Farm & Ranch Life
.
Dr. Michael R. Rosmann, Ph.D
Agricultural safety and health are
improving, but not for psychological
injuries and fatalities
Agricultural
occupations,
defined by the National Institute
for Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH) as farming, ranching,
farm worker, forestry, and commercial fishing, have the highest
rate of occupation-related deaths,
according to a 2015 U.S. Department of Labor report that analyzed
data accumulated for 2013.
The fatality rate of 22.2 per
100,000 persons was well above
transportation/warehousing (13.1
per 100,000), mining/quarrying
and oil/gas extraction (12.3 per
100,000), and construction (9.4 per
100,000).
A 2015 Agricultural Safety
and Health Council of America (ASHCA) publication says
approximately 480 U.S. farmers have died each recent year in
agriculture-related events, which
is about half the number of yearly
agriculture-related fatalities during the early 1990s. Although
progress is occurring in reducing
farming-related fatalities, there is
still room for improvement.
Tractors are the main cause of
farming-related deaths—about 125
annually according to ASCHA.
We are blessed to live in a very loving and caring
community. This has been felt in abundance through
the years and more than ever after the passing of my
husband. The family of Clare Fox thanks everyone for
your love, support, prayers, hospitality, cards, memorials
and friendship. We were wrapped in care and love from
the moment Pastor Norm and Linda came to be with
us at Sanford Hospital after Clare’s
passing. We thank all involved in
Clare’s beautiful service. We
also want to thank our medical
community who gave Clare
exemplary care. Thank you
to Trinity Lutheran Church
and Armstrong Funeral
Home. Clare loved the
Lisbon Community.

Many of these fatalities and many
serious injuries could have been
prevented if roll-over protection
systems (ROPS) were mandated
for tractors.
In Sweden the number of tractor-rollover fatalities has declined
to near zero annually, as almost
all tractors now have mandatory
ROPS.
About 115 children from 0 to
18 years of age succumbed on an
annual basis recently in agricultural workplaces but only 20 percent were actively working. The
other 80 percent were bystanders
or playing in agricultural settings.
The current rate of child fatalities on farms is about half of what
it was a generation ago. Grassroots efforts like farm safety day
camps, Extension workshops, and
the Farm Safety For Just Kids
organization are among the main
contributors to the reduction in
childhood fatalities.
What are the costs of farmingrelated fatalities and injuries? In
2015 the average age of the primary farm operator, and his/her
retirement, were 59 and 74 respectively; the average net farm income
per household was $123,432,
according to the USDA Economic
Research Service.
Multiplying the average net
farm income by 15 years of earning
capacity yields an estimated loss
of $1.85 million per farm operation. The costs of a farmer’s death
to his/her family and community
are greater--perhaps incalculable,
for the emotional pain they suffer
and the knowledge and leadership
which are no longer available.
Non-life threatening injuries take a toll too, for about
61,000 agriculture-related injuries

Valley News
Oh dear, how could a person
write down seven names and send it
off with one missing. The girls met
at Hodenattes for an old age session
of years ago. The one name is energetic, friendly Carmen Cavett. She
was there with oddities in her life
also which packed a lot of fun. This
rover checked her copy and could
not find the seventh person in the
paper which is Carmen Cavett, one
of the fun group.
What a day to live in North
Dakota with up to 70 temp for
March and then white ermine nearly
wiped out. The mower looked
tempting today to scramble the left
over leaves. Instead she went to
baking and it was donuts--the third
batch. This rovers recipe was in a
published cookbook and they are
super--if you like to stand over lard
grease with tablespoon of vinegar
added before the grease gets hot. Set
the kettle in the sink as it goes crazy
when the vinegar is added so better
not let it get too hot--just melted.
Here is the recipe and I’m eating the
third one now with Brooke stating
she would like half the recipe all
made sent to her house. Lard can be
purchased at Teals grocery. If they
find it for you, they might expect
you to bring some donuts. Beat in
mixer, one half cup of oil, one cup
of either sour or sweet milk, one
cup sugar, three eggs beaten, 1/2
tsp salt, one tsp soda, two tsp baking powder, one tsp vanilla, one tsp
nutmeg, four cups flour or enough
to handle the dough. Last cup of
flour may have to be stirred in by
hand. Roll and let stand ten or fifteen minutes --get to work cutting
when the grease sizzles with a drop
of water. Makes a good size batch
but not enough to please everyone.
