New Global Citizens
New Global Citizen's mission is to mobilize young people in the United
States to help solve the world's biggest problems. Their programs
motivate members of Generation Y (born 1980-1995) to ask "Why
does half the world live in poverty? Why don't 1.2 billion people have
access to clean water? Why do 1,200 children die every hour from
preventable diseases?"
America's Generation Y is the wealthiest, most connected and most
diverse generation in our history. At nearly 71 million, they collectively control over $211 billion in spending annually. They represent
nearly every country, religion, and language on earth. Given all these
factors, young people are uniquely poised to tackle the world's
greatest problems.
Nicole Sanchez, Executive Director of New Global Citizens, will discuss
how you can get started and help in this effort !

”Bhangra is a dance that expresses all human endeavors with nature
and with each other” According to a folk tradition Bhangra comes from
the word “Bhaun-gar”, which means action on land. Farmers and peasants in the state of Punjab do the Bhangra in celebration of a good
harvest. The dance is done to give thanks to mother earth “Bhuan” and
to celebrate their own endeavor and effort, their hard work and toil.
The celebrations and dancing of Punjab can be traced back to the Mahabharata and even some hints of it’s exist in the Rig Veda. Today the
Bhangra is done everywhere from an Indian movie, to a cultural program to the clubs of San Francisco. This afternoon SThree Productions will give you a glimpse of Bhangra in a few of the above settings;
Patriotic, Popular and Traditional.

Xpressions, the dance school with a difference, was founded by Srividya Eashwar in an attempt to unfold India’s cultural traditions to the young generation
in the Bay Area, and to encourage them to learn, respect and admire the rich
culture of Indian performing arts. Srividya Eashwar, with a vivacious yet humble demeanor, has built a tradition of innovative ways of teaching her students.
Her dedication and creativity always stands out in dances choreographed by
her – simple, elegant, clean yet rhythmic and pulsating. Srividya uses her years
of experience in classical, folk and contemporary dances to create ingenious
combinations of these for her students. Her students not only learn the basic
steps and gestures of different types of dances but also the subtle and meaningful hand and facial expressions. The spirited performances of dancers and
the many accolades they have won is a testimony of the Xpressions tradition.
