EDITOR’S NOTE
Welcome to our new newsletter! We hope you find it
more aesthetically pleasing and informative than our
previous one. I won’t take it personally!
With a new year brings some major happenings in Kincora: Condo developments, truck routes and cell towers. Read inside for the updates on all these topics and
watch the boards in the community for potential public
forums on any of these topics. We are hoping that some
of these organizations will want to listen to our community residents.
I hope you had a good holiday season and wish you all
a Happy New Year!

Cellular Tower
Plans in Kincora
On October 31, 2013, TELUS submitted a development permit with the City of Calgary to build a 40
metre telecommunications antenna structure in the
community of Kincora. This structure is to be built
near the exit from Symons Valley Road south to
Stoney Trail west. This development permit is still outstanding. On December 8, 2014, TELUS also submitted a development permit to build a telecommunications antenna structure on 38 Kincora Rise NW - this
is the private property of the Symons Valley United
Church.
The City of Calgary had asked our community association for input regarding these structures with
a clear understanding that the City of Calgary is not
the approving authority; Industry Canada is the approving authority for all telecommunication antenna
structures. The community association sent a letter
clearly stating we were against both of these structures being built, and sent the same letter to our MLA
Jim Prentice. At this time, TELUS has not communicated why they need two towers in such close proximity,
and shows no indication that they will communicate
with us at all on these matters. The community association will keep you apprised of any forthcoming
details or developments.
Shaganappi Trail
Truck Route Update
The City of Calgary is currently in the process of changing Shaganappi Trail (north of Stoney Trail to 144 Avenue
N.W.) into an authorized truck route. On December 17,
2014, the transportation department will present their
plan to City council. On January 12, 2015, city council
will vote on this proposal. The Kincora Community Association has two significant issues with this:
1.Safety: Currently, there is an insufficient barrier on
Shaganappi Trail along a strip of houses that are
in Kincora. The backyards of these homes are right
against Shaganappi Trail itself. Since the road was
built on top of the berm, and not beside it, there is
no protection for these homes. At this time, anything
could come off of one of those trucks and would
crash in to the backyard or the home itself. This is
unacceptable. Considering what happened over the
summer off of Stoney Trail, when the tire came off a
truck and crashed through three different backyards
before coming to a stop, the potential for injury in this
case is very high.
2.Sound: A sound study was done in September 2014
to measure the noise level at certain times during the
day. At all times measured, the sound levels came in
under the required threshold for Kincora to be put on
the list for a sound barrier. It is important to note that
only when we have met the threshold for sound at all
times measured, will we be put on the waiting list for
a sound barrier. At that time, it could still take another
decade or two to get to us on the list. We feel this is
also an unacceptable strategy.
In order to bring these issues to the transportation department, a meeting was arranged with our Councillor, Joe Magliocca, the president’s of the Sherwood,
Evanston, and Kincora’s community associations, and
two individuals from the City of Calgary’s Transportation Planning Department. But we feel not all of the
concerns from the community associations were heard.
We are continuing to question Joe Magliocca’s office
and are requesting that a public information session be
scheduled in advance of the Council meeting where this
is to be passed in its current form. Please watch for a
potential open house session on the Shaganappi Trail
Truck Route issue.

Lakes
Canada has a lot of great things in abundance, like
hockey players, parkas and Tim Hortons franchises.
But did you know we also have more lake area
than any other country in the world? It’s true. The
Great White North has 563 lakes larger than 100
square kilometres. The Great Lakes alone contain
about 18 per cent of the world’s fresh lake water.
That’s a lot of water. Makes you wonder if all of our
country’s allies are actually just thirsty.

On November 20, 2014 I attended the Calgary Planning
Commission meeting where this condominium project
was discussed and approved for a Development Permit by
a vote of 7-2. After the presentation by the City Planner, Neil
MacDonald, and very few questions from the Commission
members, it was given approval with certain conditions. We
were very disappointed that the concerns we have raised
in the past were almost completely ignored. The only objections that came forward were from Mr. Logan (General
Manager-Transportation) and Mr. Morrow (University of
Calgary). Mr Logan was dismayed that the Traffic Impact
Study was still not completed, yet the project was brought
forward for approval. His major concern was that the transportation infrastructure would not be able to handle the
resulting vehicular movements along 37th Street and Symons Valley Parkway. Mr. Morrow did have objections to
the street access to the site, the design, the massing and
the project being incompatible with the surrounding residential and that there was no justification for a relaxation of
height limits. Nonetheless the project may proceed given
the majority vote in favour. The Chair of the CPC seemed
quite proud at how quickly this project moved through the
system, given that this new design was only presented to
the planners in February of this year. Our position is that we
find the design, density, parking and height all to be objectionable and we will be filing an appeal against this project
one more time before the Subdivision Development Appeal Board. This information will be updated on the website
www.kcacondo.org.

