What to do?

for kiwi, our national icon.
There’s certain times of year when we all feel a little far
from home… your mother’s birthday, the ANZAC service
in April, the summer months when we’d so much rather
be hanging out on the beach, and of course Waitangi
Day in February.
Just remember every $200 you
raise will protect
a breeding pair of kiwi in the wild
for a whole
year… and we all know what bree

’t have to worry
about predators!
Waitangi Day is a day of national celebration; reflecting on
what it means to be a New Zealand and remembering who
we are as a people. Celebrate your roots and expel your
home sickness with a good time, for a good cause.

Sausage sizzles
We’ve put together some options to get the ideas flowing
and the plans forming. And remember, you don’t have to
start from scratch. There are already plenty of Waitangi Day
celebrations around the world – from pub crawls in London
to sand sculptures in the US – that can easily be transformed
into a fundraiser with a collection bucket or BBQ loaded
with sausages!

Full blown kiwi party (think stubbies, fish and chips,
Swandris, Steinlager, buzzy bees, gumboots and marmite!)

Whiskey tasting (because who doesn’t enjoy a
good whiskey!)

Quiz night (test your mates on kiwi facts)

Mid winter swim / polar bear (because Kiwis have a
reputation for being tough… and sometimes a bit mad)

Indoor cricket / soccer test (a bit of competition is
always healthy)

Physical challenge (because there’s nothing us Kiwis
love more than a test of the brawn)

The definition of a party in New Zealand is a bunch of
mates getting together for a few laughs, possibly around
a BBQ or a bonfire.

Spreading the word!
Once you have your mates, a venue and a great
fundraising idea or two, you’re ready to spread the word!

Create a facebook event page
•
Create a website if you are game
Social media is the easiest option; just set up an event and
invite everyone you can think of – especially all those other
kiwi expats who will be feeling as far from home as you on
our national day. And don’t forget to send out reminders
closer to the day!
•
Tell everyone you know and ask them to tell everyone they
know as well
•
Put up posters at your venue and tell their clients / patrons
•
Continue to remind everyone that the event is coming up

CASESTUDY
Vancouver Waitangi Day 2013
Kiwis Avi and Bryce have been putting on Waitangi
Day celebrations in Vancouver, Canada, for a couple
of years. This year they decided to use the event to help
support New Zealand’s national icon, the kiwi.
After securing a venue in Vancouver, they made contact
with some iconic New Zealand businesses looking to get
a foothold into Vancouver. So with Icebreaker providing
sponsorship and support, The Mad Butcher providing
meat packs for the raffles and sausages for the sizzle, Hell
Pizza providing delicious pizza and Steinlager providing the
libations, they had all the ingredients for a great party (and
a great fundraiser!). Organisations were asked to provide
product and make a monetary donation of $250 in exchange
for advertisement on the day.
Leading up to the event, Avi and Bryce raised money by
selling tickets to the party as well as running a competition to
design the official Vancouver Waitangi Day party t-shirt and
selling them on the website.
On the day they raised money the good old fashioned way, by
selling raffle tickets, holding a sausage sizzle and collecting
money from the coat check – an essential for any Northern
Hemisphere Waitangi Day party – as well as $1 from every
Steinlager sold going to Kiwis for kiwi.
In the end they raised over $13,000 NZD for kiwi
conservation – enough to protect 1300 kiwi in the wild for
a whole year. This was a stellar result, but remember no
amount is too small or too large!

How to get raised money to us
Thank you in advance for all your hard work and
support! It is people like you that give us hope that our
children and grandchildren will still be able to see kiwi
in the wild for years to come.
Once you’ve counted up all your funds, email us to tell
us the great news and then arrange a deposit into our BNZ
bank account.
