Two Past Members Were Found ~ Help Us Find More
To Be Held February 5-7 at the Embassy Suites Hotel
To keep in touch, we recently
contacted one of our past members
requesting an update on what he has done
since leaving the MACS. Do you
remember the “Watergate Hat Man?
Well that was Ronnie Winfield, who
became a member of the Men’s Apparel
Club of the Carolinas, Inc. in the 70’s.
He was a hat salesman (obviously)
who was given the “Watergate” moniker
in his early days, while he worked for
Kangol Headwear.
Ronnie was a very likeable person,
always dressed perfectly, and always
wore a hat, whether a Western style or
your regular felt hat. He always felt that
if you sell it, you should wear it.
Maybe some people should take a
lesson from Ronnie when it comes to
dress habits.
Ronnie believed in being involved,
because he would become a member of
the Board of Directors of the Carolinas
MACs and served in 1981 and 1982. He
was a caring MAC member who firmly
believed in involvement with the
association. Back in those early days
The Fall 2011 Southern Clothing
Market will be held February the 5th,
6th and the 7th at the Embassy Suites
Hotel, located at 4800 South Tryon
Street at Woodlawn (Billy Graham
Parkway) in South Charlotte, North
Carolina. From I-77, exit at 6 B and
you will see the Embassy on the corner.
This begins our 22nd year at the
beautiful Embassy Suites Hotel. We
think most of you will agree this is the
perfect place for our market. The hotel
always does such a great job for the
exhibitors and retailers. Thanks to the
Embassy and their staff for all of their
hard work to make our stay so
enjoyable.
The market will officially open on
Saturday February 5th at 9:00 AM and
close at 6:00 PM. For the retailer who
would like to work earlier or later, the
salesmen are always glad to
accommodate you. Remember, the
registration office in Suite 706, is open
on Friday, February 4th for your
convenience. Some of our salesmen get
early starts on Friday, and even
Thursday. Since this is an appointment
there were lots of members who cared
about the organization, and were involved.
Ronnie is still active in politics, as he
currently serves as President of the MidAtlantic Men’s and Boys Apparel Club, and
I think he is into his 2nd term. He is
working Hatco, Stetson and Dobbs Hats
and travels North Carolina, Virginia,
Washington DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania,
Delaware and New Jersey and resides in
Gaithersburg, Maryland.
The second past member that we
spoke with was Fred Bright. Fred served
on the Board of Directors as Treasurer in
1977-1978. Fred was a shoe salesman,
who went on to become Sales Manager
of a large company. He moved around a
bit and then when he became a retired
citizen, he moved back to Charlotte. After
some six months of retirement, he decided
that was not for him. He again became a
salesman and contacted the MAC office
about coming to the February Southern
Clothing Market. He will definitely be an
asset to the organization. We hope he does
come back.
market, a number of salesmen check in
on Thursday so they can work with those
retailers who have stores close to
Charlotte and the surrounding area.
On Sunday, we again are fortunate
to have the “Big Game” on. We will be
hosting the Super Bowl XLV game on
Sunday evening, starting at 6:00 PM.
And, of course we will have for your
viewing pleasure, a big screen TV. As
usual there will be great food, and drinks
to go along with the festivities. The
complimentary bar is open from 6:00
until 8:00, with a cash bar beginning at
8:00 PM. It should be a blast!
On Monday the market opens at
9:00 and closes at 6:00 PM.
On Saturday, Sunday and Monday,
we will be serving lunch in the atrium
(ground level) for our salesmen and
retailers, from 12:00 until 2:00 PM.
Retailers, don’t forget to pick up your
lunch tickets in Suite 706 when you
register.
Again, we ask for your cooperation
in not bringing children under the age of
12-years. Thank you for your
cooperation.

It’s always nice to keep in touch with
former members of the Men’s Apparel
Club. If you know the whereabouts of
any former member who has been gone
20 years or more, please contact Larry
Holland or Dianne Norton so we can print
an update on them.
The Embassy Suites Hotel is such a pleasant place for the Southern Clothing
Market. It’s like being at home. We applaud them for their genuine service and
extra special treatment.