Kindergarten: where your child’s talents are treasured
Kindergarten is the start of an exciting adventure full of
promise for children and their families. We understand
that children bring their own unique talents and gifts to
their learning experience, which is why we personalize
students’ learning to help them reach their full potential.
In the early years, personalized attention can make a
meaningful difference in children’s lives.
From the very first day of kindergarten, our teachers begin looking into the future to help children take those
next steps in their learning. We never lose sight of our
ultimate goal, which is for every student to complete
high school with a foundation of learning necessary to
thrive in life, work and continued learning.
For those children who don’t attend a preschool program, kindergarten will be their first introduction to
school. This first year will be filled with significant early
experiences they will remember for a lifetime.
We are proud to be a part of creating those memories.
We are proud to provide learning as unique as every student. Come learn with us!

Why is someone who is

Because: Types of clouds are numbered according to

Dental Health
and
Your Pet
Jennifer L. Scott, D.V.M.
I see dental disease in almost every pet I examine in
my veterinary clinic. Unfortunately preventative dental care is not something that most pet owners start
early and continue daily. Does your pet have gleaming white teeth? What about his back molars? Are
they free of hard tartar? Are the gums a nice pink or
is there a line of hot red swollen inflammation along
the teeth? Put your nail against the edge of the gum
where it meets the tooth, does your pet wince and pull
away?
Dental disease is graded by veterinarians depending
on severity from grade 1 needing a simple cleaning
with some plaque and tartar to grade 4 with open
draining holes around rotten foul-smelling teeth and
gums. Pets are likely in constant pain with anything
beyond grade 2 dental disease. Taking care of your
pet’s teeth can be time-consuming and expensive.
Owners tend to ignore the teeth because they don’t
see them, but healthy teeth are directly linked to your
pet’s short and long-term well being.
Many people believe if they feed their pet a hard food
they will not get dental disease. The value of specialized diets and dental products is limited, but really, if
there was some magic component added to food that
eliminated dental disease, wouldn’t people be eating
it to avoid our own dental disease and the ensuing
costs.
A dog or cat, ideally, should have their teeth brushed
daily. Use a soft small tooth brush. Finger brushes
do not get under the gum line. Animal toothpastes
do not foam or contain sodium bicarbonate so they
can be swallowed. They come in flavors ranging from
tuna to chicken to beef. Yum, yum! Many of my clients
have even taught their pets to tolerate electric tooth
brushes.
A few pets will not allow brushing under any circumstance. These pets will derive some benefit from chewing products as well as a specialized dental diet. Some
10
enzymatic products even claim benefits if just sprayed
in the pet’s mouth, but none of these products outperform the physical action of daily tooth brushing.
Never give your pet hard bones, ice, and very hard
toys. Fractured crowns expose pulp and cause dental
abscesses that may require emergency surgery. Abscesses hurt.
Pets should have preventative cleanings as required
by the individual, but more often owners will only
agree if tartar, gingivitis, or periodontal disease becomes visually obvious. Cleaning and examination of
your pet’s teeth is done under a general anesthetic. No
self-respecting pet will tolerate a complete scaling and
polishing below the gum line awake. It is the area you
don’t see that typically the worse disease is brewing.
I recently did a dental cleaning of a young dog’s mouth
expecting no or little disease. Visual examination prior
to the cleaning everything looked good, but I discovered four deep pockets between the gums and four
teeth. Dental radiographs confirmed the bone around
the roots of the teeth was being eaten away by infection. The removal of diseased teeth allows a better
chance to keep the surrounding teeth healthy. This
disease would not have been discovered without a
proper examination of an anesthetized pet. Superficial
scraping of visual tartar only hides disease and lulls a
person into thinking their pet’s mouth is healthy.
Rotten teeth and gums can be a portal to bacteria
entering the blood stream and traveling through out
the pet’s body. Dental disease advances more quickly
when pets have other illnesses such as kidney disease
or diabetes, and dental disease can make other diseases more difficult to control. When the teeth hurt it
can also cause an otherwise sweet pet to become cantankerous. Our pets are living longer than ever with
advances in veterinary medicine and superior diets so
your pets are going to need those healthy teeth also
longer…start brushing early.

