Friday 11th December LEADERSHIP LETTER Dates for your diary Christmas Holidays Dear parents/carers, The Autumn Term is traditionally the longest of the school year. This term has seen our Year 10 students begin their GCSE journey and I have been delighted with their response to the academic challenges that they have faced. In the sixth form we have welcomed new students into Year 12 and have appointed Head Boy and Head Girl as our most significant student leaders. It is also always inspirational to watch the developing contributions from our Year 7 pupils as they become more familiar with the new surroundings of ‘big school’. The school, of course, continues to grow and our staffing expands to meet our needs; we therefore keenly anticipate the arrival of two new colleagues after Christmas. Mr Brush will take on the lead of the PE Faculty and Ms Moody will become the subject leader of History. We are also intent on letting parents know more about what is happening within the school and our Facebook page has proven popular and provided coverage of sporting fixtures, extra curricular visits and curriculum enrichment opportunities. The last day of term is Friday 18th December at 1:15pm School will resume on Tuesday 5th Jan 2016 You can contact the school office until the 22nd Dec and then again after the 4th Jan Finally, your child has been provided with a beautiful Faith Journal to allow them to reflect and capture any aspect of their Nishkam journey that facilitates their personal growth and development. The Christmas and New Year break will afford us all the opportunity to reflect on the past twelve months and look forward to the year ahead. I hope it will be a restful time and one in which you are able to enjoy quality family time together. School will close on Friday December 18 at 1.15pm; it re-opens for pupils on Tuesday January 5, 2016, at 8.30am. Following three days of rehearsals, students from across a number of schools in Birmingham took to the stage to sing, dance and act in a variety of set pieces focusing on the theme of The Golden Rule – treating others as you would like to be treated. Students were able to work with the professional Gen Verde international performing arts group and the results of the intensive coaching sessions were spectacular. The six students who impressed at the event were Gessica Randhawa, Jade Rai, Ujal Jheeta and Gurjhoot Bhangoo in Year 7 as well as Amarpreet Assi and Priya Purewal in Year 8. We hope to take part in the initiative again next year and would love to see a greater number of Nishkam High School students taking part in what was a truly enriching experience for those involved on this recent occasion. Boys sports roundup Nishkam's basketball teams finished off the year with strong performances across the board. Having not yet won a game so far this season, all came close to winning this week. An all-round improved performance by all the boys involved meant that, despite loses, the margins of loss were significantly smaller. Great statements of sportsmanship and fair play were evident this week from the Nishkam boys, across all teams, as decisions frequently did not go their way. The boys have developed well over the course of the year and their first win is surely not far away. Well done all! Results Year 7 Nishkam 10 - 18 Baverstock Year 8 Nishkam 26 - 32 Baverstock Year 10 Nishkam 16 - 19 Bishop Challenor Cultural Studies Projects Students have now finished their personal projects and are currently presenting their artefacts and research in cultural studies lessons. We have been impressed by the diverse range of topics explored from the construction of drill powered bikes to the composition of music using a limited number of chords. Just have a look at the pictures to see the different projects students have been engaged in. Teachers are now starting to judge who the form winners will be in years 7 to 9. In January, the overall winner will be selected by the leadership team. Exciting times! Debating Matters Four Year 12 students participated in the qualifying round of Debating Matters on Monday 7th December at Bishop Stopford High School in Kettering. Chess speaks for itself, it's going to be amazing! *Free maths help* After a passionate and informed debate on whether museum cultural artefacts should be repatriated, the Nishkam debating team narrowly lost out to the opposition. The three judges explained that they took so long to deliberate over who should win because all three were not in agreement. Though the team lost, it was, in the words of Bella Constable, an ‘enriching and educational experience’. The team look forward to taking part in more debating competitions in the future. Well done to Jas Hothi, Bella Constable, Harleen Sahota and Jesse Kaur. Join Mr Nandra for Chess club Tuesday Lunchtimes in S19! Starting in January!