President’s Message
Dear Mr. Retailer,
Welcome to the Fall 2011 Southern Clothing Market. I
want to say it is always good to see you here in Charlotte and we
look forward to making your trip a pleasant and successful one.
It appears that this economy is starting to show signs of
life and in talking to my retailers, Christmas Season and the
Holidays were better than last year, which is encouraging. We
are anticipating a much more productive market in February.
We hope your experience here at the show will be a positive
one, and if there is anything we can do to make your visit better,
please do not hesitate to let us know.
In addition, we have plans in place for the upcoming show
for a raffle to benefit St. Judes Hospital. We hope you will
participate for this needy cause.
Good selling and safe travels!!
Sincerely,
Gary O’Malley

E DDIE C RABTREE - O N THE
MEND - Eddie Crabtree stays in
touch with the MAC office, keeping
us updated on his health. He
recently experienced some serious
health problems and had a stay in
the hospital (problems generated
by dehydration).
Eddie recently had to undergo
about 10 weeks of rehabilitation. He
is out of the hospital and doing
much better.
Even thought Eddie had been
plagued with a knee problem, he has
been able to go to a few football
games. I’m sure he was attending
the East Carolina University games,
which is his favorite. ~
NORWOOD LEE PIRKEY, SR - Son
of John Fredrick and Elizabeth
Alcocke Pirkey, died October 26,
2010. Native of Nash County,
combat veteran of WWII of the
101st Airborne and lifelong
business man, Norwood was
predeceased by his wife, Lynda
Viverette Pirkey and his son, John
Fredrick, II. Of him “this is what’s
left; former wife, Frances Pirkey
Wilson; four children: Elizabeth
Pirkey of Dallas, TX, Norwood Lee,
Jr. of Memphis, TN, Michael and
Susan Pirkey of Wilmington, NC and
Douglas and Joie Pirkey of Little
Chute, WI; seven grandchildren:
Liza, Jacob, Paige, Zebulun, Sophie,
Elias, and Thomas; and two great
grandchildren: Caedin and Patrick.
And lastly his dog; Taylor, his
beloved “Sheltie.”
As an alumnus of Georgia’s
Riverside Military Academy,
Virginia’s Smithdeal-Massey
Business College and Duke
University, Norwood was a
consummate
businessman.
Spanning five decades beginning
with dry goods wholesale; the NorLee Company, and culminating as
an apparel manufacturers’
representative, he was held in the
highest regard by competitor and
customer alike. A member of the
Men’s Apparel Club of the
Carolinas for twenty-five years, he
served as board member, president,
and chairman. His tenure is
testament to the respect and
confidence he engendered among
his peers. Finding retirement
unacceptable, he--in his own
words--”refired” and worked for
several years in the men’s
department of JC Penney.
A follower of Jesus, Norwood
served as volunteer with Hospice,
Nash General Day Hospital, and
Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Catholic Church. To many he
ministered the companion and
lordship of Christ.
Norwood Pirkey will be
especially remembered for his
gentlemanly demeanor and
endearing
and
charming
personality. A man who never met
a stranger, he was always willing
to speak and interact with people
he encountered along his way. He
would weave a tale better than
anyone, captivating his audience
with his clever wit. Many of his
stories, or “slices of life,” were
peppered with signature remarks
like “getting old is not the best
arrangement.” Norwood and his
words of wisdom will linger long in
our memory and forever in our
hearts.
Family, friends and his dog
Taylor will miss him sorely.

JOURNAL - North Myrtle Beach, SC
- William McKinley “Bill” Wallace,
Jr, 83, husband of Lucy French
Wallace for 63 years, died Sunday,
January 30, 2011, at NHC Healthcare
in Murrells Inlet, SC.
Mr. Wallace was born January
30, 1927 in East Rockingham, a son
of the late William McKinley Sr. and
Lillie Edwards Wallace.
Mr. Wallace was the owner of
B. Wallace & Company of Myrtle
Beach and the Grand Strand and
formerly owned Bill Wallace, Inc. in
Rockingham. He was affectionately
knows as “Bill Jr.” and “Daddy Bill.”
Survivors including his wife
are three sons, William Edwards
Blain-Wallace of Lewiston, Maine,
Cameron McCrea Wallace of
Charlotte and Hugh Jefferson
Wallace of Surfside Beach, SC; one
daughter, Lucy Wallace Oakes of
N. Myrtle Beach, SC; ten
grandchildren, and six greatchildren.
Larry D. Holland, MAC
Executive Director stated, “Bill
Wallace was a ‘no nonsense’ type
person, with a booming voice. He
attended the apparel markets in
Charlotte for many years. He
always had something funny to tell
you, and he was a jokester. You
could not always tell if he was
serious or just joking. I had the
pleasure of visiting several of his
stores in the Myrtle Beach area, and
doing interviews for the “Rags to