Sister Ilene Larson fourteen
years younger and not born in the
sandhills would not remember this
sotry of cracklings. My mom Mamie
Hoaby ace in the hole was crackling
gravy. Of course back in the twenties it was depression time to everything was used. Dad Ted Hoaby
grew a large patch of onions--there
is a picture of this rover sitting in
one of them at probably year and a
half old. He sold them for a quarter a
dozen. Then it was gathering scraps
of wood, placing them under a fifty
gallon barrel of water. Fire was
started and a pig run down. Mom
would sit and stir that blood from
the hog and in the evening would
be “brucrub” or blood cake with
pieces of pig fat mixed in, baked in
the oven and coming out like a regular cake. Smear some home made
butter, made my shaking a gallon
pail of cream until it materialized.
Now the blood is taken care of and
knives are sharpened (Ted Hoabys
Dad Christ Hoaby made knives fit
for a king). The hog is dipped into
the boiling water up and down and
hair skinning is on. After sometime
the hog come out pure white glistening hanging in the trees until cut
up, put in a smoke house after cutting fat away which comes to the
crackling stage. It is put in the oven
until rendered with some of small
pieces held back and out comes the
cracklings and they were spread
on a newspaper. An onion was cut
up, sauteed in a cup of dripplings,
stirred and a cup of flour added or
maybe a hand full mixed in adding
a whatever of water or milk. Just
before serving this smooth gravy a
large cup of cracklings was stirred
in. Of course salt and pepper had
to be put in. What a supper when a
large loaf of homemade bread was
sliced up for each plate, covering
it with the glorious tasting gravy
mixed with cracklings.
There was Ilene Larson groping
with all of her heavy musical keyboard and amps and mikes Monday
to play at Parkside for the birthday
party of the month. Ilene goes into
polkas, waltzes, country lore. She
does not read a note so it is planted
in her brain, thousands of songs and
no problems to sign or play them.
She played guitar in a band for years
so has had a lot of practice and with
by Irene Hoenhause
musical folks learned young. Ted
and Mamie Hoaby played at dances
when all six of Hoabys were born-Ted on fiddle, Mom Mamie on the
organ or piano. Back to Parkside
after a flu attack up there, a super
number of residents came out for
the program with hand clapping and
a spring time fever in their blood.
How wonderful to walk into a home
and find this!!!
Last Wed. church was called off
at Parkside 9 in the morn because
of a flu epidemic. This Wed. it will
be full agale again when Ilene’s sis,
Irene a lot older zips in with Easter Parade to begin with. She plays
tunes they call for such as “Don’t
Be Angry” until the clock hits 9:15
and the hymn books come into use.
Here was Pastor Aaron to bring a
great sermon mixed with songs at
9:30. All in all a great multitude
appeared the same as for the birthday party of the month. He is from
the Redeemer Church and what a
spirit to bring into the homes. Next
comes Swingbed at the Hospital.
This rover called on Jan Hansen to
play and she did as Pastor Aaron
gave the great sermon along with
singing. Thanks to all that came and
Jan for zipping away from her job at
the Gazette.
Beverly Anne church time came
and singing went on as Pastor Aaron
zipped in. He does a super job even
being a young smiling Pastor. He
even sang a solo without accompanyment and it was met with many
smiles. Cookie time came at 3:00
with this rover ringing out with
“Easter Parade” and “If Jesus Goes
With Me.” Thanks to all.
The flu is rampant and one that
it hit was Alice Hanson plus Pastor
Norm. They are fine now and may
everyone miss this nuisance with
the gorgeous warm weather and rain
coming down. At Swingbed Dorothy Anderson and this rover had a
great visit over her over a month
problem which included surgery
in Fargo. She stated on Friday she
was to go home and her daughter
Linda would come to spend sometime. Prayers to all of them. Also to
Danny Anderson who is on a list to
get well and Charles and Marlene
Jorgenson.
