your neighborhood and head
out together to find them. For
starters, add pine cones, acorns
or leaves of specific colors to
your list!
4. Learn about geocaching: Geocaching is a high-tech
scavenger hunt using a map
and a handheld GPS unit. It
can be a very educational and
fun way to spend the afternoon. For more information on
Geocaching visit http://www.
geocaching.com/.
5. Have a picnic: Pack a
cooler full of sandwiches,
drinks, snacks and plenty of
ice and take your lunch on the
road to the nearest park, field,
or even your backyard. Bring
some books and enjoy a quiet
story after you finish eating.
To ensure that your picnic is as
green as the grass you are sit-
ting on, visit my post here!
6. Visit a ‘pick-your-own’
produce farm: There are many
farms that allow you to ‘pickyour-own’ produce. This is a
great way to spend the afternoon with your child and teach
them about reducing their carbon footprint. When you get
home, have your children help
you wash and prepare the produce for your next meal. If you
don’t plan on using all your
produce right away, store it in
a Ziploc bag and place in the
freezer for future use.
If you would like to learn

eco-friendly
activities specifically on the
Red River, please visit River
Keepers Facebook page for
fun ideas to do you with your
friends and family and other
organized activities in the Red
River Basin.

April Showers bring May
Flowers: And the desire to be
outside.
After the long winter
months being cooped up inside
watching TV and playing video
games, we are all itching to be
outdoors. In early spring, we
get few spirts of warm weather
that doesn’t include mud, rain
and wind. While we wait for
temperatures to warm up so we
can hit the pools, lakes and do
other summer activities, there
are a lot of fun activities we
can do in the spring outside. If
you want to go a step further
you can add an eco-friendly
component to your outdoor
activities.

with hard, doughy kernels with drying leaves.
But there is more to the story than
forage quantity, and it is forage quality. Dumont oats averaged 14 percent
protein at heading, 11 percent protein
when cut with full milky kernels, 10.5
percent protein when cut with soft,
doughy kernels and 9 percent protein
when cut with hard, doughy kernels
and drying leaves.
In pounds of protein per acre,
cutting at heading produced 420
pounds. It increased to 506 pounds at
the milk stage and increased again to
630 pounds in the soft dough stage,
and decreased to 504 pounds when
the kernel was hard and the plant was
starting to dry down.

checkerboards across the agricultural
landscape. As you move from square
to square, a common question is:
“When should this field of hay be
harvested?” That question is becoming complicated as new annual hay
crops arrive on the scene and merge
with the traditional perennial grasses
and legumes.
Oats are a good crop to review the
general principles of when to harvest.
Pat Carr, former agronomist at the
NDSU Dickinson Research Extension Center, has some interesting, relevant data from many of our forage
crops and crops in general.
But let’s focus on oats. A while
back, a three-year study of Dumont
oats harvested at four different stages
demonstrated the impact of time
on quality and quantity. Dumont

Work zone safety important
for motorists as road construction
and maintenance work begins
Orange cones will once again
be lined along highways as construction season is underway
for 2016. The North Dakota
Department of Transportation
(NDDOT) announced another
large construction program today
with approximately $680 million
in projects being bid this year.
This year, the NDDOT along
with the North Dakota Highway
Patrol and the Associated General Contractors of North Dakota
(AGC of ND) are working
together to inform motorists the
importance of slowing down and
paying attention in work zones.
Maintenance and construction work zones are set up to
allow highway workers to complete major projects on highways
which adds economic benefits to
North Dakota. “When motorists
travel through a work zone there
is no room for error,” says Grant

Common symptoms of an allergy to pollen include:
• Sneezing
• Itching of the nose, eyes or roof of the mouth
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Watery, red or swollen eyes
Levi, NDDOT Director. “Last
year 155 crashes occurred in work
zones resulting in one fatality as
compared to 242 crashes and two
fatalities in work zones in 2014.
Drivers need to pay attention and
minimize distractions.”
“Please be alert when traveling through construction zones
and obey the posted speed limit.
These simple actions will ensure
safety for those working in these
areas along with motorists traveling through,” says Colonel
Michael Gerhart, NDHP superintendent.
When traveling through a
work zone, motorists should follow a few basic tips:
• Don’t speed. Obey posted
speed limits at all times, even
when workers aren’t present.
• Minimize distractions. Don’t
talk on your cell phone, change
the radio station or do anything
that takes your eyes off the road.
• Be patient. Work zones
aren’t present to inconvenience
drivers, they’re an important part
in maintaining and rebuilding our
state’s infrastructure.
• Stay alert. Dedicate your full
attention to the roadway.
The NDDOT works extensively with contractors from
all over the state and country to
ensure projects are carried out
successfully. Russ Hanson, Executive Vice President with the
Associated General Contractors
of North Dakota stresses to drivers the importance of obeying
construction signs as they are in
place to keep everyone safe. “The
contractors and construction
crews work right alongside the
roadway with traffic to improve
our transportation system. Please
slow down and give them room
to work,” says Hanson.
Motorists can stay up to date
on construction projects in several ways:
• Travel Information Map at
www.dot.nd.gov
• Call 511
• NDRoads smartphone app
• Subscribing to work zone