MAURICE GOLDSTEIN PASSES
AWAY -On December 15, 2010.
Maurice Goldstein
of Boca Raton,
Florida passed
away after a battle
with pancreatic
cancer. He was the
beloved husband of the late Sylvia
Helen Peltz Golsdstein; devoted
father of Burton Goldstein and
Maxine Goldstein. Also, survived
by four loving grandchildren,
Jeffrey, Neal, Heather and Tiffany,
and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on
Sunday December 19th, 2010 at
Washington Hebrew Congregation
in Washington, DC. Interment
followed at King David Memorial
Garden, Falls Church, VA. Family
received friends immediately
following interment at the
Lakelands Community Clubhouse
in Gaithersburg, MD. Memorials
may be made to the charity of your
choice.
Maurice “Waxy” Goldstein
became a member of the Men’s
Apparel Club of the Carolinas, Inc.
in November 1968 and remained as
a dedicated MACS until the 90’s.
He traveled the Southeast as a shoe
salesman. He also owned retail
shoe stores in the north. Waxy was
always the “Dapper Dan,” dressed
to the hilt, and was known to some
as “The Colonel.” I believe that title
came from his hair and beard. Larry
D. Holland stated, “I miss him even
today, as he was always at the market
when the doors were opened.
Usually one of the first each morning
to enter the market.”
We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to our “Care” section of the Rags to Riches. This has helped keep
all of our retailers and members aware of the concerns . Please continue to contact us with news you would like to share.

Send messages of encouragement to Butch and his wife Vicki. They would love to
hear from you. http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/butchstone
Butch Stone
A member of the Poor Souls
Singing Group performed for the
MACS at many of our events.
“Butch recently went through
a bone marrow transplant, and is
struggling from day to day, but is
slowly progressing. He was very
lucky to find a donor several
months ago. The following is a
typical day in the life of Butch
Stone, provided to us through his
Caringbridge Website.”
BUTCH - Vicki was so right in
her last journal when she said that
our “normal” routine is kind of
boring. The reality of recovery from
a bone marrow transplant is it takes
lots and lots of “time.” Besides the
obvious of taking your medications
regularly, getting plenty of rest and
exercise, staying away from total
healing of your body and building
of a brand new immune system is
just plain old time, waiting it out.
Days and weeks slowly drag by and
you may not see any improvement.
And some days you feel that you
may actually be getting worse.
Recovery is definitely one small
baby step at a time, one small
victory so minute that you may even
fail to realize it. You have to accept
the fact that this is just the way it is
and that God, along with your
body, is running the show and you
are on His time. It gets difficult
sometimes because I am so ready
to get back into living my life. I
know it will happen and I know God
is giving me an advanced course
on patience, faith and obedience.
I am very, very thankful that I
was able to have this procedure
and realize that it more than
probably has saved my life. I am
so thankful that I was led to Duke
University Medical and specifically
to the team of incredible doctors,
nurses, PAs, etc. that took such
good care of me. I am also thankful
that I was provided the means to
have such a major procedure and
most of all that I have such a
wonderful wife that has stood by
me (and still does) throughout this
entire ordeal. I have been truly
blessed more than I can even
believe and I wonder what I ever
did to deserve it. I truly believe
that this is part of God’s plan for me
and that He must have something
else in store for my life. I just have
to be patient and wait this thing out
until full recovery is accomplished.
I have faith that it will if I just keep
doing the right things and believe.
The major set back to my
recovery now is still the GvH
disease; however, in the past few
days there are definite signs that
it is slowly getting better. I feel
that the GvH is inhibiting my
white blood cell production and
suppressing my appetite. I think
that once the GvH is gone, my
recovery
will
accelerate
significantly. Hope so anyway!
Well, I hope our journals are
not getting too boring, but there is
just not a lot to report at this time.
It is just a matter of hoping, praying
and waiting. One exciting thing to
report is that I believe the new Poor
Souls CD should be released within
a couple of weeks. I’ll keep you
posted. Thank you all again for all
your messages, cards, emails, and
of course all your prayers. I know
for a fact they have played a major
role in my success thus far.
Much love to you all, Butch
After the death of Bobby Smith in 2009,
Butch Stone and Roger Smith are
carrying on the great Poor Souls name
and tradition.
“We know we cannot forget the past,
but also we know that the show must
go on! You ain’t seen nothing yet!”
The Poor Souls have been in the studio
for much of 2010 working on new
material to be released soon! It’s
almost here!!! Please stay tuned to
thepoorsouls.net for updated
information regarding the upcoming
CD release.
“This new release will be history
making for the Poor Souls. We can’t
give you all the details right now, but
you will be amazed at what we are
putting together for you!! Be prepared
to be surprised and shine up your
shagging shoes!”