There was Mike Hoaby zipping
up the Valley and delivering barbecued gizards to this rover. They
were fantastic and was the supper
treat--thanks Mike and he went
home with donuts 7:30 in morn
here comes Brooke Hoenhause to
replenish a plastic bag with donuts
and another with powdered sugar as
she headed to school.
There was Mark Carlblom and
Chesley Knutson bouncing in at
Ruth Carlblom’s to see how she was
doing and a great visit from Milnor.
Oh my, you get acquainted
with people in odd ways. There is
this friendly insurance man who
answered from his office in Wisconsin. Stated it was about sixty
degrees with very little snow, about
the same as in Lisbon, N.D. He is
young, single and very much at his
business and thanks to him for the
chat. This is Zach Nolan of Sun
Prairie, Wisc.
Beverly Anne went on Friday
with a great attendance and Pastor Norm as the sermon giver. He
gave on the one who got his inheritance and ended up with the pigs.
There were Ruth Carlblom, Kay
Reinke, Clarice Mairs and Gerry
Freeberg with relatives and friends
for the church service. This rover
belting out with Easter Parade as
they marched out for cookie time.
Thanks to all that came and may we
not end up like the son who left but
did return and was in the arms of his
Dad--not his brother tho.
Ruth Carlblom and this rover
zipped into Alice Hieggelke apartment and went out with some of her
past treasures in clothes and cards.
Lois Donau put in a call to this
rover and she is a jolly sort to visit
with. This rover put a wrong letter

ANNUAL FORT RANSOM
OFFICIAL NOTICE OF CITY OF
completed SFN 2704 Petition/Certificate
$150
A nationwide rain and snow
reporting network is looking for
volunteers in North Dakota to
become part of the state’s climatological history, says Adnan Akyuz,
state climatologist and professor of climatological practices at
North Dakota State University.
These observers will measure
rainfall, snowfall and snow depth
as part of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow
(CoCoRaHS) Network. Some
observers also measure the water
equivalent of the snow after it
melts.
North Dakota has been collecting precipitation (rainfall and
snowfall) data since the early
1900s in most places. When farmers, engineers, and weather and
river forecasters ask for precipitation data for a given location, that
information comes mostly from
volunteer observers.
“Now is your chance to provide
that data and be a part of the state’s
climatological history,” Akyuz
says. “It’s fun, easy and only takes
five minutes a day.”
North Dakota has more than
300 such volunteer precipitation
observers.
“However, it is not nearly
enough,” Akyuz says. “We need as
many volunteer observers as possible around the state to help forecast
flood potential, as well as drought
assessments. Don’t worry if you
do not know how to do all that.
We have a lot of training materials
for you to become an observer. All
you need is an interest in weather
to participate in the program and a
cylindrical rain gauge.”
In your neighborhood, volunteers of all ages and backgrounds
already may be measuring precipitation in their own backyards as
part of the CoCoRaHS Network,
which has grown to more than
15,000 volunteer observers covering every state.
Data from CoCoRaHS Network volunteers routinely are
being viewed and used by many
professions and organizations,
including meteorologists, hydrologists, emergency managers, city
utilities,
insurance
adjusters,
agribusinesses, engineers, science teachers and the National
Weather Service. Data are used for
many applications, such as water
resource planning, severe storm
warnings, teaching earth science,
predicting crop yields and assessing hail damage.
During March, the network
is running its annual competition
among states called “CoCoRaHS
March Madness.” The idea is to
see how many new observers it can
recruit in each state. North Dakota
was the winner in 2010, 2012 and
2015.
“We want to show the nation
that weather is important in our
state, and we also want to keep
the March Madness Cup here at
home,” Akyuz says.
Go to http://www.cocorahs.

occurred in 2015. ASHCA estimated their medical costs and
lost productivity at $8.3 billion.
ASHCA noted that every day
about 167 agricultural workers suffer lost work-time and 5
percent of these events involve
permanent impairments.
Are farming-related psychological fatalities due to suicide,
and injuries such as anxiety
and depression, decreasing like
farming-related physical fatalities and injuries are decreasing?
