International Master-Class for Classical Saxophone August 22nd - August 29th 2010 www. saxophon-meisterklasse.de www. paucker-konzerte.de Retrospective 2009 5th International Master-Class for Classical Saxophone Laubach / Germany August 23th - August 30th 2009 “In music the passions enjoy themselves.” (Friedrich Nietzsche) I. The Master-Class of 2009 Six years ago we, a group of friends of chamber music, had the idea of a Master-Class for Classical Saxophone. And now we see that this Master-Class apparently is needed; We never had so many applicants for active participation and unfortunately had to say “no” to many interested students. And we never had such a large audience. This motivates us to continue with the task of giving a special professional education to young musicians in an international atmosphere. And it motivates us to continue to propel the interest in music with the classical saxophone by offering something very special to our audience in the form of four classical saxophone concerts. II. The Faculty Three teachers, three artists, three approaches, three philosophies. A convincing team. “Never change a winning team”, a team of some of the worlds best players and teachers for the classical saxophone: Arno Bornkamp, Professor at the “Sweelinck Conservatorium van Amsterdam” Vincent David, Professor at the “CNR de Versailles “ and Jan Schulte-Bunert, tutor at the “Universität der Künste”, Berlin. Furthermore we had with us, Peter Weniger, Wolfgang Köhler, Professor for Jazz at the “Universität der Künste” (UdK), Berlin Professor for Jazz - Piano at the UdK, Berlin. They presented to the class a most stimulating introduction into improvisation for classical saxophone players. And they enthused the audience at a jazz-concert. Such a Master-Class stands and falls also with the piano accompanists. This year we were successful in having again Florian von Radowitz, Berlin and Stanislav Boianov, Detmold. III. The four Concerts of the Master-Class The four public concerts are part of the teaching and learning experience of the students. And they are part of our chamber-music series, demonstrating convincingly that the saxophone is a wonderful instrument for classical music. During the 2009 season, there were - besides the four classical saxophone concerts - concerts of piano solo, a quartet for clarinet, violin, cello and piano, a concert with viola d´amore flute, cello and cembalo and a concert for cello and piano. At the beginning of the saxophone concert series and of the Master-Class - there was the concert of the tutors in dialogue with the violin and the piano. What a great start for the students to experience their teachers in concert. And what a great chance for the audience to listen to some of the best classical saxophone players of the world. Then followed “Jazz and Classic” , a concert to enjoy the difference in technique, approach and philosophy of the Jazz- Saxophone music vis-a vis the Classical Saxophone music. The last two concerts were the concerts of the master-class students. At first selected students played pieces for saxophone solo, saxophone duo or saxophone and piano. Then, on the last day of the MasterClass, the students played chamber-music in the form of quartets and ensembles. Energetic and devine music, as if two organs were playing. And the gates of this Chapel were shut And „Thou shalt not,“ writ over the door; So I turned to the Garden of Love That so many sweet flowers bore. And I saw it was filled with graves, And tombstones where flowers should be; And priests in black gowns were walking their rounds, And binding with briars my joys and desires. C. Tasks and Objectives The tasks and objectives of the non profit organisation “Musik und Sprache Hessenbrückenmühle e.V.” are (a) to support gifted young artists by giving chamber-music concerts (presently six concerts) and thus creating income for them and (b) to enhance their professional levels, among others through Master-Classes, such as the “International Master-Class for Classical Saxophone”. Furthermore pupils from secondary schools and from music schools are invited to attend the concerts free of charge in order to induce interest and joy for “our” music in the younger generation. The chamber music concerts are given since six years. Their main features are: - High level of professionalism of young artists. - A balanced program between classical and contemporary pieces. - Introductory remarks for contemporary pieces. - One evening per season (May to September) is mainly dedicated to using the language to comment on music, musicians, composers and the music perception of audiences. IX. The place of the Master-Class The Hessenbrückenmühle in Laubach, a national historical monument, is an old restored water-mill originally from 1698 at the banks of the river Wetter some 60 km north-east of Frankfurt/Main. Four old buildings are assembled around a beautiful courtyard. The tutors are teaching in one large and two smaller concert-rooms. There are eight practice rooms available and many lovely corners in the park, next to the river or close to the forest. The central hospitality area is in the hall of the old stone-barn. Accommodation for the faculty is arranged at the water-mill. Students either live in a little county inn in walking distance of the mill or in the private homes of many Laubach citizens who welcome guests with great hospitality. X. The Organisation The Master-Class is organised by Ute and Dr. Holger von Paucker, a former banker in New York and London and now owner of the Hessenbrückenmühle. They founded the non profit organisation “Musik und Sprache Hessenbrückenmühle e.V.” together with friends of chamber music. XI. Thank you Such a master-class is the joint undertaking of many giving active support as well as backing the ideas behind the Master-Class. We are thankful for this support and backing, among others by our sponsors: Yamaha Sparkasse Laubach-Hungen, Laubach Allianz Generalagentur Hartmut Schmidt, Laubach Giessener Allgemeine, Giessen by our 35 supporters who helped with generous donations to finance this Master-Class, by our 75 members of the non-profit organisation who gave us financial and practical support as well as kept us on track of reaching our objectives, by our 85 season ticket holders, by the press, p articularily by the “Giessener Allgemeine” and the “Giessener Anzeiger” as well as HR 2, by the hospitality of many Laubach families, who opened their private homes to our students, by the paying audience from the Frankfurt/Giessen region, being interested in listening to the music of classical saxophone. XII. Auf Wiedersehen It has been our objective to give this years group of talented young masters further impulses, which should improve their chances of a successful professional career. The feedback received gave us the confidence that this objective has been achieved. We wish all participants a successful continuation of their career in the wonderful world of Classical Saxophone. And perhaps we will see you again at one of the next “Master-Classes for Classical Saxophone” at the Hessenbrückenmühle in Laubach/Germany. Auf Wiedersehen, so long, au revoir, hasta la vista, do widzenia Ute and Holger von Paucker
