Grove Hill NEWS

Autumn 2011
A Semiannual Publication for Friends of Grove Hill Cemetery
It’s All About Our Friends
In October Friends of Grove
Hill (FGH) celebrates its first year
as an auxiliary agent of the Grove
Hill Cemetery board. With a little
tooting of our own celebratory
horns, we can say its been a grand
beginning.
We’ve also conducted a most
successful monument restoration
workshop that has resulted in the
preservation of several of the
stones that had fallen to the wears
of time. (Additional workshops are
noted on page 2 of this newsletter.)
Thanks to the talents of Duanne
Puckett and Mike Harrod we’ve
enjoyed three successful tours of
Grove Hill which nearly 100 people have attended. (Our popular
wine and cheese tour is on the calendar again for October 18th, see
page 2.) The tours introduce attendees to Grove Hill residents
whose names and fame live on
through the stories of their lives.
FGH has also received some
most appreciated (tax deductible)
donations that helped us with the
purchase of new trees and plantings
and will help us in the future with
the upgrade of the chapel.

Mike Harrod, upper left, and Gay
Guthrie, work diligently to restore a
footstone broken from the foundation.
The process takes several steps:
cleaning the stone especially at the
break; straightening the foundation;
attaching & stabilizing the broken
pieces.
Friends of Grove Hill Cemetery are adopting family plots without ancestors to restore and preserve stones that have succumbed to the ravages of time. Descendants whose family plots have stones that need
repair can commission certified preservationists to restore their monuments. A donation to Friends of Grove Hill plus the cost of materials can
preserve even broken monuments. Training workshops to learn how to
preserve monuments are offered in September 2011 and 2012. Use the
training to preserve stones in Grove Hill or a family plot elsewhere.
All Friends of Grove Hill donations are tax deductible.

Friends of Grove Hill Heroes
Friends of Grove Hill (FGH) recognizes this season’s heroes: attendees of our summer monument restoration workshop:
(l-r) Mark Brooks, Linda Clemmons, Lucy Long, Ann Johnson, Robert Spencer, Robin Barmore, Arlene Redinger, Whitie Gray,
Bonnie Burks Gray, Gay Guthrie, Mike Harrod, Vance Burnett, Debbie Harrod, Duanne Puckett, Charles Long.
Not pictured: John & Carla Gerding, and Don Bentley.
Superheroes are:
Gay Guthrie, Mike
Harrod, and Whitie
Gray who have completed restoration of
several stones.
Families whose ancestors’ stones are in
need of repair are legally responsible to
maintain them. A minimal donation to FGH
to cover tools and materials will restore
monuments for future
generations to appreciate. To learn more
contact Whitie Gray,
502-633-6941.