Making the Skies a Bit Friendlier
by Mitch Albom, Published in the Charlotte Observer, February 13, 2011
“No Rowdy kids, no bare feet, no smelly food. That’s all I ask.”
H
And if you fall asleep, try not
to do so on the person next to
you.
So there you go. With a little
cooperation, we can all have a
better year as passengers, even
if the airlines think we’re cattle.
Thank you for your attention.
And now, as the captain says, “sit
back, relax, and strip to your
underwear.”
ELLO, THIS IS YOUR
captain speaking.
Okay, I lied. I don’t sit
in the cockpit. I sit where you
sit. And I fly a lot (over 100,000
miles a year). So I would like to
suggest ways the airlines could
treat us better this year.
But why bother?
Any business that will soon
be charging you and me to open
the bathroom door isn’t keen on
hearing from either of us. The
airlines stopped listening about
the time they began selling
pillows.
So perhaps we could speak
to one another as fellow
travelers. Because even if the
airlines torture us until we’d
rather ride on the back of a filthy
hay wagon, we don’t have to
follow suite, do we?
Here are a few gentle
suggestions:
First, when you get on the
plane, walk down the aisle with
your carry-on luggage in front
of you, not behind you. Behind
you, you knock over drinks,
bags, and small elderly people.
And when you finally sit
down, think before you slam
your seat back into the person
behind you. Breaking kneecaps
is for gangster movies.
Feet. As in bare feet. Don’t
do it. Maybe at home you like to
rip off your socks and plant your
naked toes wherever you like, but
not on a plane, Okay? This isn’t

a nail salon. I recently sat next to
a woman who stuck her bare,
sweaty feet on the cabin wall!
Please. Unless you’re SpiderMan and about to walk upside
down, keep the shoes on, all
right? It’s smelly enough in the
cabin.
Which brings us to food. Yes,
I know you’re lucky to get a
Cornflake on an airplane today,
but if you must bring food on
board, consider the odor. Fried
onions will not stop smelling at
23D.
Kids. Let’s talk about kids.
Kids love airplanes. Many can’t
believe they have a seat in front
of them they can kick all flight
long, while Mom and Dad watch
the movie. Please. Tell them to
stop.
And if you’ve got a crying
baby-and we all love babies-at
least pretend you’re trying to
keep him quiet. Don’t hide behind
a US Weekly.
Also, once your kids stop
crying, the plane should not hear
from them again until they are
old enough to be-and actually arethe pilots. I recently had a little
boy behind me who all flight long
kept singing, at the top of his
lungs, “Go-Go-Go...the cat in the
hat!” I don’t know this song, but
I do know his mom did nothing
except occasionally whisper,
“Jacob, keep it down,” which
had the same effect as pressing
the Volume-Up button.
Speaking of volume. If you
need to use your cell phone on
the tarmac, please remember
there are people inches away from
you. They don’t really want to
hear about Uncle Seymour’s
kidney problem.