Men involved in agriculture
currently are about five times
more likely to undertake suicide (about 25 per 100,000) than
women (about 5 per 100,000)
and about 60 percent more
likely than non-farming men to
undertake suicide. For as long
as reliable data have been available (about 50 years), the yearly
rate of farming-related suicides
has generally been greater than
the fatality rate due to physical

events, and closely tied to farm
economic conditions.
To illustrate, suicides by farm
men more than doubled during the worst part of the 1980s’
Farm Crisis. It isn’t known
how many more farming-related
deaths were purposeful, such as
events that were disguised as
“accidents” to enable survivors
to collect life insurance proceeds.
How often are anxiety and
depressive illnesses and resultant lost days of work on the
farm also underreported? Few
of the people farming have
unemployment insurance coverage; others want to “tough it
out,” so they don’t seek professional help even when needed.
The prevalence of reported
serious psychological injuries
due to anxiety and depression
for the agricultural population is
considerably higher than for the
general U.S. population, as the
recent series of Farm and Ranch
Life articles about the behavioral health of people engaged in
agriculture pointed out.
The annual prevalence for
one or both of these disorders
is about 14 percent among the
general population and about 20
percent among the agricultural
population during profitable
farming eras, but higher during
stressful eras. The cost of lost
productivity due to psychological injuries is probably greater
than for physical injuries, but
not fully known.
Why do NIOSH and other
federal programs not spend more
dollars on the prevention of agricultural injuries and fatalities of
a psychological nature? The
answer is partly that NIOSH and
other federal funding sources
are insufficient, mostly because
the majority of current legislators don’t place priority on these
occupational jeopardies.
Moreover, few private agriculture-related foundations and
corporations offer research,
training or educational funds for
agricultural behavioral health
and safety. It’s easier to generate legislative and public sentiment, and financial investment,
for crop and livestock insurance programs and physical
health issues than for psychological protections of the people
engaged in agricultural occupations.
American residents and institutions could doing much more
to prevent farmer suicides and
behavioral health perils. Farmers are our country’s most
important resource in farming.
Early March in North Dakota
is typically more conducive
to riding a snowmobile than a
motorcycle.
Recent recordhigh temperatures, however,
have resulted in large numbers
of riders taking to the roads to
enjoy the early season.
While motorcycles are a preferred mode of transportation
for many people, precautions
are required by both the motorcycle operator and drivers of
other vehicles, says AAA. In
the past five years there have
been 56 fatal and more than 900
injury crashes in North Dakota
involving motorcycles. A longer season may cause those
numbers to tragically increase.
A few key points can help
make the season safer than
years past.
AAA reminds
motorists to be prepared and to
look twice before making a lane
change or turning left in front of
oncoming traffic. Motorcycles
are more difficult to see in traffic than larger cars and trucks.
Also, while stopping distance
for motorcycles is nearly the
same as for cars, slippery or
sand-covered pavement can
make stopping quickly more
difficult. For this reason, other
drivers need to give motorcyclists an extra margin of safety
by maintaining a safe following
distance. Finally, other drivers should never cut in front
of a motorcyclist, especially
if driving a high-profile vehicle, which can tend to kick-up
rocks and other hazardous road
debris.

Beef Specialist, NDSU Extension Service
Why would calving time in the northern plains change?
This is a good time of the year to
share four years of data and experiences collected at the Dickinson
Research Extension Center on May
calving.
Why? The calving date is more
than a calendar date on the wall of the
barn. The date affects every aspect of
a beef cattle operation and should be
discussed with the utmost diligence.
Producers with several enterprises on the farm or ranch must
fit all on the same calendar in the
same barn. I would be the first to
say, “Avoid a knee-jerk action that
changes the calving date,” but the
discussion needs to be held.
So let’s start. Well, the weather is
nice in most areas, and the traditional
calving time of March and April is
fast approaching. The busiest dates
will be late in the first week of April,
with most cow-calf producers starting in mid- March. If I had to pick
a historical start date, it would be
March 15.
A review of the CHAPS (Cow
Herd Appraisal Performance System) data set of North Dakota Beef
Cattle Improvement Association
producers shows the actual 20-year
(1994 to 2013) average calving date
is April 4. The average date for fall
calf weigh-up is Oct. 12. These
dates have changed little, with no
strong trend showing any significant
change, indicating producer contentment with these traditional dates.
