The Sandhills Longleaf
Pine Conservation Partnership is holding a Longleaf &
Lunch educational morning
Saturday, Oct. 8, for
landowners interested in
learning more about the benefits of longleaf pine trees.
The partnership plans to
visit two local sites and has
speakers committed to discuss a host of different topics,
including cost share programs, economic and wildlife
benefits, tree planting, maintenance and management.
Company
representatives
such as tree planters and consulting foresters will also be
on hand to talk to landowners. In addition, information
will be discussed regarding
the long-term existence of
longleaf on landowner property through programs such
as Safe Harbor, estate planning and easements.
Informational
handouts
will also be available to all
participants.
The event is free, but registration is limited so anyone
interested must register by
calling (843) 335-8350. The
event will be held in and
around Patrick.
Transportation to site visits
is provided. Updated information will be available at
www.chesterfieldswcd.com/l
ongleaf.html.

Jones Furniture cuts ribbon at new location
Jones Furniture is open for business at its new temporary location, 125 Second St. in downtown Cheraw. Jones is building a new
showroom on S.C. Highway 9 and hope to move there in approximately six months. Their old location at 1 Village Park will be the
home of Chesterfield County Habitat for Humanity's new Habitat Restore. Pictured above, center, John Paul Jones, Charles Skipper and Debra Patterson cut the ribbon, joined by Greater Cheraw Chamber Chair Kappie Griggs (far left) and Cheraw Chamber President Patsy Hendley (far right). Also pictured are Cheraw Town Councilwoman Jacqueline Ellerbe-Shannon and Cheraw
Mayor Scott Hunter.

“We have land in Chesterfield (County) that is too
sandy to farm economically,”
said Babb. “Longleaf is an
excellent choice on those
soils and can maximize both
the economic and wildlife
benefits.”
Department of Natural Resources Red-cockaded Woodpecker Recovery Project
Coordinator Paige Koon
talked with Stobaugh about
the DNR Safe Harbor program. Her explanations were
timely when, later in the day,
a trio of foraging red-cockaded woodpeckers suddenly
appeared within 25 feet of a
video stop.
In addition to habitat video
footage, Stobaugh interviewed local landowners
John Ivester and Maria
Kendall about their longleaf
management protocols. Both
Ivester and Kendall have
working relationships with
the USDA-NRCS, which offers technical and financial
assistance to landowners
through various programs.
Marlboro County DC
Frank Stevens answered
questions regarding the historic range of longleaf as well
as NRCS programs available
in South Carolina.
The majority of the footage
was taken in the Carolina
Sandhills National Wildlife
Refuge, which is one of the
southeast’s premier longleaf
sites. Refuge manager Lyne
Askins discussed various aspects of the refuge and the
newly formed Southeast Longleaf Pine Conservation Partnership.
NRCS is creating the video
as one outreach component of
state and local campaigns to
promote the conservation of
the longleaf pine ecosystem.
