Borrow from all BC public libraries
Your library card lets you borrow materials from
any public library in the province with a BC
OneCard. Find out how to get a BC OneCard at

Guide to your Library
Use your free library card at any of our 39 library
branches and browse our collection, explore our
eLibrary or access our online catalogue to find and
request materials.
How long you can borrow materials
• Standard loan period – 3 weeks (21 days)
• CDs – 3 weeks (21 days)
• DVDs – 1 week (7 days)
• Book Club sets – 6 weeks (42 days)
• High Demand items – 1 or 2 weeks
(7 or 14 days)
• Express Reads – 1 week (7 days)
• eBooks/eAudiobooks – 3 weeks
(21 days)
Special loan periods are provided for Homebound
customers and registered audiobook print-disabled
customers.
Special loan periods are also provided for customers
who qualify for our Books by Mail service.
Renewals
You may renew materials twice – online, by phone or
in person. If someone else has requested an item, you
will not be able to renew.
How to renew materials
• Online – Connect to My VIRL at
www.virl.bc.ca.
• By Phone – Call 1.888.988.8475 within our
service area. You will need your 14-digit Library
Card, 4-digit PIN and library barcodes of the
items you wish to renew.
• Self Checkout – Use Express Checkout
available at most branches.

reminder sent 3 days before an item is due.
• Overdue notice – Emails are sent 1, 7, 21, and
35 day(s) after your item was due.
Phone notifications
You can receive telephone notifications if your number
is listed within our service area. We will call you when:
• Requests are available for pickup.
• An item is overdue 2, 10, 18 day(s) after the item
was due.
Overdue fees and charges
Late charges are assessed if you return your materials
after the due date. There is a maximum fine of $10 per
item.
