Box 174, Redcliffe Qld 4020 Newsletter of Peninsula Camera Club Selecting with Quick Mask By Jason Mayoff & Glenn Rossiter From PCC New Members Tutorials These principles apply to any reasonable quality image editor, although the exact instructions here apply to Photoshop only. An easy way to make a selection is using Quick Mask in Photoshop. With an image file open, enter Quick Mask mode by clicking the Quick Mask button near the bottom of your tools palette, or by hitting ‘q’ on your keyboard. It will appear that nothing has happened, but you will have in fact been magically transported into the rose-coloured world of the Quick Mask. Paint A Mask The simplest and easiest way to start working in this mode is to choose a brush, set foreground colour to black and start painting. As you paint, even though the foreground colour is set to black, everything you brush over will become reddish. Making A Selection Once you’ve painted over all the places you want “protected”, simply click the Quick Mask button again, or type ‘q’ on the keyboard. Everything except the painted area will be encircled by marching ants indicating it has been selected. To toggle between the “Masked Areas” and “Selected Areas”, Alt-click the Quick Mask Mode button. If this is what you want, then just move on from here, deleting or enhancing the selected area. Adjusting The Mask To make adjustments to your mask, go back into Quick Mask mode again (click Quick Mask button). To Remove some Mask – set foreground colour of the brush to WHITE and 'paint away' unwanted areas of the mask. To Make the Mask the Selection To enhance, delete or otherwise change the area you painted over, rather than have that area masked, exit Quick Mask mode (type 'q' or click Quick Mask Button) Select the inverse of what is currently selected by choosing Select -> Inverse in the menus or use the keyboard shortcut CTRL-Shift-I. To use an analogy, when you are painting a room, you use masking tape to cover all the bits you don’t want to get covered in your lovely shade of eggshell mocha. Well, that’s the same thing you’re doing here in Quick Mask. Everything you cover with reddish “masking tape” will be protected from whatever it is you’re going to do with the image. The idea is that Photoshop will “select” everything EXCEPT what you have painted in red. NB : Double-click the Quick Mask button to change this! Here are a few tips: Painting with black as your foreground colour applies the mask to an area. Painting with white erases mask from an area. You can use other tools (eg: gradient) to create a mask. Try changing the hardness of a brush when creating a mask. In Photoshop Elements use a “Selection Brush Tool” with its MODE set to “Mask” instead of “Selection” as a mask painter tool. ■ Further Reading: http://www.pccqld.org/New%20Members%20Tutorials-Rossiter.zip http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/adobe-photoshop-tips-selecting-with-quick-mask/ http://teacherlink.ed.usu.edu/tlresources/training2/USU-IT/Photoshop/How%20to%20Use%20Quick%20Mask%20Mode%20in%20Adobe %20Photoshop%20CS5.pdf http://tricky-photoshop.com/quick-mask-tool/ http://www.elated.com/articles/photoshop-quick-mask-mode/ http://www.geofflawrence.com/photoshop_quick_mask.html http://www.tutorialstraining.com/cstutorials/tut54quickmask.htm http://www.tipsquirrel.com/quick-mask-style-selections-in-photoshop-elements/ Welcome to our New Members and Visitors Please welcome new members and Visitors to the Peninsula Camera Club. Newsletter of Peninsula Camera Club Where to Go For Help Even after you've been with the Club for a while, you might be shy or tentative about asking for help. You may not even realise there's someone you can ask. Experienced members are the club's major resource. Seek out an A-grader with your camera or interests. They've been through what you've been through, so ask around. You can even ask for a Mentor, see a Committee Member if you need help. Experienced Members Competition Sections Discussion Paper Contributions, comments and suggestions should be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to The Secretary, P.O. Box 174, Redcliffe Qld 4020. This is a 6 month discussion process. If you'd like things to change or stay the same, please participate. All submissions will be published in Lenscope and discussed at the General Meeting on 22nd July 2016. The Management Committee have accepted Peter Lombard's proposal for Altered Reality/Creative this year, being AR/C will be for held each three months (as a trial) I.e. March, June and September. Entries must be in no later than the PDI judging night the month before eg February, May and August. As an idea of the depth of experience club members have, here's a sampling of just a few experienced members. Remember—this is only a start. Keep asking until you get the information you need. This discussion paper will conclude on June 30 2016. Member participation is strongly encouraged! To allow members to consider seriously the current PCC club competition sections and the future of those sections. Members are encouraged to put forward suggestions including any pros and cons for discussion at General Meetings. In the interim it is suggested that any and all suggestions and discussions be coordinated and published in the PCC monthly newsletter “Lenscope”. Proposals Suggestion 1.) The possibility for the roles of PDI and Prints to be reversed. i.e. Colour PDI, Monochrome PDI, ARC PDI with PRINTS becoming Open and/or Set Subject Prints x 2. [Anon] Pros; Time