Home and
Garage break-in
prevention
Keep your doors locked, even when you’re home. Ensure your garage doors and windows are also closed
and locked.
Install exterior motion lights to brighten dark areas
around doors or windows, to make them easily seen by
neighbours and passersby.
Always close and lock any windows that could be used
to gain access to your home while you’re away or sleeping, even on hot summer nights.
Store important or irreplaceable documents and items
away from your home, such is in a safety deposit box.
If you see homes with open doors, front doors with keys
left in the locks or a neighbour’s car with the truck left
open, give them a quick call to let them know.
Consider installing home and vehicle alarm systems and
vehicle anti-theft devices.
It is also important to take proactive measures when
leaving your home for extended periods of time.
•Make your home looked lived in. Put lights, radios
and TVs on variable timers. If you’re leaving a vehicle
outside your house, have a neighbour move it periodically. Arrange for lawn and garden upkeep.
•Either cancel newspapers, mail and other deliver items
or have a trusted neighbor collect them for you while
you are away
•Garages are a favourite target for burglars — they contain valuable items such as vehicles, garden tools and
bicycles, and they’re often left open and unattended.
The Calgary Police Service suggests these simple tips
to help prevent thefts from garages:
•Protect your valuables: Put curtains or blinds up to
cover any windows in the garage, so thieves can’t look
for items to steal, or see if your vehicle is there.
•Make it secure: The person-door between your house
and attached garage should swing inward into the garage, be solid core, and have a deadbolt lock. The same
goes for other exterior person-doors on your garage.
•Don’t give thieves an open invitation: Keep your overhead door closed and your other garage doors locked,
even when you are at home — this includes the door
between your home and an attached garage.
•Check your locks: Secure your person-doors with
deadbolts (which need to be operated from the outside with a key).
•Make it bright: Install lights near your garage to keep
the area around doors and windows lit: These can be
motion sensor or photo (light) sensitive, so that they
turn on automatically when someone walks past or
when the sun sets.
•Put up a number: Put your house number on your
garage, especially if it opens up into a back alley. This
helps emergency personnel to identify which house is
yours.
•Keep records: Catalogue your garage’s contents, including serial numbers of valuable items and vehicle
identification numbers. Taking photographs, videos
or digital recordings of contents can also help police
and your insurance company if there’s a break-in, fire,
or flood.
•Double-check: Never drive away without checking
that your overhead garage door is down. Also check
the operation of

Sledding Safety
Alberta Health Services, EMS would like to remind parents and children of some basic sledding safety tips as
the winter season continues. Sledding injuries can result
from collisions with stationary objects such as trees and
rocks or with other people on the hill. Unprotected falls
can result in injury if you lose control at high speeds. Everyone is at risk – especially children. Educate your family how to stay safe by following these simple reminders
and have a fun day on the toboggan hill.
Equipment
•Ensure your sled is in good condition. Do not use sleds
with broken parts, sharp edges, or splits in the material.
•Currently, there are no helmets designed specifically
for sledding. However children should wear a properly
fitted helmet designed for high impact collisions, such
as hockey, cycling, or climbing helmets.
Plan ahead
•Dress warmly in layers and anticipate weather changes.
•Consider bringing extra sets of gloves and toques to
exchange wet garments for dry ones.
•Take breaks to warm up out of the cold.
•Ensure frostbite hasn’t affected any exposed skin.
•Even when properly protected from the elements, the
finger tips, toes, ears, the tip of the nose, and other
high points on the face such as the forehead and cheek
bones can be affected by frostbite.
•If frost bite has occurred, treat it by first removing the
individual out of the cold environment. Gently warm
the affected skin by placing a warm hand over it or
by placing the affected part in warm water (not hot;
~41°C max.) until re-warmed.
Hazards
•Avoid hills that are too steep, or too icy – you can lose
control very quickly.
•Choose hills free of obstacles such as trees, rocks, utility poles, or fences.
•Be mindful of clothing that contains drawstrings, or
loose clothing, such as scarves, which can present a
choking hazard if they become caught or snagged.
14
Winter has arrived and it’s time to be mindful of how the
buildup of ice and snow on city sidewalks can post a risk
of injury to Calgarians. Older adults, those with mobility
issues or parents pushing strollers or walking with young
children, may find it treacherous to venture out if neighbours are not diligent about clearing the ice and snow.
All of us can help make walking in our communities safe
for everyone if we work together and follow the regulations set out in Calgary’s Street Bylaw.
Property owners are responsible for clearing all sidewalks adjacent to their property. This means removing all
snow and ice down to the bare concrete within 24 hours
after the snow stops falling. If, as a property owner, you
do not live at the residence, it is important to work with
tenants or arrange for a contractor to clear the snow. It’s
also important to note that if a property is being developed, the developer is often the owner responsible to
clean sidewalks around a construction site or empty lot.
The property owner is ultimately responsible for snow
clearing under the bylaw. For any ice that is difficult to
remove, a de-icing mixture is available at fire halls or
Roads depots. Please bring your own container.
Remember that snow from private property cannot be
put onto the road or boulevard. Large mounds of snow
in the street can impede the flow of traffic, limit driver
and pedestrian visibility and hinder Blue Cart and Black
Bin collection.
Sidewalks also need to be clear of obstructions such as
electrical cords. When plugging in your vehicle, make
sure you don’t place an electrical cord on or over any
portion of a street.
Have you considered being a Snow Angel? It can be a
challenge for some residents to shovel and clear their
sidewalks. The Snow Angel campaign encourages citizens to be good neighbours by helping older adults and
others in need with their snow removal. All you have to
do is adopt someone’s sidewalk this winter and keep it
clear.
Let’s remember that snow, ice and obstructions on our
sidewalks can result in serious injuries and can cause
those with limited mobility to be confined indoors. Be a
good neighbour and clear the snow.
To find out more about snow and ice removal in Calgary
visit calgary.ca/snow or contact 311. For information
on how to become a Snow Angel, visit Calgary.ca/snow
angels.

