Steps in helping the cause of cockfighting: Editorial: Show our force 2 RB Sugbo and MANA 2 All of these are part of MANA’s intention to afford ordinary chicken raisers with valuable information and technical knowledge. Performance enchancing 3 Cocking knowledge offered by others are quite expensive and beyond the reach of most ordinary sabungeros. Gamefowl dispersal Featured bloodline: The 4 4 Page 2 Roosterman Int’l E ditorial: Flex our muscles, show our force By Re y Ba jen ting, founder MANA The MANA poster depicting PETA’s offensive against sabong in the Philippines Cockfighting is supposed to be a universal sport. With history that dates back from the days of the Chinese dynasties to the Persian and Roman empires. But as time passed by, so-called social norms changed. What was at one time or another, a sport of kings, generals and even presidents, has now been outlawed in the very places where it once blossomed. The grandest bulwark of cockfighting to fall was the United States. Thanks but no thanks to these so-called animal rights advocates. These ARAs might be doing the right thing. But against cockfighting they are doing it for a wrong reasons. Cockfighting is never cruelty to chickens. Cockfighting is never a breeding ground of criminals. Cruelty? When roosters, since time in memorial love to fight to death? It is their nature. Cockpits as haven of criminals? Why? Don’t criminal go to churches? We don’t ban religion because of this fact. Why ban cockfighting? Truth is on our side. In some places, like in the Philippines, we have the numbers too. Enough numbers to earn the respect of politicians, if not, instill fear upon them. Thus, it is up to us to unite, flex our muscles and show our force. Why RB S ugbo Gamefowl Technology is supporting the ideals of M ANA “Measured against the eternity, our time on earth is just a blink of an eye. But the consequence of it will last forever. The deeds of this life are destiny of the next” --- Rick Warren in his book the Purpose Driven Life. The above quotation is in dedication to a friend who passed away a few years ago. Ernesto “Erning”Panuncillo. To us, who had known him well, he was more than just a dedicated sabungero. Ever helpful to anybody who needed his expertise; he was extremely honest; and selfless, almost to a fault, he was indeed an epitome of a Filipino cocker. He was always helping me in my cocking ventures. When I decided to go full blast with breeding some years back, he helped me sourced out top breeding materials. It was because of him that I was able to acquire the patriarch of all the RB Sugbo ponkan lines -- my favorite brood cock “Ponkan,” an EDL/Excellence sweater, who at the time was otherwise, definitely not for sale in the hands of his brother Arthur, proprietor of the cockers and agrivet product distribution chain,Pacific Barato. Most of all, he was the one who first mentioned my name to publisher Manny Berbano. It led to my writing for Pit Games and Llammado magazines, an opportunity I cherished most. Because of my knowing Manny I was able to acquire more top-quality imported and local materials; and, met in person, distinguished breeders, and legends of our time. And, because of Pit Games and Llammado, I gained new friends and customers from as far as the Ilocos regions in the north, and Basilan in the south, not to mention the many others outside the country. These things, I owed to Sanga. Erning was also instrumental to the mission-vision of RB Sugbo chicken venture. Sanga had repeatedly told me: “Breed for the common sabungeros, the ordinary cockers and small time breeders who have neither the access nor the means to acquire expensive fowl. And, don’t just sell them chickens, also afford them technology.” His idea was that we will not just breed and sell fowl but also take active part in technology transfer, thus the name RB Sugbo Gamefowl Technology. (By kamama Rey Bajenting) Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 3 Feature: Non-drug Performance Enhancing Factor From a study By RB Sugbo Gamefowl Technology Masang Nagmamanok (MANA) Inc., is always looking forward to helping ordinary chicken raisers. Thus, MANA, in partnership with RB Sugbo Gamefowl Technology, undertakes studies on effective methods in gamefowl management that are affordable to most of us. One such study promotes enhancing the performance of the gamefowl without administering Performance Enhancing Drugs (PED. Without doubt, with the kind of evolution gamefowl breeding has undergone in the Philippines, the aspect of gamefowl conditioning has assumed a much greater role in the outcome of a cockfight. Whereas, sometime ago it was rather breeding or quality of the gamefowl that almost always told the difference between winning and losing, now, the situation could be a different story. In the 1960’s when the American gamefowl, then called Texas by Filipinos, started coming in from the US, they were so dominating that they virtually wiped our native fighting chickens—the Bisaya or Tagalog, Balulang or Batangas, the Bolinaos and the rest—out from the face of the earth. A couple of decades later, the Negros breeders, most of whom were