To keep your seasonal allergies under control:
• On high pollen days stay inside, close your windows
and reduce your exposure.
• Use your air conditioning in your house and car.
• If a high pollen count is forecasted, start taking your medication
before your symptoms start.
Will Be In
Lisbon
Some allergies are manageable with home remedies. For example,
sinus congestion and symptoms of allergy to pollen can be treated
with nasal irrigation.
Many over the counter medications work well to help people who
suffer from allergies. Antihistamines are used to calm or stop symptoms
while decongestants are used to treat stuffiness and other symptoms
linked to colds and allergies.
Your local Thrifty White Pharmacist
can help you find the allergy
medications that are best for you.

“Ron is my hero”...
Leading by example
and for love of country
Ronald “Ron” Sveum, Jr., McLeod, started his basic
training at the age of 17 in Texas. While in the Army,
he was stationed in the
United States as well
as Germany. He then
joined the North Dakota
National Guard, where
he served with his unit,
performing many flood
duties and providing
homeland security. He
was also deployed to
Afghanistan, for which
he was awarded a
Bronze Star.
Before leaving for Afghanistan, Ron told his
wife, Karla, that he was
Ronald ‘Ron’ Sveum, Jr.
going overseas in the
hope that their children
would never have to.
Ron retired as Command Sergeant Major in 2009,
after 21 years of service with the U.S. Army and ND
National Guard.
“Ron is my hero,” states his wife, “because he has truly taught me the meaning of trust in your fellow soldiers,
or, as I look at it . . . family and friends in general. He
has also taught me about leadership - lead by example
and don’t ask more out of your soldiers than what you
are willing to step up and do yourself. In addition, he has
taught me about commitment - always give 100 percent,
no matter how menial the task may seem. Through his
service he has also taught me about sacrifice - sometimes
you need to leave the love and comfort of your home to
fight for what is right. Finally, he has taught me about
love for our country. These are all traits I’m proud to see
him pass on to our children.”
For the Memorial Day Issue,
May 30th, 2016, we would like to

