Quarterly Newsletter Nov. 2014 MANA A National Latina Organization MANA de Imperial Valley hosts the 2014 Las Primeras Gala & Scholarship Fundraiser From left: Gloria Munoz-Brunswick, Yazmin Arrellano Torres and Norma Sierra-Galindo On Friday, October 17, MANA de Imperial Valley held its Annual Las Primeras Gala & Scholarship Fundraiser at the Old Eucalyptus in El Centro. The Gala raised over $20,000 which will be used to fund scholarships for high school Latinas and educational programs in Imperial County. Attendees heard inspirational messages from the three honorees: Norma Sierra Galindo, Gloria Munoz-Brunswick and Yazmin ArrellanoTorres. A special thank you to Las Primeras Coordinator, Lillian Pozos and MANA President, Rebecca Terrazas-Baxter for organizing the event. MANA would also like to thank the Las Primeras sponsors for their generous support. MANA will be having its annual membership mixer Thursday, January 22nd, 5:30-7:30pm at the Holiday Inn Express Conference Rooms A&B, in El Centro. This is a great opportunity to become a MANA member or renew your annual dues. New or returning members that pay their membership dues before or on the day of the Mixer will be entered into a drawing for a Southwest Airline ticket! Contact Monica Lepe-Negrete for membership information at [email protected] MANA Scholarship Applications Scholarship applications will be posted in January 2015. Go to www.ivmana.org to download the application. Applications will also be available at local high school counseling centers. MANA members are all invited to attend the monthly MANA meetings MANA de Imperial Valley Board meets on the first Thursday of the month at 6 pm at the County Administration Building, Second floor Conference Room, 940 West Main St., El Centro. Congratulations to Rosyo Ramirez for receiving the 2014 President’s Award. Rosyo has been MANA Secretary the last two years and this year coordinated the very successful Hang Clothes for a Cause with MANA 1st Annual Clothes Drive. MANA's original intent was to provide a voice for Mexican-American women at the national, state and local levels. The organization has since expanded into a diverse group of Latinas who continue to develop their abilities in political, social and professional fields. Conference keynote speaker, Yazmin Arrellano Torres, Public Works Director/City Engineer for the City of Brawley, welcomed a very enthusiastic group of young ladies. She encouraged the students to pursue Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) educational pathways. Yazmin was also one of the 2014 Las Primeras Honorees. The students enjoyed a light breakfast and lunch and received a conference t-shirt and backpacks courtesy of IVC. MANA de Imperial Valley appreciates all the individuals that assisted in making this conference a reality as well as all the volunteers who assisted in setting up, serving lunch, etc. and the students who attended. A special thank-you to Denise Cabanilla and Martha Singh, MANA Hermanitas Coordinators and Dr. Martha Garcia, MANA Public Relations Coordinator for all the time they dedicated to this event. The YLLC was sponsored by MANA de Imperial Valley in collaboration with Imperial Valley College, SB 70 Outreach Programs. The students arrived bright and early at IVC. Career Mentoring Personal Development, Health and Social Media MANA Board members were in attendance to assist with coordination of workshop presentations and other needed tasks. Esperanza Colio-Warren, Imperial County Community & Economic Development Manager, gave a wonderful and encouraging presentation to the students.