rich hacienderos and as such had access to expensive breeds from the US, took over and dominated the cocking scene. Who knows; if it was due to their having superior knowledge in gamefowl genetics, or sheer advantage in blood- line and chicken quality? Another couple of decades later, the situation had change. Imported materials had become accessible and available even to the not-so-rich and to the growing number of US based Filipinos. More and more Filipino gamefowl fanciers had got hold of imported trios, broodcocks and hens. Subsequently the offspring of these imported materials found their way to relatives, friends and buyers. Thousands of Filipinos then was in possession of high caliber fowl. Now it seems, at top level competition, gamefowl are already created about equal. Therefore, some emphasis should shift toward discovering superior conditioning methods. For answers, many look up to performance enhancing drugs—steroids, hormones, stimulants-- available in the market, may they be manufactured for human or for chickens. Some, like us at RB Sugbo Gamefowl Technology, go as far as exploring non-drug Performance Enhancing Factors (PEFs), many of which are quiet natural and inher- ent in gamefowl physiology. Note that vitamin supplements such as b12 and b complex, multi vitamins and minerals, glucose and the likes are nor classified as drug but as nutritional supplements. One of these non-drug PEFs, is the concept of stress management in pointing the gamefowl. It is anchored on the principle that stress triggers adrenaline rush and adrenaline rush could do wonders if experienced at the right moment. Yes, very natural indeed. In face of danger, the body has a natural defense mechanism. When faced with stressful and threatening situations, the body secretes the hormone adrenaline otherwise known as epinephrine. It will activate all the mechanism and instinct of survival in animals. It prepares the body for war. Secretion of adrenaline, or the so-called adrenaline rush, enhances production of energy, activates and alerts all the sensory processes and shuts down less important functions of the organs. It leads to high blood sugar levels, faster heart rate and higher blood pressure. It triggers energy production. It drives the body to optimum levels of energy to achieve greater-thannormal levels of physical capability. Now it seems, at top level competition, gamefowl are already created about equal. Therefore, some emphasis should shift toward discovering superior conditioning methods. Featured bloodline: The blakliz The blakliz is the personal line of RB Sugbo. Named after wife Liza, It was not intended for sale. But a few friends and customers insisted and managed to acquire some. Now RB Sugbo breeds two lines of blakliz. The peacombs that are beautiful and sleek looking are semi- commercial line. The blakliz exclusive- straight comb and ugly --remains exclusive, thus the name. The blakliz started with a cross between a 7time winner Richard Bates black and the blue face. Ponkan, the original broodcock of our ponkan bloodline, was then bred to the black pullets of this black x blueface. The following year the offspring were then bred back to ponkan. I In 2005, Jesse Ledesma won the PAGBA stag derby. His last fight was a black bonanza stag that clinched him the championship in spectacular manner. RB Sugbo, through the intercession of partner Raul Ebeo, who was at the derby, managed to acquire said champion stag. This stag was then bred to the 3/4 ponkan, 1/8 bates black and 1/8 blue face pullets. This became the foundation and still the composition of the blakliz exclusive. The peacomb blakliz has some infusion of other bloodlines. Now RB Sugbo has decided to breed the blakliz extensively in order to make it available to the many ordinary sabungeros that have long expressed interest in acquiring the blakliz. The blakliz and, their other new line the midnight grey will soon join the sugbo ponkan and sugbo lemon in the open market. The blakliz Dispersal project fulfills commitment The MANA dispersal of young breeders has completed fulfilling its commitment to a number of interested kamanas who acquired priority numbers last year . The program, failed to serve these kamanas last year despite their having priority numbers. This year however, all of them who still signified intention to avail were properly accommodated. A total of 28 kamanas with priority numbers were able to avail of a set each of 1 male and 4 females of 2-3 months old breeding materials. In addition, 78 others were able to avail of the program for 2011. The breeders all came from RB Sugbo Gamefowl Technology. Each of the kamanas who availed contributed P2 thousand to cover shipment; per head allowances of farm hands; and other expenses incidental to the program. All other expenses were subsidized by RB Sugbo. RB Sugbo has also turned over 270 heads or 135 pairs of young breeders to Bmeg for a similar dispersal program. Bmeg has been subsidizing RB Sugbo and Garces Bros game- farm to produce some materials for the Bmeg-Mana dispersal project in Central and Eastern Visayas. A yard of chickens at the MANA dispersal farm in Cebu.