One of the best plants for removing formaldehyde released from carpet and other materials in our homes
and offices.
It likes bright indirect light; preferably a northern exposure. This plant is perfect for the office because does very
well under florescent lights.
by Cindy deJager
Heartleaf Philodendron (Philodendron scandens) also
known as the Sweetheart Plant.
There are two kinds of philodendron, the upright and
the trailing. For the office I recommend the trailing variety. They don’t mind being kept in a small pot and they
are very lovely hanging in a north facing window or sitting on a bookshelf.
Easy Plants for the Office
The short, dark days of winter don’t have to be dreary
– now is the time to celebrate the ‘indoor season’ with
some easy and favourite plants. Not all offices have ideal
light, but some plants can do very well under florescent
lighting for a long time. These popular houseplants will
transform your office from stark white to instantly appealing and comfortable. Each does well in low light or
under florescent lighting, but keep in mind that all plants
need some natural light to stay healthy and beautiful.
Hanging
Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
Attention Calgary
property owners
Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
I have mine hanging over the hutch on my desk. It is
quite full and lush and has really cool spiderettes hanging down. They prefer natural but not direct sunlight.
Upright
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii)
This elegant plant is at the top of the list for removal
of toxins such as formaldehyde, ammonia and carbon
monoxide from indoor air. The foliage is attractive with
long dark-green, deeply veined leaves. It grows up to 3
feet tall and will do well in medium to low light.

Evanston’s Second Access - Now Open
In mid November of 2014 The City of Calgary opened
the right in/right out ramp (westbound Stoney Trail to
northbound 14 Street NW/southbound 14 Street onto
westbound Stoney Trail) creating a second point of access for the community of Evanston.
This project was completed a full year ahead of schedule
thanks to the participation and coordination between
The City of Calgary, Qualico Developers and the Province
of Alberta.
“I’ve heard concerns for some time from area residents
about accessibility into the community of Evanston,”
said Joe Magliocca, councillor for Ward 2. “This second
point of access is a huge win for the community, and
it’s a bonus to have it open a year ahead of schedule.
It’s also nice to see the coordination between the developers, The City and The Province. I’ve been a major
proponent of this project and am happy to see it built.”
While there is some minor work to be completed (permanent signage and additional landscaping in the
spring, for example) these ramps opened a full year
ahead of schedule. Construction was completed between August and November of 2014.
This project was completed within its $2.6 million budget.
Symons Valley Road re-opened
Symons Valley Road was completely closed between
144 Avenue N.W. and Sage Meadow Circle from June 16
to November 26, 2014. During this time, crews upgraded Symons Valley Road to accommodate future residential development. The upgrades included improving the road structure to better serve the heavy truck
and vehicle traffic that uses this roadway on a daily basis. Because of these upgrades, Symons Valley Road now
has a life cycle of approximately 30 years, and is 50 per
cent closer to final completion. The road will ultimately
be widened to two lanes in each direction. During the
closure of Symons Valley Road, all heavy truck traffic was
detoured to Shaganappi Trail. Symons Valley Road is
currently re-opened to truck traffic. The City of Calgary,
Stantec, and Brookfield Residential would like to thank
residents and motorists in the area for their patience
and support during construction.