and cost savings as prints can become expensive and time consuming particularly to the novice. Quality and/or size of images need not be as high since PDI requires lower resolution. This may increase member participation. [RP/PL] Cons; PDI competition is well established and thus is quite large. [GR] Numbers would need to be split up for viewing on at least two nights per month. This would increase the chance of PRINTS falling out of the completion due to it’s lower numbers. [PL/GR] Brad King, Gerry Allen & Don Featherstone for Canon Digital Systems and Lenses. Suggestion 2.) Peter Simmonds for Apple computing, Adobe Lightroom and SONY Digital systems. AR/C Prints B Grade be increased to bi-monthly and AR/C Prints A Grade be returned to Monthly. [PL/LH] Website Resources The club website www.pccqld.org abounds with help, like Cambridge In Color tutorials (occasionally summarised here in Lenscope) and many others. PCC-LINKS page has many useful links including online magazines and tutorial sites, especially under the sections General Photography and Education and Digital Photography and Camera Reviews (including Cambridge In Color). DOWNLOADS page has Glenn Rossiter's Set of 7 Useful Photoshop and Image preparation Tutorial sheets—vital for digital work, Peter Lombard's Altered Reality Demonstration and files to try, John Quixley's Focus Stacking Technique presentation, How Big Can I Print My Photo?, computer tips and much more. Lenscope — April 2016 Pros; Easier to increase competition. Greater opportunity for awards and grading advancement. [LH/PL] Cons; Too many Prints, cost and time. Not enough member participation. Harder to increase member participation. [PL] Legend: RP Robyn Paul PL Peter Lombard LH Louisa Hancock GR Glenn Rossiter —4— Newsletter of Peninsula Camera Club Smoke &/or Steam Optimise for the darkest possible background and have a strong light through the smoke or steam. By Grant Gillespie According to photographyonline tutorials.com, steam is a vapour of water, while smoke consists of solid particles like ash or other fire by-products. Steam is light in color, translucent and reflective and will hardly ever show up on a light-coloured background. Manual exposure is essential, to capture smoke and steam. The light colour will trick auto exposure into underexposing, potentially losing vapour like… steam, altogether. Steam is always in motion so the appearance of the steam in the image is best controlled by shutter speed. Similar rules apply to steam as to other subjects in motion (water, fire, clouds). Speeds of 1/30 or below will produce a soft dreamy effect while speeds or 1/60 and above will freeze the motion to reveal more details. Manually focus on the source of the To use shutter speed to control the appearance of the smoke continuous light is best. When flash is used the motion of the steam will always appear frozen. Try different shutter speeds and see what effect you like most in each situation. Open up the aperture (5.6 or 7.1) for shallow Tips Incense sticks are a simple, long burning source of smoke. smoke/steam. Smoke and steam move so quickly, auto-focus will be confused. f/125 or f/250 should freeze motion, but experiment with speeds down to 1/60th or 1/30th, to see the results. depth of field, to blur the background and let in as much light as possible, to capture such an ephemeral subject. Experiment with smaller apertures (higher f numbers) if more depth of field or detail is required. Low ISO (100) and a strong light shining through the smoke or steam will reduce noise. Slow shutter speeds capture a quantity of smoke or steam, but may lose definition. It’s important to get light through something as fine as steam and use higher shutter speeds to freeze the details. For indoor shooting, a dark background is recommended, with a flash or light shining through the vapour and a reflector on the other side at 45º, so no light hits the backdrop. Tricks to increase smoke in an image include smoke pellets, steam machines, incense or even cigarette smoke blown into frame. Post processing begins with getting the background as dark as possible, then adjusting for the smoke. To create coloured smoke, experiment with channels, colour balance or hue/saturation. Setup at lightstalking.com Dragon by Peter Emmett Food Andrew Scrivani recommends hot, liquid foods, at a low angle on the subject with a contrasting background to capture wispy plumes wafting off the cup or bowl. Shoot at table level with a dark card or a room falling to black. In winter, shoot near a window and open the window to allow the cold air to hit the hot soup just as you take the shot. Smoke is best achieved with a grill in the burning embers stage. The grill is extremely hot and when something marinated and moist hits it, it is going to sear and smoke immediately. Enjoy chasing the wisp and/or billows of smoke and/or steam. ◆ Further Reading Matthew Malkiewicz at dpreview.com Steam Trains Popular subjects for smoke and steam are steam trains. Paul Pavlinovich recommends cold damp weather so the steam and smoke hang in the air where it is ejected. Steam engines are at their most impressive when they’re working hard as they eject the smoke and cinders high into the air. Try to find places where the locomotive is climbing a hill or on something interesting like a wooden trestle bridge. Clouds of steam easily trick auto-exposure into underexposing. Expose for the conditions before the smoke or steam appears, and compensate -1, to avoid over exposure.