Producers calving outside of these
dates are rare. In fact, historically,
most have not even been interested
in discussing the topic. So why even
bring up the topic? We have three
reasons to discuss it: first, weather
effects on calf death loss; second, a
decreasing labor pool with the proper
cow-calf management skillset; and,
third, the growing expenses associated with cattle production.
The three reasons are not in order
of importance. Changing the calving
date is the most important decision a
cattle producer ever will make and
should not be made under duress or
out of frustration.
Historically, most beef producers
have been focused on the weather,
which generally involves a bad day
or two every year. The problem is
that every calving season will have
a day or two of bad weather. The
center has calved in almost every
month of the year through time and
has encountered weather challenges
every calving season.
So why the discussion? Simple:
escalating costs. The traditional
approach may be the most comfortable, but if production costs exceed
revenue, then the year’s effort is of
no avail. Crop producers have the
same concern; however, crop producers can change crops in an effort
to produce a crop with a value greater
than the expense.
Although that is not always easy,
the crop producers certainly explore
several options each growing season.
Beef producers generally have no
options to switch species, so change
within the beef enterprise is the main
option.
Previously, I have noted projected production costs of more than
$650 per calf, which is above the
speculated gross margin of $600,
thus the negative dollars. And beef
production in pounds of beef sold
seems fairly stable, which is another
not-so-good thing.
These are not good feelings,
especially if nothing changes, but
the challenge is doable. So the time
is now to think hard, to bring in
the nonconventional thoughts and
develop a plan.
Two things come to mind. First,
if costs go up, pounds need to go up,
too, which means keeping the calves
longer to add pounds without reinvesting more dollars. Second, overall costs of the operation need to be
pushed down. This does not mean
painting the gate a different color, but
changing the gate - in other words,
significant change.
The center was in that very situation and made a change. For years,
the center had a targeted calving start
date of March 15 and a bull turnout date around June 1. The average
calving date was March 29. After a
diligent discussion, the gates were
changed; the bullpen gate was locked
shut until Aug. 1.
The temptation to get a bolt cutter, open that gate and let those bulls
out was real. But we resisted.
The first change that occurred
at the center once bull turn-out was
delayed from June 1 to Aug. 1 was
the date that the cows start the third
trimester of pregnancy. As cows
advance in terms of days pregnant,
a significant change in nutritional
requirements occurs. When the cows
are exposed June 1, the third- trimester day is Dec. 12, while for the cows
exposed Aug. 1, the third-trimester
day is Feb. 12.
Delayed calving allows producers
to take a more aggressive approach
to late- season utilization of cover
crops, crop residue and other forage
sources, resulting in a one-third to
two-thirds reduction in winter feed
costs. Got your attention? More next
week.
May you find all your ear tags.

Part 2 of a two-part series...
March blizzard of 1966 known as ‘Blizzard of the Century’
By Janet Hansen
(Editor’s Note: This is
the second part of a two-part
series on the Blizzard of March
2-5, 1966 and the events which
occurred during that storm
in the Ransom County area.
The first section of the article appeared in the March 7
issue of the Ransom County
Gazette.)
The March 10 and 17, 1966
issues of the Ransom County
Gazette contained many stories
of human emergencies, adventures, and mishaps which had
occurred during the big blizzard.
Mrs. Arland Olson, who
lives on a farm six miles east
of Sheldon, had become very ill
and needed to get to the hospital in Lisbon. The Olson family and their neighbors, armed
with shovels, set out from the
Olson farm with three cars in
caravan style. When they found
they could not get through to
Highway 46, they resorted to
traveling on side roads. They
eventually got to Enderlin, but
had to double back to Sheldon,
where roads were blocked, the
entourage traveled through open
fields. After nearly seven hours
of travel through the blizzard,
they finally arrived at the Lisbon
hospital. Mrs. Olson’s condition the following morning, was
described as “improved.”
At the Lisbon Hospital, a
storm-cut staff pitched in with
extra hours and unfamiliar tasks
to care for a full to over-full
patient load. A staff of eight,
instead of the usual fifteen, cared
for over 20 patients for two days.
