite you to visit RAW’s exciting new gallery and retail space and to meet some of the talented young artists who call RAW their creative home.
