September is the start of the season
for many cultural organizations, and
here at the Arts Club Theatre Company
we approach our 53rd season with a
sense of excitement: It is our 19th at
the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage;
our 37th at the Granville Island Stage;
our second at the Goldcorp Stage at
the BMO Theatre Centre; and our 31st
on tour. Our first 15 seasons were at
our original home at 1181 Seymour
Street, the intimate space in the
former Gospel Hall which closed in
1991. Since then, we’ve searched for a
space where we could do works that
would best suit such intimacy, and that
eventually led us to the new theatre
on West 1st, south of Olympic Village,
with the support of the City and other
funders and individual donors. For
the 53rd season we are presenting 15
different productions on our three
stages, including four premieres, three
productions on tour, and one special
Brent Carver concert. It’s going to be
an exciting year!
It is with great joy we can also say that
this new season has the largest base of
subscribers we’ve ever seen at the Arts
Club. Subscribers are the heart of our
company and we thank them for their
continued support. If you’re not yet a
subscriber and haven’t taken advantage
6 Baskerville
We’d also like to thank the large
number of subscribers who are, or
who have just become, donors to our
charitable theatre company. Not only
does your tax-deductible contribution
bring you exclusive benefits and
behind-the-scenes perks, it goes a
long way to support not only the
productions we do on stage and the
local artists we employ; but also our
community work, like the LEAP: Learn
Early About Playwrights program;
our youth training initiatives like the
Musical Theatre Intensive; and our
new year-round Creative Teen Theatre
arts education program. Donations
support our ongoing commissioning of
new plays, with the Arts Club bringing
over 100 new Canadian premieres to
life in our 52-year history. So thank
you donors—your support and loyalty
to the Arts Club and the role we
play in this community is very much
appreciated.
We also have many who are attending
one of our shows for the first time.
Welcome to the Arts Club and thank
you for coming. We hope to see you
at a production of ours again—at the
Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, the
Granville Island Stage, the Goldcorp
Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre, or on
tour throughout the province.
Our 53rd season is now launched—
enjoy!

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S CIRCLE
The Arts Club Theatre Company relies on your philanthropic support to ensure the strength and vitality of the company. As a non-profit
arts organization, the Arts Club could not exist without the generosity of our individual donors. Ticket sales cover only a portion of our
production costs, so we rely on community gifts to close the gap. Please consider joining us by becoming a member of the Artistic
Director’s Circle today. Contact Rachael Lipetz, Manager of Individual Giving, at 604.687.5315, ext. 261, for more information.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
“There is no horror without
imagination.”
These are the words of Sherlock
Holmes from A Study in Scarlet,
Conan Doyle’s first novel portraying
the famous detective. I’ve taken this
to heart in my approach to Baskerville,
by taking every opportunity to engage
your imaginations.
I remember watching a puppet show
a few years back and, at a certain
point, I forgot they were puppets
and got completely lost in the story.
There’s a strange thing that happens
when you expose the pretence of
theatre to this degree—it can actually
make the characters and story seem
more real. I think this happens
because the audience has to crank up
their imaginative engines and meet
the story halfway.
This type of imaginative workout can
make us more open to ideas that,
on the surface, are clearly not to be
believed: mythical stories about a
murderous hound on the moors of
Devonshire. If your mind is already
saying, “that puppet is real,” then
unbelievable things can also be real.
Ken Ludwig’s script is already
inherently theatrical, with three
of the actors playing 40 different
characters—and it’s a farcical romp,
no doubt—but the theatricality also
serves to make the horror of the
original story more possible because
our imaginations are ignited by it.
To that end, we’ve striven to bring
you some real moments of theatre
magic: some that will let you in on
the trick, and others that, hopefully,
will leave you wondering, “how did
they do that?” even for a moment.
And hopefully make you wonder, “is
the Hound of the Baskervilles more
than just a story?”
Enjoy!
—John Murphy

Maude (Nicola Cavendish) is on the

living in a trailer park in Bakersfield,

their worst, she stumbles across a
long-lost Jackson Pollock painting.

arrives to authenticate it, and these
polar opposites evaluate the colour
of each other’s character.