The dining room was turned
into a dormitory where the staff
members took turns getting a little rest. A nurse, Mrs. Levi Carlson of Nome, and Director of
Nursing Mrs. Kenneth Bachman
of Englevale, stayed from early
Wednesday to Sunday evening,
with only a few short periods of
rest during the night. On Friday
evening five employees stayed at
the hospital overnight, including
cooks Inga Nagel and Annie Olk
and nurses’ aides Faye Smith
and Gusta Evenson. Radiologist
Kay Foss stayed with RN Mrs.
Bill Kubas, who shuttled back
and forth between her home and
the hospital. Mrs. W. R. Pagel,
president of the Hospital Guild,
put in countless volunteer hours
working as a nurse’s aide.
Mrs. John McCann, who
became stranded while visiting
her mother in the hospital, rolled
up her sleeves and put in long
hours doing housekeeping and
laundry chores. Employees who
lived in the city were transported
to and from work in police vehicles and by Dick Armstrong’s
ambulance. Armstrong was kept
busy between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m.
Thursday morning taking several patients to the hospital. On
Sunday morning Armstrong met
a plane from Lucca at the airport. Orville Huseby had flown
baby DeLaine Huseby to Lisbon
for treatment at the hospital in a
plane equipped with skis.
The cleaning crew could not
get to work at the North Dakota
Veterans Home, but the cooks
stayed for the duration of the
storm, so all was well.
At Parkside Home, Mrs.
Grant Peterson worked well
over 40 hours and Mrs. Lorraine
Devitt worked over 30 hours
before going home to rest and
sleep. Mrs. Fritz Houge came to
work at the home early Friday
morning and stayed all day. Lee
Bratland came later in the day
and stayed all night. Mrs. Bill
Schuessler helped with supper
on Friday.
Approximately 25 to 30 men,
employees of the Melroe Mfg.
Co., Gwinner, mostly from out
of town, were marooned for 48
hours at the factory during the
blizzard. Al Holmstrom, one of
the foremen, made it to the store
for food and supplies and several Gwinner ladies made hot
dishes which were sent over to
the plant. The men were fed in
the lunchroom at the new office
building and the carpeted floor
in the conference room served
as sleeping quarters for the men
between work shifts.
Frank Hanson had reportedly
left his home on Thursday morning, March 4, while the storm
was still raging. He picked up
Dale Hanson to take him along
to go to his ranch 20 miles east
of Lisbon to look after his cattle.
They made it to Hanson’s ranch,
but could not return. They were
able to get some food from a
neighbor and stayed at the ranch.
On Saturday, after the storm
had subsided, Hanson’s pickup
was spotted by O.R. Ness as he
flew over the Hanson ranch in
his plane. A plow was sent out
to open the road late that afternoon. However, Frank and Dale
did not return until Sunday afternoon, after checking the cattle.
Martin Thompson was taken
to the hospital after having suffered a stroke at his home. It
took some snow shoveling for
the ambulance to reach him. He
was reportedly doing all right
after having arrived at the hospital.
Lisbon High School Band
Director Kenneth Enstad had
taken seven girls from the woodwind section of his Cadet Band
to Valley City on Wednesday
morning to attend a woodwind
clinic. Due to the storm, which
struck that afternoon, they could
not get home. Mr. Enstad managed to get the last three available rooms at the Rudolph Hotel.
The girls stayed at the hotel while
Mr. Enstad found housing for
himself at the college dorm. The
girls included: Janice Ulland,
LuJean Lyons, Marion Franson,
Bernice Hallquist, Doris Lund,
Leslie Larson and Nancy Dallas.
The group returned to Lisbon on
Sunday.
Van Lozier was the first to be
shoveled out on the north end of
town on Saturday. He, with the
help of Lorelei and Grover Orr,
shopped for needed groceries for
their less fortunate neighbors,
getting them enough food to last
until Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Berube
had left Lisbon just before the
storm hit to pick up a load of
machinery. They started home
on Friday, but only made it as
far as Wahpeton, when the roads
became impassible. They found
a motel and stayed in Wahpeton
until Sunday, when they completed the trip home to Lisbon.
