On the 16th of September 1986 our owners and management team purchased The Moore Arms. As
you can see from the cover photo, we have endured many changes, extensions and alterations
during the past 30 years! The establishment was named The Moore Arms in relation to Sir John
Moore who was one of Appleby Magna's most famous sons. Lord Mayor of London in 1681 to 1682,
he gained a knighthood. His residence in Appleby Magna saw him fund the building of a school,
which still operates today as the Sir John Moore Foundation, the initial drawings for which were
undertaken by Sir Christopher Wren, who designed St Paul’s Cathedral in the capital. We eventually
had to change our name due to confusion with a similarly named licenced premises in the village of
Norton Juxta Twycross, called The Moores Arms, Norton being Sir John Moore's place of birth. Local
residents may recall distinguishing the two establishments as the "little Moores" and the "big Moores"!
With our plans for conversion to a hotel, "The Appleby Inn" was decided upon as the name for a
geographic link for anyone visiting from afar. During our time here we have always been keen to
remember our history and local community, with the naming of our function rooms and menus,
amongst many other things, as you will read below.
Hotel Accommodation
Our hotel was added to the original building in 1990, we built 20 en-suite bedrooms with the owners
designing and managing the project themselves!
Many refurbishments later, we now boast large screen Freeview televisions, tea and coffee facilities,
limited room service, and Wi-Fi free of charge, accommodation at the Appleby Inn offers all the
necessary amenities for your stay.
Breakfast has always been included in our room rates and is served at your restaurant table from an
extensive breakfast menu, which caters for all tastes, including our famous full English breakfast!
Company accounts can be arranged with our hotel management team.
Adelaide Suite
The Adelaide Suite at the Appleby Inn Hotel was built in 1990 along with the hotel extension. It served
as a small function room and breakfast area before its most recent extension in 2005, when we
extended the Suite to double its size, enabling us to cater for larger functions.
The Adelaide Suite takes its name from a public house, that before its demolition, was located in
Appleby Magna.
For many years our main function suite, called the Sir John Moore Room, doubled as an a la carte
restaurant and was located upstairs. Many celebrations and events were hosted here and we even
have a framed photograph of our first wedding reception in our hotel reception. Our decision to
extend the Adelaide Suite was to make it more accessible and versatile for guests. We refurbished the
Sir John Moore room into additional bedrooms and sacrificed a couple of rooms to extend the
Adelaide Suite. The re-location and addition of more accommodation has taken our tally of rooms to
26.
Our function suites have hosted a wide variety of events and celebrations over the years, from
presentation evenings to weddings, birthdays to charity dinners, we have helped create some lasting
memories whilst building an excellent reputation as a function venue.