tribute to a Hero, past or present.
You may submit a photo and short

Take your taste buds
on a tropical fruit trip
“Try this miracle fruit,” our
tour leader said as he plucked a
few red berries from a shrublike
plant in Costa Rica and began
peeling the outer skin.
I watched carefully as he
peeled the small red berry to reveal
a white inner seed. We all began
swirling the seeds in our mouths
like cough drops.
“When you taste this lime, it
will taste sweet,” he added. I was
skeptical but feeling adventuresome. Maybe the altitude was
affecting my reasoning ability.
The seed really didn’t taste like
anything. However, when I tasted
the lime, the typically mouthpuckering fruit was as sweet as
candy.
I decided I would do some
investigation about what causes
this change. The miracle fruit
(that’s really its name) affects
our taste buds and perception of
sweet and sour because it contains
a “glycoprotein” (sugar-protein).
The glycoprotein does not change
the acidity of the food.
Miracle fruit was just one of
the many tropical fruits I tried. In
fact, I really had not thought too
much about the origin of some of
the fruits that we can buy at times
in our local grocery stores.
Costa Rica produces a wide
range of fruits, including bananas,
mangos, pineapples and papaya.
We were served plates of tropical
fruit or glasses of fresh-squeezed
fruit juice at almost every meal,
along with plenty of beans and
rice.
I really never had thought
about what type of shrub or tree
produces some of these fruits, so
that was eye-opening. Some of
these fruits grow on bushes, close
to the ground, while others grew
high in the trees.
I admit I wasn’t sure where to
look when someone said, “Look at
all the mangos!” They were high in
a tree above a house. I also noted
that tropical houseplants such as
the foot-tall ones I have at home
towered over my head when they
were in their natural element in
Costa Rica. Amaryllis plants grew
like wild plants on the slopes of
hills.
Here’s a little quiz. Name the
fruit that I am describing with the
clues listed below. These are all
available in Midwestern grocery
stores.
Question 1. This popular fruit
grows on a tall tree. Each fruit is
considered a “finger,” and a group
of the fruits is called a “hand.”
They are inexpensive and readily
available. The creamy white interior is rich in potassium, which we
need for muscle contraction and
nerve impulses. It provides complex carbohydrates and serves as
a quick source of fuel in its own
biodegradable yellow wrapper. If
you have a pet monkey, you might
want to watch these fruits closely.
What is it?
Question 2. This fruit is similar in appearance but is less sweet
than its “cousin” described in
Question 1. It is starchy, with a
neutral taste similar to a potato. It
often is served with a sweet glaze.
What is it?
Question 3. This fruit has sweet
and sour flavors and is greenishyellow, usually with five distinctive ridges. It can be eaten raw or
used in cooking. When you slice it
open, its shape may remind you of
the nighttime sky. What is it?
Question 4. This tropical fruit
grows on trees up to 130 feet tall.
It is oval to round, with a smooth
outer skin that ripens from green
to golden yellow to red, depending
on the type. It is a good source of
vitamins A and C, potassium, and
several other vitamins and minerals. (Hint: I mentioned it earlier.)
What is it?
Question 5. This fruit grows
on waxy, long leaves, sometimes
fairly close to the ground. If you
add this raw fruit to Jello, the natural enzyme bromelain will cause
the gelatin to become watery. Use
the canned chunks or tidbits in gelatin salads. This fruit is an excellent source of vitamins C and A,
along with minerals. What is it?
How did you do? The answers
are 1. banana; 2. plantain; 3. star
fruit or carambola; 4. mango; 5.
pineapple.
We also learned about guava,
nanzi, guava or “cas,” anona, guanabana, papaya and several other
fruits I never had encountered.
One smelled like rotten cheese, so
I politely declined the opportunity
to taste it after seeing the scowling
faces of those who took a bite.
We all have our own “local
foods,” depending on the climate
and growing season. We grow
many fruits and vegetables in our
area, but we also import many,
which adds variety to all of our
diets. Fruits and vegetables of all
types have many health benefits.
We all should aim to fill half of
our plates with fruits and vegetables, according to current dietary
guidelines. Adults, on average,
should aim to consume at least 4
1/2 cups of fruits and vegetables
every day. Eating plenty of fruits
and vegetables, along with other
healthful foods, may help prevent
cancer, heart disease and other
chronic diseases.
Because gardening season is
close at hand, visit https://www.
ag.ndsu.edu/fieldtofork to learn
more about growing, preparing
and preserving many fruits and
vegetables that grow well in our
area. To add a little variety, pick up
an unfamiliar fruit now and then at
the supermarket.
Here’s a tasty dip that goes well
with a variety of fruit. You can use
any type of sour cream or yogurt;
the nutritional analysis is based on
lower-fat, lower- calories types.
Tropical Fruit Dip
2 c. sour cream, reduced-fat
1 (8-ounce) container low-fat
yogurt (vanilla or your favorite
fruit flavor)
4 Tbsp. vanilla instant pudding
(about half of a 3 1/2-ounce package)
Combine all ingredients in a
medium-sized mixing bowl. Mix
thoroughly and chill. Makes 12
servings, about 1/4 cup each. Each
serving has 90 calories, 5 g (grams)
fat, 3 g protein, 8 g carbohydrate, 0
g fiber and 105 milligrams sodium.
Producers welcomed spring
snow and rain this week in preparation for maintaining or even
increasing cattle inventory for the
coming year.
The extra heifers may find
some good pasture this summer
and, we hope, turn up pregnant
this fall.
The moisture impacts land
use, which is a serious topic and
central to the future for beef production management options.
Input for land use management
options often is followed by discussion, decision and implementation because land is used for
direct grazing or the production
of feed.
At the North Dakota State
University Dickinson Research
Extension Center (DREC), the
issue of how to integrate crop,
forage and grass production to
meet the needs of the cow herd is
the focus of current discussions.
How much grass is available?
How many cows can the ranch
run? Can traditional cropping systems feed cows?
The focus of the center’s
efforts involves the integration of
forage production and the various opportunities to harvest that
forage by mechanical or living
means. Doug Landblom, DREC
animal scientist, said several
approaches have been utilized to
explore the opportunity of integrating crops and livestock.
These efforts at the integration
of crops and livestock include
the traditional option of feeding
hay and supplement in confined
paddocks following summer and
aftermath grazing, but that is not
the only option. More recently,
pasturing cattle well past traditional aftermath grazing in the
fall certainly has expanded the
center’s insight into cattle production.
Cows in confinement and
utilizing a sequence of forages
by grazing cover crop mixtures,
followed by corn and sunflower
residues, or grazing stockpiled
crested wheat, brome grass and
other mixed plant types, followed
by corn residue, offer expanded
opportunities to cattle producers.
The longer the cows can be the
living harvesters, the less need for
mechanical intervention.
What does this mean? The
cows are doing the work, so we
can delay the feeding of mechanically harvested feedstuffs and
spend less on labor. Additionally, calves and yearlings are harvesting warm- and cool-season
annuals after early grazing of
cool-season grasses and summer
grazing of native grass.
This yearlong, thorough integration of multiple forages with
several types of cattle certainly
challenges traditional thinking. Cattle are no longer simple
users of pasture; they have been
promoted to be the primary harvesters within the pasture and
cropping systems. This research
at the center has producers sitting
on the edge of their chair, waiting
for the preliminary stocking rate
estimates of the various forages.
Sound science is the basis of
the estimates, but regardless of
how sound the science is, this
integration has many unknowns.
In the end, each eco-site, or one
could say soil type, has only so
much capacity to produce vegetation. The vegetation (which producers call forage) needs timely
precipitation. Not all the production is available for consumption
and, depending on past usage, not
all the production has the same
value.
The center’s research is
actively challenging the land base
to produce more beef through
implemented forage grazing
systems that place all cattle on
pastures, on fields, on crops, on
residues and only occasionally
in dry lots. However, discussions
will follow. Additional input will
be obtained and decisions will
be made to get a handle on cattle
costs, which means an inventory of all the ranch’s base units,
including grass, crop and forage
acres.