A baby daughter was born
during the blizzard to Mr. and
Mrs. DuRayne Nelson at their
home near Wyndmere. After the
storm subsided, Mrs. Nelson
and the baby were taken to the
St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge. The baby was welcomed
by a brother, Jeffrey. Grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. Hjalmer
Nelson and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest
Kjar, all of McLeod.
Mrs. Russell Elijah and her
son, Bobby were stranded in
Canistota, SD, where Bobby was
taking treatments.
Mrs. Ida Jorstad had passed
away at her home on Monday
after a lingering illness. Due
to the storm, the funeral which
was to be held on Friday was
postponed and held Tuesday
afternoon at the Standing Rock
Church in Fort Ransom with
Pastor M.E. Arneson officiating.
Mrs. Larry (Ilene) Larson climbed a snowbank and
stepped down on her garage roof
and shoveled four feet of snow
off the building to keep the roof
from caving in. She stated that
the snow was touching the highline wires in their yard and that
it was not safe for her son, Brian,
to play outside due to the danger from the snowdrifts, which
resembled the rocks along the
Needles Highway in the Black
Hills.
Along the Valley Road there
were many people without telephone service. Machinery and
some of the buildings were covered by snowdrifts at the Archie
and Charles Jorgenson homes.
A few telephone poles stuck
out only about a foot above the
snow.
Wilbur Hansen had started
for work on Friday morning but
ended up in the ditch a couple
miles from home. He managed to walk back home, being
pushed by the wind.
The Harold Johnson family was blocked in by snow and
their gas supply was running
low. They reported having lost
a couple of head of livestock.
They told of running out of
butter, but Grandma Johnson
showed them how to make butter by shaking cream in a can.
The Johnson kids were anxious
to taste the buttermilk that their
father raved about. However,
when they tasted it, they questioned whether his taste buds
were working.
The Cass Clay milk truck
could not pick up the milk from
area farmers because the road
to Fargo was not opened until
Sunday morning and the country roads leading to the farms
were blocked with snow. Some
of the milk was dumped, while
some farmers scrounged around
for extra containers in which
to store the milk. Chet Larson
drove with the milk truck driver,
Gerald Sletmoe, on Monday
morning. Irene Hoenhause, writing in her news column in the
Gazette, reported that Sletmoe
had appeared in the valley, longbearded and looking tired after
only an hour’s sleep, on Monday morning. He took his relief
driver, Myles Hoenhause with
him, hoping to complete the
route by Tuesday morning.
It was reported that Verona
had been hit hard by the storm.
Mountains of drifts virtually
covered the town and everything
came to a standstill. There was
no equipment in town adequate
for moving the drifts, so the
county snowplows had to come
to the rescue. Dick Taylor’s
pickup was located in a drift
with four feet of snow over the
top of the cab. School busses
stopped on Main Street and the
students trudged to the school
from there. Cattle losses were
reported at the Art Dietrich and
R.D. Magill farms.
The Heisers, from north of
Verona, had gone to Fargo just
before the storm started. They
were accompanied by Mark
Laney, son of neighbors Mr.
and Mrs. Joe Laney, who had
an appointment with an orthodontist, and Mrs. Louis Christensen, the mother of six. As the
storm developed, Heiser called
the Laney farm to say they were
starting from Fargo. He asked if
Mr. Laney could go to his farm
and put the cattle in the barn for
him. Laney and a son went to
the Heiser farm, but were unable
to get back home. In the meantime, the Heiser’s car went into
the ditch. Aided by two young
men from Fargo, they managed
to reach home. With the storm
howling outside, Mrs. Laney
was alone with the rest of the
children. Louise Christensen
was babysitting with the Heisler
family. The young men from
Fargo were stranded, so came
home with the Heislers. Mr.
Laney and his son were also still
at the Heisers. After the storm
was over, someone remarked
that it was a good thing Mrs.
Heiser was used to a crowd (they
had nine children) because she
ended up cooking for 17 during
the storm’s duration.
It was reported that Lisbon
was without bus service or mail
from Wednesday, March 2 to
Monday, March 7. People were
reportedly very happy to see
the mail truck arrive that Monday and were seen carrying their
mail home by the armload.
It was estimated that 50 to 70
percent of the pheasant crop was
destroyed in the blizzard and the
partridge population was completely wiped out.
