Wine Words
Ohio produces wines from many different kinds of grapes
under our ‘cool climate’ conditions. This means our reds
tend to be lighter and our whites more aromatic with fruit
forward. They fall into three basic families:
Vitis vinifera: grown extensively in every wineproducing region in the world
 French-American hybrids: originally developed
in Europe but also widely planted in the eastern
United States
 Vitis labrusca: native to North America and noted
for ‘grapey’ characteristics

Seyval Grapes
French American varieties
Seyval Blanc – white – with chardonnay parentage – dry,
usually with some oak
Traminette – white – with gewürztraminer parentage, off
dry, light and spicy
Vidal Blanc – white – light, off dry, very fruity and
aromatic, also used for ice wines
Vignoles – white – versatile, from dry to sweet, light and
fruity
Chambourcin – red – most common red hybrid, light, dry,
cherry and black currant nose, good introductory red
Pinot Noir Grapes
Our most common winegrapes with very abbreviated
descriptors:
Vitis vinifera - European style varieties
Chardonnay – white – rich, complex, oaky, dry, the ‘Queen’
of white wine varieties
Gewürztraminer – white – spicy, off dry, intense floral
aromas
Pinot Gris – white – dry to off dry [grigio style], crisp,
subtle fruit aromas
Riesling – white – off dry to dry, fruity, crisp, fresh with
nose ranges from melons to citrus
Cabernet Franc – red – dry as light red, sometimes an off
dry blush, soft and spicy undertones
Cabernet Sauvignon – red – always dry, bold, complex,
depth from tannins, oak and intense fruit flavors
Merlot – red – light, dry, more fruit up front, an
approachable red for beginners
Pinot Noir – red – dry but lighter bodied, aromas of cherry
and smoke
Ohio Wine Producers Association
Concord Vineyard in the Spring
Vitis labrusca - Native American varieties
Niagara – white – aromatic, sweet and intense flavors
Delaware – white – less intense labrusca, often used as a
base for sparklers
Catawba – white or pink – historic grape that was once
the foundation of the industry – still one of the most
popular of all the sweet wines sold
Concord – red – another foundation grape, rich sweet,
jammy grape flavors