BLADEN COUNTY
Family Store Makes Its Mark
In the age of Walmart and

holding its own in
Elizabethtown,
North
Carolina.
By Michael Futch, Staff writer
The Fayetteville Observer
ELIZABETHTOWNLeinwand’s clothing store, a
downtown landmark in the
Bladen County seat, dates back
to a time when Jewish merchants
started to settle in small towns
of North Carolina.
In Fayetteville, Fleishman’s
prospered on the Market House
square. Whiteville had Kramers
and Leder Brothers was a
longtime shopping destination in
Clinton.
Those retail stores are now
memories. But Leinwand’s,
celebrating 75 years in business,
remains a mainstay on

“This community has been
very good to us, and we’re very
thankful,” said Ricky Leinwand,

family to own and operate the
store.

Austrian-born grandfather,
Isaac Leinwand, founded in
the 1930s after immigrating to
America nearly three decades
before. A former peddler in
Charleston, SC, Isaac
Leinwand opened a business
in Branchville, SC. But in
1934, that town’s banks went
bankrupt as the Great
Depression swept the nation.
“My great-uncles set my

in
Elizabethtown,”
Ricky
Leinwand said. “He came
here in 1935. He spoke
English, but he had a thick

Jewish person in town, but he
was accepted.”
After four expansions,

its original location.

Rick’s 86-year-old mother still

her son said.
The family-run store has been
able to compete with supersized
Walmart and Target stores.
“I have had the honor and
pleasure of knowing
Ricky Leinwand for over
15 years, and must say he
is one of the finest southern gentlemen in the business. He has a dynamic personality and I don’t know anyone
that works harder at his craft than he does.
I’ve seen him in action in his store and he
does it all. He is driven to give his customers
the best service possible and help his fellow
man. He is a very kind man who genuinely
cares about people. He has a strong work
ethics and comes from fine stock and a great
family. He makes his alma mater, UNC
Tarheels, proud and is a great Tar Heel fan.
Ricky is a wonderful family man and I know
they are very proud of him. His Father,
Wallace, I know is especially proud of the
way Ricky has taken over the reigns of the
business, continuing the family tradition and
legacy. Thank you Ricky for being a friend

I have had the

until his reitrment. A great family-run
mens and ladies clothing store that is
very involved in the Elizabethtown
community. Ricky has involved himself
in the workings of the city, and, of
course, is an avid Tarheel fan. Going into
the store you will see many photos of
ACC coaches, players and personalities,
who have met, known, and become
friends with Ricky, and that is how he
does his business. There are no
strangers at Leinwands and as far as
the business is concerned, Ricky has
the ability to be ahead of fashion trends,
knows when to hold them and when to
fold them and as far as I am concerned
Ricky and Leinwands are one of the best
operations in eastern NC. Thank you
Ricky for your involvment and we
sincerely appreciate your continued
support and attendance at our shows.
Good Luck and Good Selling!!!!”

OK! OK! -They were not at the show. This was a picture from
many years ago. One of these guys was really there. Does anyone recognize these two men? The lady is not Joanne Cole.

-BREAKING NEWS River Road Jean Company is proud to announce that we have successfully
trademarked Grand River Clothing. A trademark process has begun in
Canada as well. New labels, websites and marketing for shows and signage
will soon be coming your way under Grand River. We are having specialized stickers made to apply over existing back pocket flashers for your
convenience. Our tags and logo remain the same to make an easy transition for our customers and yours.
We would like to thank you for your initial order for our khaki program. Although continued negotiations to deliver you the product we showed
has not progressed, we continue to develop and negotiate for future production. We regret if this has caused you any inconvenience.
Move Forward....you deserve more....is our new motto. Our in-stock
and specialty jean program is solid and growing. The success of the dirty
wash fashion jeans means that we will be offering them again at shows. In
meetings in New York and with our European team, we are also offering the
next big fashions in jeans. White jeans will be offered with trim package, a
lighter weight, deep indigo jean and a light blue washed carpenter jean will
be offered at shows. We look forward to you moving forward with us and
getting more service, fit and classic style.
Our best to you! Kim and Steve Koppman - Grand River Clothing (formally River Road Jean Co) -(ofc)601/279-6571 (cell)601-218-7412