In closing, the beef business is
an affair with the land. Producer
success is a function of the ability to utilize an allotted piece of
ground through some combination of plant and animal outputs.
At the center, plant plus animal
(not plant vs. animal) is explored
annually. Perhaps this is how the
term “ranch vs. farm” originated.
The farm was heavily dependent
on plants and the ranch more
dependent on animals. In the past,
however, neither was exclusively
plant or animal.
Today, producers slowly are
moving toward specialization. In
a broad sense, spring produces
cool-season
plants,
summer
grows warm-season plants and
fall blooms cool-season plants.
These plants could be perennials,
biannual or annuals.
A successful land-based operation in the future must review all
land-based production potential
through grain, forage and animal production, including input
costs and income. Given the current rains in southwestern North
Dakota, the center once again will
ponder the use of all potentially
bountiful plant resources from the
land, and so should producers.

North Dakota resident tests positive for Zika virus
The North Dakota Department of
Health (NDDoH) recently received
confirmation from the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) that a woman who traveled
to Puerto Rico while pregnant has
tested positive for Zika virus. While
Zika is associated with microcephaly
and other birth defects, none have
been identified in the infant. As a
precaution, the NDDoH plans to
monitor the infant for a year. The
woman is the first North Dakota resident to test positive for Zika.
“Pregnant women should not
travel to countries with Zika transmission, and if they must travel, be
extremely careful to avoid mosquito
bites. The CDC recently announced
that Zika virus infection during pregnancy is a cause of microcephaly and
other severe fetal brain defects in
infants. Couples trying or planning to
become pregnant should to talk with
their health care provider about their
travel plans,” said Laura Cronquist,
epidemiologist with the NDDoH.
Zika virus is spread primarily
through the bite of an Aedes species
mosquito. It can be passed from an
infected mother to her fetus. In addition, the virus can be transmitted sexually from a man to his sex partners.
To prevent the spread of Zika to sex
partners, the NDDoH recommends
the following:
Men returning from Zika affected
areas who have a sexual partner that
is pregnant should either abstain
from sexual activity or correctly
and consistently use condoms for all
sexual contact for the duration of the

“The mosquitoes in North
Dakota do not spread Zika virus, so
our prevention efforts are focused
on raising awareness about the risk
of travel-associated and sexually
transmitted Zika virus infections,”
said Laura Cronquist, epidemiologist
with the NDDoH.
Many diseases, including Zika,
dengue fever and yellow fever, can
be transmitted by mosquitoes. All
travelers should protect themselves
from mosquito bites in the same way
they would at home, and by following the recommendations at www.
cdc.gov/zika/prevention.
After returning from Zika
affected areas, the NDDoH has the
following additional recommendations:
Pregnant women should consult
their health care provider and seek
testing for Zika virus between two
and 12 weeks after returning from a
Zika affected area
All travelers should consult their
health care provider if they develop
illness, such as sudden onset of fever,
rash, conjunctivitis (red eyes), joint
pain, muscle soreness or pain, or
headache, within 14 days of returning from Zika affected areas
Avoid getting additional bites
from other mosquitos during the first
week of illness to help spread transmission
Even if they do not feel sick,
travelers returning to the United
States from an area with Zika
should take steps to prevent mos-
quito bites for three weeks following their return
More information regarding
Zika virus, including an up-to-date
list of destinations with confirmed
Zika transmission, can be found

So Much So Close!
In Celebration of National Hospital Week we take this
time to recognize the importance that there is
So Much So Close right in Lisbon.
Keith and Brenda Dick sat down to talk about their
perspective on CHI Lisbon Health and to share their
reasons of the importance of it being in our small town of
Lisbon. It was asked of them what they would do if the
hospital weren’t here. They both stated, “We don’t know
what we would have done the many times that we needed
to be seen there for different things”. We believe in our
hospital and its educated staff, the things that they can do
there from blood transfusions, outpatient medication injections, colonoscopies, to mammograms.
Brenda who was a nurse for twenty plus
years shared, “Once when Keith
was experiencing some arm
pain and weakness, it was
discovered his heart was
not working at capacity. After running
tests and spending the
night, he returned a
few days later for a
Cardiolyte Stress Test
and that report came
back abnormal. He was
glad that he was able to get
to have a Cardiolyte done so
quickly here instead of waiting
for an opening elsewhere. He ended
up having open heart
surgery shortly thereafter. Once he returned home
he followed up with our Cardiac Rehab Program. He
attended classes for 6 weeks right here at the hospital in
Lisbon. He shared, “If I would have had to drive to Fargo
for this I would not have done it. For one, thing the drive
would have been too hard on me and the travel time driving 2 to 3 times a week would not have worked well for me.”
At the end of the six week program CHI Lisbon Health
even had a graduation day for him for successfully
completing the program.
Again not too many years later Keith became very sick and
needed the attention of the
Emergency Room. He had
been experiencing
abdominal pain, diarrhea
and blood loss. While there
Keith received a blood
transfusion due to the large
...with Keith and Brenda Dick
blood loss. He was stabilized and then transferred out to a
larger
facility. The Dicks’ said this is why we need this hospital
and thank goodness for the great work done by the
physician and nursing staff. Without coming here first they
were not sure what would have happened. He eventually
was then transferred to Rochester where he underwent
surgery. He was diagnosed with Carcinoid Cancer, a slow
moving cancer, but found in multiple areas of the body.
One was his gastrointestinal track. The surgery that he
had was a resection which removed some of the tumors.
The ones that Keith has still are being treated by biological
therapy, also called immunotherapy, which involves
using the body’s own immune system to
fight the cancer tumors and slow the
growth of the metastatic tumors
to prolong the survival rate.
Keith and Brenda both
stated that this has been
working very well for
him. CHI Lisbon
Health is able
to provide the
medication needed for
his injections instead of
traveling to Fargo.
Keith and Brenda are very
thankful for our small town
hospital. The Dicks’ like to be
where you are familiar with the staff
and that CHI Lisbon Health is there when
you have that emergency or for regular treatment.
They went on to state once again of the need to have a facility like CHI Lisbon Health in this community. They hope
that everyone in
Lisbon and the surrounding areas, help support CHI
Lisbon Health to maintain quality health care in our
community. If the Dicks’ have had a concern with anything
at the facility the staff have always been able to calm their
fears, and answer all questions quickly. They have always
asked and the staff have been very good about getting back
to them to talk about the concerns that they had.
At CHI Lisbon Health we
want to make sure that your
experience here is the best
experience. We are
ALWAYS striving to provide
you with the EXCELLENT
care you deserve.
